  • IMac suddenly muted and won't un-mute!

My wife and I were working on our taxes last night and listening to iTunes when the music stopped. I assumed my lovely bride had accidentally hit the wrong key strokes, but now I'm thinking the iMac is acting like it has a virus.
There is a grayed, 2-inch square Volume window that is placing itself on top of all other windows, towards the bottom of the screen. Whenever I push the Volume Up button, the three "soundwaves" appear to the right of the speaker image, but only the first box of the volume intensity lights up momentarily, then immediately dims.
I then opened System Preference - Volume to see whether Mute was checked. Sure enough, it is checked but I can't uncheck it. It re-checks itself with 1/10 of a second. If I drag the volume slider, the same thing happens. 1/10 of a second later, the volume slider returns to no intensity and the Mute button re-checks itself.
I've restarted the computer twice, hoping it would flush out whatever bug entered the system, but no luck. I ran Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, which found and repaired something "unexpected," but that hasn't solved my problem.
    Any suggestions?
    Jason

    Thanks for the suggestion, Topher.
Unfortunately, however, it wouldn't boot up when I tried that. It made a slight grinding noise, as though it was trying to read something in the CD drive, went to a white screen, made the Boing sound it makes when it fires up (which means the muting is working then), turned slightly blue, then rebooted.
I may be off on the colors/order of the screens, but essentially it looped a reboot as long as I held those keys. It never reached the point when it would chime twice.

  • IMac's sound is muted?

The sound is permanently muted and greyed out. Even when I plug my headphones in there is no sound, but there IS a start up chime, and no red light is seen in the audio port. I have tried googling but have found no answers. Help?
It was bought in 2010 (if that helps, I don't know what operating system it is sorry)
Oh, I nearly forgot to mention, when I go to system preferences, there are no options for output or intput.

    Hello MissGiggles,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with audio from your iMac.  I would be concerned too if audio from my Mac was not working.  I found a couple of articles with steps you can try.
I recommend first resetting the PRAM on your computer:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
You can find the full article here:
    About NVRAM and PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I found another article that is applicable to the audio issue as well.  I recommend reviewing the steps in the following article (you can skip the steps you have already taken):

  • When I face time people on other end hear loud static and I am muted!  iMac

is anyone have trouble with static and muting when using imac? ipad works fine!  Help!

Thanks for the reply, that is unfortunate.  Seems like a design flaw to "pipe sounds" from the phone directly into the mic...

  • Lowering/muting startup chime volume on iMac 14,1 (Late 2013)?

    Hello everyone,
Has anyone had any luck lowering or muting the startup chime volume on the iMac 14,1? I'm aware that general threads exist for muting the startup chime volume but a lot of solutions only work on Macbook Pro's.
Here are the techniques that I've tried or aren't practical:
    - remembering to mute the volume before you shutdown
    - never turning the iMac off, leaving it in sleep mode
    - using StartNinja
    - using Psst
    - using the "Startup Sound" System Preferences pane.

I knew I had to deal with this answer (rkaufman's). But I suppose it's good that you posted this in case people who don't know any better want to mute their chime. You are absolutely right, which is why I'd prefer to simply lower the default volume of the chime rather than it being whatever the volume was right before one shuts down the computer.
One solution I've found is to leave Psst running in the background, which is a kludge but at least it works.

  • How do I start up iMac with volume muted?

I have a 21.5-inch, Late 2012, 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7, OS X 10.9.2 (13C64) and would like it to start up with the volume muted. I am NOT talking about the START-UP chime. I am talking about the Volume icon on the top of the screen showing no volume lines or Mute. Or System Preferences showing Mute. So, if I send an email there is no sound. If I play a song there is no sound. I want to have to turn on the volume to hear a sound after the computer starts.
Is there a way I can make the computer start up in this state without muting the computer after it starts?
I have tried going into System Preferences, Sound, Output and Sounds Effects, Mute. Not Muted on restart or logging out and back in.
Any suggestions. Terminal command? Or is this not possible?
    Aloha

I have muted it before shutting down and it starts up NOT muted. Doesn't work. Putting it to sleep could work except the USB ports stay active and that keeps other accessories active.
Surely there is a better way? Come on this is an Apple. There must be a way. :=)

  • Imac G5 isight sound problems.It's muted!!!

    Hello to everyone.
Since I installed Leopard I've been having an extremely annoying sound problem. It has happened 4 times so far. When I switched on my mac and tried to listen to some music, the sound was not working at all! I went to system preferences/hardware/sound and all the topics were grey! It was like I didn't have any sound! After repairing the permissions, verified disk and repaired disk with the Leopard DVD everything worked ok, but after a few days the same think happened again and again and again... Please help me because it's VEEEERYYYY annoying to waste my time with these thinks that were suppose to work in the first place.
    Thank you in advance.

  • My iMac recently started making random beeping noises. They are all different pitches and lengths. Nothing like a notification. Also does it with the sound muted. I've deleted Skype (several people recommended that) and restarted & shutdown. Please help!

This has been going on for a few months and seems to be getting worse. At times it will be frequent, other times only a few random beeps an hour. Seems to be worse when something is loading or "thinking". I have a video of the beeping sounds I will upload when I get home as it won't let me do it here at work. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, it is driving me crazy! I'm also worried it will crash on me.

    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • Strange sounds - mid 2010 iMac 27'' i7

    Hi all,
I have my new iMac for almost a month now and today I started hearing some strange sounds every 5 to 10 minutes. What I hear is something like a rat in the mac scratching its fingers on the aluminium:
chk---chk--chk-chk-chk-chk. It goes like this, one scratch - pause - second scratch - pause and finally four continuous scratches.
I have lowered the volume of the built-in mic and line in with no luck. When the sound is muted I don't get it so it's a sound coming from the speakers for sure.
    Any ideas?
    Regards

    Well,
kinda embarrassed but whatever, someone else might have the same issue.
I'm writing the cause to save him/her from formatting the computer, spend hours on the net searching for strange sounds on iMac, cursing apple etc...
    Office 2011.
    Outlook.
    Sound for "No new messages".
It repeats the sound for each single account.

  • Old Apple speakers (M2497) not working with 27" iMac

I have a much loved pair of old apple speakers, model M2497.
They worked fine with my older intel G5 tower, but won't do anything with my new 27" iMac. System prefs show the sound output device as being headphones (although the machine's built-in speakers aren't muted).
    Any suggestions?

You could try this and see if this solves your issue.

  • My IMac is working but the video is not. Anyone help?

No video on my iMac but sound ok etc.

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • Bad Sound in Windows 7 (32 bit) with bootcamp 3.1 on iMac 8,1

I have the following sound issues in windows 7:
I have a strange noise in the background of the sound. On low volume it is more notice able then on high volume. The noise seems to come from the left side only, when i mute the left side the sound seems to be ok.
When i mute the sound (both sides), there came still hearable output from my imac. It seems to come only or more from the right side.
The headphone jack is not working. The system detects the plug in of the headphone, but that's all. The sound come still from the internal speakers.
I try the following things to fix it:
I installed the newest realtek sound driver. It make no difference.
I deactivated wlan and bluetooth to check for interference and conflict problems. It had no effect.
I try different settings in realtek sound manager and windows sound mixer. The only setting that helped was muting the left side. Not really a solution...
    In snowleopard everything works fine.
    Perhaps anybody can help me.
And sorry for my bad english.
    Greetings
    Andreas

    Hello BennB,
    Have you checked compatibility?
    Just an FYI for you.
It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well as whether or not it will work with Windows 7.
Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibilty.)
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx
There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software".
There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/default.aspx
In any event a lot of the times, Vista drivers will work in lieu of Windows 7 drivers, however, it's not 100%!
As stated previously, it's best to have the Windows 7 certified drivers installed.
Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assitance and support.

  • Installing Windows 7 on IMAC 27 256G SSD 2 TB HD Core I7 8G Ram

I am a relative computer novice and purchased in Aug 2010 the lastest IMAC 27" with a 256G SSD and 2TB HD Core I7 withe 8G Ram. Here are my questions:
    1. I wish to install Windows 7 on the SSD using Bootcamp. I would then like a recommendation as to whether to install my other programs (MS Office 2010, Quicken, Norton360, et. al.) on either a) the SSD or b)the 2TB Hard Drive.
If I install Windows 7 on the SSD, then how would you recommend partitioning the SSD between OSX and Windows 7? Is there a way to put Windows 7 on the SSD and my other programs (MS Office 2010, Quicken, et. al.) on the 2TB HD?
I'm looking for guidance on the best way to set up this computer. I want the boot up speed of the SSD if possible. The majority of my work is on Windows 7. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

I just got everything working the last 2 days.
I gave it a try with the HDD still under GUID and had made one partition in HFS and one in Fat32.
And like a miracle everything went smooth,no problems at all with the Win7 install under Bootcamp!
So it looks like the new Imacs got a new motherboard and Win7 now installs without a problem though the second drive has GUID.
The only minor inconvenience I see is,that after booting in Win7 the speakers are muted, but one click to demute and everything works fine.MacOS starts with speakers on as usual.I read somewhere, that MacbookPro owners mentioned exactly the same problem and it is as yet unsolved.
As far as I can see there are two types of audio devices, one is Cirrus, the other WS-Audio.
I also sidestepped the bluetooth issues by using a usb keyboard and mouse from my Win PC.Only ejecting of the Win7 DVD didnt work ,but one boot in OSX took care of that too.
I am really happy with my first Mac and thanks again for your help

  • The mic is not working on skype, and its not muted

Every time my sister or myself go to use Skype on the IMac, the mic does not work, we can hear the person on the other end but they can not hear us, the mic is not muted, and when you go into the sound settings the mic is on the proper setting from what I can tell, and when I go into speech (under speech recognition) the microphone option for built-in microphone is grayed out. I don't what exactly this all means, but if someone else does, and can help me fix this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

I find it quite frankly perthetic that this issue still occurs and is simply ignored by Apple. You find this problem over and over, mic doesn't seem to work, but calibration does pick up sound, and there is no clear indication what is wrong, and what could possibly be done about it.
Like Dragonlover above, I have the same problem, and while looking through various Forums, I see that A LOT of other customers have the same issue. Help on this is virtually been zero from Apple. I now need to use an external mic which is just what I had in mind when I bot the Macbook Air...
Hope that the next 56 views will not just look and leave but post of they have the same problem, just to show how utterly sad it is that this is clearly a problem not just on the iMac, but on all Macbooks too. Sad Apple...just sad...

  • IMac won't recognize external microphone through 4-pin splitter

I recently purchased a Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 headset with separate audio output/input jacks, so I planned ahead and purchased a "splitter" adapter to get it to work with my Late 2012 27" iMac's 3.5mm combo jack. According to different accounts, it should have worked. But it doesn't.
With the splitter, the audio output works fine, but the microphone isn't appearing in the Sounds system preference pane (I tried my iPhone's Earpods and its microphone is recognized). I've tried all the usual suspects, resetting both the computer and the PRAM, and tried all the tricks that got it to work with other people- muting the mic, plugging in the inputs before plugging the splitter into my iMac, I even tried the MIDI setup and stared at it like a five year old.
Am I missing something? It seems to work for other people with the same headset and splitter. I'd like to exhaust all my options before forking over $40 for a Griffin iMic. Thanks.

Is yours a Rev. A or B iMac??
Not sure if this will work but try this, shut down and power down everything, detach all external peripherals you have (FW and USB, all the hubs, iPod etc etc) even the ethernet cable, pull out the main power cord too, let the iMac "rest" at least 15 mins, then attached back the main power cord.
Now plug in your FW drive and then start up the mac to see if your ext. HD mounts
    Cheers
