My imac intel 20" has died....

Hello, i wrote from Spain.
I have a imac intel 20" with the next config:
core duo 2.33 Ghz.
500 gb hd.
ATI Graphic Card 256 Mb.
2 GB Ram.
Today after 4 months of happy use my imac show me a kernal panic....
Restart the machine, and the Kernel Panic was repeat.
I found in the forum, and I reset the SMC, the PRAM, the NVRAM...and the machine not start....
I feel so bad...I love this machine, but never thought that this issue ocurrs in a imac....
Well, in the third o fourth try the machine start, and make a backup and reinstall the OS, all ok, the reinstall, the install of bundle apps....everything shows fine....but...when I start to work with th iDVD app (simple task) the machine show me another kernel panic and not start....
Other thing I do it´s disconnect and connect the RAM that in the Apple Support Pages says...and nothing the machine not start...
What can I do?
The better solution is call to service and get the machine to the technicians...or I can make anything..???....
Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
maybe this is helpful:
The XLabs have a good FAQ for resolving Kernel Panics.
Look here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If that doesn't help, calling Service is what I would propose.
Good Luck

  • My iMac G5 iSight has died.  New iMac on order.

My 5+ year old 20" iMac G5 iSight has died after a recent 3 hour power outage.  I have nothing.  It has acted a little stubborn with some restarts recently and I waited a little too long to replace.  I tore it down and replaced the PRAM battery but no luck, I am thinking it is a power supply issue.  I have a new iMac on order which should arrive next week.  I also should have a good Time Capsule backup.
I would like to remove the hard drive and put it an external firewire enclosure, reboot from that and restore my data and applications.  Will be going from a PPC iMac to an Intel.  Is this a valid option?  My main concern is my Quicken data and program.  I have been running Quicken 2006 and don't really want to upgrade from the reviews I have read.  Don't have the install disk for Quicken 2006 anymore.
    Thanks in advance!
    Jim

Removing the drive is an excellent idea, you should be able to mount your firewire external and use it on your new machine.
I'm not sure if you will be able to reboot from the FireWire external, it depends on the damage done by the hard shutdown (get yourself a USP, I use APC models, they're very good and have saved me many a time, I live in the country and the power is always going off), but it's likely that you can.
    Please post back with results,

  • IMac intel 2006 has Airport, but theres no connection

My iMac 2006 Intel has an Airport Card but theres no connection and the airport symbol is not in the menu at the desktop screen!!!!

Is this a new problem - was it working previously?
Have you tried the simple stuff first - a restart, check System Preferences>Network, is Airport (WiFi) listed as an option, is the 'show in menu bar' item ticked?
In the Apple Menu>About this Mac, is Airport/Wifi listed under Network, and if selected does it give any information about the Airport card installed?

  • Imac intel - which wireless option compatible with mac/pc

I really appreicate some advice about going wireless. I am on telewest broadband (now virgin broadband) I have an imac intel which has an Aiport card inside. See below:
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x89)
    Wireless Card Locale: Worldwide
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.80.79.1)
Wireless compatibility with Mac and PC
My son has a pc laptop (will wireless automatically see both mac and pc in the same house?)
I have been googling without success - because a lot of the jargon is beyond me.
Hope this is okay to post here.
IMac Intel Mac OS X (10.4.9) purchased early 2006

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might find that MacCam (http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/) can help with a compatible driver for that device - it's by no means sure, but the MacCam project does support a number of Logitech USB webcams.

  • Intel 20" iMac hard drive has failed, what can I do?

    Hello everyone,
My white 20" iMac (late 2006) has just died and I think the hard drive might be irreparable.
Yesterday it wouldn't boot up and froze on the grey screen, however it worked fine from a safe boot. But today it would not boot at all, not even in safe mode. So I booted from the original OSX Tiger discs and ran Disk Utility. I tried to repair the disc permissions but this failed and told me the disc needed repairing so I hit Repair Disk. This also failed, saying the disk could not be repaired and must be erased and to reinstall the OS.
Is there anything I can do to rescue my hard drive? (I backed up about a week ago so I'm ok... ish)
Or will I have to visit an Apple store for a genius to have a go?
Does anyone know what might cause this sort of failure? Is it just substandard parts reaching their retirement age?
Also, does anyone know how much a replacement HD is likely to cost me?
Thanks for any help and suggestions.

I'm afraid that in the end the hard drive was 'too old' as the genius put it.
Is it really too much to ask for a hard drive to last more than four years?
That's on the low end, but not entirely unusual. "Normal" lives seem to vary fairly widely.
Also, I was not at all impressed by the competence of the genius I dealt with. He didn't even know how to boot in safe mode or from an external drive.
Yeah, in my limited experience, they vary, too, but that's rather basic. Must be a newbie.
I am now up and running with two backups in place.
    Yay!
Also, I have given the failed hard drive to a friend who will try and recover the last weeks data for me as the Apple genius said he didn't know how to do that either.
That's a specialty Apple doesn't do, at least not in most stores. See [Data Recovery|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Recover.html]. The services that do it have (expensive) specialized hardware and software.
Needless to say I am not happy with Apple's hardware or customer care.
I'd agree about the "Genius," but not necessarily the life of the drive.

  • My imac intel display is frozen.  Both the mouse and my network is working.  Has anyone had problems like this and were you successful at fixing it?

My imac (Intel) display is frozen.  Both the mouse and the network are working.  I've shut down various times, pulled the cord from the receptacle on the power strip, and restarted several times.  No luck.  Has anyone had problems like this and were you successful at fixing it?  Thanks.  Would appreciate any help.  Paula

Same problem, but a c.2009 iMac running OS X 10.9.1. Just happened overnight. Presently, I'm able to access my HD via wireless via laptop and copying all non-backed up files to an external drive. So far, Paula is the only other person I've found with this same problem and hers was three years ago! Going to keep searching for an answer.

  • IMac (Intel) Restore DVDs don't work if the drive has been formatted first

    Here's an interesting find...
we have a gob of iMac G5s that were being re-imaged and one iMac Intel was mistakenly re-imaged with a G5 dmg (via Firewire Target Disk Mode).
As expected, the iMac Intel wouldn't boot from a 10.4.4 image built on a G5, but now when I try to restore the Intel back to the out-of-the-box state (booting from its OS dvds), the installer reports "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. Mac OS X cannot start up from this volume." The Options button is greyed-out (where normally you could select Options and choose Erase and Install).
Further inspection on another out-of-the-box Intel iMac (in Firewire Target Disk Mode) shows its hard drive is actually partitioned into two volumes: One is a 200MB partition, the other is the remainder and mounts as Macintosh HD. The 200 MB partition will not mount (via Disk Utility).
I'm assuming that since the Intel iMac's drive was erased prior to booting from it's OS DVDs, the necessary partitions are not present.
Anyone have any info? I'm guessing that since I did not initiate the restore from the DVD's "Install Mac OS X and Applications" script the drive did not get partitioned correctly...
    TIA -m.

Yeah, I found that out. Here's one link that describes the issue:
    http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=08405
My point was to illustrate the OS Installer/Disk Utility’s inability (while booted from the OS DVD) to provide the option to choose the GUID partitioning scheme for a volume during an “erase and install” on a drive that has been previously formatted under the “traditional” partition scheme – the “options” button does not appear.
To reinstall to factory defaults, I had to boot the target iMac into Firewire disk mode and use another iMac (Intel) and its Disk Util to get the “options” button to select the GUID partition scheme.
Oh well, I’m sure Apple’s working on that…
    -m.

  • My iMac (Intel) has stopped writing DVDs and CDs - what do I do?

My iMac (Intel) has stopped writing DVDs and CDs - what do I do first?

You can try one of the CD/DVD cleaning discs but I doubt it will work. Your superdrive has probably failed.
you can have Apple replace it, for around $120, or buy any brand external DVD drive that connects by USB port and it will work with your Mac. Most cost around $30.

  • Intel iMac (Early 2008) Has vertical lines on the screen and doesn't boot.

My iMac froze up tonight, and upon restarting it there are a number of yellow vertical line segments throughout the display, and it will not boot completely into the OS. The spinning segment just stops and the computer does nothing. I inserted my Leopard disc to run a hardware test but holding D during bootup does nothing, even though I can hear the disc spin up.

    Any Thoughts?

I've had this same exact issue and have had to have the graphics card replace (nvidia 8800gs).
It seems these graphics cards are defective in some way.
Unfortunately my iMac is out of warranty and I must pay 3500dkk ( 500usd ) for repair.
I'm very disappointed as to the reliability of these iMacs as I've only had it for 2 years my old iMac g4 1ghz has performed better than this and is actually what I'm using until my so called new iMac is back from repairs

  • Windows **** using parallels, imac intel HELP!

    Here's my set up:
airport extreme firewall (dhcp / nat + reasonable passwords)
imac intel running parallels running xp sp2
I'm running call logging software and xp has just c**pped it's pants on me, corrupt data files and all my work is down the toilet, I have backups but not recently as I would like. But I don't know for the life of me why it happened.
The only weird thing is that I have 3 base stations, one main, two remotes, one of the remotes - the one feeding the imac, disappeared off the network, so I rebooted the main one, and it reappeared, checked the config - it was fine and is now working again I don't know if this is related.
    1. Is this windows s**king as per usual
    2. Or is it a virus taking advantage of windows (windows is on the net through shared networking through parallels and the airport extreme system)
    3. or have a got a dud hard drive and it's about to die on me?
    Urgent help required!
    Thanks,

  • Airport has died!!

Hi all, I've had my imac intel for a couple of months (thank you Steve!) and I've been using my wireless network with no problems . . . until now! I know my router is working, I can still conect my psp to the internet, but when ever I try to conect my mac I get a message in safari telling me I'm not conected to the internet and the option to open internet utilities. If you've seen this program you'll understand what I mean next! The first three lights are always green, but the last three lights keep on jumping from green to red and sometimes yellow??! I've restarted the router and the cable modem and the mac and ever the toaster! but it doesn't help. I'm currently using a network cable to snake from the router to my room (this doesn't bother me but it's driving my Mum mad!!) Every now and then all the lights are green and I try to give safari a go, very infrequently it'll work but I'll get two or three pages in to digg.com and it'll die again!
I've also noticed a 'rouge' signal in my airport menu (incidetly it's call 'BushHill' which is also the name of the town I live in?) But it's password protected and it isn't there all the time??!?!?
My router is pretty old, about three years, but if I can still conect my psp to it the problem shouldn't be there? Or because it's old is there a functionallity problem with the 801.11 (or whoever it is!)
My Mother really would like someone to help me get rid of the 'unsightly' blue cable!!!!

I don't think it is your airport. I think someone in your area has got into the same "wavelength" as you. It happened to me and also my nextdoor neighbor. Someone has signed into the same band as you are and when they shut down, they close out the whole access. I talked to apple support for an entire weekend and what they suggested was go door to door asking if anyone has added new electronic equipment that could be interrupting the signal. I was reluctant to try this, but before I could even attempt explaining it to the neighbors, my system came back up. I have no suggestions as to how to handle it. Just thought I would let you know what has probably happened. Apple support did suggest that when I was able to get on using airport, I should change the channel that I was accessing ie: if I was using channel 11, I should try something a bit farther away, such as channel 3.

  • PowerMac G4 has died, looking to upgrade

Basically, my PowerMac G4 has died and I am looking at upgrading my machine.
I have two options available to me; either a Powermac G5 quad 2.5Ghz processor with 5Gb of ram, or a 24" Intel iMac with a 2.17Ghz dual core processor and 2.5Gb of ram.
I will be using it mainly for Music editing on Cubase and Logic (when I buy it) and a little bit of Photo editing using Photoshop CS5.
Which one will be better to get?
    Thanks

    The Intel machine.
If you are going to acquire SW, then there is no reason to stay with the Power PC platform, especially since most of the recent Adobe and Apple "pro" apps won't run there any more (like Photoshop CS5 and Logic Studio, for instance).
The Quad is a fine machine, very powerful, but there is the cooling system issue to worry about plus the fact that, at best, you will be getting a five-year-old machine, which is always a gamble and potentially a major headache.

  • I have a 27inch iMac, is this classed as a iMac (Intel) within the community?

I have a 27inch iMac, is this classed as an iMac (Intel) in the. Community? It's just that I want to post a problem, but want to be sure I'm posting to the right community. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for responding so quickly. My problem is that when I turn on from the power button, the system starts up and gets to the logon screen. I enter my password (I am the administrator) , the screen then goes white with the apple logo in the middle of the screen and the circling (like a clock face) appears. This goes on for about 45 seconds then a 'no entry' symbol with a gear cog underneath appears. I cannot get any further. I am trying to follow the manuals advice. When I use Mac Os X Utilities to repair the drive,I have two main drives appear, one is my hard drive ( which is greyed out-and will not let me repair) The other is a SATA drive, I'm not sure what this is but the repair found a fault that it couldn't repair. I then thought that maybe I need to re-install Lion, but I'm not sure which drive to choose? Also when I try to do a recovery from my external hard drive, it cannot find any drives to use???
I am now wondering if my Hard Drive has died!
