My iMac getting old?

Hi, I have sensed that my iMac is suffering a number of fatiques that maybe related to being old. But I had higher hopes for apple product, so it disappoints me.
1. my wireless connection: It is intermittently hanging. After some time of use, it will no longer go through. I either have to turn the WIFI off and back on, or switch to a different hotspot (I happened to have some signal from my neighbor that is visible to me), and switch back. And every time I come back from a long absence that my iMac is in sleep mode, when I activate by moving my mouse or touch my key, my WIFI is typically not connected. I had to do the same as above to make it available. It did not happen like this before.
(at first i thought it was because my wireless vendor has changed from Optimum to FIOS, but my iPad, my PC labtop do not have the same problem, at least not nearly as often. So it has to be from the iMac).
2. My built-in card reader is not working any more. It does not make the connection to recognize the SD card I put in. Now I am using an external USB based card reader. When this problem got started, I could insert the card a couple of times and one of the times it will work. But it completely died.
3. My built-in DVD burner is not working perfectly. When I use it to burn a DVD (i use iMovie or Final Cut Pro/iDVD), the first copy usually works fine. But when I clicked OK to make a second copy, it more often than not will hang.....as if it cannot quite finish the burning. When I somehow got the DVD out, i will see that the DVD is almost done burning, but there is some glitch point that prevents the whole process from finishing. If I play it from a DVD player (or using the included DVD player software), it will play up to a certain point, then it will say there is somethign wrong with it.
My iMac is 27 inch, intel, 8G of memory, 2.66 GHz Core i5. it is of older generation without the Thunderbolt interface. Bought about 3 years ago (I cannot quite remember when...). It is currently at OS X 10.7.4.
Anybody having the same/similar issues? Any suggestions on what I can do? Does Apple provide some kind of "tune up" service without costing a lot of money?

Thanks for the posts. I am aware of the workarounds....and will try a DVD cleaning kit to see if it helps.
Here are my workarounds:
1. WIFI: restart WIFI as I have stated originally....it is annoying. also I use it for work, connecting to my company. So, this has become a huge problem, I have now been forced to switch to using my PC Laptop for work. It may have begun after the OS upgrade. I am not sure. If this is a common problem and it has to do with the OS upgrade or whatever, I hope Apple is seeing this and come out with a fix soon.
2. Card Reader: use an external (which is ok)
3. DVD burner (superdrive): will try the cleaning kit. Any good recommendations?
Also, I have an external blu-ray burner, which works fine for me. So that is my other alternative for now.
While there may be workarounds, this is still disappointing to me. I have higher hopes for Apple products, and iMac is not cheap either. I hope Steve Jobs is looking down on this from heaven and send a dream to the folks who are still living down at Apple campus to do something.

How full is the hard drive?
Do you run any virus software or hard drive "cleaner" software like MacKeeper?
If your model is from 2007 you can install up to 6 GBs of RAM.
2 GBs is the barest of minimum RAM for OS X to run on.
Especially if doing video work. You simply do not have sufficient RAM.
Also OS X 10.5.8 Leopard support ended around 2009.
You could update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, at least.
It is available on disc from the Apple store for U.S. $19.99.
I Would seriously upgrade your iMac's RAM to the max. 6 GBs before doing this.

I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem. Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos? Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

If you install Mavericks, or in your case migrate from an old computer running Snow Leopard (or an earlier version of Mac OS X) to one using Mavericks, some of your software that was designed to run on older computers may not function in the new OS. See this article -

IMac getting slow, likely too full

I have an iMac Early 2008, 24" with 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 800 MHz SDRAM. The hard disk has a capacity of 320 GB. I have 50 GB of remaining space. Almost all of this space is music and family pictures and videos, like my son's first soccer game or first school play.
I am running OS X Yosemite, Version 10.10.1
My computer is getting very slow, and I've upgraded the RAM to the maximum that I can (two 2 GB slots). iPhoto has become so slow that I think my computer has hung up and after 10 minutes I have to Force Quit the program and try again. I regularly empty my Mail, iPhoto, and computer trash bins. My computer has two profiles, one for me (the administrator) and one for my wife. She uses iPhoto as well and dumps all of her iPhone photos on it as well.
It's a great computer and I'd like to keep this one going.
Two questions:
1. Is my computer slow because of all the data on my drive? or is it because of the computer is getting old and the processor is no longer adequate for today's processing needs?
2. Is there a good online place to upload all these valuable pictures, videos, music and other data where I can access it like an external computer? I have an external WD drive for backups, but I've been told that these devices fail and are not a permanent and secure solution to my needs.
Regardless, because the computer is getting older, I suppose I need to back up all these valuable memories; but I'm hoping that getting all of this data off my computer MIGHT make it faster and at least give me another couple of years out of it.
I love the new iMac, but it's just darned expensive. Granted, my iMac has outlived any PC I have ever had.
To my knowledge (which is quite little), buying iCloud space from Apple does not allow me to remove this data off my computer and put in on cloud for easy access.
Suggestions please.

You have as much used space on that drive as you can tolerate. Buy an external drive of the same capacity or more to use as a backup drive. Clone your startup drive to the external drive.
A. Prep the external backup drive:
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
B. Clone the startup drive:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
     used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
     requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
     drive being backed up.
3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
     capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. Seagate and Toshiba both sell an external USB drive in a small enclosure with the drive already installed. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;

6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

I am getting old and looking forward to use I Pad as a Phone if possible through WIFI! I this possible? The screen is to small for me! If possible, with new I Watch taking calls, other uses through I Pad!

Probably you need to get the record from backend base on the date of insertion. and then store it into the WD context, and simple java to compare the old and new record based on date of insertion and again put back to WD Context then finally you can use WDCustomEvent to get the data.

You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
You can trash Firefox 4.0 then re-install Firefox 3.6, it will use your existing bookmarks, passwords etc

I am writting a trigger which take column name dynamically. And on the basis of that column it should give me old value as well as updated value of a column corresponding to a modified row.

Suppose OOO_EMP_NAME is the column name where user made the change.

Then it is working fine because I have given column name statically. But I want the column name to be selected dynamically and I am able to do it through cursor. Also I am able to fetch all column names in v_Column_name variable one by one dyanamically for the cursor.

I am getting OLD.OOO_EMP_NAME and NEW.OOO_EMP_NAME rather then old and new values of the updated column.
Please help me identifying the problem, where I am doing the mistake? What is the correct way to execute these statements? So that I can get old and new values of the column (updated column).
I have tried it by passing in a procedure also but don't know how to execute this dynamic statement to get the old and new values.

In the given link, column name has been selected statically. But i want that column name should be selected daynamically throgh loop and then check the
condition for any update corresponding to that column value. I don't want to write as many if condition as the no. of column name. I just want one if condition for all column namesDon't be lazy. Write all column names into your trigger. Or use a way to create the trigger "dynamically".
What is the problem that you have with static column names? "I don't want to write many..." is not a problem, but an opinion.

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:

Getting old 'Sent" messages from server onto my Mac

I am using Mail 2.1.3 on a Mac Mini with OSX 10.4.11.
I have used web mail (earthlink) exclusively for a number of years and now want to switch to a new email provider. I would also like to start using Apple Mail. I need to preserve my old send messages as well as my old inbox messages.
In doing some testing, I can get old inbox messages to come down from the server into Mail on the Mac. However I have no idea how to get the old 'Sent" messages down. Can't find anything about it in Help or elsewhere.
I'm logging into server mail via POP.
Can anyone help put me on the right path? Thanks.

Never mind, I figured it out for myself.
I contacted earthlink and they were useless, as usual. They do not support IMAP and they insisted it was "impossible" to export messages from the sent box or archive them in any way. When I pushed back on that, they told me one way would be to go into each message and forward it to myself (thus having it appear in my inbox.) With thousands of messages, that was not going to happen.
So I poked around and realized that right on the menu is an option to move messages from one box to another. I mass selected all the messages in my sent box and moved them to my inbox, and they all came down to my Mac. Easy as could be.
The messages are now co-mingled all in the inbox, (but still in order by date) but that's okay, because I just need to archive them.
FYI for anyone else having this problem, I am switching to gmail, and I also found out that gmail has an option for pulling all your old messages into their mail service, with many common email providers supported. Whether this pulls in the sent messages or just the inbox, I don't know. But gmail supports IMAP, so if you can get them over there, you should then be able to get them down to your Mac/PC. So that could be another option.
