My iMac has started powering itself off

I have an iMac with a 3.2 GHz Intel i3 core, it is about 9 months old now.  A few weeks ago I upgraded the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion 10.7.1.  The install and upgrade went very smoothly, but I started to see that my machine now turns itself off rather than go to sleep when I am not using it actively  Rather than having to touch a key or move the mouse to wake it, I need to use the power button and wait for a full boot-up.
I have spoken to the support people who suggested the following
run the apple Hardware tests - that found no problems
reset power and p-ram (disconnect all cables, wait for a while, reconnect then power up and hold command-option-p-r keys
After this the frequency with which it powers down seems to have reduced, but it has not stopped altogether.  I am pretty sure it was stopping every time I went away for any length time - I can't say how long, but anywhere from half an hour or more is my best guess.
A couple of days ago it was fine all day, despite me leaving it unattended for a few hours.
Yesterday it powered itself off at some point in the the afternoon when I went out for a meeting.
Today is stayed up while I was out for 3+ hours.
I have used the Console to look at the logs, and there is nothing that looks like an error before an extended gap in the log's times followed by a boot message..
If I explicitly put the iMac to sleep I am pretty sure it always wakes up just fine.
Any suggestions would be welcome
Thanks

Thanks, I habe got it and tne various temperatures are between 35 and 47 Celcius if I leave it alone for a while, they seem to get around 7 degrees hotter when I am using it.

  • My four-year-old MacBook has started shutting itself down

My four year and one month old white Macbook, running Snow Leopard, has started shutting itself down - as in suddenly going from being on to being in a powered-down state - in the last two days.  In the last two days, it has shut itself down at least six times, I've lost count.  Before the last two days, it never shut itself down ever in four years that I can remember.  Five out of the six times it shut itself down, I was playing a PlayStation game via the PCSX emulator for OS X.  I had been playing this game on and off for about a week, give or take a day, before this started, without issue.
Yesterday, I started playing it, and the macbook shut itself down some time into it.  Thinking it was an overheating problem, I let it cool down for 15-20 minutes and tried again, and the macbook shut down again after maybe 10-15 minutes of use.  Again, I let the macbook cool down for 15-20 minutes, the results were the same.  I went through this again, this time ejecting the DVD that was in the drive and unplugging the power cord(to let the macbook run on battery, to see if that would make a difference), and it shut down again.  I then let the macbook cool down for probably 4 hours.  I then engaged in a two hour internet surfing session, in which the macbook did NOT shutdown.  I turned the computer off when I was finished, and a few hours later I tried the game again, and the macbook shut down again, after only 5-10(I think) minutes of use.
This morning, I tried again and there were was another shutdown.  After this, I tried another game(with another emulator), a 2D one as opposed to the 3D one I had been trying, and this went off without a hitch.  After that, I tried a different 3D game(in yet another emulator), and the macbook shut down again(and in this game I hadn't even started anything yet, I was just at the first menu screen were you select a save slot, that kind of thing).  After that, the computer was off for the rest of the day until the last two hours, during which I have been online, and there has been no shutdown as of yet.
I know this is a lot of detail, but I just wanted to illustrate the possible correlation between certain games and the shutdowns, even though I emphasize that I have played all of these games before without issue.  Additionally, I watched a full two and a half hour movie via DVD on my macbook either the night before or two nights before the shutdowns started(having trouble remembering) without any issue.  If it's an overheating issue, it just seems strange to me that it would get through a two and a half hour DVD without shutting down, but a game with 3D graphics - and this is mid-90s polygon early 3D graphics, not 2011 movie-like 3D graphics - would suddenly start making it shut down.
Anyway, I'm very concerned, and looking for any advice any of you can give.  Any assistance is appreciated.

I had two more shutdowns occur.  The first was while playing the same game that cause most of the previous shutdowns.  I had Activity Monitor open, and the CPU % was way over 100.  The second was while playing a 2D game, marking the first shutdown during a 2D game.  The CPU % wasn't as hight as the first time, but still up to around 75-85 or 90%.  I didn't notice the fans ramp up, but I may not have been listening hard enough.

My Sat Pro M70 powers itself off in the middle of the boot-up secuence
After switching if on , it passes post test and enters grub menu (Linux + Windows) or BIOS
without problems, but most of the time after the selected OS start to boot -up, suddenly it powers-off.
The problem is getting bigger and bigger as i hardly can boot any of the OS
As seen on earlier posts I cleaned up CPU vents with a spray just for sure i was not an overheatting problem.
Anyone have an insight of whats can be happening??
    Thanks

Sorry but i have bad news
Finally the 30secs trick did not solve anything.
As on threadID=15116 my laptop does not run and charge battery at the same time, resulting of total drain of battery and need to power-off to charge.
Some times on charging batt while powered-off the batt gets disconnected and no charges anymore. You need to unplug all and start again.
When powered-on sometimes battery charges, some times the battery led shuts off and draining start again till full batt is over.
I've ordered a new AC adapter to try to solve the problem, but if no success my laptop will be finally dead as i estimate a full mainboard replacemente costs 510 (from sources on google, not calling oficial customer service).
This is almost a new computer. Anything over 100$ is innaceptable.

  • Recently, when I upgraded to iOS8.2, my iPhone 5c has been switching itself off randomly even when the iPhone says it still has plenty of battery left. Has anyone else had this after upgrading?

    HI.
a Couple of weeks ago I upgraded to iOS 8.2 on my iPhone 5c. However, recently it has been switching itself off at around 20-40% for no apparent reason and then goes to the plug iPhone in screen.
please can someone help and let me know if they have had the same problem and how they resolved it
    thanks in advance

This happens to me too. Went to the apple store and they check the battery life of my iphone. They took the iphone for 2 days and changed my battery for free. I hope this help you!

  • Hi, has anyone had an issue where their iMac has started sending spam emails to all in their contact list. This has just started happening to mine. The emails are about starting a new begining with a link to I suppose some dodgey web site

My iMac has started sending emails to all those in my contacts list. It's the same email friends are getting but there is nothing in my sent box. Have I got a virus (don't want to mention that word!!) or something on my Mac and how can I get rid of it?
    Thanks

I had a similar issue with a Hotmail account, until I changed the password. Good luck.

  • 3750 powers itself off but power still conencted?

I have a stack of 2 * 3750-48PS switches. For some unknown reason this morning at 9.00am the stack master just powered itself off even though the mains power cable was still connected. Both switches are connected to the same UPS and I can't see any errors logged on the UPS management system. I have looked through syslog and there were no prior warnings as to why the switch did this.
The resolution (hopefully not the final one...) was just to remove the power cable from the rear of the switch and re-insert it. I checked beforehand and the power cable was firmly attached.
Any ideas or is this likely to be a hardware (PSU?) fault?
    Thanks
    Andy

yes, it might be a hardware issue, try using a different power cable.

  • Iphone 5 has started powering down after upgrade to 7.02, help please.

My iPhone 5 started powering down after the 7.02 upgrade I did almost a week ago (3 times).  I realize now that it starts after I see a message notification on the home screen and click on the slider to enter my passcode and reply to the message.
I never get the chance to enter my passcode and the phone turns itself off. The only way I can bring it back is to connect it to my Mac and launch iTunes.  Then it reboots itself and behaves normally for 2 days.
    Any ideas are appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Pismo powers on, lights screen, then powers itself off.

i found a pismo used as a real good deal, knowing that it wouldnt power up. (didn't do anything) After figuring out the power supply was bad, (i tried my wall street yoyo), and replacing the PRAM battery (it read under 3 volts with no load) i can now get it to power up, (I can hear the HD spinning) light the screen, then it shuts off after a few seconds. no startup chime, or anything. any thoughts?

    Dirk,
No startup chime is significant; this indicates that the Startup Manager, based in ROM, has failed to initialize or recognize either RAM or microprocessor or expansion slots or some other hardware component. If the powerbook sound had been muted, removing the all power plus the internal backup battery would have allowed a reset to its default of 'on'.
Here are a few basic troubleshooting tests you may wish to try:
    - When connected, does the power adapter plug at the rear of the powerbook wiggle or feel loose?
    - Even though it should have been reset to defaults when all power was removed, have you reset the PRAM, just to cover all bases?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    - Disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the logic board, then try starting. A failing keyboard can cause various issues.
    - Make sure the microprocessor card is fully seated, difficult to do on the Pismo. Remove the upper RAM module, then push down firmly on the right side of the card next to the HD and next to the palm rest where the multi-pin connector resides on the underside. Do not be shy...press down very hard...you may even hear a snap as it fully seats. Reading the instructions for adding RAM to the lower slot on the microprocessor card may be helpful:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50028
    - Remove the HD, then see if it will start up to the flashing '?'.
    - If removing the top memory module makes no difference, replace the bottom module with the one from the top, then test,

  • My iPhone 4S has started to turn off before its out of battery. There is no pattern it is completely random so I don't know when it will turn off, when I try to turn it back on it says it needs to be charged.

As soon as I plug it in to the charger it reboots to the same percent it was originally on before it turned off for example today it turned off on 10% I tried to turn it back in and it said out of battery so I plugged it in to the charger and it immediately rebooted showing the apple logo and the phone was on 10% when it was fully rebooted.
I was wondering do I need a battery replacement or is this something more serious.
    Many thanks.

    Hi Lukeohiggins,
If you are having issues with your iPhone unexpectely powering off, you may want to try the troubleshooting listed under Power/Battery > Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off in the following article:

  • CMOS Settings wrong - Powers itself off

Help! My 875P (6758) Neo mainboard keeps crashing. The sequence of events is:
Power on - 1  beep then, MSI splash screen then briefly displays
    IDE bus master enabled
    Then double beep then displays:
    DEL F11 F12 F10 (menu)
    CMOS setiings wrong
    F1-Setup F2-Default values
then system powers off after a few seconds. System powers off immediately if I press any F-key no matter which F-key is pressed or whatever I do.
Have tried clearing CMOS with the jumper but problem remains.
    Is my mainboard stuffed?

I removed one of the disk drives (power lead) and managed to boot OK, however, the problem sems to have been triggered by installing a Creative 'Prodikeys' keyboard (ps2). Whenever I attempt to boot with this keyboard connected to the PS2 keyboard port, the same problem occurs (as described above). How can a simple ps2 keyboard device prevent the system from getting past POSTS? I have sent Creative a report of the problem.

  • My Late 2008 MacBook Pro has started rebooting itself due to kernel panics.  Can anyone review the log to help me troubleshoot?

I'm not sure if any recent activity spawned this activity but here's what I've done lately that's new...
I booted to the recovery disk and and ran the disk repair utility on my hard drive.  Then I ran the RecoveryDiskAssistant to create a bootable USB thumb drive, and then I attempted to create a disk image on an external USB hard drive.  About an hour after I started creating the image I aborted the image creation process.  Both the MacBook Pro and the external hard drive were very hot.
I was experimenting, attempting to create the disk image file onto an external hard drive that is half the size of my existing main hard drive, and was not sure the image would fit, so aborted the process before it completed once I realized it might be an overnight task.  I'm wondering if the heat caused by the intense disk activity may have cooked something on my logic board.  Or maybe somethign completely unrelated is the cause, like a recent patch or software update perhaps???
Can anyone help me identify a possible cause of the kernal panics from the two most recent log files attached below?

Answering my own question...  I did more research and have a theory that my Time Capsule hard drive may be causing the kernal panics due to a disk error.  I ran the disk utility to repair the time capsule drive (actually a 3TB Seagate USB drive plugged into my Airport Extreme router).  I plugged the drive directly into my MacBook Pro and ran the repair utility.  It noticed a "minor header" issue and repaired it.  I'm leaving all USB and Firewire devices unplugged for a while and will see if the panics return.  Six years without any problem with my MacBook.  Love Apple.  I'd get a new MacBook, but this one just keeps on working...

  • My iPad Mini has stopped turning itself off when the cover closes.

Is there a setting for this that I have overlooked?

If the cover you bought is not a legitimate apple cover than you may be having the same issue I had.
The one I purchased has a top cover swivel, if you spin it around( meaning the top case cover)
The magnet will return to the correct spot and it will work again. It is only located at one end of the case.
    Hope this might help:)

  • My iMac has starting 'locking up' in a weird way. .

Regardless of where I'm working the screen will start to show segments of the program I'm working with in other parts of the screen. It resembles a kind of strange jig saw puzzle.
It first happened while using Firefox, but it does in all situations. I was balancing my check book and suddenly pieces of the register appeared elsewhere on the screen. Wherever I clicked the mouse, other pieces would appear. Often the Apple Menu was covered so I was only able to clear things by using the "Sleep" keys to get to a black screen. When I woke the computer  after a few minutes, the process would not immediately start again but would in a few minutes.  Sometimes the sleep trick accomplished nothing.
    Any one have any ideas?

Just so you know, this forum is for the older PPC Macs. You have an Intel Mac.
But I have asked the Hosts to move your thread to the Lion forum.
