My iMac has booting weirdness

OK to explain the situation and what I have done so far.
My iMac has been working fine for ages then out of the blue 4 days ago instead of booting up it went to a grey screen with a tiny folder icon in the center of page with the finder logo on it. This flashed and changed to a folder icon with a question mark in it and then back again to the finder icon and so on.
So I rebooted my machine and the same thing happened again.
Then the third time after an age the fan would kick into overdrive and I would reboot it it once again without getting into the mac osx.
This time it loaded straight in.
Each day since then it has been the same process to get into the machine to load up. Once loaded up it works fine although I notice each time the trash can is showing as having stuff in it on the dock although it was emptied last before I shut down.
i then went into the disk utility thing and ran a verify disk permissions and it came up with loads of errors. But it says you have to repair your start up disk using the install dvd and boot onto that. So I did just that and it would not let me. It highlighted my hard drive in red and said SMART failing - yet in disk utility when in osx is does not say that.
What should I do?
I have a spare hard drive that I can use to replace this one if it does sound like it is the drive that is knackered - although I would love to know what would have caused it?
But I will need advice on how to back up my programs and especially all my emails and folders from imail and favourites from firefox.
I have over 60gig left free space on my hard drive so it isn't that my drive is full.

Ok, the first thing you need to do is clone/backup your hard drive. You need a firewire drive for it to be bootable, then I recommend getting SuperDuper! to make the clone. What it does is make an exact copy of your drive, with all your folder, desktop, mail etc etc, so that when you boot from the external clone, it's as if you were working from your original machine.
The reason your get the file with the question mark at startup is that your computer can't find a start-up drive. Having your drive diagnosed as failing by your install disc is bad news, as you know, you can't repair a drive when you're booted from it, so the install disc is a more valid indicator of incipient failure.
There is no particular cause for a failed drive, it could be bad sectors, physical deterioration, or any number of other reasons.
If you are under warranty, or have Apple Care, I would suggest calling them, if not, get a new firewire drive, and put the spare drive into your machine.

I would first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
Let us know if these two procedures don't solve the problems.

-refurbished iMac has a 20GB partition for Boot Vamp with FAT format. I want to remove this and replace it with a much bigger format with NTFS formats?

My (new to me) Apple refurbished iMac has a 1TB hard drive. Running OS 10.6.7 Snow Leopard. When I tried to install a Boot Camp partition, prior to installling Windows 7- 64 bit, I discovered that the machine had a 20 GB Boot Camp partition, too small for what I need. HOw do I remove the 20 GB partition, and replace it with a 500 GB partition?

I have a number of PC and Mac Pro running Windows Pro, and the OS only needs 80GB partition, plus whatever data etc.
New but used does not sound like Apple Store (refurbished) Specials which would be a 'virgin' OS.
I would reformat and do your own clean install.
There may be something wrong and why it was left that way for one thing. May be a problem with the partition table.
Boot from OS X DVD and you can usually try Disk Utility to "-" remove and then repair and get back, and you of course normally should be able to just use Boot Camp Assistant which is one of its functions - not just to create partition.
For normal resizing, or creating the free space you need has to be in one contiguous chunk and not be fragmented, which is hard to imagine that 500GB is going to be intact.
And whatever you do, rule #1 in the pdf guide: backup before beginning.

Help? iMac has no access to files. Only grey Screen. Boots up to Browser.

I need help! My iMac either has been attacked by Virus or Worm. I can boot up to a Firefox Browser but that is all. The iMac has no files accessable and the Desktop is just a grey screen. I tried inserting the Mountain Lion Disk but could not access it, and it can not be ejected. No external Disk is accessable.
I don't know what to do?

If you're running Mountain Lion (there isn't normally a separate install/restore disk unless you specifically made one from the downloaded installer file, so not sure what disk you put in the drive) try booting into the Recovery HD, select Disk Utility, click on Macintosh HD and select 'repair disk'. If any changes are made click on repair disk again until you get a clear pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.

To eject the disk try restarting holding down the mouse button until the disk is ejected. Other possibilities for ejecting a stuck disk here (although you obviously need a working machine to be able to try them):

I have an imac from late 2008 with snow leopard. Late saturday evening 24 Mar I had powered
down my imac then later turned it on. Now only a grey screen appears, nothing more. If I leave
the imac on a folder with a question mark appears and blinks.
I have tried the following to fix the problem and ALL HAVE FAILED:
they are:
1. resetting the pram. it doesnt work.
2. booting from the installation cd. The imac doesn't even READ the cd, the screen remains grey and doesn't
read the cd at all.
3. booting in the safe mode. nothing happens, the screen remains grey.
4. booting in apple hardware test mode: nothing happens screen remains grey.
5. boot with option key pressed, so as to choose mac HD or my windows partition. nothing
happens, the screen remains grey.
All of these have failed to fix the problem.
When I power on my imac I heard the chord, a slight spin of the HHD I'm sure that's what it is,
and then nothing.grey screen.
I have tried unpluggling the power cord for 15 seconds, reconnecting it, waitiing five seconds
and then powering up the imac. it doesn't do any good.
any help anyone can provide will be appreciated.
do you think it is a hard drive error or failure?
why doesn't it read or boot from the instllation CD?? and yes I am using the correct disk.

Ok. so you stated the screen remains gray. Is it just plain gray? Does it have a folder with a question mark on it? Do you see the little pin wheel thingy?
You also stated you can't boot from the install disc. Turn the machine on and put the disc in the drive. Shut the machine down by holding down the start button for five seconds or so and wait a further 20 seconds. Restart the machine and hold down the 'C' key before the chime and keep holding it down until the machine boots form the disc. It can take up to three minutes to boot from the disc. Once it has booted from the disc select the language and go to the Utilities menu at the top and run the disc repair utility.
The hardware test is built in and should work regardless. Turn the machine on and hold down the 'D' key before the chime and keep holding it down until the hardware test starts.
I fear you have not given enough time or used the correct procedure to do the tests you state you have done.

IMac has a disk stuck and wont boot

Hi all,
My iMac has an installation disk stuck in the drive. Having been turned off, it now won't open in safe boot mood or some or the other short key problem solvers I have googled, and the disk won't eject. The opening screen doesn't even get to the spinning grey circle, just the main apple logo appears and the cd drive makes a repetitive noise.
I dont know with where the problem lies, the non-booting computer or the non-ejecting disk. Please help.

My iMac has been shutting down abruptly

My new iMac has been shutting down abruptly the past week and after that I have to wait several minutes to try and see if it will turn on. At first I thought it was overheating, but even after being on less than an hour it shuts down. Does anyone know the reason why this is happenig? Oh, and I was just browsing on the internet, there were no weird programs runnig and the anti virus scan says it's clean.

I have Mackeeper installed and according to the scans I have run, everything is fine. No virus, no junk files . . . no problems at all . . .
Except that for all practical purposes, my computer isn't working.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.

From reading this site and others, looks as if there could be thousands of possiblities/remedies.
I agree. Aside from the very remote possibility that running Java for that "trusted" website allowed some kind of infection--and if it was some kind of exploit, I doubt it would manifest itself in any way you'd notice--there are just too many different things going on for me to give any help.
Why were you thinking it was the router/DD-WRT? What if you connect directly by Ethernet?
Some generic thrings to try.
See if a Safe Boot helps. Shift at the startup chime and give it much longer to boot than normal. Don't open anything, leave it a minute or two and then restart normally.

You could try the shotgun approach and reinstall, but first you must be certain to have a completely reliable backup, in case you need to restore.

It sounds like a runaway process is filling up your volume.
Boot in safe mode. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.

It's not technically challenging, but it isn't clearly necessary. In any case here's how:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. PLEASE HELP! How can I tell if my Imac has been hacked? I see a few people have asked this question but the responses tended to be advice on what to do once you've been hacked, not what can done to find out if you have been hacked. I have a late 2012 model imac. My sharing was off and remote logging was off. I use an external router that send wireless to about 4 consoles in the flat. I don't think I have any firewalls up (now looking like a mistake). I think I'm possibly being hacked due to abnormal behaviour and most recently my camera was turned off all day (no LED) then I went to record something on Photo Booth, the application popped up displaying an image of me getting dressed (nightmare!) which happened hours earlier when the camera was off. This image quickly then disappeared and the camera began working normally. Very strange and alarming. Please help me. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
