You are posting this in a server/enterprise message board. You might have better lucking posting it somewhere else.
You can try hooking up an external display to your iMac to see if it's a problem with the iMac screen or the logic board. If you get an external display picture, then you probably have a display problem in your iMac (bad lcd, bad back light, bad power to display, etc).
Also, try unplugging your computer from the electricity, holding down the power button for 15 seconds, and then plugging it in again. This resets the power management system, just in case something got buggy.

Looks like the same thing just happened to my wife's 20"G5 iMac. After the most recent update she said the system crashed then on startup after about a minute of the spinning wheel the screen went black ... nothing happened. So after leaving it for 20minutes I shut it down by holding down the startup button on the back ... same thing, and again a further two times. So the issue wasn't a one off.
Then as I started to surf discussions to come up with a solution it came right by itself ... I don't know what it was. Maybe it just needed more than 20 minutes to set itself up. Or maybe it just needed a few prods to get it started.
Just thought I had better try a restart again to see if the problem was actually solved ... same thing happened. Now after about ten minutes after startup it comes back on ... weird. No time for doing a whole lot more than that at the moment.

Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

My Macbook Pro has a black screen when running in Bootcamp Windows 7. Since I updated the mac side my windows side now starts up with completely black screen - no prompt, nothing, Cap keys still light up as does mouse and DVD drive seems to run.

Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick. I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally. I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again. I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time. Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black. I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]

I would first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
Let us know if these procedures don't solve the problems.

IMac Flat Panel Gray Screen when I Turn On

My iMac won't load. When I turn it on there is the "chime" then nothing but a gray screen. I tried reseting the PMU, but still nothing. The machine froze while doing a backup and my hubby forced the machine off. When I tried to turn on the next day, this is what I got. Have tried starting it with everything unplugged... I am in the USVI and there are no Apple people here so I really need some HELP!

I go to turn on my laptop 2 days ago.. and my computer pretty much took a crap.. I would like to fix it myself without having to go and pay for repairs.. On top of that I had ordered a new laptop for college that is already on it's way so I would really not like to pay for repairs.. I have several Recovery disks that BestBuy gave me when I had purchased my laptop from them. I try to put a disk in.. and nothing happens the screen is still black. Please try a hard reset and see if it works.
1. Power off your laptop
2. Remove the a/c adapter, battery and everything that is attached to your laptop.
3. Hold the 'POWER 'button down on your laptop for about 10 seconds.
4. Plug in the a/c power supply (without battery) and power on.

Are you able to access the BIOS?
If not then there could be a motherboard problem
Did you try to connect the Satellite notebook to the external monitor to check if something would be visible on second screen?
I think this would be helpful to get more information about possible hardware issue
If an second display would stay black too, then an graphic card issue might be possible
However, I doubt you could fix it yourself. In most cases its a job for an technician

My imac has a gray screen when waking it up from sleep mode. about 9 months ago, I installed OS X Maverick.

This is the second time this has happened, since installing OS X (9 mos. ago). (I can't recall the fix from the last incident.) Upon waking the pc up from sleep mode, I get a gray screen. Nothing works except using the Command and P & R keys to get to "reinstalling OS X", to no avail. What do I need to do to get it back to normal?
My imac is a 21.5", mid 2011 item.

Those keys do not reinstall OS X. To do that:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
