My iMac is prehistoric turtle slow.
Pretty basic problem here, my computer, specifically Safari, is running incredibly slow. Im currently on a wireless network. The router is in the next room about 10 feet away. Im on Cox's 20 meg plan. It's not a normal slowness either. It is a more unorganized slow. Often when I open a new page it will load the first image then completely stop. When I click stop and refresh the page loads almost immediately. Watching any sort of video is pretty much a dream at this point. Speedtest.net can't even start a test. Downloading pictures takes almost a minute every time. When downloading larger files, it starts around 50 kb/s and ends up around 2 kb/s or sometimes 0 kb/s in about 30 seconds. If I stop and resume the download it repeats the process. While my 3GS, in the same room on the same wireless network, breaks the internet sound barrier, my big, flat, expensive, aluminum, iMac puts along at a respectable 2 mph. I feel like it is trying to tell me something. At it's old home we shared all sorts of time together. It didn't care that the router was three rooms away. It only cared about impressing me with feats of imaginable strength. "Look at me, this is an HD video and you didn't even have to wait to watch it," it would say. Now it has decided that I don't need to watch videos of cats jumping into boxes and cartoons made in video games. I can't even preview songs on iTunes anymore. Now that daddy moved out, got a job, stuck it into an empty room with a crappy desk and no friends, my computer just enjoys watching me stare at blank screens and loading bars. I hope someone here can help. I'm going to try and hard wire it tonight. I don't think it will help. It should also be known that occasionally simple pages are loaded with a snap and the average page takes 5-10 seconds to load the text and background, although most pictures and videos are usually a no show. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks.
Wondering why my computer is acting like a teenage girl,
Logan
A couple thoughts.....first empty the safari cache from the safari menu, then clear your history. Second...reboot everything. Unplug your modem and router and the power them back up modem first then router. Finally make sure that your router firmware is up to date.

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Dec 5, 2014, 07:24:48 AM Self test - passedPlease describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup. -

I have noticed that my iMac 0SX is VERY SLOW. I would like to clean it up. I have been receiving pop-ups from TUNEUP MY MAC. They want $40 to supposedly clean up my computer and make it run smoother and quicker. Any reviews? Any suggestions?
DO NOT repeat DO NOT download or install any performance applicaiton's of any type. This is a scam and should be avoided. You haven't told us anything about your computer such as the version of OS X installed or how it's configured. I would recommend downloading and running an EtreCheck report so we can get a better idea about your system. You can find Etrecheck by clicking:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Run it's report then post it back to this forum. -
Imac 11,2 running slower after installing software updates
I purchased my imac 11,2 Sept. 2010. I recently downloaded my software updates that included airport utility, itunes and canon printer software update. Since these downloads, the imac has been very slow. Does anybody have any suggestions why my imac runs slower after software updates and what can be done to get my imac back to previous speed.
isis24680,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Did you run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions? Do you have your eMac in display-only sleep overnight, or use a utility such as OnyX, or otherwise ensure the Unix crom maintenenace scripts run? OS X 10.4.2 (in 7/05) included provision to force the maintenance scripts when sufficiently oberdue; it's possible you're seeing the Mac trying to catch up on a year-plus worth of maintenance.
Do you have anything showing in System Preferences> Others, especially anything that adds to the menu bar? You'll need to check that any add-on system utilities or background programs are updated to run properly under 10.4.6; a quick way to check is to Start Up in Safe Mode and see if performance returns to normal.
Open Applications> Utilities> Activity Monitor, show all tasks, and sort the list by CPU. Is their anything regularly showing up at more than say 15% of the CPU usage? -
IMac OS X performing slow/hangs
My iMac system is performing slower than expected and often hangs. I often wait up to a minute for the next action to happen, while the little cursor sits and spins. What to do? Frustrating.
System specs that seem pertinent:
4G memory (2 slots taken; 2 slots free)
storage report says 176G free out of 499G
OS X, 10.8.2
Thanks, Apple community. Most often this indicates you are running to many applications concurrently for the amount of physical RAM you have installed. It may also mean you have a crashed process:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
While Activity Monitor is open click on the System Memory tab in the bottom portion of the AM window. Use COMMAND-SHIFT-4, use the crosshairs to select this portion of the AM window, then use the Camera icon of this message composition window to post the image here. -
how can slow-motion iphone6 video be exported to imovie on an iMac and retain its slow motion effect ?
thx, i can't see where you do that (access the function to slow the motion of a clip). in the help file it says to 'right click' on the clip to access those functions but when i do i get these optios below (no motion, pan, zoom, pan and zoom). i want access the speed/duration sliders.
i would say the function isn't available at all, but i could be looking in the wrong place (although i have tried everything).
thx for your reply. -

Why has my iMac started to be slow logging on
Why has my iMac started to be slow when first logging on, is it anything to do with me upgrading to Mavericks from 10.7, and is there any way it can be rectified?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

My four year old iMac is running much slower than when it was new. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to "clean it up" and get it running like it used to?
What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
To find out info about your system,
Click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears.
Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.
Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.
Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply.
This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Locate your iMac's hard drive icon on the OS X desktop. Click the icon once, then use the keyboard key combination Command-I. This will give you additonal info about your iMac's internal hard drive.
Post this info in your reply here, also.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
Good Luck! -

IMac 27" running very slow after 10.6.6 update
After updating to the newest OSX build my iMac is running extremely slow. Boot times are the same but once I'm in OSX it takes twice as long to do anything. If I click on the systems icon it takes over 10 seconds to open. I attempted to verify my hard drive permissions and it shows an estimated time of over 4 hours. I'm at a lost as to what the **** happened. I've run several hardware diagnostics and it finds no problems. I also have boot camp installed and Windows 7 runs perfectly. Has anyone experienced something like this with the 10.6.6 build?
Hi e-nun
I feel your pain am having exactly the same problems. I have been doing a few processes to try and see what will work. Here is what i have done to start..
1. Boot the computer using the discs that came with the imac then load disk utility from that. Repair Disk Permissions.
2. Clear the PRAM and the NVRAM
3. Go to Spotlight preferences click on the Privacy Tab and drag your imac's HDD to that list. Wait for around 10-15secs then use the little minus button to remove it. Once you close the window Spotlight will start to re-index the HDD. You will notice the little dot inside the magnifying icon for spotlight.
As im writing this my Imac is currently re-indexing and fingers crossed its running better than after the update. Whilst its been reindexing i haven't had any slow down issues. Ill keep you posted...
