My imac is running slow how can i speed it up to where it was

my intel based imac is getting increasingly slower and that spinning color wheel shows up all the time when using the computer for just about anything.
additionally, i use mac's email program and its acting flaky, asking ror the password multiple times a week.

You're welcome, j. If not enough free space availabe is the issue, now is a good time to upgrade to a much larger HD, as prices have never been better. Clear, illustrated directions are available at ifixit.com, macsales.com, powerbookmedic.com, youtube and others. Macsales, amazon and newegg have a nice selection of HDs, while the latter two also have lots of user reviews.
Given that your MBP is 4-5 years old, and the average life-span of a HD is 3-5 years . . . .
Given that you have a 17" MBP, you can install any capacity HD currently available, just make sure it's 2.5", SATA, and 12.5mm high or less (there's at least one Seagate monster out there that's 14-15mm high). All other things being equal, a 5400RPM HD is going to use less battery power, run cooler, quieter, and with less vibration, and, of course, run a bit slower than a 7200. An SSD is also a possibility (a very expensive one), but you're not going to see anywhere near the speed bump as newer machines due to the SATA 1 (1.5Gbps) SATA/HD bus bottelneck.

  • Hi, I have a iMac Tiger running slowly, how can I make it run faster?

Hi, I have a iMac Tiger 10.4.11 running slowly, how can I make it run faster?

Look at what is happenning with your Mac when you run Activity Monitor.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
Click on the CPU tab on the lower half of the window to see how much time you are using.
Click on System Memory to get statistics on memory usage.  You should have some free memory.
When you have lots of page outs more memory will be helpful.  My entry for entry for Page ins/outs is:
    Page ins/outs: 29163/0
Notice I have 0 pageouts which says that I am not using my harddrive for extra memory space.  Thus, I have enough memory.
Activity Monitor has a neat feature where it can display a dynamic dock icon.  In Activity Monitor View > Dock icon > Show cpu history.

  • OS9 is running slow how do I speed it up?

I work in a school that has a bunch of old iMacs, you know the ones that were colored, anyway they run very.... slow. How can I speed them up?

    Hi, Gene -
There are a few thngs you can do. Assuming they are running OS 9 -
    1) Disable all unneeded extensions and control panels. You can do that in Extensions Manager control panel. Minimize the active ones as much as possible without curtailing any services you need. For example, if you do not need File Sharing, disable its associated control panel(s) and extensions. Ditto Web Sharing, Printer Sharing, and any others you can find.
At the bottom of the Extensions Manager window is a reveal triangle; if it is labelled "Show Item Information", click it - a new area will open at the bottom of that window. Then, whenever you click on the name of an item in EM's listings some info about that item will usually be displayed there - you can use that to help you decide if you need the item or not.
It's a good idea to track what ones you turn off - when you test and discover you lost some service (like ethernet) you need, you'll know what items to turn back on. You can use the "Save Set As Text" item in EM's File menu to generate a list of what's on and what's off - this can be a great help.
    2) If you have a lot of fonts installed, remove some, or even a lot. The more fonts in the Fonts folder, the more RAM (memory) the OS will need to use.
    3) Rebuild the desktop - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2344
    4) If the hard drive is not less than 85% full, find some stuff to archive off. Try to keep the hard drive well under 85% used.
    5) If you've placed an alias to the hard drive in the Apple menu, although it provides a convenient way to navigate the drive's contents via menus and submenus it can actually slow things down, particularly startup time.
Adding more RAM may make the machine run a bit better.
Setting Virtual Memory much higher than the default setting (done in the Memory control panel) can actually slow things down, especially if the drive is very full.

  • Imac is way too slow-how can i speed it up

I have been using my imac for over four years. Recently. it has really started to slow down.
How can i run a diagnostic test to know what the problem is?

Download, install and periodically run AppleJack[url]. This calls several unix routines including those which repair your directory and disk permissions, and cleans out extraneous cache and corrupted preference files.
Consider reapplying the current combo updater for your OS. For Mac OS X 10.4.11, the intel package is available [url=http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__Intel]here. You must use this larger Combo updater and not the smaller Delta one to impact this issue.
Consider reinstalling Safari 4.04 which is likely responsible for much of your perception that the machine is 'running slowly.'

  • My macbook is running slow, how can I clean it up?

Is there a way to clean up my mac so that it does not run slow.  Over the last few years I have noticed it loads slower and turns on slower.  Any suggestions on ways to clean up my system so it can run more efficient?

First, make sure you have adequate backups. If your hard disk is failing this could be a sign. They don't last forever.
Read: OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly
It is very cursory though. It is likely you have installed many programs over the years, some of which may not have been updated by their developers, or perhaps there are some you have simply forgotten about and should be update or removed.
If this is possible and you are interested in determining what you may have installed that could be contributing to this behaviour, read on:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply. Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

Follow this guide. There are numerous files scattered around that must be removed.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning
