My iMac hums, it is not fan related

Dear All,
My reliable trusty old 24 inch iMac (one of the first intel ones) has developed a hum, it is annoying as **** (i use it to make music) and I am wondering how I can tell what it is?
I've set my energy saver to allow hard drives to go to sleep and indeed, when that happens, the hum stops. It starts again when the computer wakes up. It's not the fans, they have a totally different sound.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Martin

See if the hum changes with the intensity level of your display.
I had a hum develop in my 24" early 2009 iMac that changed with the intensity level. High intensity, no hum, low intensity--i.e. that needed to color calibrate the display for print matching--much hum. Apple replaced an assembly in the display circuitry and it has been hum free since.

I have an older iMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. The other day I started playing with a bluetooth speaker (may or may not be related). Now I cannot get past the blue screen on startup.
I can get into safe mode. But no regular startup.
I tried disabling bluetooth, thinking that might be related. It didn't help.
I even tried using the install disc to run disc utility. That didn't work so I reloaded the OS.
But I still get hung on the blue screen when trying a normal startup.
    All help would be appreciated.

Try resetting the PMU/SMU and PRAM/NVRAM. You'd need to identify the mode of resetting depending on the model of your G5 iMac. The Apple support sites that would help you for this are –

  • 24" iMac humming noise "Problem Solved"

    Hello,
I reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update and the annoying humming sound coming from my iMac is gone,I have read alot of people were having the same problem with the Aluminum 24" model.

I'm having the same thing with my 2008 24 inch iMac. I'm not sure if it is the hard drive or one of the fans, but there is a loud WHOOSH every time it starts up or wakes from sleep and the whirring noise is pretty much constant. It used to be completely silent, so this new sound is very noticeable.
Lately, the noise with abruptly stop and then make a struggling sound as if whatever is causing it is either going away or making it stop revolving or whatever (it would help if I could determine exactly WHAT is making the noise). I check iStat, but can't see any wide variance in the fans rpm speeds when it is happening or the heat of various components spiking. It is not affecting my computer use as it did the first time I had a similar problem (which turned out to the the hard drive, since replaced under warranty).
I bought Apple Care for this computer, so it is still covered under that, but I don't know if the fact that the noise is completely annoying to listen to all day is enough reason to bring it in for service and be covered under the extended warranty.

I suspect you have hardware problem with a fan sensor. Doing a software install will not help the machine needs to be taken in for service. If you run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode it should reveal the error code. If it does not then run AHT an additional 2-3 times to be sure in Extended Mode. Each pass will take about 30-60 minutes.

  • IMac 20" Noisy HD or fans???

Hi! Can you hear the noise from your HD continually? I got a 20" iMac and a 250 GO HD with ref. like that : WDC WD2500JS-40NGB2. Is it a Maxtor?
Anyway. Everybody is talking about silent iMac 20"!! Mine is noisy... I've been told that you can just hear a fan if you put ear near to the iMac... I can hear it yes but i really have to have my ear next to the iMac. That's not the problem here.
The problem is i can continually hear another noise that drives me crazy.... Working in a silent place, it's really annoying. It's like a fan running but with a razor noise.... Being at 2 meter from my iMac I still can hear that noise.
May this could be the HD noise? It comes from the left of the apple on the front side of the iMac!
Is it normal or not? I can't read no experience like that with 250 HD.
Thanks for any info or advices

At this address (svm mac french mac magazine) you can see a video about the inside of the 20" iMac and they're talking about the cooling system of the iMac.. it seems to be cooled not by water but with vapor...
Anyway in this video you can see a big fan in the left corner , just under what it seems to be the hard disk.. This is exactly where my noise comes from!!!
This one is running as STRONG as i can FEEL it running, turning. When posing my hand on the iMac, at this place, it is trembling, vibrating.. CRAZY... if i touch the place where is the other fan (on the right side).. i can hear it but it's not running fast as the other one who is making this ()&)&)"/(ç?%=?* noise
    http://svmmacblogs.vnunet.fr/2006/02/limac_refroidi.html
One more time, people with iMac Core Duo 20" , can you feel it too vibrating?
This is the noise i'm complaining about...

  • IMac w/firmware upgrade not connecting thru chooser

Grade school iMacs (crt style) connect to library search software by selecting an alias on the local iMac that is for the program on the shared volume on the library Mac. This share is Read Only to everyone.
Any iMac running OS 9.x that does not have the firmware upgrade for OS X is connecting fine as they always have. Click the alias, brings up the chooser to do the STUDENT logon to the library share and begins the execution of the software on the local mac.
Some used iMacs that were added to the library have had their firmware upgraded for OS X. When these select the same alias - they get an error saying they do not have execution rights to the alias. But, if you manually go to the Chooser and log on to the libary share - then execute the actual program file - it works just fine.
So it appears that the firmware update has glitched the machine's ability to log on to the library share and execute the search program via the alias.
iMac iLamps (flat screen with round base)seem to work fine. Switch to OS9 via Classic, go through the Chooser and run the library search software. So seems our problem child(ren) is/are the CRT iMacs with the firmware upgrade.
Ideas? Anyone else run into this?
    Thanks,

You didn't indicate how long the iMac was running without problems, before you decided to upgrade the memory. It's possible that the display's degraded picture quality is not directly related to the memory installation, since that procedure is relatively non-invasive on a slot-loading iMac. The board could have had a problem that would manifest itself after a sufficient period of ON time, that went unnoticed, prior to its sale on eBay. Sellers often buy pallets of computers in unknown working condition, that are stacked on top of each other and wrapped with plastic. Because the cases often have cosmetic damage, they're parted out. If the computer powers up and everything appears to be working fine, it's shut down and disassembled. If the unit were left ON long enough, perhaps any problems that it had (prior to being pulled from service) would eventually surface. I'd suggest trying the other board that you bought.

  • Movies in my iMac's iTunes do not show up Apple TV(1st Gen)

So frustrated. Movies in my iMac's iTunes do not show up on my Apple TV(1st Gen) in the Shared Movie area. I've done the Media Type fix to "movie." I've re-started and re-booted and changed the Apple TV from ethernet to wireless and re-connected iTunes. Renamed the library. Everything's up to date. Grrr.

I have now restored Factory Settings on the Apple TV. Looked promising until iTunes hangs everytime I tried to enter the podcast page of the sync options. And I get errors that my newest movies, created in Final Cut Pro X with the Share with 720p Apple Devices export settings are not compatible with Apple TV.
    Unbelievable.

  • I dont see the iDVD icon on my iMac? It is not in my Finder.

Where can I finder the iDVD? It is't in my Finder?

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?

    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • My imac and ipad2 will not connect to the internet with Windstream using an 2wire DSL modem.

Help my brand new imac and ipad2 will not connect to the internet with Windstream using an "2WIRE" DSL modem.  Windstream tech service is useless.  i can connect with the built in router through Ethernet or wireless, but still no connecting to internet, help!  windstream said everything is working on their end, yea right.  What i do know is that both the mac and ipad work at other places and can connect with wireless connected to the internet, so i know it's not the apple products.
these are brand new machines with lion.
This is my first mac, so I’m still new to how it works, which is not helping either so a detailed help would be great.  Please help before my wife losses it
    thanks

There is a 2701HG-B, and a 2701HG-D.  If not labelled on the modem, ask Windstream which one they presently supply or how to tell the difference.
By the way tell your wife it isn't that bad.  At least you have an ethernet DSL modem.  There were times where DSL modems had RJ-11, USB, and Ethernet, and all three were used to provide access.  At least now only the craziest DSL providers still use those modems.

I have just bought a new Imac and it will not load my copy of FCE 3.5 as it says "PowerPC applications are no longer supported". So how do I get to use the version of FCE I am used to and have paid for ?

I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the 27" screen from your iMac to view and work FCE in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCE and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

I have different icloud and iTunes id's and I want to do homesharing for all my devices. I'm trying to set up a new iMac but homesharing is not working. Should it be the itunes or iCloud id?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Preferably your iTunes account, but it shouldn't really matter for getting homesharing turned on, as long as it's a valid ID.

  • Imac crashed and will not boot up

So my iMac crashed and will not boot. The power will come on and when it switches to the boot sequence it powers off.  I bought Black Tie protection at Best Buy but when I took it to them they shipped it to Apple. The problem was never fixed. Apple said it was a software issue to reload the OS. Well i did that and not even a day went by and it is doing the same thing. Any suggestions would be helpful...

I agree with BGreg that you should run Apple Hardware Test , however run it in Extended Mode. If no errors turn up run it several times. It's a lengthy test so be patient. Also here is what Apple says about your symptoms in Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup.
I hope you have been backing up your system, if not then if you can boot into Safe Mode as suggested you should immediately backup using either a clone or Time Machine. That should be the #1 priority to preserve your data.

It would depend on how old your IMac is, how mush memory you have, it it can be upgraded by OWC, etc. I have a 2006 Macbook Pro and would NOT put Mavericks on it or espeacially FCP 10.1.1 on it because the most memory it can have is 4 GB. You need at least 8 GB to work with Final Cut Pro 10.1.1. IMHO.
I would try to find a copy of Final Cut Express perhaps.
