I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

I downloaded OS X 10.6.5 in order to sync my new iphone 5 to my mac. After doing so the computer does not recognize the iphone. I switched the backup from iCloud to sync to the computer when plugged in but nothing happens.

If the Software Update application is not in your Applications folder, then apparently you've inadvertently done away with it. Downloading and installing the standalone Combo Update, as the previous poster has suggested, may install a new copy of it. If it doesn't, you can reinstall it from your original OS installer DVD using Pacifist:

I have a macbook pro. It is three years old. It has been working perfectly fine. However, as of yesterday, whenever I push the "on" button, the computer does not turn on. The little light comes on indicating that the computer has started, but there is nothing on the computer screen, and it does not make the usually noise that it makes when it cycles on.
Any suggestions?

Check the battery status to make sure it has a full charge (and that the charger is working). Then make sure the screen backlight is turned up.
If the backlight is up then, try forcing the machine to shutdown (hold the power button for 5 - 10 seconds). Then restart the computer(listen for the start up chime).
If the computer does start up and you still cannot see anything reset the PRAM by forcing the machine to shut down (hold power button as before), then press the power button and start holding the key combo
<Command>+<Option>+p+r
until you hear the start up chime two or three times, then release the keys and allow to boot

I have installed flash player 11 and checked it is installed on my compuer.
But if I try to play any media it says I need to install flash player.

I have tried uninstalling flash player and then trying again, restarting computer etc. But the computer will not play any media in IE.
If you go to the control panel the player is installed. But thigs like iplayer do not recognise it as being installed.

I tried to upgrade by browser as requested by Firefox but the upgrade does not seem to take, as I am asked to do this upgrade over and over.

For the past week, I get a request every day to upgrade my Firefox browser. I try to comply with this, but the next day I get the same request.

Because the policy changed earlier this year. However, you either got a rep who really wants an upgrade commission OR you went to a 3rd party reseller and they do not have the options to keep you on your same plan.
So questions:
What plan do you have? Full description from bill would be great.
What plan did they say you have to choose? (Share Everything?)
Does your son currently have unlimited data (That would have to go if getting a subsidized phone. No way around that unless ya pay full price)
What was the address of the store you went to?
Have you tried upgrading online to see if a change is required? (If you are required online, then it must occur for you to get what you want)

Connect to iTunes and try to reset it from there.

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via control centre : swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and it's the right-most of the 5 icons in the middle of it (if the icon is white then it's 'on', tap it to turn it grey and 'off'). Is the HDD in the 2009 15" MBP dead? (The original source of your data) If not, you might want ot take it out and put it in an enclosure.
You might try spotlight on know files to see if that gives you any clues where your data is located.
You might down load from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it. It should show you all of the files you have on your MBP and enable to locate them.
