My iMac has slowed down
I have a 20" iMac 5,1 with a 2.16GHz core 2 duo and 1GB of RAM. It runs much slower now than it used to and I'm wondering what I can do to speed it up? Do I need more RAM?
That's kind of what I thought. Upgrading the RAM to the maximum it will take should help quite a bit. You have an older machine so I'm not sure how much it will address. I would recommend going to www.crucial.com and run their Crucial Memory System Scanner to see how much you can install. Crucial makes excellent RAM and also OWC (www.macsales.com) make great RAM.

3 month old iMac has slowed down considerably after installing ML
I bought my iMac 3 months ago and installed Mountain Lion last night. Now everything on my Mac has slowed down considerably. From opening the System Settings to opening a page in Safari.
I have MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint installed and also VMware Fusion. I have software (CorelDraw) that only runs on Windows (the one I have) therefor the virtual harddrive.
Is this what is causing the problem? If so, how can i uninstall ML to get my computer back to it's previous state.
I am very new to Mac so I don't quite know where to go and how to fix it.I was just about to write the same problem, but I don't have VMware; my laptop is late 2008 was running Snow Leopard (uptodate version).
I've scientific softwares so probably would require a clean re-installation of ML. I MUST MENTION HERE that those software which were written for PPC will NOT work on ML. Just found out that one of my important softwares version won't work on ML; need $500 to upgrade that software .
Therefore, I'd also want to know how can I go back to SL.
I'll let you know how clean re-installation has worked. -
What can I do about my iMac slowing down. Shortly after my Apple Care ran out it started to slow considerably. Kind of like having a PC again. On a PC I would defrag it, but Apple tells me it is not recommended for the iMac. Tired of watching the multi-colored circle spin. What can be done? I just upgraded to Lion. The problem seems a bit worse since. AND I can no longer get my iMac to back up with Time Machine. What gives?
Try using disk utility on your hard drive to repair it, also repair your permissions. Open activity monitor and take a look at your RAM and CPU usage. You may have a program or tow taking up a lot of your resources.

My iMac has slowed down incredibly since upgrading to 10.9.
I have an iMac running Intel 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM.
All of my Mac apps like iPhoto, iTunes and even opening browsers is painfully slow.
I haven't added any virus stuff or anything since the upgrade; the upgrade was almost certainly the cause.
Does anyone know why? Is there a fix for this? Thanks Michel.

My intel imac has slowed down. Why?
When I first got my imac, I ran the benchmark song 2 and it was giving 16 tracks. I have changed nothing much since then apart from just loading my sound library (just Reason NN-XT files) and surfing the net and installing newer patch of OS and a patch for my Logic 7.2. Now it barely gives 13 tracks. What should I do? Is there some clean up that I need to do? I always clean up/reset my Safari after each time I go on the internet. Could this have to do with the patches?
I found something by hazard the other day reading on the web. The Quicktime 7.1 install which is supposed to fix security holes etc... gave me fits when I installed it. For me I needed to rebuild my machine anyway due to some beta testing I was doing, so after the rebuild I did not install Quicktime 7.1 update and those issues have gone away.
I'm not saying rebuild your system, I'm saying that for me it's quicktime related.
Look on macfixit.com and they will have some more info about it.

Downloading Aperture has slowed down photo editing on my iMac. Should I delete iPhoto?
Downloading Aperture has slowed down photo editing on my iMac. Should I delete iPhoto?
So it was only the initial preprocessing after an import of a complete library. If your system drive is nearly full, you should expect performance problems. Try to free at least 20% of your drive.
I would try to keep your iPhoto Application - it is only 1.1 GB and you may need it later; but you can safely delete the iPhoto Library once you are sure, you imported it successfully. iPhoto can do some things Aperture cannot - e.g. greeting cards, calendars. And it is always nice to have a second application for testing purposes, if something should go wrong.
But make a backup copy of the iPhoto Library, just in case. Sometimes you will notice years later that a single image not imported correctly, and then you will be glad you still have a backup of the original iPhoto library.

New Mac has slowed down dramatically
My mac is only a few weeks old and I have noticed that it has slowed down dramatically. It takes quite awhile for programs to load. The fill-in boxes are not keeping up with my typing and it is getting quite annoying. I am new to Imac, so I am not sure how to go about checking the processing speed, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Lately my iMac has slowed considerably and sems to hang up often when merely opening Yahoo or any website. It is not a download issue.
I get the little rainbow wheel that pops up and turns forever and sometimes I cannot get online at all after it begins. Even opening this forum took about 20 seconds as the wheel rotated and waited and waited.
I am using Lion and it is updated. It happens in Safari opr Firefox or even in opening email. I have repaired disk permissiomns often, I clean with "CleanMyMac" on a regular basis but at times I have to simply restart the system whjich does not always solve the problem.
Any ideas how to solve this issue with the little rainbow wheel and inability to open pages? The OP is using Snow Leopard (per his profile), your instructions assumr he is on Lion (10.7.x) therefore they will not work.
To the OP: Insert either the original OS X Install Disc that came with the machine or your Snow Leopard upgrade DVD into the SuperDrive. Then restart the machine, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key - choose the DVD - Select the language - Click the Utilities Menu - Select Disk Utility - Repair HD until no errors appear - Repair Disk Permissions - Quit Disk Utility - Quit Install - Restart computer. -
My iMac is slowing down and it takes a long time to start any application. What can I do to gain more speed?
What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of "crapware" like so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?
Do a search for and download and install OmniDisk Sweeper and OnyX.
Here are some of my tips for deleting or archiving data off of your internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save to disc, Flash drive/s or to ext. hard drive.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon and empty the Trash.
Also, if you save old downloaded .dmg application installer files, you can either archive and delete these or just delete the ones you think you'll never install, again.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be thinned out, moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
Good Luck! -
My mid 2011 MacBook Air has slowed down significantly overnight?
Last night my MacBook Air was working fine.
When I went to use it this morning, it has slowed down significantly. It takes awhile for it to respond to trackpad movement or the keyboard. Opening finder is delayed now, opening any app is delayed now. Booting it back up takes extra long now, probably around a minute compared to thirty seconds before.
I've tried an SMC reset, repairing the disk and repairing disk permissions.
From what I can see, the hardware doesn't appear to be failing, but I could be wrong.
Can anyone help me out? What could possibly be going on with my MacBook? How did this happen overnight?Your MacBook Air's memory is not upgradable, and as you already determined unused storage capacity is not a relevant factor.
There are many reasons a Mac may be performing slower than expected.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you before proceeding.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

I just upgrade to Maverick on my 2 year old MacBook Pro and it has slowed down the computer terribly. All I see every time I do anything is that crazy circle going round and round. I don't recommend you upgrading. How do I get rid of it. I believe it forces you to buy a new macbook!!!!
It does not. First things first have you tried restarting?

I use MacBook with preinstalled OS Leopard since April 2009. I have also regulalry updated my computer system using the Software Update application. However, since my last update on 12th Aug 2011, I have noticed that my system has slowed down. There is long pause between every character I type, delay in switching applications, battery dries out quicker, slow response to every command.
I have started facing this problem after updating following software like iTunes 10.4, Safari 5.0.6, Migration Assistant Update for MAC OS Leopard & Quick Time 7.7 from Software Updater. Although, my OS is still leopard.
I noticed on the Activity Monitor that syncserver is using majority of my RAM and reappers even if I stop the process. Some of its subprocess like AddressBookSync also appears and consumes lot of memory. Is this the problem? Though, I never noticed earlier what size it consumed.
I use Microsoft Office suite for Mac and have also checked and deselected all sync services. Yet, the Process (PID 305) continues to appear in Activity Monitor.
I am no techie, and would appreciate quick help to resolve this issue.
