Having a good backup strategy is the best way to prevent data loss.
see > http://www.macworld.com/article/1156643/how_i_back_up_frakes.html
That way if and when your internal hard disk ever does fail or you just what to upgrade your Mac to a larger hard drive, you have a good backup on a external hard drive to recover from.
Personally I use Carbon Copy Cloner and keep current bootable backups on several external hard drives. That way I can either boot up and run or restore from them in case something ever happens to my internal hard drive.

I had a repair done on my MacBook Pro and had to have a new hard drive installed. The Apple Auth Repair Shop then updated the OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5. Now my iPhoto v 9.2.3 will not open and it sounds like it will not work with this OS. Can you please advise?

You may need many other updates to retain compatibility with Lion. I suggest you reinstall Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you will need to erase the drive first. Be sure to backup your data if you haven't done so already.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • IMac 27'' mid 2011 hard disk failure with FileVault 2

    Hi,
Recently I had had some troubles with my iMac and everything is pointing out to the hard disk.
2 weeks ago I rebooted the iMac and i lost all my data because of a hard disk failure. The disk just got corrupted according to what i could see. From there, i had a lot of troubles trying to reinstall the last version of OS X (10.8). I indeed formated the disk and i even securely erased it. When I tried to reinstall it from external HD or from a USB key i usually (not always) got error in the final steps of installation. However, if i use the Recovery partition to install from Internet i ain't got no errors.
With OS X already installed, i also tried to encrypt the disk using FileVault 2 and i got an error again. This time, when 2 hours left to finish the encryption. Specifically this error: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4218952?start=0&tstart=0 (Trying to encrypt but it always fails). It seems to be a common error which a lot of people is suffering, but i still don't know if my case is a hardware problem or, on the other hand, a software error.
I carried the iMac to the tech support in my city and they discarded a hardware problem. They gave format to the disk and installed OS X with no problem, so they told me to check if the iMac keep spitting some error or just it has any anomalous behavior. Actually it seems to run fine, no errors yet excepting FileVault 2, which is generating the same error.
I have always used FileVault without any kind problem (in all my macs, including this one), so could it be a Mountain Lion issue?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "I/O error" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command.
Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.

  • Slow iMac from early 2009

I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help my early 2009 iMac: it seems to be really slow lately, especially when I use iPhoto '09 v8.1.2. Even loading things on Safari v7.1 seems to take longer than it used to. I have Mavericks OSX v10.9.5, I'm not sure it that is part of the problem or not. And now Yosemite OSX is out and I'm reluctant to install it while I'm having these issues already. Any advice?
    Thank you!
I saw on a different post that using etrecheck could be helpful, so here it is:

  • My iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) will not play DVDs.

My iMac (24-inch, Early 2009, purchased new from an Apple store) will not play DVDs.  When I attempted to open the DVD Player file in Utilities I got the following error message: ‘A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]’  I've downloaded nearly every software update that Apple has notified me has come available. It's been several years since I last used the CD/DVD player, but i was quite surprised and unhappy today when it spat out every DVD I inserted.  Anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

    Hi there,
Your machine should be supported, the requirements for Mountain Lion are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    You must also have:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Also, you might like to try unplugging any external drives, and backup ones, and try again.
    Nathan

First step would be to get rid of the numerous instances of AdWare on your computer.
Please review the options below to determine which method is best to remove the Adware installed on your computer.
    The Easy, safe, effective method:

I have an iMac 20 inch early 2009 software osx 10.8.1(12b19)...i am not able to use my internet, outlook, or any messenger. tried troubleshooting, reseting safari, disabling norton firewall, deleted intego...still no internet. i did delete intego without uninstalling so im wondering if that caused the problem. everytime i try to open safari it displays this: Safari can't open the page: "http://www.yahoo.com/". the error is: "the operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted" (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:1)

Like nearly all antivirus utilities for OS X, Norton a/k/a Symantec and Intego are worthless junk that will cripple your Mac. Remants of one or both are most likely preventing Safari from communicating.
Search the forums for techniques to eradicate them - simply disabling them or dragging their apps to the Trash is not likely to be sufficient. Start by reading this procedure from Symantec:
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH103489
    For Intego: http://support2.intego.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=214
... i did delete intego without uninstalling so im wondering if that caused the problem.
I believe you are correct. Download and run its uninstaller.

  • What are the detailed audio specs - Intel iMac 2.66ghz (early 2009)?

Hi, I am wondering what the detailed audio specs are for this system - Intel iMac 2.66ghz (early 2009).
The online description only provides the basics. I would like to know more, such as frequency response, sound to noise ratio, etc. Is this information available anywhere?
    Thank you.

Apple hasn't posted detailed release notes for the 2009 iMacs yet, but I doubt that the audio specs are any different from those in the 2008 iMac which can be found here.
    Regards.

    1. 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

  • Imac G3 ppc hard disk failure can't boot from cd

    Hi All,
My hard is disk making repetitive clicking noises and the machine won't boot up, I just get a grey screen and eventually a flashing folder/question mark. I did manage just once to start from the install CD,but Disk Utility couldn't see the internal HD so that was a dead end, can't repair what it can't see! and I haven't been able to start it since. Tried various key combos on start (safe mode, clearing PRAM) still nothing. Bit the bullet and took out the internal drive and put it back (nothing to lose, you never know? ).  As it seems the HD is beyond help and the fact that changing over the HD is reasonably straightforward physically, I am considering buying a replacement and doing it myself. Now I haven't done a repair like this before and wonder if when I power up with the new HD in place will I be able to boot from the original install disk ie. holding down "c" (which is not the case at the moment) and format and install the OS onto the new Hard Disk ?
I would rather spend a couple of quid and save the machine than have to spend hundreds on a new one.

I did try using my external USB connected CD reader/writer using the option key on start but couldn't get past the blue screen with the arrow and refresh icons.
The iMac G3 will not boot from a USB device.
Be careful when booting software that hasn't run on the machine before.  You need to have the lastest firmware on the machine when booting 10.2, 10.3, or 10.4 on the machine.  I
You could disassemble the external firewire drive & swap in a dvd drive.  I did this.  The dvd drive will not fit in the case, but who needs a case anyway.  Just use the electronic parts.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable anddifficult to fix.
    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine.  It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of MacOS.   It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chipon the logic board.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
    1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
    Apple -> Apple System Profiler
    2) Mac OS X, use the System Profiler.
    Apple -> About This Mac
click on the More Info... tab
    click on Hardware
    read the Boot ROM Version
    3) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down command+option+o+f
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to berunning 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers withlot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a localdrive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior tofollowing the update instructions."
You can download the Mac OS 9 updates from the Apple site.

New hard drive installed on my 2009 mac book. Can I reinstall pages, numbers, etc... from the App Store? I was running Lion.

    HI Corey ...
Yes. Make sure you use the same Apple ID.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
If you can't re dowload the apps, launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu bar top of your screen click Store > Authorize This Computer. Sign out of the iTunes store and try re downloading your apps from the App Store again.

  • New hard disk on old imac - best way to transfer back-up from Time Machine??

    Hello,
The hard disk on my 2008 iMac died and I just got my computer back from the repair guy, who installed a new hard disk (and the latest Yosemite).
Which is the best (and most fail-proof) way for me to transfer all the stuff from the old hard disk -  which is on my Time Machine – to the new one?
Before getting repaired, my iMac was running on Mavericks. My Internet access has also changed (it broke down the same week… ). Don't know it that makes a difference.

Connect your backup drive to the computer. Because you had Mavericks installed before you can only restore your Home folder from the backup. Use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder to transfer your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Upon completion you will have two user accounts. The one you are now using and the migrated one. Log out of the account you are using then log into the migrated account. Open Users & Groups preferences, click on the lock icon and enter your admin password for the migrated account. Select the account you were using and click on the Delete [-] button. Select the option to delete immediately.

  • How do I stop my imac OSX from automatically opening itunes 10 when a new device is attached via USB.

How do I stop my imac OSX from automatically opening itunes 10 when a new device is attached via USB? The devices do not pop up in itunes under a sync category, so I can't turn them off one by one, nor would I want to.
I apologize if this has been answered, but I couldn't find the solution for this problem.

Thanks for the reply but it didn't solve the problem unfortunately and I didn't think it would as I only downloaded Firefox for the first time a few days ago even though I have had this problem for over six months using IE.
Anything else that you think is worth a shot?

  • Migration Assistant- Recovering from a hard disk failure

    Was running on OS X 10.8.5 on MBP 8,3 (2011 17")
Many issues with slowness, and software, and then boom, the hard disk failed.
No software recovery worked.  Drive has been shipped for physical recovery.
I did not use migration assistant to set up the new hard disk.  Not going to live with migrated issues like the last 2 years….
I have a 3 month old backup that has most of my static data.  It's a bootable clone running on a Lacie Thunderbolt external.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Installed new SSD
    2. Formatted new SSD, installed Yosemite 10.10.1
    3. Did fresh installs of Adobe Creative Cloud Apps, Bought new Extensis Suitcase 6, reinstalled Office 2011
    4. Reset up the email boxes from scratch (some issues- so did not want to migrate)
    5. Imported HTML bookmarks from old Safari.
Now, I thought I would get the easy part…. run Migration assistant to selectively bring over about 500gb of desktop files, docs, photos and music.
It won't work. It forces me to create a new user on the machine.
How do I work around this to get the permissions changed and moved to the new machine/account?

I thought I would mention the issues with Third Party SSD and Yosemite:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2849366/mac-wont-boot-about-yosemite-and-your-th ird-party-ssd.html
Also to address some of your slowness and software issues in Yosemite that many people fail to read... Many of the Features require a newer MAC than the Hardware requirements to run the OS...
    Upgrade to OS X Yosemite.
Free on the Mac App Store.
    http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
    1. Check your Mac hardware.
These Mac models are compatible with OS X Yosemite:
        •    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
        •    MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
        •    MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
        •    MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
        •    Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
        •    Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
        •    Xserve (Early 2009)
    2. Check your version of OS X.
You can upgrade to OS X Yosemite from the following:
        •    OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6.8)
        •    OS X Lion (v10.7)
        •    OS X Mountain Lion (v10.8)
        •    OS X Mavericks (v10.9)
Now if you Notice the Check you Mac hardware shows older models than the Feature Requirements:
    3. Check Feature Requirements:
        Handoff and Instant Hotspot
        AirDrop
        AirPlay Mirroring
        Power Nap
Supported by the following Mac models:
⁃    MacBook Air (2012 or newer)
⁃    MacBook Pro (2012 or newer) <-- Yours is 2011
        ⁃    iMac (2012 or newer)
⁃    Mac mini (2012 or newer)
        ⁃    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    Just an FYI,
