My iMac G5 keeps restarting on it's own.
Hi all, I did a search and found some similar posts, but all were what seemed a little bit different issues. So, I hope this isn't a bother to anyone if it has been addressed before.
I have a PowerPC, iMac G5, 20" display, and it will from time to time simply restart. Sometimes it will do this a number of times repeatedly. I was just now working on my Powerbook when I hear my iMac in the office upstairs restart.
I can't figure this out. Does anyone have an answer, or at least be able to point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Just an up date. I called Apple and they set an appointment for me at my local Apple store. Took it in that night (Monday) and got it back Saturday afternoon.
It was in fact the power supply that was the problem. Three months out of warranty so it was on my dime. Cost me $192.62. Ouch! That hurt.
Especially since the repair tech admitted it is the exact same piece of hardware that is envolved in the Extended Repair Program. Only thing is, Apple's not admitting it's a problem on my iMac. The only difference is mine has the ambient light sensor.
I really am disappointed in Apple. For one thing........... I don't think I should be dealing with any type of hardware failure at 15 months old. I also don't believe I should need to buy extended protection plans for anything. Especially for the healthy price Apple wants for their products. You'd think you could count on a little quality for the bucks.
Anyway, just thought I'd let everyone that replied what the out come was. My iMac's back on the desk and working fine............ wonder how long before I have more problems. Now that I can't buy anymore protection.

Installed new HDD - WD Scorpio Blue 500G
I ordered the recovery disk DVD from Computer Surgeons.
I installed the recovery in drive bay and restarted as per instructions. Everything went fine and when it started windows for the first time that went ok as well, it kept restarting like it said it would to install all software. Now, with everything installed it is still restarting on it's own. I let it go on overnight as I thought this might be normal, but when I got up 5 hours later it was still restarting.
I don't what else to do, please help.
AndrewHi, Andrew:
Sometimes it takes a while. You may want to abort the installation and try again.
You may also want to use this workaround if you can't get the recovery disks to work.
If you can read your 25 character MS product key, you can make your own Windows Vista installation disk. Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them (just short of going ahead with the actual install) and they appeared to work perfectly.
Apparently when you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-vi...
After you successfully install vista, you can download the drivers you need from your PC's support and driver page.

L355-S7812 Keeps Restarting on it's own
I'll try make this as concise as I can.
My laptop restarts on it's own. Often times right after I wake it up from sleep and other times completely randomly. I had replaced the hdd recently so I thought it might of been a bad hdd but then I switched back to the old hdd and it still does it. Then I thought it could be a bad bios battery cause I was losing time for a while about a year ago. While changing out the soldered bios battery I broke one of the solder spots off so I'm dealing with that right now, but it still runs. I just have to change the date and time often. I ran Memtest86 for a couple hours with no errors aswell and there are no exclamation marked devices in device manager.
Any help would be much appreciated.I would suggest fixing the issue with the BIOS battery, to rule that out as a suspect. I have 4 L355 motherboards sitting here, so I just took a look at one. If the lead is broken, you should be able to recreate it with a piece of wire easy enough. While you have the system open, clean the thermal paste off of the CPU, and apply fresh high quality thermal paste, like arctic silver.
Hopefully one of those items will resolve your issue.

IMac suddenly keeps restarting with no warning!?
So last week my 27" iMac suddenly starts rebooting with no warning. Very frustrating. Have zapped PRAM and reset SMU... still happening. Can't track it to anything repeatable when it happens... any program, any time. Happens randomly... some days 3-4 times, some days 1. Have 4 GB of DDR2 SDRAM installed, but running full CS suite daily... perhaps bad RAM. Can it go bad? It's been fine for well over a year since new and it's been my experience that if RAM is bad, it's bad right away.
Should mention that I'm a daily Mac user for 20+ yrs (designer) and feel fairly comfortable diagnosing and solving any issues, but this one has me stumped.I'm not sure about the original poster's "graphite" iMac, but if your "2nd gen" iMac refers to a "tray-loader" (CD goes in on a tray not a slot), you probably have the same problem I had... Later slot-loader iMacs many have similar problems, but I don't have first hand experience with them.
The most likely cause of the problem is a bad analog video board, specifically the part on it called the "flyback transformer." Do and Google search on "analog video flyback imac" and you should see some useful results.
When my iMac's board went bad, it stated to shut off for no reason. Eventually, it would not even start up. Actually, one other symptom is a "sparking" noise and momentary "jerking" of the screen image. For me, this started happening a few months before the shut off problem started. Unfortunately, replacing the part is somewhat difficult (requires almost full disassembly), and since you would likely be replacing the bad part with a used part from eBay, the replacement is likely to fail too. This is a very common "first failure" for these old iMacs. I think the iMac is designed to shut off or not turn on as a safety feature when the video board is bad. However, if you disconnect the internal video cable (you may have seen it when you upgraded memory), it may start up.
I turned my broken iMac into a "headless" machine by pulling out and reassembling the essential "non-CRT-related" parts on a shelf, connected to and above a very nice 19-inch CRT display (1280x960 at millions of colors). I'm using it now, and it works very well (Mac OS X 10.3.9). -

My 27' 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 12GB RAM iMac keeps restarting.
My I wonder if anyone on here could help me.
My 27' 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 12GB RAM iMac keeps restarting all the time. It's been happening for months now but has got worse and worse. It started when I was using programmes like adobe Pr & Ae but now it happens when I have only have safari or other small apps open.
What happens is the screen freezes, I can hear a clicking should and then the machine just restarts all of a sudden.
I get the message: 'Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Click report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple' which I have done ever time for about 50+ times now in total. The 'problem details and system configuration' states the below:

I use my iMac daily for work and it happens from 4-10 times a day depending on what applications i'm using. More if I'm trying to render a video. It is really furstrating and keeps me from doing any work at all, I can't keep working like this but I have no choise. I really can't be without my computer for very long as I use it to do everything and I do not have another. Also I have all my files on the hard drive. I have bought a Seagate external HD to back up my files onto so I can make a genus bar appointment but everytime I run time machine or try to copy any of my files over to the external HD the machine restarts and disrupts the file transfer. So I can't even back up my files which are really important to me. I even had to retype this whole message becuase my imac restarted while I was fulling in this question.
What is worse is that I bought the extra warrenty (Apple Care) which is due to expire sometime in March 2014 I'm unsure of the date. Might have expired already I don't know. So I need to get this fixed ASAP.
Extra information on the machine:
iMac
27-inch, Mid 2011
Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
Software OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
Can anyone see from the information I have given about what could be wrong with my machine?
Any help or assistance would be much appriciated.
Thanks,
JamesHi. I am currently having the same issue on my 2011 27" 3.1 GHz i5 with 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
For the last couple of months I have been experiencing random restarts, power offs and so on. I have already had this escalated and had my machine taken into Apple to run a Hardware test. They redid the newest OSX version in store and ran the AHT for an hour and got no results. The Genius Bar were asked by Apple Canada to run an all night test. According to Apple they ran the test for 4 hours and got nothing. I was then told to take the machine home and run it with just the memory that was original in the machine. I stressed tested the video card with a benchmark tool called Heaven for 2 hours. 90C was the temp and no failure. I did a Terminal "Yes" loop for a couple of hours and no failure on the CPU. I ran the Apple Hardware Test for 11 minutes and this is the result.
I also have a video of what happened after I restarted the test after about a 5 minute cooldown period. 20 minutes into the test the Imac stalled and made 3 long beeps over and over again like an alarm with a long pause between. I took the memory out of the DIMM 0 & 1 slots and replaced them in the 2&3 slots rand the test and got nothing after 2 hours. I put the memory back in the original spot and ran it again and got no results. Apple contacted the "Genius" techs and they informed them that I had fixed the problem and everything should be good now. I was also told to go ahead and transfer back over my Time Machine Backup. Since this all happened I have had the Imac restart 2 times in the last almost 2 weeks and today got this error message

I would also like to add that The Second High Level tech I spoke to told me to use a program to take an image of what my computer was doing when the fresh install of Mavericks was installed and then again after the Time Machine restore. I sent both and have had no response back. The "Engineers of Apple" would be taking a look at those files. This is what I was told anyway's.
So I would like any advise because Apple hasn't been too helpful. I haven't heard anything back at all. Its been a little while. This seems that it could be an issue. I sat in the store speaking to a gentleman with a brand new iMac 27 inch that was having the same exact issues. I was told his was newer so they were not the same. The owner of the new iMac just rolled his eyes and laughed. James McConville seems to be having the same issue and I have read quite a few others before I saw this post from yesterday.
Help Us Please. -
My iMac screen keeps showing pixels of previously opened documents and Safari tabs and hour or two after closing them.
Even when I swipe to the dashboard the outlines are still there when I know they should not be.
The shadow of those opened documents are still there hours later after shutting down and restarting my computer.
What is happening and what shall I do? Thanks in advance. Not much to go on in your product info, but maybe this will help: iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program. If not, then it's time to visit an Apple repair station.

Why does my iMac display keep shutting off? Computer still running in the background. I've tried unplugging and restarting, to no avail. The computer is well out of warranty - about 7-8 years old, running 10.6.8
Checked.... the settings had not been inadvertently changed, but I did move the scroll and reset them back to the original. Hasn't shut off again.... yet. Will re-post with follow-up one way or the other. Thanks.

What do you mean "update X"? What update are you referring to?

IMac keeps restarting on its own
My IMac keeps restarting on its own. It never really gets to the desktop when it restarts. Everytime it starts over, it gives me a message stating that it restarted because of a problem. I'm afraid It might be infected with some type of virus (if it's at all possible). Iupdated the OS to Mountain Lion a few days ago could that be the reason? I also tried to download some programs but erased them before installing anything. Could it have been me? Did I get my baby sick?
Much to my dismay I don't have Applecare (that will change soon).
GeekSqad at bestbuy was not able to help, despite the $170 buck I dished out so I'd get help for the next 2 years.
Called applecare anyway (cause bestbuy know very little about Macs) and even though I don't have their service, after hours of trying different things, we couldn't fix the issue anyway. Later, on my own, I went ahead and re-installed Mountain Lion from the restore menu (command+R) and the computer seems to be working fine. Hope this helps someone else.
Thanks again Mr. Boyd -
My imac keeps restarting any thoughts?
my imac keeps restarting any thoughts?
Not enough info. Because iMacs have been made without interruption since 1998 in literally hundreds of variants, we need to know more about your Mac before we can even think about helping. People have received bad advice here when they failed to narrow down their iMac model.
At a Minimum, please do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and tell us what that says for your Mac OSX version and your processor type. -
Can anyone help as my Imac keeps restarting. it is only 14 months old.
Try resetting the SMC
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer. -

Thunderbolt Bus: iMac, Apple Inc., 25.1You have added third party RAM to your computer. The first thing I would look at is that, many kernel panics are caused by RAM which can be:
Incorrect RAM (iMacs are extremely sensitive to this)
Failed RAM
Unseated RAM
Please removed the upgraded RAM that was added to the machine and then retest. If the machine works OK, that confirms it's a RAM issue.
On these forums the experienced users tend to all agree that RAM should come from a reputable supplier such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial. -
TS2972 Have to keep restarting iTunes for homeshare
I replaced my two Apple TV 2s with Apple TV3s, and now I have to keep restarting iTunes on my iMac to see my libary.
It was flawless before. I very rarely had to restart iTunes.
I have an iMac (2011, i7), hardwired to an airport extreme, and then the two Apple TVs are hard wired as well.
I'd blame the ATV3s, but I also can't see the library on my iOS devices unless I restart iTunes on the iMac regularly.
Thanks for any assistance.Same issue here :-/
One Apple TV2, one Apple TV3. Both hard wired into AEBS which in turn is hard wired to a Mac Mini running iTunes. The library itself is on a HDD attached to the AEBS via USB. Also two airport express units.
Once/twice a day the remote app on my iPad/iPhone loses sight of iTunes, as do the Apple TVs. Quick restart of iTunes and we're back in business. iTunes on the Mac is fully functional in these periods of downtime so it's not like it cannot talk to the hard drive where the library is or anything. It is EXTREMELY annoying and got worse recently so some update has done something bad. Everything is running latest versions of software/firmware.
I set something up on my iPhone/iPad so I can restart iTunes remotely which helps A LOT but it's still far from ideal and not very 'Apple'.

Even as I try and submit this question, I have to keep restarting the iMac. Wifi is not the problem, and all other applications such as iPhoto, WP, PS, etc work. It's only Safari that cannot hold the connection. I want the downlevel version back so I can work again. But, don't know how to uninstall and install previous version. Help me, I'm drowning in restarts!
If you do not have a backup of your previous system, there is no easy way to revert back to the previous OS X version.
Perhaps we can help with your Mac and Safari issues.
It would help us to help you if we could have some more technical info about your iMac.
If you like, please download, install and run Etrecheck.
Etrecheck was developed as a simple Mac diagnostic reporting tool by a regular Apple Support forum user and technical support contributor named Etresoft. Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a static snapshot of your entire Mac hardware system and installed software.
This is a free app that has been honestly created to provided help in diagnosing issues with Macs running the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
It is not malware and can be safely downloaded and installed onto your Mac.

Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software so we can all help with your Mac performance issues.
Thank You.
