My iMac isn't detecting my Airport Extreme

My Airport Extreme is working fine--it is showing a solid green light, but my computer is not detecting it. Any ideas?

I have been having fun and games trying to set up a dual-band Airport network with the old AEBS and the new AEBSn so know what frustrations you are going through. Some of the options that have helped me include:-
1. A quick reset y pulling the power cord from the AEBS waiting a few seconds then putting it back in helps - then click on the Airport scanning symbol on the top right menu bar, then Join Network, Show other networks and it often finds it.
2. If no go then reset the AEBS fully by putting in a paper clip to the small hole then plugging in the unit to the power and waiting about 15 seconds until it flashes. Then start again with the Airport setup.
Best of luck
Mike

Depends which iMac exactly and your network setup, you can go into System Preferences and under the Sharing pane you can enable internet sharing from ethernet (or whereever you get your internet from) to Wi-Fi.

Imac will not connect to Airport Extreme when configured WPA/WPA2
    Posted: Jul 5, 2007 8:22 PM Reply
I just got my Imac to connect to the internet using my Airport Extreme but only by using WEP. I had my Windows XP SP2 machines connecting using WPA/WPA2 with no problem. The Imac will not connect using anything other than WEP, and 1 of the XP machines will not connect using WEP.(I have not tried the other XP machines) I had to set the Airport Extreme for an open network in order to let both computers access the shared hard drive and access the internet.
I don't know what the problem might be and would appreciate any suggestions.
MacBookPro, Imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Fujitsu tablet PC, 2 XP desktops

hehe...on the visuals. I figured it out already, and I have the old airport card. However, I did a chat with Apple support and while we were chatting I found a USB adapter with MAC drivers which will work. It is:
Hawking Technology HWUG1A Wireless-G USB Adapter with Removable Antenna for Macintosh
    Manufacturer Part# HWUG1A
That is the only adapter that actually does WPA/WPA2 that I can find that is for a Mac and not just an older USB that only does WEP. It surprises me that Apple does not have a USB product like this. Anyway, for $56 including shipping, I will have it by Monday or Tuesday. Pretty cool.
Thank you so much for your assistance. It is appreciated.

  • 20-in Intel iMac (early 2006) Tiger -- configuring Airport Extreme Card

Hi -- I come from a mostly "not mac" background and am having difficulty diagnosing a slow internet connection -- and can't tell if I'm trying to use the right tool for the job. (I am using MAC OS X 10.4.11)
My home network uses a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and I've got 3 computers that connect using the router (including the iMac) -- the other two are Windows-based machines. We've got a 2-story house and I've been moving the router and computers around the house a bit trying to come up with the best configuration for a good wireless connection (I'm going to be ordering a supplemental antenna, but don't have it yet).
The two Windows machines (one using a relatively old PCI wireless card) get strong signals. I'm not even sure how strong a signal the iMac gets as I am not sure which utility allows me to see this. I do know that it has a painfully slow connection speed (at least web pages load at a crawl...).
    I've got an Airport Extreme Card (0x14E4, 0x89). Firmware: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.9).
I went to Apple's support downloads, and attempted to install firmware updates, but I am getting a message that indicates that these updates are not applicable to my card. I updated the Airport Utility software, but as far as I can tell that utility is looking for an Airport Extreme base that I don't have. Other than that I haven't seen any applicable information using that utility.
I was hoping to reach a configuration area that would allow me to specify 802.11b or g, and allow me to specify the channel -- but other than in the internet sharing section I don't see a place that allows me to do this. (I've currently got our home network on a 802.11g network on channel 8.) We're using WPA personal encryption -- which does appear to be recognized by the Airport Extreme card.
Am I missing something? I've got 3 "Airport" utilities but none of them seem to allow me to specifically configure the internal card. I've gone to "network" under System Preferences, and although I can see a "configure" button when I click on "Airport," it's pretty basic and doesn't allow me to set the channel or anything other than encryption & a password.
I would appreciate any help you can give me. Is this card so outdated that I should invest in a newer one? Am I limited by my outdated OS? (I hesistate to upgrade OS's when things are working -- in the Windows environment at least newer isn't always better...) Thanks. mcaren

Thank you Duane for your response.
I have only noticed a huge difference in the connection speeds of my iMac and our other computers in the last 6 mos. to a year. I did notice an improvement in speed when using a Rosewill USB wireless adapter -- I had a good wireless signal but would intermittently lose connectivity (and their user support was basically nil...).
I can't tell if I'm actually seeing an improvement in our other machines' connection (perhaps from the tweaking I'm able to do) or if in fact the iMac is slowing significantly. I think it's the latter. I've actually swapped out machines in the same position to see if location is at fault -- and I get no improvement in connection speed. I've had the iMac connected with ethernet to our router when possible because it has had such a slow wireless connection, but I needed to move the router recently and would like the iMac to stay in another room.
I've also read a lot about connection speed issues with Airport, but these reports are usually blamed on Leopard updates (there might be similar Tiger issues, but I don't read about them...).
Oh well. I'm hoping someone out there has some tricks up their sleeve as to how I can improve my wireless connection speed. Thanks for the help! mcaren

  • IMac on Netgear X104 and Airport Extreme intermittently loses IP address

We have a Netgear X104 plugged into an Airport Extreme Base Station.
Another X104 (which carries network information through the household electrical wiring) is plugged in for a networked iMac with OS X v 10.5.4.
The network works flawlessly, but every few days, the iMac loses its IP address. All lights are working properly on the X104, indicating that it is seeing the network.
The only workaround on the iMac is to go to: System Preferences/Network/Advanced and click RENEW DHCP LEASE. The iMac then gets reassigned a new IP, such as 10.0.0.200 by the Airport Extreme.
The Airport Extreme, settings are as follows.
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
    Wireless security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Connect using: Ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Address: Provided automatically
Powering off and on the Airport Extreme and the Cable Modem have not fixed this recurrent problem.

  • My iMac is working with my Airport Extreme, but Macbooks cannot connect.

After a number of power outages, we lost wireless throughout the house. ISP and modem all checked and okay. Reset Airport Extreme to factory settings. I am connected on my iMac (wirelessly via the Airport), but Macbooks and iPad cannot connect. They are picking up a wireless signal, but not the Airport network and shows an error message "not connecting to Internet".
    Suggestions?

A little more information from the Macbook - when I open System Preferences - Network, there is a message on the left showing the Airport device, and also says "self-assigned IP". On the right side under Status, it states"Airport has the self-assigned IP address of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Not sure if this provides any clues?

  • WHY is my iMac so SLOW with my Airport Extreme?!?!?

I have an iMac G5 and an Airport  Extreme base station.  I just opened Safari on the iMac and in the time it took for it to open the Apple home page I was able to go to my backpack, dig out my HP Netbook, turn it on, log in to Windows, open Safari, and navigate all the way to this page and start typing... and my iMac is STILL trying to load the Apple home page... WHY, APPLE? WHY?? I love my iMac, why won't it work with my Airport Extreme? Everything else I have works fine, in the same locations, and the iMac worked fine when I had a Belkin router... ever since I got this Airport Extreme the iMac has turned into a big white web-surfing glacier.  ...Whats's the deal?

    Hi,
If you have three or four bars of signal in from the airport it is probably related to the internet cache and not your Airport. But, I also noticed you are using Leopard (the Vista of OSX). Install Onyx and run Automation. Make sure you selct the internet cache in the settings window.
Upgrade to Snow Leopard. It is 30 bucks well spent. Leopard is a monster! Also, as much as I am a macaholic, Google Chrome is a much better browser than Safari.

  • Why cant my imac G5 connect to my Airport Extreme?

I have an "old" iMac G5 and an Airport Extreme base station from around about the same era (2005?) Anyway, Before I got the AX I had a Belkin router that supplied more then enough WiFi for my iMac, my Apple TV, iPhone and netbook all at the same time and I never had any connection issues, no skipping when streaming music or video, it all worked perfectly.  I Decided to go Apple all the way and "upgraded" to the Airport Extreme, but ever since then I haven't been able to maintain a good connection with the iMac... it slows way down, even loses connection altogether and then when I try to reconnect it struggles to even find the Airport signal, then when I tell it to connect I immediately get a "network timeout" error over and over again, and I can't connect.
I have inspected (and even replaced) the Airport card in the iMac, and it didn't help.  I've gone over my Airport Extreme settings and can't see the problem... Apple TV, iPhone, everything seems to be working just like before, except for the iMac...
    Any ideas??

The iMac G5 supports 802.11 g wifi, so it should work just fine with an airport extreme configured to support that mode. Have you moved any of the equipment around such that there is a larger distance between the iMac and the Extreme?  Is it possible to connect the iMac to the extreme via an ethernet cable?

  • Networking iMac, MBP and PC via Airport Extreme

I can't figure out how to add my kids PC to my home network. Apple makes everything so easy, so when we bought the MBP, it was a cinch to setup our home network. However, I can't figure out how to add a PC to the current network. I can connect to the network but I quickly lose my connection within a minute or two.
The signal strength says excellent on the PC's Linksys wireless adapter but the Airport software, installed on the PC, says that it can't find a signal.

airport base station "transmission power" is set at 100%.

I wish to be able to access the external HDD wirelessly via the PC.
Please review the following Apple Support article: AirPort: How to mount an AirPort Extreme USB hard disk volume in Mac OS X and Windows
The external HDD has 2 partitions, FAT32 and NTFS.
The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) will only "see" the FAT32 partition as it will not recognize partitions formatted for NTFS.

  • Airport Utility cannot detect my airport extreme base?

I just bought the airport extreme today, and the macbook earlier this week.
i'm struggling with it big time.
I tried rescanning a few times. the light on the base is solid green. (not right now obviously, i had to disconnect the ethernet cable in order to ask this question.)

I am seeing a lot of threads for this issue but no answers that seem to work.
I went on vacation at the beginning of November and brought my Airport Xpress with me so I could have wireless. I was able to set it up no problem. Upon returning this week (and after an update to OS X) I can no longer see the Airport Express or my main Airport Extreme (even though the lights are green) in Airport Utility. I have restarted everything multiple times and tried to connect from all three of my Mac computers, and nothing.
I am able to use the internet wirelessly through the Airport Extreme, but now can't reconnect my Express to my network so I can use airtunes or my printer.
Apple? Any answers other than to restart?

  • HT3500 I am trying to hook up my new Canon MG5320 printer wirelessly to my MacBookPro with OSX.8.2.  The Airport Extreme Base Station does not have a WPS button and so I seem to be stymied even though the printer detects the Airport Extreme.  Suggestions?

I am trying to set up my new Canon MG5320 printer to my wireless network.  However, there is no button on the Airport Extreme to push when I get to that step in the set-up directions.  I am using OSX.8.2.  Suggestions please!

If the display shows the "Press and hold the WPS button..." message on the MG display, press the red Stop button on the MG and then select Standard Setup. The MG will search for networks and should display your Airport Extreme's network name. Select this and then enter the password to connect to this network.

  • ? i mac and mac book to detect an airport extreme base station!!!!

    Help:
I am a new apple user. I just bought a mac book and iMac as well as the air port extreme base station (AEBS). I am presently using the AEBS w/my PC to get help.
I have tried to get both of my macs to scan, rescan to find the AEBS but they say one doesn't exist. I have restored the AEBS to its factory settings w/a hard reset an still no readings. Yes, the airport communication port is on.
It seems w/my PC it is plug and play something I would have expected w/apple, especially w/ their own products. My desk top and lap top PC's did not have any problem getting on line. I can only imagine if I did not have a PC to get on the internet I would be SOL.
Does anyone in cyberspace have any ideas what I need to do to get up and running? I hope I don't have some of the problem w/itunes as described in other communications. When I was hard wired via an ethernet connection to the macs all was well.
    thank you

"Yes, the airport communication port is on."
When you say that does that mean in network settings on the macbook and/or the iMac you have gone in and turned on each respective Airport? If so, does it not list any available networks in your area? If so, you need to tell it which to connect with.
Go to your System Preferences > Network > Airport and be sure that it is turned on.
While there you may wish to tick the "Show AirPort status in menu bar" box, makes it a little easier to know current status, and find networks.
If the AEBS is working at all, both macbook and iMac should have no problem finding it.
Once it does, you can use Airport Utility to configure as you wish.

  • My iMac isn't detecting the sound device

I've not had a single problem with my iMac since I purchased it... until now.  For some reason, my iMac is not longer detecting the audio device.  Several forums suggested plugging in a set of head phones for testing purposes.  I have done that, but still have no volume control.  The speaker in the top right corner is light gray, and when I try to do anything using the keyboard controls, I get a speaker with line through it.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

USB Backup drive connected to USB port on Airport Extreme. Running system 10.5.5
On my Macbook Pro, which I connect wirelessly, I was able to start Time Machine... Time Machine saw the backup drive and did a backup.. Yes it took a long time!! Anyway all is cool with that.
My iMac is connected to the Airport Extreme by Ethernet. On the iMac when I started Time Machine, it does not see the backup hard drive. I can see and share the hard drive... works fine. But no luck with TM seeing the hard drive on the iMac.
Questions is will Time Machine work with a computer that is connected to airport extreme by ethernet. If yes how o you set it up and what might be wrong??
yes, it should work. hard to say what's wrong. try the following terminal command. it should not be necessary but it should help.
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
One other important thing to mention. At first I plugged my new backup hard drive directly into the iMac with firewire 800. I started time machine and started the backup. I then stopped that backup and plugged the backup hard drive into the Airport extreme (USB port) I then trashed the partial backup folder off the backup hard drive. Is it possible that on the iMac there is still some TM file there pointing to the old original backup file??
have you emptied trash? you should. the files won't really be deleted till you do. there is one other hidden file but it should not be necessary to remove it.
    Thanks.... any help is appreciated.
