My IMac is early 2008 running 10.8.5. can i update to 10.9.5  Colin A

Yes.
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Mountain Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or later installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
    OS X Mavericks- System Requirements

    Yes.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion

    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Do I need to reverse my thought on which to buy first?
I plan on keeping the iMac and PB until they cease to work ( have replaced HD's on both already).  I mostly use the PB-- lots of writing, surfing, email, etc.
    Your thoughts?

The minimum Mac specs (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) are :
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.2 or later recommended (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access
So you only need Leopard, not Snow Leopard

  • I am running 10.5.8 can I upgrade to Lion? if not how do upgrade to 10.6?

I am running 10.5.8 and want to install Lion how can I upgrade to 10.6 is this possible?
Or is upgrading to Lion impossible, I am new at this please help

First you need to check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Both Snow Leopard and Lion...
    Snow Leopard Specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
    Lion Specs:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
If it does... then you need to Purchase and Install Snow Leopard Disc,
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
And then Purchase and Install Lion...
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/
Would Also Recommend that you do a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive Before attempting any Major Upgrade...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
Also... For Lion... Check the Compatibility of Third Party Applications you may be using...

I cannot afford to buy nor do I need a faster and more powerful iMac. My G3 iPhone accidently went swimming the other day (and died) after I had already ordered a new iPhone 5 which hasn't arrived yet.
My bottom line question is ; Do I have to buy a new iMac to be able to use my new iPhone 5.    Thanks, Ted

  • I have an older Imac running 10.6.8 can I upgrade to Marverick 10.92?

I have a Imac running 10.6.8 and have ran the software update.  It comes back saying there is no new updates.  Is there a way to upgrade to Maverick 10.9.2 or at least 10.7?  I need to run at least 10.7 or later to run Lightroom 5.

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Mavericks. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • IMac G3 DV 400 running 9.2.2 can connect to router but not beyond

I've connected my iMac to an ethernet port on my router. I can browse from the to the router page. 192.168.0.1 .
My iMac is setup with the TCP/IP installed. The system profiler shows the default gateway, domain, and names server all point to the router.
What am I missing? I can't access ANY web page.
    John

169.254,xxx.yyy is the "self-assigned" IP address range. Your Mac gives itself that address when it powers up, then broadcasts a request for a new IP Address.
It appears your Router is not providing an IP address. This could indicate that dispensing IP Addresses is turned OFF in your Router, and no other Router is available to provide a sensible IP Address.
Check your Router configuration to make sure it will supply IP Addresses in the proper range using DHCP. It may also be called Network Address Translation NAT. The Router is supposed to give you IP Addresses that are strictly local (which 192.168 addresses and a few other ranges are) then act as your agent on the Internet, using its own IP Address (established either by the "magic numbers" and/or name&password supplied by your Internet Service Provider and entered into your Router, or by using DHCP to get an IP{ Address from another Router upstream.

  • Macbook running 10.4.11/ can I upgrade to Leopard?

My Macbook is running 10.4.11. I know, I know. You don't want to know what I'm running on my ibook.
Anyway, I would like to know if I my system requirements would enable me to upgrade?
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 1.83GHz
    Number of processors: 1
    total number of cores:  2
    L2 Cache (per processor) 2MB
    Memory : 512
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Thanks!

You can upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/  You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any third party Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/   I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.
You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 from the Apple Store as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
A retail 10.5 Leopard disk will run you around $200
To upgrade your iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.

  • Is my iMac OSX 10.5.8 obsolete?  I can't upgrade to Yosemite.

I'm advised that I require a compute with 10.6 or higher.

Get Snow Leopard first http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard then update it to 10.6.8 with Software Update. You'll then have access to the Mac App Store and can upgrade to Yosemite if your computer meets the minimum specs OS X Mavericks system requirements - Apple Support
If you can run Mavericks you can run Yosemite. Regardless of what Apple states you will need at least 4gb of ram and more is better.
Before you do anything make a complete backup in case either something goes wrong or things don't work as you expected.

  • I have older iMac.  No longer getting security updates.  Can't upgrade to Maverick.  Do I need anti-virus software?

Hi.  I am not very computer literate so bear with me.  I have an old iMac:
    iMac 8, 1
10.6.8, think I installed Snow Leopard
2.4 gz, Intel Cored 2 Duo
    1GB, 800 mhz ddr 2 sdram
I no longer get security updates from Apple.  Can't update to Maverick because I don't have enough memory.  Bought my Mac in part because of no need for antivirus software but have been told I need it now.  Is this true?  Do I just pick something to download or install?  Is there something appropriate at the Apple Store?

If you have an iMac model 8.1, you can upgrade as far as Mavericks if you upgrade your RAM. I have the same model, with RAM upgraded to 6 GB and Mavericks does fine.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install Mavericks, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

I kept a Snow Leopard partition for older games and so forth, but mainly use Mavericks.

  • Is anyone else having problems running out of RAM following an upgrade to Mavericks and Server v3?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks on my iMac which was also running Server v2.  Following the upgrade to Mavericks I upgraded to Server v3 and have been suffering from constant errors where the computer complains that I have run out of RAM and suspends all applications until I restart the computer.  I cannot work out how to turn off or delete the Server and therefore cannot isolate the problem to OS X or Server.
Is anybody else experiencing the problem?  I am quite happy to delete the server running on the iMac as I only installed for experimental purposes and only really use it as a caching server at the moment.
    Any help gratefully received.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

iMac early 2008 with OS X Lion 10.7.5 running slowly. How can I speed it up?

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
