My imac goes to sleep even when in use

i ran the hardware test and got this message:logic board-error code 2 STH/1/2 CPU T-Diode
what should i do/

This is not only a logic board problem.
I had the same exact problems as you and have even got the same exact message. I ended up having to get the whole motherboard replaced because of one very simple but troubling problem.
The motherboard is designed as such where Apple put the the temperature sensor running from the hard drive right next to the CPU processor. Over time, the high heat of the CPU processor causes the plastic/rubber surrounding the wire to become brittle and even melt. When this happens, the system gets a bad reading from the hard drive and thusly causes a louder, faster fan noise; and eventually, the computer starts to fall asleep even while in use.
Simply put, you will probably need to have your mother board replaced. Contact Apple with your error code, and explain the problem carefully to them because it is not in the usual problems they have faced. I had my motherboard replaced at the end of April and it seems to be running fine for now.

  • After Mountain Lion, iMac goes to sleep even while Quicktime is converting files

    Hello!
After Mountian Lion, I have had to change my Energy setting to NEVER put the computer to sleep. iMac has been going to sleep even while it is converting files. This never happened with the previous OSX.
Does anyone know why it goes to sleep even when tasks are being performed? It's very annoying.
    Thanks!

Same problem here on a Mid 2007 Core 2 Duo -- set to "never" but keeps dozing off.
Extra lousy since it's also the print and media server.

  • Screen goes to sleep even when viewing movies in full screen mode

Hi, I have adjusted my settings so my screen goes to sleep after 5 minutes which is ok. But it also does this when viewing movies in full screen mode.... Is this a setting somewhere? Thanx!

    Welcome to the Discussions!
"When the computer is inactive" or "idle" means when YOU, the user, are doing nothing, neither using the keyboard nor the mouse. So you have to increase that 5 mins in Energy Saver.

  • Mac goes to sleep even when streaming to Apple TV?!

    Hello everyone,
I just recently bought the Apple TV (3rd gen) to compliment my rMBP and am loving it.
I keep iTunes open with my Mac on, especially when I know I'm going to be streaming. However, my Mac seems to doze off half way through streaming a TV show, or a movie (usually something with a long play time). Macs have always just connected and "worked" for me so it seems strange that the ATV wouldn't just wake my Mac when I select Home Sharing.
If the show stops playing, sometimes if I go back and select Home Sharing again it will wake my Mac.. but often I get this message:
"Turn On Home Sharing in iTunes
To access your iTunes library on Apple TV, turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer using <email>."
My Mac's energy savings are set to sleep after 1  hour, it's always plugged in. iTunes is always open. Do I have to set energy savings to 'always on' if I want it to serve the ATV whenever In want? I thought the ATV would be clever enough to wake the Mac when it wants something, which would save a lot of energy - and as I said it does work on occasion. As I have a connected USB hard drive I'm trying to do it this way instead of having an always-on NAS.
I should probably add that I'm using an AirPort Extreme with the correct firmware required to have the whole wake-over-wifi stuff.
    Advice please :o)

seems to be a bug. What I have done is set my computer to necer sleep and the display to sleep after 3 mins
This way the Apple TV works but I do not have a bright Computer system shining at me while I am watching TV

  • My early 2011 MBP goes to sleep even when Sleep is turned off and the power is plugged in.

Basically, it just decides to go to sleep after a few minutes of it being idle.  Searched around but I couldn't find a similar problem.  I've already tried resetting the SMC, but that hasn't fixed it.
    Any ideas?
It's a early 2011 MBP unibody, running Mavericks.

  • Imac going to sleep intermittently while in use

Found this issue on many forums, but unfortunately I cannot find a solution.  Taking to an apple store for repair is not an option.  If I'm going to spend $300-$400 for repair, I might as well purchase a new PC.  I am not that attached to this mac, and now with operating issues, I'm even less so.  At least with a PC I can ctrl+alt-del and start all over.  I was expecting more than 4 years out of a $1200 imac, so if I have to replace repair every few years, I'm thinking I'd rather start with a clean slate for $400 every few years with a new PC.  Very frustrated not being able to find a solution online about this problem, seeing that it seems so common.
While working on imac and surfing the net, my screen will intermittently go to sleep.  I can wiggle the mouse and click it and it will come back on right where I left off, internet connection and all. Once it happens, it continues to happen until I shut down and walk away for a good length of time (overnight).  Problem seems to happen when the imac has been running for many hours at a time.  I have set up the activity monitor, but I don't know what the numbers mean or what to look for.
This initially started happening this past summer, and I thought it was a heat issue, but now that it's happening mid-winter, not so sure.  Also, in the summer this seemed to be prompted by streaming online, but now it is just from surfing.  Not sure if it would shut down if I was working in Pages or Numbers, as I do so infrequently.  Doesn't matter if it's Safari or Firefox and it's not a hot corners/sleep issue.  Also noticed my fan runs loud sometimes, but not always.  Not sure if it's a related problem.  Does not sleep because of fan, no consistency in shutting down, etc.
Someone who has had this same problem and resolved it, please respond.  I've seen many postings from people with the same problem, but responses are from people with the same problem.  Looking for a solution, please.
    Thanks.
    Sherry

It does sound like a heat-related issue. The fact that it takes a while from a cold start to begin happening, and that it contines until the machine is shut down for a while, and that it is exacerbated by streaming video (which tends to increase the amount of internal heat generation), and the increased fan speed, all point to a heat-related problem.
The place to start is to ensure the iMac's air vents are clean: http://www.ehow.com/how_12027325_clean-vents-imac.html
However, with a computer that old it's possible that enough dust has filtered through the vents and gotten built up on the internal components that it will need to be cleaned out to fix the problem. Assuming you don't want to do that yourself, you might check with the local Apple store to see if they will clean it for you at a reasonable price.

  • Windows 7 RC goes to sleep automatically while in use

    Hello everyone!
When running Windows 7 RC on my laptop it sometimes goes to sleep even when I am using it. For example, while playing a game the screen just goes black and Windows sleeps. That is very frustrating because I have to wake it up and see that the game I was playing is closed. This problem occurred many times and during several different games. Although not every game is affected by this. I am not sure it happens too when I run applications.
I pretty much turned sleep off in all the settings in the Windows Control Panel. It is only suppose to sleep when the battery has only 1% left but my battery is always charged when running Windows.
Maybe I should also mention that my battery is in a very poor condition. I use this battery since about little more than a year and it has run through 385 cycles with only 27% of health left.
I hope someone can help me with this because if I cannot even play games on Windows then there is no reason to keep my Boot Camp partition.
    Thank you!

I have the same problem you both have, and I have not confirmed this with Apple, but I'm almost positive it's an over heating issue. When your MacBook Pro goes to sleep while you were gaming, hurry up and touch the left fan vent next to the built in keyboard. Are we cooking eggs here or what? I'm presuming as a failsafe, once the CPU/GPU hits a certain temperature, an auto sleep function is triggered to prevent the system from cooking itself. As a work around I bought a laptop fan, which keeps it a lot cooler and has dimmed down the automatic sleeping issue. I think the main issue is that Apple's Bootcamp drivers aren't supporting fan control, therefore the fans are staying at their normal speed, when they really should be maxing out their speed when you're gaming.
    Hope this helps.

  • Imac goes to sleep when downloading and errors occur

I have a Imac and whenever i download largish programs from  the appstore which take a little while to download, the Imac goes into sleep mode and when i restart the imac, the download has stopped and says an error has occurred. I then have to restart it and resign in with my apple id and it start again.
This isn't a massive issue on programmes which take up to 30  inutes but larger programs which take a few hours to download (I am in a area with relatively low broadband speed) I cant leave it to download and go and do somehting else or leave it over night.
Does anyone know how to turn off the auto-sleep mode and leave it on conctantly until turned off ?
    Thanks

  • IMac sleeps even when disk activity is occurring - Mavericks

    Hi,
I have had this problem for awhile, but was hoping a software update would have fixed the problem (but hasn't).
I have an 2011 iMac running Mavericks and I have noticed that the sleep function does not behave as expected.
I often have my iMac copy files between two external drives or perform backups overnight, but have found that my iMac will go to sleep in the middle of the process.  I have my Energy Saver settings set so that my iMac goes to sleep after 15 minutes and will try to put the hard drives to sleep where possible, however my iMac should not go to sleep if disk activity is happening.
I find that when I wake up in the morning, my file transfers have been paused and only recommence once the IMac is woken.  This is the same with my CarbonCopyClone, the backup is paused but restarts when the iMac wakes.
It used to be that these functions could happen overnight and my iMac would only sleep once they were completed.
My workaround has been to keep my iMac awake using the Caffeine Application, but this is not ideal as Caffeine does not know when the process has finished.
    Any help would be appreciated,

Good thread on this issues at MacRumours (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1415661). Suggested solution is to install Caffeine from the App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/caffe...11246225?mt=12).

  • IMac goes to sleep/hibernate multiple times per day after installing Maverick OS. I have to shutdown and power back on.

iMac goes to sleep/hibernate multiple times per day after installing Maverick OS. Moving the mouse or hitting the spcaebar will not wake the pc.
I have to shutdown and power back on. My iMac was purchased in January 2011 and no longer in warrenty.  The energy saver 'sleep' and 'display' settings are set at 10 minutes. When I changed to 'never' the machine got very hot and I changed the settings back.  I have checks by: Put hard disk to sleep when possible and wake for network access.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • 3 Z's then Imac goes to sleep

I have recently had a problem that is extremely annoying. I happens even if I am using the mac at the time. What happens is that all of a sudden there are 3 Z's that appear in the centre of the screen then my Imac goes to sleep. This has been happening for about 4 days.
Does anyone have any idea about what is going on?

It may be an Apple Remote putting the iMac to sleep. Someone may be playing a trick on you. See this thread about someone else with the same issue:

I have a year-old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi from  Airport Express.  No problem with the Macbook or my iPad.  It seems a lot Mac users are having the same problem.  Is there a solution?  Does Apple have a solution?

    Sometimes there are problems.
Somethings to try but probably won't help....
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
    2. Startup in Safe mode by holding down the "Shift" key....
    3. Reset the P Ram by holding down the "Command/Option/P/R" keys at the same time...
The above are standard items to do on any Mac from time to time.
I repair permissions at least once a month....
The other 2 periodically as they do straighten things out when they get out of whack....
    Thanks for the feedback.

Log in screen appear after Mac goes to sleep even if screen lock is turned off. This happens usually but not always. Using Yosemite, 2 year old iMac. This has only started to occur recently and it happened in Mavericks also.

    Howdy stkh,
You may want to check the General pane of the Security & Privacy System preferences to make sure that the Require password...after sleep or screen saver begins is not checked. See this article for reference -
