My iMac G5 suddenly shuts down

My iMac G5 -- which I've had for several years -- suddenly shuts down, esp. when I'm online, and esp if watching streaming video (but not only then).
Is some hardware finally going bad?  Should I take it in for service?  Or could it be just an online overload?

Check you iMac with Apple Hardware Test, it should be on your original disk that came with your iMac.

  • IMac suddenly shutting down

Below is what my iMac tells me when it suddenly shuts down or freezes. Does this mean anything to anybody. Quite frustrating. I don't want to buy a new machine if there is some fix for this but I also cannot afford to be without my machine while it is in the shop for a look under the hood.
    Any suggestions would most appreciated.

indicates that yours is an Intel imac and much newer than the ones covered in this forum. Any hardware issue you have may not affect the older machines. The labeling of this forum is prety vauge, so it's not your fault. Suggest you repost in the Intel iMAc forums here:

My imac suddenly shuts down while on line. It has to be unpluged for a couple of hours before it will restart. Could it be the battery dying? Any other sugestions?

Which iMac..? Go to > How to identify iMac models
    1. Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Reset the PRAM and NVRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

You also might want to give the Extended Apple Hardware Test a run, as per > Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test to see if it turns up a hardware problem.

  • IMacs suddenly shuts down

    Hi,
Since a while my iMac suddenly shuts down and reboots.
It starts with a frame freeze, can't move the mouse cursor. After a few seconds my iMac shuts down.
I have no idea what the problem can be.
This is the report of Console when it shuts down.

    Hey MagicMarcus,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your iMac unexpectedly shutting down or restarting. The following resource provides some great information if this happens, along with potential resolution steps if it is a reoccurring issue:

  • My 2011 21.5 iMac keeps randomly shutting down

    Hi, all -
I have a mid 2011 refurbished iMac that I bought last September from the Apple store. I love it, but it has a bad habit of suddenly shutting down on me. It started about three weeks after I got it. If I unplug it and plug it back it it always turns back on, although sometimes I have to do it three or four times before it'll turn back on.
Other times I try to turn it on using the power button and nothing happens. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it will turn on.
I took it in to the Apple store a few weeks ago and they ran all the tests on it and found nothing wrong. They did a reinstall of the OS but it's still shutting off for no apparent reason.
There's no pattern to it. Some days it doesn't do it at all and other times it'll do it two or three times in a row, sometimes not even getting past the bootup screen.
I found out the outlet it was plugged into wasn't properly grounded, could that be a cause? It's now plugged into a plug in another room that is grounded via an extension cord, but it's still turned off on me once in a while.
I've looked around and it seems this is a common problem with some iMacs, and some claim no cause has ever been found. I'm wondering if I should bother taking it back to the Apple store when they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Maybe it's something in the power supply to my house?
    Any ideas out there? Thanks!

You can call Apple Customer Service and they should be able to provide you with Lion for your iMac.
    Hope this helps

  • Sudden shut down (not covered by Extended Repair Program)

I started having problems with sudden shut downs on my 17" iMac G5 1.9GHz lately (actually problem started after upgrading to Mac OS 10.4.8 this week): the computer will go dark like with a power outage - sometimes while I am working on something, other times while it is just idle.
I have researched the discussion board and found that earlier iMacs seem to have a known power problem, but have not found anything on my generation iMac so far (serial # W8547***).
I have tried all suggestions - including resetting SMU & PRAM, checked power lines, downloaded the new Security Update etc - nothing seems to do the trick. I hooked up an external harddrive last night to back up data - five tries each failed, because computer shuts down at some point or the other.
System log lists shutdown causes 2 & -110...

    Hi, J & F.
I am sure you have searched no only the forum, but also the support pages of apple.
If i understand you right, it happend EXACTLY after the update of the OSX. It looks tgo me as if something went wrong in this process. I would try:
    a) to start up in "single user mode" - this checks whether it is something else than the bare operating system; It would give you the indication that your machine is, hardware-wise, still fine. This would eliminate the Powersuplly problem. However, it does not isolate the powersupply as faultive in case that this step doesn't work!
    b) to start up in "Target disk mode" - to see whether you can get anything reasonable done. this helps you to see whether the disk can be used... nothing more.
The real solution probably comes only by reinstalling the original software from your install disk. Be sure that you have a backup of all your files!
I would try and "Archive and Install" , but do , directly after this, a "Repair permissions". If this doesn't help, i would go through an "ERASE and INSTALL". In both cases, don't upgrade the lates OSX versions, stay with the one from your install disk. only, if everything works, go and update OSX.
Hope this helps - please, post back.

  • My MacBook suddenly shut down and won't turn back on - how do I get it to turn back on?

My MacBook suddenly shut down after freezing up and I cannot get it to turn back on again.  I tried the suggestions in the manual and none of them worked to turn it back on. Is there something I am not doing correctly?  The little green light on the charger connector is green but not as bright as normal, it was charged by over 70% before it shut down, so I do not think it is a battery problem.  Is there anything I can do to turn it back on?  Thank you for any help given, I really appreciate it.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.

My iphone4 suddenly shut down.I pluged into a charger it started vibration and got heat up in off mood. I also checked it to genius he said that its battery is ok but problem is some thing else. It is still in off mod. what i have to do?

I  am having a similar odd issue. First of all this summer i took my iphone 4 to apple because my screen had quit. I could hear calls and texts coming thru but screen was unresponsive. I was a month out of warranty so the nice fella at apple gave me a 30 day warranty, then replaced my handset with a refurb. Saturday night at dinner i was on my phine and it died. I plugged it in thinking nothing of it and went to bed. When i wooe up after the charger had been on all night all i had was the black screen with the battery (red) and lightning bolt, meaning it knew it plugged in but still did nothing. So off to apple i go. They said i was out of warranty and the problem (never said what problem) would cost 170 bucks to fix. So i went and upgraded to the iphone 5 ( figured if i'm spending that anyways may as well be on a new phone). When I got home i tinkered with the old one with all the online suggestions i could find. (Cleaning ports, hard reset, putting into recovery mode, and checking indicators for water damage which there was none). Still only saw the battery symbol. I left it alone figuring i can sell off cheap and someone else can repair. Last night for kicks i plugged it in again and it came to life! It is in recovery mode (needs to be hooked to itunes to regain functionality) but showed 100% battery charge. I went to show my bf and realized an issue. If its not plugged into the wall adaptor, it wont turn on. I figured then that if i can get it plugged in and pull it up on itunes maybe it would be fine. When plugged into the computer it wont hold enough power. It thrns on shows the apple for 30 seconds, shuts off. My ending conclusion on my own is that it needs a new battery in order to be revived. Anyone think this sounds like a reasonable conclusion? Or will i be wasting money? If i can get it restored to functional, cheaply i can give to my bf (his pos lg phone is almost toast) or sell it.

  • My iMac OSX keep shutting down

My iMac OSX keep shutting down randomly. It goes to a black screen to a blue screen and then shuts off. I have to unplug and replug it in to get it going again. It's happening everyday... has anyone had this problem and if so what did you do to fix it?

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Re: Restoring windows after sudden shut down during updating

    Hi everyone,
Last night I was updating my windows on my Toshiba laptop, however, my laptop had a sudden shut down during the updating process.
Now when I start my laptop, I am prompted that a system error occurred and I have to insert my windows CD to continue. I never got a windows CD, and nor have I made a recovery disc yet, so is there any possible way for me to log into windows again? I am using windows Vista.
    Any suggestion would be grateful.
    Thanks in advance

    hi dDk,
what is the first rules of using a computer?
*never touch a running system* and of course: *read the f... manual* and *make backups often*
ok this was a bit hard... but this is a common failure to make an update without saving....
now lets see what we can do....
    - i assume that there is no possibility to start in safe mode...
    - hdd recovery is not possible...
    - you have neither a systemdisk of vista nor a system backup
now you are in operators hell....
    - see a servicepartner and ask for assistance, for a small fee he is able to setup your original system
    - get a vista/win7 istallation cd and install it, be aware you loose your hdd backup funktion!
    - try to repair with a "system-on-a-disc" like winpe or bartpe
    - try to make the hidden recovery partition visible to a os booted from cd and run recovery agent from there
if you killed your recovery partition.... bad luck

  • My iMac has been shutting down abruptly

My new iMac has been shutting down abruptly the past week and after that I have to wait several minutes to try and see if it will turn on. At first I thought it was overheating, but even after being on less than an hour it shuts down. Does anyone know the reason why this is happenig? Oh, and I was just browsing on the internet, there were no weird programs runnig and the anti virus scan says it's clean.

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
