My iMac is only 2 years old, but has stopped playing DVDs.  I upgraded to osx Lion.  Could that be the problem?

My Imac wont play store DVDs.  It will read files from a disc but not play movies.  It ejects the disc.  I recently upgraded to OSX Lion could that be an issue?

Reinstall Just OS X, clean and try different DVD's to confirm all don't work.
How to reinstall just OS X or erase/install OS X
I double Lion is the cause, likely a DVD region issue or a bad Lion install.

  • IMac 9.1 has stopped playing DVDs, ejects them after about ten seconds without reading them

This morning my iMac has stopped playing DVDs altogether. It had been struggling to play them before, but now it won't even read them.
I'm running a 9.1, so the warranty is well past due. Not sure if there's anything I can do at this point to fix it, tried to manually eject the SuperDrive in Applications (as per a troubleshooting method) but that doesn't work either. Anyone know a way to fix this?

I would start first with some basic resets, do a SMC AND PRAM reset first, do each 2-3 times and then test. If you don't know how please click  Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If those don't work then I suspect your SuperDrive is either dirty or worn out. You can go to your local office supply store and get a CD/DVD cleaning kit. If that fails then take the machine in for service.

  • My charger has stopped working, it is only a year old and has no frayed or exposed wires.

My charger is about a year old and has been working perfectly until today. It has no frayed parts or any wires exposed on it. i plugged it in and it wasn't charging and my battery icon on my monitor had an x on the inside of it and wouldn't charge. I tried again to charge it after it finally died and it didn't work, I used my mom's charger and it worked perfectly fine, so it isn't the batter that is having a problem. Has my charger just spontaneously stopped working or it is a common flaw that occours often with other users, and if so is there a soloution to fix it or get a discount on a new charger for what I am going to assume is a design flaw in the box on the charger because that is the only other thing I can think of that would be causing my charger any problems?

I had a lightbulb once. Brand new. Screwed it in its socket, lit it up. 20 minutes later it was dead. It's "brother" from the same twinpak is still shining bright almost 2 years later. Same thing here. The manufacturing process only guarantees that the mean time between failures is adequately long. But the individual units follow a probabilistic bell curve: sometimes you get one from one end and dies right off, most times you get one from the middle and lasts awhile, occasionally you get one from the other end and seems to last forever.
If you have AppleCare, it will be replaced for free. Else you will have to pay the $79 we all have. Of the 8 Mac portables I've owned, in only one did the power brick die on me. Replaced it at my cost, watched the Mac die a month later.

  • 1 year old macbook won't play DVDs

I paid the most I've ever for a computer for this macbook and it is by far the worst computer I've ever had. It began to malfunction shortly after I purchased it, but outside of the return date. I was simply told by apple that problems with a mac show up within the first few weeks and there's nothing I can do but continue to have it fixed. Why when I paid 1200 like everyone else must I constantly take my macbook in to have it fixed? Why can't I have a nice new computer like everyone else? But I digress. This is my first and last mac purchase, but I'm stuck with it until I can afford a new computer.
This is just one of several problems I've encountered. Roughly a week ago, my macbook stopped playing DVDs. Nothing unusual about the dvds, they are not burned dvds, just basic rented/purchased dvds. My firmware is up to date. Has anyone else had this problem? What have you done?
    Thanks.

You mention your firmware is up to date. I just want to comment, not directly to you but to everyone, that keeping software up to date is way over rated. If your software works when you get your computer it should continue to work exactly the same the entire life of the computer without any updates. The reason I mention this is in part because 'updates' can sometimes, for some situations, make things worse. For instance, I use Tiger 10.4.10 as 10.4.11 will not work with my router. It's just the way it is. An 'update' to 10.4.11 makes life bad for me. I am not saying to never apply updates, just saying to not get into the mindset that they are always good, let alone necessary.
Back to the topic at hand, in what way does your DVD player not work? Does nothing happen at all when a DVD is inserted? How do you get the DVD out once inserted? What happens if you boot up with the install DVD, will it work normally? Can you see any lose, foreign material in the CD/DVD slot upon careful inspection (this used to be a big issue with the iBook).
I am just trying to establish whether your problem is hardware or software. If software, it can be fixed for free. If hardware, well maybe, if it is as simple as foreign material getting in the way.
Do you have an external hard drive, or even another partition on your existing hard drive that you can install a new OS onto WITHOUT any updates, just the original install that came with the computer. Incidentally, an external hard drive which you use to back up the internal drive should be considered as the very first peripheral or accessory that you buy for a computer. Applecare comes second if you are a worrier (willing to pay money for piece of mind). I have never bought Applecare nor do I ever intend to. Consider the money that has been saved over the years! I know this goes against the advice of probably every 'guru' on this forum but it is still a valid opinion and one that I hold. It makes sense for some people to buy AppleCare but is foolish for others. Purchase of AppleCare should be considered as a calculated risk... "Insure that which you cannot afford to lose, not that which you can."--Bruce Williams, financial 'guru'.

  • Auto focus on my 2 year old T3i has stopped working, any suggestions.

auto focus has stopped working.  camera is almost 2 years old.  I can take pictures at normal distance but if I try to take a picture that requires zoom it will not work and all my pictures are fuzzy.

Check the lens and make sure the "AF/MF" switch is in the "AF" position (Auto-focus is on).
Do you own other lenses and does this happen with them?
Are other functions of the lens working?  e.g. if you change the f-stop does it affect the exposure (showing that the camera is communicating witht the lens to control the blades.)
Make sure the contacts on the body and lens are clean.  Clean them only with a non-abbrassive cloth (e.g. don't use a "pencil eraser" for example) because the gold plating on the contacts is thin and can be worn off if you use an abbrassive cleaner.
Eject the battery from the camera... wait several minutes, then re-insert (this basically "reboots" the firmware.  Turning off the power switch doesn't "technically" shut it down... it puts it into a kind of "sleep" state.  But removing the batteries, allowing any capacitors with stored power to self-discharge, then re-inserting the batteries will cause the camera to boot fresh and this will sometimes clear up problems.
It's also possible that there's a problem with the auto-focus mechanism in the lens itself and the lens would need service to repair it, but you may as well rule out other things before you resort to sending it in.

  • My ipad won't turn on . I've dropped it a few times, but there aren't any scratches or cracks. It needs to be updated though. Could that be the problem?

    Can someone please help me?

If it will not turn on at all, then it likely has indeed suffered internal physical damage from the drops.  You will have to take it to Apple and ask them to evaluate what is wrong (the diagnosis will be free).  If it will not power up at all, there is nothing you can do yourself.  Make a genius appointment and take it in to Apple.

Do you have OS x 10.8 Mountain Lion, any earlier OS such as Lion will NOT mirror.  It is not an update it is a purchase from the app store.
Third party apps such as airparrot or reflectorapp can help too.

OK, well I would go with what Apple says in writing but if you want to take a trip to visit the Genius Bar that won't hurt.
Good luck, I'm 99% certain  you will find I was correct but please let us know.

In addition to abrody's questions, have you downloaded non-Apple software that may be automatically loading, and perhaps not Lion-compatible? Go to System Preferences, users, and look at login items under your user ID.  This is easy to check ... do a safe boot by holding the shift key down when you boot. The boot itself may take longer than normal, but once the boot finishes, if the performance is what you'd consider normal, look to your login items. Also, while looking at System Preferences, look at any programs noted at the bottom of the window.

  • Why did my screen crack while charging? It hasn't been dropped, every time I charge it a new crack appears I'm tired of this it's only a year old!

Why did my screen crack while charging? It hasn't been dropped, every time I charge it a new crack appears I'm tired of this it's only a year old! If its not covered under warranty never again will I go apple I've had nothing but issues so far.

We can't answer that. Maybe the battery is bad and is swelling inside the phone. Maybe someone else dropped it and didn't tell you about it.
Make an appointment at the genius bar and see what they say.
If it's over a year old, then it's not covered under warranty.

My iMac 27" is 2 years old. The screen just start to sleep every 2-3 minutes and then one has to reboot it. I bought the unit from Incredible Connections in South Africa. They sent it to the South African distributors Core. They report LCD screen defect and charged me R7500-00 to replace the screen  and sent it back after 4 weeks.
It does not  go to sleep anymore; but when switch on; there appears a flickering band of lines on the screen which last for about 20 seconds before the machines starts to work normally.
It seems there is still a screen problem!
We had to send it back again.
The other problem is that you just get no communication out of the Core workshop and you cannot communicate with the technician.
They had still not provide a technical report in spite of repeated discussion with the manager of Incredible Connections.

Sounds like the graphics card might be the problem. Run the Hardware Test in extended mode. If you get an error it can be trusted, but getting a negative may not be all that meaningful.  Bring it back to them and let them check out the machine again.

  • My iPad is a few years old but my battery is running down very quickly even when not in use? I have about 16% usage still available !

My iPad is a few years old but the battery is running down very quickly, is there anything I can do ?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
