My imac has os x installation error after erase and reinstall

i've just got imac g5 off a mate. he asked me to to wipe the drive and reinstall OS X 10.3.5 with the disks he gave me. Inserted disk 1 and there was an error reading disk. Tried holding down option key down when turning computer on and it booted from disc. chose erase and install which it did until 100% reached and it said there had been an error on installation. advised to reinstall - then the disk failed completely. got hold of black osx 10.3 panther installation disks and just got no entry sign after gray screen with apple logo. tried c on startup and the apple sign moves slightly to the right and has dodgy looking ligns across it - computer freezes. tried open fireware reset vdram and reset all. nothing. removed new ram from slot. nothing. swapped original ram to other slot. nothing. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

siroberts, Welcome to the discussion area!
Not sure how you ended up in the iBook G3 discussion area since you are asking about an iMac G5??
The original iMac G5 shipped with OS 10.3.5 (7P35) and the last iMac G5 shipped with OS 10.4.2. So neither iMac will boot from a retail version of OS 10.3.
Depending on which iMac G5 you have, you may be able to get it to boot from a retail version of OS 10.4. Otherwise you need to contact Apple (or your mate) and get the original discs for that iMac.

  • White screen after erasing and reinstalling OS X

    HI there,
I have a 5 year old iMac that has been running perfectly up until a month ago.  We had a power cut (not the first time the mac has been suddenly turned off), and after turning it back on I get the Apple logo and a progress bar for about 30 seconds before it turns into a white screen, with no cursor.  I have called Apple 3 times about this issue and we have gone through all the steps you see in the forums here to solve this problem.  Yesterday Apple told me to erase the HD and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X.  I have everything backed up on time machine so I went ahead and did this.  During the installation process I did not choose to transfer data from my external HD via time machine in case the problem i was having was due to something I had on my external HD.  After installation was complete the computer restarted only for the white screen to appear again.  I had to boot into safe mode to fully complete installation.  After this was done, I restarted the computer only to encounter the white screen again.  My question is, are there anymore steps I can take to resolve this problem, or is it time to take it to a Genius Bar?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities
There's a few more things your can try. Press and hold Option + Command + P + R at the startup "Dong" and your computer will reboot again. When that is done Press and hold Command + V at the "Dong" and this will put the computer in verbose mode and allow you to see exactly what the computer is hanging up on while it is booting up.

  • I get more and more "input/output error" I erased and reinstalled

I am getting more and more "input/output error" on a multitude of subjects . I cannot repair the problem even though I have done a complete erase and instal.
I have a core duo intel based unit with 4 GB ram running 10.6.7.

It sounds like your hard drive is failing. If you haven't already done so, back up as much data as you can, then take the unit to an authorized service provider for testing.

  • How to get back pictures and music after erase and reinstall of OS X?

So.. My computer was working perfectly fine until I went to turn it on and it popped up saying that I restore or back up files and such. Well I ended up having to restore the system.. But it said it wouldn't delete pictures or music. I NEED it back! HELP!

Do you have a backup of your photos?

  • How do I reinstall backed up user folder after erase and reinstall of 10.4?

I had to erase and reinstall 10.4 on my g4 ibook. Prior to this I backed up my user folder on an external drive. Is there and easy way to get my machine the same as it was before the OS reinstall - library settings, files etc?

Is it assumed that apple users should have another apple machine and or a spare unused firewire hard-drive for system maintenance?!? Sure, if I were running it for buisness use, I'd have a mirrored drive, break the mirror, and upgrade one half of it, but this is the machine in my bedroom! I've got to say, I've rapidly going back of apple over these update QA issues. The fixes offered by people (and I appreciate the time and effort they put in to help others) so far all seem to involve creating other systems on spare drives, or using target mode from another mac. Come on Apple! You can't seriously expect your home users to have two machines, or a spare drive (personally, any drive I have, I use in something or other! I'd consider it a waste having a drive spare just for system upgrades to my Mac). It's about time Apple posted on this subject. It's unfair to expect your userbase to support your COMERCIAL OS for free so heavily.
I bought a mini because it was cheap, and I wanted to play with OSX. I bought the next OSX release because I had grown to like OSX. Now I'm rapidly going off it. I don't want to have to buy another device just to make it safe to upgrade.
Sorry for the Rant. Simon, this isn't meant as a criticism of your response. I just feel that apple should be more proactive here, having another disk is of course a good way to go, however, it takes the old TCO a bit to high for a home/play machine imho.
Anyone from Apple care to comment? (or will you simply edit out my post... afterall that would be easier than addressing the problem).

  • I have no hardware or external drives after erase and reinstall of  Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6

    How do I fix this?

If you have access to another Mac you could start your computer in Target Disk Mode (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8443.html) and use the other Mac to install OS X on your computer. At the end of the install the other computer should boot off of your Mac, use Software Update to update your Mac to the latest OS. Once complete shut everything down and disconnect the firewire cable between the computers and you should be good to go.

  • Tried to upgrade and after uninstalling and reinstalling several times, keep getting "procedure entry point could not be located in dynamic link library" followed by "iTunes was not installed properly"  Error 7.....Help, please??

Tried to upgrade as instructed and after uninstalling and reinstalling (even back to the former iTunes which I was happy with)several times, keep getting message "Procedure entry point could not be located in dynamic link library"  followed by "iTunes was not installed properly"  "Error 7".    Help, please??

Entry point errors can usually be fixed by deleting the offending dll, then repairing the component it is part of from the programs and features control panel. Unfortunately you neglected to include the detail of which dll is mentioned.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard (via my MacBookPro), either from the HD or DVD drive.  Can't get it to run Hardware Test.  Disk Utility says disk OK - files are there. What can I do?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

CS5.5 and OSX 10.9.4: Most applications will not launch even after uninstalling and reinstalling the Creative Suite 5.5. After my 2011 MacBook Pro 17 died, I had to purchase a new MacBook Pro 15 to replace it.  I performed a Time Machine installation from that 2011 machine, and only Distiller and Acrobat would launch (none of the rest of the creation apps).  So I ran the CS5.5 installer, uninstalled, then reinstalled, producing the same result. When I try to launch, nothing happens.  What next?

  • HT1923 After uninstalling and reinstalling itunes according to the instructions for Vista, I do not have QuickTime in my programs.  Am I supposed to install QuickTime separately?  Isnt it supposed to install with Itunes automatically?

After uninstalling and reinstalling itues according to instructions for Vista, QuickTime doesn't appear in my programs, I don't seem to have it anywhere,  Isn't QuickTime supposed to be part of the Itunes installation?  Is the absence of it why no ipod will function correctly for me?

Let's first try something relatively simple. Download and save a 64-bit version of the iTunes installer (iTunes64Setup.exe) to your hard drive. (Don't run the install on line.)
Now try right-clicking the installer file and selecting "Run as administrator".
Does that get you past the privileges errors?

  • Missing HD Space even after Erase and Install

Ok, so I own a 2.4GHz MBP, 200GB HD 7,200RPM, 4GB of memory... Penryn model that my brother purchased for the each of us back in about August of last year (2008). So recently my brother upgraded to the Unibody and gave me his MBP so that I can give it to my wife. So now, I have 2 of the same exact MBP's.
So the problem that I'm having is that when I did a Erase and Install on the MBP that was given to me, it didn't have the same amount of HD space as the one I originally had. I only know this, because I recently did an Erase and Install on my original MBP and because I wanted a fresh MBP. When I did the Erase and Install on my original MBP, I noticed that it had about 174GB of HD space left.
Now with the MBP that I just received, I did the same exact Erase and Install to my new MBP and it only has 171.71GB of HD space.
Also, I notice after doing the Erase and Install again on the new MBP. I noticed that when I did the Customize portion it stated that I am going to be need 9.2GB of available space and that I have 185GB of available space. So after I did the Erase and Install, shouldn't it have about 174GB of space like my original MBP. And that's why I know my new MBP is missing HD space.
So my question is that, why am I missing HD space on my new MBP after Erase and Install and what can I do to get it right. Why wouldn't have the two computers have the same specs after Erase and Install has been done exactly the same way? (The only reason I did the Erase and Install on the new MBP is so that I can configure it for my wife with her login and info.)
Sorry for the long read... but here are the cliff notes.
    1. I have 2 MBP that are exactly the same.
    2. I did an Erase and Install on both MBP.
    3. After Erase and Install, one of them has about 3GB less HD space.
If anyone can help me, please let me know. I will post replies here as well.
Otherwise, I will be taking it back to Apple since it's still under warranty.
    Thanks

But my problem is right after the same exact Erase and Install on both, they have different free space.
How could you possibly know this without using the drives? IOW, how & when are you checking the drives' capacity & the used & available space of each?
Again, I've noticed that the HD space specifies that it has 185.99GB of available space after the OS, but once you add certain things, it specifies that it will be using 9.2GB of the available 185.99GB.
What do you mean by "185.99GB of available space after the OS"? What are the "certain things" & what is the "it" that specifies 9.2GB will be used?
If you really mean each drive is showing a *total capacity* of 185.99 GB (before or after installing anything), this is right for a "200 GB" drive. That is because the drive capacity specification is given in decimal based gigabytes but the computer reports capacity in binary based ones. (See paragraph 3 in my post at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9389432&#9389432 or search this forum for the word "gibibyte" for more about that.) This number should not change when something is installed -- it is the total capacity of the drive.
If the "certain thing" that says 9.2 GB (or whatever) is the installer application, be advised that it is telling you +the free space needed for the installation+, which is not that same thing as +the space used by the installed files+ once the process is complete. This is because the installer requires temporary file space to assemble the files it will install, hold the results of pre- & post- installation checks, & so on. This temporary space is eventually freed up once the files are in place. In part because of this, the reported space needed is only an estimate, & is always more than the space used by the installed files. (IOW, if it says 9.2 GB are needed for the installation, you should always see less than this used by the sum of all the files installed.)
Thus, as I have already explained as best as I know how, you need to look not just at the free space of each drive but at the total capacity, the number of files & folders used on each volume, & the partition map if you want to make a meaningful comparison of the two drives. I have already explained how to do this using Disk Utility. If you are not willing to do that but instead rely on what appear to be flawed inferences from other things, I can't help you any more than I already have.
