My iMAC keeps crashing

Hardware Overview:
  Model Name:          iMac
  Model Identifier:          iMac5,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
  Number Of Processors:          1
  Total Number Of Cores:          2
  L2 Cache:          4 MB
  Memory:          3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
  Bus Speed:          667 MHz
  Boot ROM Version:          IM51.0090.B09
  SMC Version (system):          1.9f4
Running OS X 10.6.8
processor: 2.16 Ghz intel core 2 duo
Hope this is not redundant, if so, I apologize. I keep crashing. It happens when I am on the internet (most often of Facebook games) I will click on something and get the "spinning color wheel of death" and have to shut down because I am frozen by using the power down button or (and this is new) I will be in a game, or on a website and click on something and instantly go to black screen. I am still running, but I have a black screen and have to force shutdown with the button on the back.
I haven't installed the latest set of updates. I have updated my flash.
I am experiencing screen tearing, mostly mild, but sometimes really scary.
I've spent the day reading and perhaps the answers were here- I simply can't find them.
I have repaired disc permissions several times. I am about to un install the OS and reinstall out of frustration, but not sure that is neccesary.
I have not upgraded to Lion. I do not think my machine could handle it.
I use MacKeeper and oddly enough I can trace the start of these problems to its installation. When I requested their "Geek on Demand" service all I got were instructions to check disc permissions and not a "actaul geek" who could take over my computer and diagnose and fix my computer like magic as advertised
That is all I can think of, except that I use Time Machine to back up several times a day to an external hard drive.
I did upgrade my memory a couple of years ago and my computer has a larger and newer harddrive installed.
Overall, my Mac is GREAT- I love it, I just feel like chucking it out the window...
Thanks for any help/advice!!

Get rid of Mac Keeper. Then backup your files  to an external drive.
Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
SuperDuper!
Synk Pro
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
Cool Drives
OWC
WiebeTech
Firewire Direct
California Drives
NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
Erase your drive and reinstall Snow Leopard:
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already.
Once you have Snow Leopard running you can restore your data from your backup.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

And what is wrong with Trend Micro Titanium as a package?
    1. This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack, and what you should and should not do to protect yourself from that threat. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The malware recognition database is automatically checked for updates once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
       3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
For the reasons given above, App Store products, and other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. OS X security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
    4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
    5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they're not absolute protection. The first and best line of defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you never use software that comes from an untrustworthy source, or that does something inherently untrustworthy. How do you know what is trustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
Pirated copies or "cracks" of commercial software, no matter where they come from, are unsafe.
Software of any kind downloaded from a BitTorrent or from a Usenet binary newsgroup is unsafe.
Software that purports to help you do something that's illegal or that infringes copyright, such as saving streamed audio or video for reuse without permission, is unsafe. All YouTube "downloaders" are in this category, though not all are necessarily harmful.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. If it comes from any other source, it's unsafe.
Even signed applications, no matter what the source, should not be trusted if they do something unexpected, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
    6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Follow the above guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself from malware.
    7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good, if they do any good at all. Any database of known threats is always going to be out of date. Most of the danger is from unknown threats. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free anti-virus products in the Mac App Store — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. Most of the real-world danger of malware attack comes from highly targeted "zero-day" exploits that are not yet recognized.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
    8. An anti-malware product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An anti-virus app is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
A Windows malware attachment in email is usually easy to recognize. The file name will often be targeted at people who aren't very bright; for example:
    ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!H0TBABEZ4U!!!!!!!.AVI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.exe
Anti-virus software may be able to tell you which particular virus or trojan it is, but do you care? In practice, there's seldom a reason to use the software unless a network administrator requires you to do it.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
    10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer is going to be infected every time you install an application, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you have the false idea that you will always be safe, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

I am compressing video files and simultaneously uploading videos to blip.tv and my imac keeps crashing on me. This happens about four times in six hours. Is it a memory issue? An error report comes up which I should have copied and pasted here but alas, I did not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thaqnks

Normally a good place to start troubleshooting is to remove the non-Apple stuff, following the developer's instructions (often there is an uninstaller package available).
If the problem goes away, and you need to run what you've removed, re-install one-at-a-time and test. If you do re-install, make sure you have the latest MLion compatible software.

  • IMac keeps crashing after 5 trips to "Genius" Bar...

I have had lots of issues with my 2011, iMac i7 computer over the past few months. I'm not sure what the issue but I'm thinking it's hardware based. I have AppleCare & have been calling Apple support and brought the computer into the Apple store for repair 5 times and they have not be able to reslove the issue. I'm about ready to give up on Apple all together.
    My issues:
iMac keeps crashing & restarting (even when I haven't thouched it or after its rebooted itself it will just crash again)
iMac will stop booting up all together
All of the windows & icons become jiggery (shacking but not like they should / happens with both 3rd party programs & Apple apps)
    What I've tried:
    Reinstalled OS X, a lot
Replaced the RAM & increased it
    Apple replaced the harddrive
Tried not loading one new program on the computer after reinstalling OS X
Here is the error report after the last crash:

Is anyone having the same issues or any idea on how I can fix this? If not, would anyone like to buy a iMa

    Both companies prices are competitive:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac
    http://www.crucial.com/
And perhaps worth adding that both offer a lifetime warranty on their RAM.

  • IMac keeps crashing... 10.9.2 problems?

My 2011 27" iMac running Mavericks 10.9.2 keeps crashing.  I've repaired disk permissions, swaped the RAM with the factory Apple RAM, unplugged all devices but the keyboard and I still get crashes.  Most often it crashes while surfing the web, but not exclusively.  I've played a game or two for an hour+ with no issues, let it sleep for 24 hours+,  and there have been times where it crashes every 30 min under *light* use, or even while rebooting from the previous crash.  This started roughly 2-3 weeks ago (at about the time I upgraded from 10.9.1 to 10.9.2 - coincidence?).
I did run the apple hardware test, and it came up with one error code:  4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1226 (or -1236).  A quick search suggests that code means the harddrive fan is malfunctioning/underperforming.  However, many users also reported that the replacing the hard drive fan didn't resolve whatever issues they were having.
I'd rather not spend $200+ fixing the harddrive if that's not really the issue.  And this wouldn't be the first time I've had kernel panics from a software bug.  Back in 2011 or early 2012 Apple replaced this machines CPU's *twice* because of a similar case of frequent kernel panics! It later turned out that it was a SOFTWARE bug with the airport card and the OS causing kernel panics.   ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/10546785#10546785 )
So I'm wondering if anybody has heard of any similar issues with 10.9.2?  Is it worth my time trying to reformat / restore from time machine? What would you do if you were in my shoes?
Attached below is the most recent kernel panic log, in case anybody speeks greek  :

Remove "Remote Buddy" or "Candelair" and see whether there's an improvement.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • My imac keeps crashing when trying to download logic pro from the app store

Hi guys i was hoping that you could shed some light on a few probs ive been having with the App store.
just tried to download logic pro on my imac which is running the latest version of mountain loin and it keeps crashing my mac out and restarting. im a little bit peeved as just spent over £100 on this programe.
    can anybody help

it keeps crashing my mac out and restarting
The Logic Pro app is crashing?
Try deleting the app using this free utility >  Uninstall your apps easily. MacUpdate.com
That will remove all the associated files not just the app itself.
    Then re download the app.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

  • Imac keep crashing and freezing up when I open browsers and program

Hi, I have some problems for my Imac. I don't know why when I open my browsers and some program keep crashing and freezing up.

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Mid 2010 iMac keeps crashing

Hello everyone, I'm having a very frustrating problem...my iMac keeps randomly crashing without warning. I installed SMARTReporter and it's not showing any errors. I installed Sophos antivirus to check and there's no problems there either. I verified my disk and repaired it. My friend thinks it may be Skype that's hanging up my computer. The only problem is I need to use Skype for work. This is my work computer and personal computer, so it's very important that I fix this problem! It doesn't have a lot of "mileage" on it either. There's plenty of memory left as well. The temperatures are in the right range too. Any ideas on what to try next? I'm not very technical savvy with computers so please be detailed lol.

Thank you for replying. I have one that has .panic at the end of it, is that helpful? If so here it is:

  • Help! my imac keeps crashing! im going crazy here!

    hi all
my imac ( iMac4,1 Intel Core Duo 2 GHz Memory: 1.5 GB ) keeps crashing and freezing. the machine is just shy of 4 years old (5 months out of warranty) at first it just started getting slow, then it started freezing whenever i closed or opened a window from the dock, now i cant even finish editing a single image without having to restart....
ive also started seeing some weird lines appear on the screen and once or twice the screen has gone completely nuts while using photoshop (lots of thin lines appearing EVERYWHERE) mostly the imac just freezes but now and then the screen 'whites out' and sometimes just goes black.
i have unplugged all the peripherals and changed all the power (ups, plugs etc) with no benefit. i sent it to a apple agent who took some cash and poked around (blamed everything but the mac) with no solutions.
please, all i want to know is whether the machine can be fixed or if i should toss it....
    help!

    Hello Peggy:
I will try to answer your questions, but, as a future suggestion, post your questions as a new thread. By "threadjacking," you confuse the original question and also limit the number of people who will read and try to help.
To run repair disk, you need to boot from something other than the disk being "repaired." In your case, it should be OK to run from the OS X 10.4 DVD.
I have one other question. Can you recover items you have emptied in the trash. Like your iphoto library?
Answer is - it depends. If the trash has not been emptied, you can drag the item out of the trash. If it has been emptied, it may or may not be gone. Emptying trash removes a pointer to the data, not the data itself (unless you do a secure empty). However, to recover something, you would need to use a third party utility (they can be expensive and there is no guarantee anything will be recovered). The "emptied" data remains on the HD. However, once HD space is free, OS X will use it (overwrite) as needed.

  • Imac keeps crashing in time machine backup after upgrade to mountain lion

2008 imac kept crashing (shutdown and restart) during first backup after upgraded to mountain lion. The backup size was about 10GB but time machine crashed after a while (at most 2GB) and never completed backup. So, I don't have any backup since right before I upgraded from Lion. Any suggestion?

Something strange happened. I was able to get time machine to work by going out to the login screen (the account kept logged in) and let it run the backup with the screen off (screen auto off after a few min). I tried it on two different external drives and that did the trick on both. Since the initial Mountain Lion backup was huge (155 GB), I was quite surprise that it worked at all. I assume your MBP was a Lion to ML. I also just did a 2012 MBP upgrade but that one was smoother. I did not recall having crashing issue. One thing I did find during this was that my WD passport USB drive was corrupted. Not sure it was the cause or not. I had to erase and reformat to get it back to work. Maybe do a verify disk to confirm. Good luck.
