My iMac Intel Duo & Airport Card Don't work...

I am a recent PC to Mac switcher. I have very little experience using Airport Cards, and quite a bit of experience netowrking in the PC world.
Here's my issue. I have my new iMac connected to my wireless network (D-Link 524 - 802.11g). I have tried using both static and dynamic ip. I use WEP 64-bit encryption.
My iMac has absolutely no problem connecting to the network, and obtaining an IP address. Problem is, it constantly disconnects itself, every couple of minutes or so.
I purchased a new super-antenna for the router, incase it was a signal issue. This certainly improved the signal strength, however, the mac keeps losing connection.
The router is situated within 30 feet of the mac, and only one wall - dry-wall, not concrete.
Any suggestions? I never have any issues with my Dell and Toshiba laptops.

You need the older airport utility.. that can be installed on Lion or Mountain Lion.. it cannot be installed on Mavericks.. do you have an older computer even a windows one.. or can access, borrow or bribe a friend over for drinks with laptop.. then you can configure your expresses.. !!
There is a rather complex workaround on Mavericks.. when I posted it in the past.. Apple deleted it.. go figure.
Kappy's post is still there.

  • Crashing Imac intel duo 2.0. with deep buzzer sound

I've been working on a imac intel duo 2.0 gig (4 gigs ram, 250 hd) and It's been driving me crazy as it crashes between 2 and 5 times a day. I'm doing constant photo shooting and processing from capture pro to photoshop, but the files are all pretty small- like 8-12 megs each, and I have to say that I've used these programs for years and found them to be extremely stable. There is still like more than half of the hard drive available for files, and I try to keep it that way by pulling old files off it to an external drive.
Often the machine will crash while in a finder type function often early in the day, before I've even opened any photo files or apps. Usually it just freezes. Rarely it will have a screen black out, and when that happens, I hear the deep buzzing sound that must signify something- I don't know what.
I've tried running the apple disc utility, and repairing the permissiions from there, but it hasn't really helped. I've disconnected and reconnected the camera, the external hard drive, my Wacom tablet, nothing really helps. Now that I think of it, I haven't replaced the mouse- could that possibly be the cause?
Oh well, any wisdom on this topic would be appreciated, especially what is that loud buzzer trying to tell me.
    Thanks-TD

You are right it's not an available space issue so now I'm beginning to agree with Allan. If you don't know how to run AHT, please click the Hardware Test link. Run it in Extended Mode too, not using Extended Model does not test very thoroughly. If it reports back with no errors run AHT 2-3x in Extended Mode to be sure. This test is time consuming so start it and come back in about 40 - 60 minutes. If it reports errors then you can either Google them or post them here and someone will try to interpret them. However whatever the error is you should write it down and bring the machine in for service at your local Apple Store or AASP.

  • Is the iMac intel duo plug and play?

I am getting a iMac intel duo for christmas and this will be my first mac. Does it recognise new hardware like a usb memory stick or do you have to manually detect it?

I don't think that I would trust that idea. It would be safer and save you a world of hurt from finding out the hard way to eject anything that appears with an icon on the Mac desktop, especially if that icon is accompanied with the eject arrow icon in the left-side panel of a Finder window. There are plenty of folks who have screwed up Firewire/USB devices by just at will disconnecting them. USB key drives, in my experience, are pretty much nonrecoverable if you fry them.

  • Is there a virtual pc or Windows emulator for iMac intel duo?

    Hi there,
I just got a new iMac intel duo last week and its fantastic. Unfornatuly I need to run a stock market program that only runs on windows...
This is the only program that i need to run on the windows platform.
I was told to get the intel duo as it was the way things were going and that I may have to wait for the software side of things to catch up.
I currently have a workaround that is painfull, but I would like to have it all on the one machine...
Is there a virtual pc version for the iMac intel duo or are there other emulators I could use??
    Desparate..

  • Sharing hard drive with windows xp on imac intel duo core

    Hi,
I was wondering whether I could give over anymore of the hard disk on my imac intel duo core to Windows xp? If so, how would I go about doing that?
    Thanks in advance

At this point I think that you would need to use Boot Camp to remove the current partition and then make a bigger one and reinstall Windows.
Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows.
The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.

  • IMac Intel 24" - Airport Wireless Rate

    Here is my setup:
1 - 24" Intel iMac 2.33 / 2 GB (Located 10 feet across from AP against a wall, in a large apt complex) Avg rate 13mb. I typically sit in front of the computer in between the AP and the iMac, though I see this low transfer rate without me in front of it and if I pull it out from the wall.
1 - Airport Extreme N Mounted 6 feet off the floor on opposite wall)
I have WPA2 Personal setup and WDS as Main, it is running firmware 7.3.2. There are 8 wireless clients connected (2 Macbooks, 1 Tivo, 2 iphone 3G, 2 AppleTV, 1 Wifi Cam)
1 - Airport Express N Located 5 feet to the left of the iMac on the same wall, connected to network via WDS, used as wireless bridge for HP Laserjet Printer (Average Rate 54mb)
Using iStumbler I have identified on average 8-14 other wireless networks in my area. I have adjusted my AP channel, moving it from crowded channels such as 6 or 11 to 3, 4, 10, 8 and 9... trying to keep at least 2 to 3 channels between my channel and the others I see.
Channels 1,2,3,4,5 and 10 don't work to well.. sometimes the iMac can never reconnect to the AP if these channels are selected. I have to use my MacBook to adjust the channel back a different channel... its pretty hit and miss... sometimes it works... some times it doesn't. The transfer rate will start out high... 120 and than drop settling on 13 no matter what channel with or without IR turned on. I avoid IR as it can drag down performance on its own and with 8 wireless clients already pulling on resources... I just avoid it.. doesn't seem to solve this issue.
Also, my Macbook Pro and MacBook can be positioned in the same location as my iMac and still maintain transfer rates of 120-130 on average.
I do not have a wireless phone in the house and the microwave is located on the other end of the apartment. the only thing near the AP is a LCD tv 3 feet below it. I have an external MyBook Drive sitting next to my iMac along with a HP Laserjet printer and ScanSnap Scanner... these devices are sitting level or below the imac... there are no shelves located in close proximity to the top of the iMac.
One other thing I am noticing... Airport Utility on my iMac has difficulty locating my base station at times even with full strength indicated in the menu bar.
All other devices connected to the AP average 54 -130 mb/s - This includes my AppleTV that is in a different room and has to transmit through a hollow wall. As well as my Tivo and Wifi cam.
The AP is set for 802.11n g/b compatible... though I have tried playing with this setting as well... not all of my network up to the N standard.. Tivo for example does not have a 802.11n adapter yet.
I have read through several support postings on various Mac Support Sites as well as this one... I have reset the SMU, deleted related Pref files and recently I did a Archive and Install of the system. At one point I did roll back the firmware on the AP based off feedback others had posted... no luck.
I have a feeling this is a hardware issue, either the Card in the iMac is bad or the Antenna is damaged or faulty.
I am looking for other suggestions... I want to avoid taking my computer in for repair as often it they come back in worse shape than when they went in...
    Signal Stats
    Strength/Nose
    iMac -43 / -95 13mb/s
    Airport Express N Printer WDS Printer Bridge -36/ -92 54 mb/s
    MacBook -27 / -96 130 mb/s

it's actually working now, don't know how but it is.
still though, airport iMac shows 40 as peak connection in AirTrafficControl and right beside it the Macbook shows a peak of 55-56
    wow.

  • Older iMac not recognizing AirPort card

I manually installed an AirPort Extreme card in my G4 iMac. I followed the instructions exactly. However, it's not showing up anywhere in the Network Preferences. It's like I never installed it. I think I did everything right, I even went back and did it again, still to no avail.
Is there something I'm missing here? Remove screws, plug in card, restart computer, right?
Part of what be my problem is I'm using a newer iMac that does have an AirPort card built-in as a base station, (or, at least, that's the plan- is nothing showing up because I don't have a real base station?). Maybe I'm totally wrong about all this, but I don't think that should stop my computer from not recognizing the card.
It is an older card, bought refurbished from the Apple Online Store.

Which G4 iMac did you install the card into? Does it have a clock speed of 1 GHz or faster? Click on the Apple menu and select "About this Mac".
Assuming the clock speed is 1 GHz or faster, run System Profiler and look in the "AirPort:" field. If the card is not recognized, the field will be blank.

  • IMac G5 needs Airport Card

I just discovered my iMac G5 doesn't have an Airport card so I can't get on the internet with it.  Does anyone know where I could get one?  All help greatly appreciated.  A workaround?

Thanks Meriam!  I didn't realize they were so expensive but if I want to get my G5 on the internet I guess Steve gets another bite of my stash.    Think I'll play around with Firewire transfer from my Intel iMac SL  first though.  Any suggestions?
My reason for having the G5 (which I got at a "bargain" ) is to have a machine I could use to try to learn BSD and Unix without the danger of blowing away all the files on my "real" computer.  My "bargain" has already cost me the price of a rebuilt. But looking on the bright side, "it's the problems that we learn from" and I've learned loads from this unit.

  • IMac dies after airport card insertion

I have an iMac G5 (edu version) that I wanted to upgrade with an airport card from another iMac G5. I inserted the card and connected it, did not touch or change anything else, and when I pressed the power button, an explosion occured about where the power unit seems to be and smoke came out. Since the the iMac is dead. How can this be?

Hmm- the card must be compatible. It's an original Airport card that came from another iMac G5. Installed incorrectly is a possibility, but I don't see how. The installation is quite idiot-proof and I'm only a 50% idiot
    Coincidence, however, sounds quite unprobable.
Maybe some loose part fell into the power supply and caused a short circuit while I moved the iMac from a vertical to a horizontal position. Maybe some mean little animal that had chosen to live in there got effraid and urinated on a circuit. There are indeed many more possibilities than meets the eye

  • How to connect my old imac G4 (no airport card) to lynksys router

I am going to buy a new imac. I want to put my old G4 15" with no airport card installed into my daughter's room. I have a linksys wireless router WRT54G connected to my dsl modem. The linksys wireless router is linked to my imac via an ethernet cable. My laptop has an airport card that I can use the internet through. Can I put an airport express in her room and connect that way?

Oh, sorry, I was thinking you wanted to connect the AX wirelessly to the Linksys.
Yes, you can connect the AX to the Linksys with an Ethernet cable and then use the AX in "bridge" mode to allow wireless client to connect to it for Internet access.
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, make these settings:
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    - Apply the new setting.
    - Wait at least 5 minutes.

  • Airport Card don't appears

I've installed an Airport Card (2003 M8881LL/A) in my Power Mac G5 7,2 and it don't appears in the System-Profiler.
    The OS is 10.5.8.

Open System Preferences>Network, see if new port detected pops up, or click on the little plus icon after unlocking the lock & see if you can add Airport.
