My iMac is not reading photo dvds

Hi:
I am relatively new to Apple so, forgive me if this an obvious question. I have several photo cds and dvds from various sources that are not being read by the iMac. When the disc is loaded into the iMac, I receive a message that I have inserted a blank disc. However, if I load the same disc in another computer the photo images appear. Help! Thanks in advance for any guidance.

If the CDs & DVDs system preference panel can't be changed
to allow these to do more for you, something else is required.
Could be the discs these image files are on were not formated
to an open standard the Mac can readily see; perhaps they are
of a type of format requiring a third party or other software to
open and use in the Mac. Odd that they'd be seen as blank.
There are freeware and shareware types of software available
for the Mac which may help; and then you'd have to choose
a software different than the native one selected as the OSX
default for those discs.
Are these photo discs ones with Kodak or other proprietary
data on them needed to see the stuff that's stored there?
This is a bit of a mystery to me. I have limited experience
with someone else's DVD photo media; I have two digital
cameras and almost no other images (from film) on disc.
And I have saved a few thousand images to CD-RW or
CD-R media, but have chosen a Mac + PC format to do it.
Maybe someone you know has a PC sitting around, between
crashes, that is hoping to save the day? Could be you need
to get some other software or maybe check the settings on
your CD & DVD system control preference, to see if there is
a built-in way to tell what is on those discs. If they are of a
proprietary format, the files could be converted and saved
again into a folder, then burned to another disc format.
Are there any identifiers on these non-readable in Mac image
discs? Sometimes, a brand such as Kodak can invite you to
search their site for free software players or editors which may
allow the user access into a proprietary format. I did that once.
{Hopefully someone who has solved this issue will see this.}
Good luck & happy computing!

  • My 24" imac will not read cd's, reads dvd's fine

My 24" imac will not read cd's, reads dvd's just fine.

    1) Make sure the CDs are clean and free from scratches.
    2) Go to: Apple > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs and make sure that blank CD: is set to Ask what to do and that music CD: is set to Open iTunes.

my up to date iMac can not read the lightroom 5 installation dvd I received for christmas, the dvd player works fine with other dvd's, is there a way to download the program with the dvd's serial number?

No need to worry about the disk version. You would just have to install an update anyway as soon as it was installed. Download from the link provided below and use the serial number you have to activate.

  • IMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also play fine in Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

iMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also plays fine on Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

  • HT2801 My DVD drive is not reading any DVD

My iMac's DVD drive is not reading any DVD. Whenever I am inserting any DVD, The DVD icon is not appearing and the DVD is ejected out after sometime. I have also tried the troubleshooting steps given in the apple support site by restting the SMC but my iMac still does not read any DVD. What do I do now? Somebody help me.

Could try purchasing a commercially available, retail dry brush CD/DVD lens cleaning system disc. These can sometimes revive a malfunctioning optical disc drive.

  • CD/DVD drive does not read all DVD formats and regions

    Hi
My Teac-dw-224e-a does not read all DVDs formats and regions.
It does read CDs but no DVDs at all.
Not DVD-R and not even regular DVDs. I have checked the region of the DVD.
I have reinstalled the driver and also tried with different software.
    What can I do?
    Please help!

    Hi
It is possible that your DVD drive has wrong region settings.
In this case it is not able to watch all possible DVD movies from different regions.
Of course you can change the settings 4 times. But after this changing the settings are fixed and its not possible to change it anymore.

" DVD RW Drive "  is not reading / writing DVD.
The same DVD can be read on my frnds laptop.
Corresponding drivers r up to date.. I even tried uninstall and then restart and then let my laptop install the required driver automatically. I've tried everything I could find on some forums.
I was told to delete " Upper & Lower filters ". I didnt find Lower filter so I had to delete only "Upper Filter".
    Plz assist me..
I will be waiting for ur kind reply.
    Thank u so much.

The upper and lower filter thing only applies if the drive is not showing up at all in the Device Manager. If it appears as a drive and will perform any function at all, then it is likely a hardware issue. One way you can be sure is to try to boot from a bootable DVD such as a Windows 7 install Disk. If the computer will not boot from such a disk then it is apparent the hardware is defective, not the Windows software because the problem exists even before Windows loads.
The drive has multiple lasers and it is possible for one to go out but not the others.  The drive is easily replaced. See below:
This eBay seller ships worldwide. You would have to transplant your plastic drive face but that is very easy to do:

  • Bootcamp trouble and iMac will not read DVD-R with Windows

    Hi,
I have a late 2011(or maybe early 2012) imac that came with OS X Lion but it's been upgraded to Mountain Lion.. I'd like to bootcamp it and install Windows 8.
I've been trying this for a long time now and then i discovered my imac was not bootable with a usb drive.. Bootcamp restarts and then there is a black which says 'bootable disk not found. insert and press any button' (something like that)... So... i dicided to try with a burned windows 8 dvd-r but when i burn an image to it in disk utility, it says 'medium write error' and the disk pops out... I already have all the windows drivers downloaded.... This is supposed to be a problem with the operating system... As you guys can see, i am having a lot of problems..
    Any solutions?
    Thanks in advance!

I tried using Finder to open files but as they are greyed out this would not work.
That sounds very strange - like it's a disk format issue.
What is the disk format of the Sony DVD+R you are using? (Do a 'Get Info' when the disc is mounted on your Desktop.)

  • IMac not reading CDs/DVDs

I'm on an older (late 2009) iMac, just installed Maverick a few days ago, but the problem preceeds this.  Basically, my computer will not read CDs or DVDs.  Any disc I put into the computer, I hear the whirring noise as if it's reading the disc, but it immediately winds down.  It will repeat trying to read the disc 2 or 3 more times, then just spit the disc out.
I tried spraying some compressed air into the slot, and it still won't read most CDs or DVDs, but now when I insert an MP3 CD that my boss had burned for me, the window pops up for when you insert a blank CD, so the drive is reading blank (or previously burned CDs AS blank), but not DVDs or normal CDs (for example, it spit out both a video game installation disc and a movie DVD).
I made sure that if i go to Finder > Preferences > General that "CDs, DVDs and iPods" is checked, and everything looks normal in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • My iMac will not play certain DVDs after upgrading to OS X Mavericks

I bought my iMac about 2 years ago, it worked fine, no problems until a few months ago, i upgraded to OS X Mavericks because it came up on app store updates and it was free so i upgraded. Ever since then it is very picky about which DVDs it plays, some it accepts straight away with no hassle, others it tries to read for a while until eventually ejecting. I have looked in other discussions but there isn't a solution that i've read that works. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I have just had the same problem with my iMac and after upgrading to Mavericks my iMac would not wake without pressing the power off button and re-booting.
Anyway, I have since done a complete new install on my iMac and have gone 5 days without an issue with the iMac not waking.  It was a bit of a pain to do but my own view so far is that the problem is linked to the upgrading of the OS instead of a clean install.
My iMac now flies with a new OS installed instead of an upgrade.
