My iMac is dying. What do I replace it with?

I'm pretty sure my Graphics card is dead. See my post here https://discussions.apple.com/message/21496843?ac_cid=op123456#21496843
I don't know what to do, I'm sure I'm looking at a $300+ bill if not more like $500. For that price, I should just start looking at a whole new computer.
I like the idea of an SSD, but in all cases, I'm looking at a minimum of $1500.
I like my iMac, but my 27" screen is really big, almost too big. I like the 21.5" but I feel like I should always be getting more for my money than the last computer I bought.
This might be the first time I get less than what I'm replacing.
For example:
My iMac (Late 2009):
27"
2560x1440
2.8Ghz i7
8GB 1067 DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 4850 (512)
New iMac
21.5"
1920x1080
2.7-2.9GHz i5
8GB 1600 DDR3
GeForce 640M-650M (512)
If I upgrade to 16gb DDR3 it goes to $1750-$2150
I paid ~$2700 3 years ago for upgraded everything on the 27" iMac (Late 2009) and now it's (basically) dead.
I don't feel like repeating such a costly investment in another 3 years... :-(
What do I do????
In a way I also miss my laptop (an old 12" PowerBook G4) but in order to get close to the specs I currently have, I have to look at the 15 RetMBP and again we're getting into the $2199+ range again.
Help me decide please!!!

The reply on your other thread is amazing. I find myself wondering how they can properly diagnose a hardware problem online? You obviously are having heating problems causing the GPU to act like that. Maybe it's just a fan problem or maybe even just a buildup of dust inside he computer impeding airflow? Before I give up on a three or four year old iMac I would at least try to vacuum out the vents on top and bottom of the iMac. If that didn't help I'd take it to the nearest Apple Store or AASP and have it properly diagnosed and get an estimate for repairs. Check your serial number to see if your iMac is included in the hard drive recall, not all late 2009 iMacs are. I sure wouldn't give up because someone looked at some photos and said that your graphics card is broke. The best advice he gave you is to back up your system.

Well first off you'll need another browser, Firefox allows many other search engine choices, Chrome is made by Google so that's no help really.
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
Once you have Firefox installed (and check the status of your plug-ins) you can search online for alternate search engines, there are hundreds.
Duck Duck Go is very privacy oriented.

    You can find more here

Once you find one you like and visit the site you can add it to the Firefox search selection like this
You also can remove Google if you wish totally or just not use it.
Firefox also has Ad Block Plus, Ghostery, BetterPrivacy add-ons which combined and enabled will stop the trackers of Google and others.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 - did my hard drive die? And what should I replace it with?

    Hi,
I inherited my late husband's 2008 Mac Pro (3,1 model) which had 2 x 500GB hard drives in it and 6GB of RAM. I filled the remaining hard drive bays with 1TB drives (I take a lot of video so needed the extra space). The boot drive was partitioned 50/50 in Boot Camp. I've upgraded the RAM to 10GB and I am currently running Lion.
Today, while doing something as innocuous as scrolling down a web page, the bottom half of my screen went black and the top half began flashing wildly. When it  stopped after several seconds, the mouse would not respond and I could not click on anything. If flashed a bit more, and then I had mouse control back but could not click on anything - web links, applications, finder. After waiting patiently but getting nowhere, I powered the machine down manually, and when I re-started it, it failed to boot. The chime sounded, the apple appeared, and the little revolving wheel, but at the point where the screen would normally go blue then display the desktop, it just went white. The fans spin, but otherwise it's very silent.
I tested with a second display, got the same issue. I tried booting to recovery mode but it went back to the white screen. I could start in target mode, and there were no issues with flickering screen, so I don't think it's the graphics card. Then I tried browsing to the hard drive over the network, but it wasn't showing on the PC network page, nor could I connect to it via the home theater system, which I can normally do as the streaming app launches on start-up. I am assuming this means the drive has failed? It's the original, and we bought the machine when they were new to the market, so is a good 5 years old. It contains not only the boot drive but my documents, photos, websites, selected videos, all of which are backed up on the Time Capsule, and I was in the process of uploading to cloud backup as well (although not very far along, due to data cap and slow international upload speeds). I had no warning it was about to do this, but then I guess sometimes you don't!
Assuming I need to replace the drive, would it be worth replacing it with an OWC Mercury Electra 480GB SSD in an Icy Dock sled? Or would that be overkill for such an old machine? Would getting a standard 7200 WD Caviar HDD or similar give me enough of a speed boost? Obviously I am rather enamoured with the idea of a blazing fast SSD but I'd have to import it (not available locally) so I don't want to shell out all that money unless it's really going to make a massive difference.
Is there anything else I would need to know about using an SSD over a HDD? I assume I would fire it up the normal way - install it, boot from my Snow Leopard install disc (I downloaded Lion from the App Store) format it, clean install SL, then re-update to Lion, then restore my Time Machine backup? Am I likely to experience any weird issues due to it being an SSD? I see talk online of firmware problems and something called TRIM that I don't know anything about. If it's most likely that I can install it and rock on as normal, then I'm pretty keen, but if there's a reasonable probability of it being temperamental, I probably wouldn't be willing to deal with that (and therefore go the HDD route instead). Therefore I am very keen to hear people's opinions and experiences.
Sorry for the terribly long ramble. The more I have researched this, the more questions it raises! All advice gratefully accepted. Thanks!

more than likely it is your video card. If it is ATI 2600XT, tell it bye-bye. The card is barely used at all in TDM or Safe Boot Mode. The 2600 and Lion and the issues with that card, even if it seems okay, is not.
Depending on Windows OS as to how it mounts and sees your Lion HFSX (there is a nice HFSX driver from Paragon, and an NTFS driver for Lion too)
480GB SSD is overkill for any system unless you are pushing CS6 2-3GB images and then for scratch. All you need for a boot drive is about 100GB.
If you have an SSD now, then 1) you need to do a full image backup and restore (regularly as maintenance), and 2) TRIM Enabler
Save Lion and you can always do a clean Lion install w/o going back to SL - but you might want to keep SL (dual boot) and handy if you run into anything you still need that required PowerPC/Rosetta
FBDIMM RAM dies, Amazon has $32 kits of 4GB. And having all 8 DIMM slots filled improves things. If you need or want to and feel 16GB isn't overkill.
SSD and issues are always possible. you should not just go along. not without a clone image. And you should have another drive w/ TRIM Enabler so that you can do a repair and "trim" what is needed.
Clone a system with CCC regularly. Bootable. And can also be used by Setup Assistant.
Install Lion over a heavily used SL system and there are likely remnants of old things that get in the way and left in there and not removed.

  • My iMac just died so how do I sync with a new Mac?

I've just got a new iPhone 3GS and synced everything perfectly with my iMac BUT my iMac suddenly died and I am convinced it's my Logic board (seen it before). Now I cannot deauthorise my iPhone from this Mac. I have just bought a new iMac. Can anyone suggest how I get my contacts onto the new Mac.
I have several apps loaded on my iPhone by nothing I would miss but I am presuming I could reload them or would iTunes tell me I already have them? They were all freebies.
    Bongani

This is one of the reasons why maintaining a backup of all the important data available on your computer's hard drive is important, which should include your iTunes library, photos, documents, and contact info.
You can have up to 5 computers authorized with the same iTunes account. After you have reached 5 authorized computers if some of the previously authorized computers are no longer available or accessible in order to de-authorize the computer with your iTunes account, you can de-authorize all followed by re-authorizing the current computer to computers that you are currently accessing with your iTunes account.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
First you need to authorize your new Mac with your iTunes account with iTunes. With your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. This will include free 3rd party apps. If an app does not transfer, you can re-download an app with iTunes on your computer and you won't be charged again for a purchased app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the app that was used to purchase the app originally. You will be provided a warning message that the app was already downloaded with your iTunes account.
Before syncing contacts with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal, enter one contact in the Address Book and one calendar event in iCal on your new Mac. Make these up if needed which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.

  • I have a Mac book pro, 15" that I bought 4 years a go, the logic board has died, what recoarse do I have with Apple regarding a product that should last years

I have a 15" Macbook that I bought in late 2007, which is just 4 years old Since then the battery wont hold a descent charge, the screen had to be changed and now the logic board has died. plus there is an issue with the video card for that same model. I would expect a product that carries the Apple brand to last longer. They are not cheap to buy and its some thing that I cant afford to replace every few years. Does any body think that Apple has an obligation to do the right thing or am I expecting too much.

Four years is a pretty typical lifespan for a battery (and for a computer in general).

    You are expecting too much.

  • Fans are loud what should I replace them with and how?

Just like the subject says my fans on my power mac g5 seem to be a bit on the obnoxious loud side. Was this just with the early G5 models? Anyways I wanted to know if it would do me any good to by different fans for it. If so which fans do you recommend? How easy is it to to put onto the computer?
    -jim

I think pretty much all the fans are custom made for Apple, at least that's what they look like - not at all like the typical PC fans...
Which fans are loud? You could use Hardware Monitor to show how fast they spin - and compare to these numbers of other G5 owners. Which model do you have anyway?
(Check in /Applications/Utilities/System Profiler -> Hardware Overview)
And which graphics card is installed? Cause its fan might be loud (if it has one - the default cards usually don't) - it was in my case (currently Geforce 7800 GT) as well as with my earlier G5 (dual 2.0 GHz, 2003 model, with CTO Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB). The video card fan is replaceable if one has some experience. The rest of the G5's fans are more difficult. If a particular fan is bad, you might be able to get a replacement for it as a service part, from some mac dealer in your vicinity.
It may also help to carefully vacuum the huge heatsink on the G5 processors and air outlets in the back. The G5 must be off of course, and don't touch or even go close to the RAM or Mobo, as the vacuum machine might be electrostatically charged.

  • Content graphics tools are no longer available - why and what are you replacing them with

    help

    rzernitsky
If you tell us that you are "editing a photo" that would seem that you are in Photoshop Elements. We still do not know which version. So, I am assuming that you mean Photoshop Elements 12, the latest version. Premiere Elements is a video editor not a photo editor like Photoshop Elements so that is how I made that assumption.
You are in the wrong forum if you are asking a Photoshop Elements question. But, let us see if we can help before your thread gets transferred to Photoshop Elements Forum by a moderator.
From what you wrote "some of the graphics are no longer available". Which specific graphics are missing from the Photoshop Elements 12 CONTENT that you had before in another earlier version? Do you have that earlier version still either on or off your computer with Photoshop Elements 12?
If you are seeing "some graphics" and are in Photoshop Elements 12, then you are in the Expert workspace, not the Quick workspace. So that is good. From what you wrote before, it sounded like ALL the graphics were gone. Now you clarify and say "some".
Photoshop Elements has a large collection of Content with lots of categories and choices. So, please me specific in your answers so that we can help you. That Content does have a category named Graphics as well as a lot others.
I think that I can help you with this situation, but the details are extremely important.
Lots of words above, but we can narrow it down
    a. What version of Photoshop Elements are you editing your photo in?
    b. What version of Photoshop Elements did you have before that which had more Content (graphics)?
Looking forward to your help in working through this problem.
    Thank you.

  • Daed Graphics card - what model can I replace it with?

My Radeon 850XT died. I am having a lot of trouble finding out what I can replace it with, i.e. what's available and where to buy it.
    any recommendations please?

    Hi-
Bummer- that card is the most powerful card ever made available in an AGP G5.
If you stay with OEM cards, you are limited to a few, used or refurbs from highly priced Mac specialty stores.
eBay may be a better option for used. Many people go with flashed cards (PC cards converted to Mac ROM), simply because there are no real alternatives, other than high priced, or questionable used cards. Flashed cards are readily available on ebay, or, one may try to do it yourself, though the process is not a beginners endeavor. Flashed cards, with few exceptions, function as a real Mac card would, and are completely supported in the appropriate OS versions.
Your biggest problem, other than finding a card, is that almost all cards will be a step down from the 850.
There is one 8x AGP card, a flashed Geforce 7800 GS that will outperform the X850.
In order from powerful to weak, options are:
    Geforce 7800 GS (flashed)
    Radeon X850XT (used)
    Radeon X800XT (used)
Geforce 6800 Ultra (used or flashed)
Geforce 6800 GT (used or flashed)
Radeon 9800 XT (used or flashed)
    Radeon 9800 SE (used)
Radeon 9800 Pro (used or flashed)
    Radeon 9650 Pro (used)
Radeon 9600 Pro (used, flashed, or a new, PC and Mac version)
    Geforce 5200 (used or flashed)
    Some "retail" sources include:
    We Love Macs
    Mac Resource
    Mac-Pro

If you need ADC output, you are limited to used OEM cards.

  • Replacing vectors with better collection

    Hi,
My Netbeans IDE is giving me a hint that vectors (which I am using to build custom table models from AbstractTableModel) are obsolete.
What should I replace vectors with, or what collection should I use to build custom table models, any example will be appreciated.
    Thanks

    jverd wrote:
    Use ArrayList instead of Vector.
However, interaction with legacy GUI APIs is one commons place where you have to use Vector. I'm not sure if AbstractTableModel falls into that category, but you can find out easily enough.Unlike DefaultTableModel, AbstractTableModel makes no assumptions about how the data must be stored. That is why it is useful. It can be used to adapt other data structures to TableModel without the need to copy the data.

  • Replace Yosemite with Mavericks?

Yosemite is not good for my iMac mied 2011. Can I Replace Yosemite with Mavericks?

No. The only thing you can do is to erase the disk and then reinstall Mavericks.
You can only do that if you still have a copy of the Mavericks installer because it is no longer available from Apple.

My 24" iMac just died and will not power-up.  What can I do?

Bring it into an Apple Store for a free diagnosis and quote for cost of repair/replacement of parts.
If the costs are $500 or over, consider using the money toward a new or "newer" (used) Mac.

    Flyback Transformer
The dark screen and a zapping or crackling sound are classic symptoms of a blown transformer.
There is a test you can preform to see if it is the flyback transformer:
    1. Unplug the computer and remover the bottom cover of the iMac and disconnect the main video cable. That's the one held in by 2 screws.
    2. Try to startup the computer with the video cable disconnected.
    3. Listen carefully to the iMac. Does it sound like it is starting up? Do you heard the normal hard drive sounds? If so, then your flyback transformer is dead. If you don't hear the normal startup sounds and it shuts down right away, the the problem is something else. Like a bad power supply or something like that.
