My iMac (late 2010 model) desktop's hard drive is fried (was about 200GB). How much am I expecting to pay for a new one and retrieve my information?

As you can see Erin, trying to recover information from a hosed drive can be very expensive.
I would suggest first the OWC site as well. You can get a new drive of choice in size there.
I would also get the voyager  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/VOYQHDB1.0T/
and..
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Prosoft%20Engineering/DGDR3BUN/
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/TOOLKIT11/
Wth your lap top and these folllowing tools your are set to change out the drive, reload OS and then with
the voyager pop in the old iMac drive and with the Prosoft software, try to mount and recover the files. Data Rescue is very good at this " if " the drive is not totally mechanically hosed. Drive Genius is very good at a number of things too. Nothing replaces the old adage of Back Up Back up Back up.
The voyage I listed can become the new backup drive for you.. your choice of tools: Time Machine or by cloning via CarbonCopyCloner or by what I use SuperDuper! IF you want to be really kewl.. both. By that I mean cloning and Time Machine.
It will take you an hour to swap out the drive and spring clean the iMac.. there is a hundred how too,s on you tube.
Hope this helps. Remember if is always when a drive will fail..they all do. I tell the people I support that Harddrives are good for 15 min.. to when they don't work. They will all fail.
Apple Geniuses are very limited to what they can and will do as far as file recovery.
Your best bet is to try to do it your self first. There is lots of help out here and you are not the first.

  • How much should I expect to pay for a new hard drive for my macro with 250

How much should I expect to pay to replace damaged hard drive?

Nowadays a 3.5" SATA drive with 1 TB of storage space is under $70.00 depending upon cache size and spindle speed. Enterprise level drives will cost more since they come with a longer warranty and have a heavier use capability. These are desktop drives.
Your profile suggests you have a laptop model. Notebook sized drives are more expensive.
Look at OWC to find suitable replacement drives and prices dependent upon what you need. It's hard to provide you the correct information because you did not tell us what type of drive needs replacing.

  • How much am I expecting to pay for a new 200-500GB hard drive?

Is it possible for me to get it done under $500 (as in new hard drive and installation) as my other one is fried
I have rang Apple and told me this was the problem
Also if anyone knows how to retrieve all the photo's and documents as they haven't been backed-up please do so, it would save me a whole lot of trouble!

500 GB is pretty small by current standards.  A raw drive will be well under $100.
Installation on an iMac is a somewhat involved procedure.  It can be DIY, but it is very complicated and you need good instructions.  However, get some quotes from a computer repair shop.  I am guessing that the labor will also be under $100.  An Apple Store will want much more.
You might also consider using an external FW800 drive if the internal drive is really toast.  You can use a USB 2 drive but it will be pretty slow.
If the computer still boots and more or less runs, MAKE A CLONE NOW.  you can do this on a USB 2 drive of sufficient capacity.  I use CarbonCopyCloner.
You can then reformat the internal drive and clone it back to see if that has helped anything.
If the internal drive really is dead, then recovery of the data is possible but it will be expensive and it may not yield all, or any of, your data.

  • Macbook pro (2012) was swapped for a new one and my empty hard rive was swapped, but now my start up time has doubled?

I bought a Macbook 2 weeks ago, in the first week one of the keys broke off so I went to the Apple store and they replaced the whole thing for me. I was asked if I wanted to swap the hard drive for my old one and I said yes just to save myself time, even though my hardrive is completely empty- I havent downloaded any programs, saved any pictures etc.
Now my start up time on this new Macbook has pretty much doubled - its a blank lit-up screen for a long time before the apple and log in bar appears - has any one else had this problem? This didn't happen on my old one!

first - go to system preferences - startup disk and select your hard drive as the startup drive....restart your macbook....
if that doesn't do it, open disk utility and verify your disk permissions - repair them if errors are found....once the repair is done, restart your macbook...
see if the above sorts outs your issues....
    good luck

  • I have a whitemacbook 13-inch 2010 model.  The hard drive crashed right before my final was due. It was not Photoshop, although 2 GB was not near enough to run it, but a corrupted file on the hard drive. should i get a new hard drive, or a new computer?

I have a limited budget.  should I just replace the hard drive and get more RAM, and keep it going for
2-3 years?  (this was a suggestion from the tech guy at school) or go ahead and buy a mac mini to get me through school?  Or splurge and get a new iMac?  I dont want to invest too much too soon due to the law of obsoletion, and of course my limited finances.

Well as I suspected I love OWC company I pulled out the mac hard drive , they offered me a Macdrive  free trial program to check your drive on PC Windows and yesSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS it all there nothing lost
woohooooo , thank you but nothing is dead, when you have faith , this was a prayer answered big time I wanted a pro so much and I get to use my 500  plust 250 plus 120 GB drives all of them
ladies and gentlemen and I get to keep the 2 GB in from my macbook 13 inch and sell all the parts

thanks for the support, now the case is Solved. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hard drive crashed, data was recovered!  How do I recreate my iPhoto library?

My external hard drive crashed but all my data was recovered.  All the iPhoto library stuff is in a folder but I'm not sure if I should just copy it all into a new library...or what.  If not, how do I figure out which are the photo files and what is not needed.
    Thank you!

Drop the folder you recovered onto the iPhoto icon in the Dock.  If iPhoto opens and you see your library then you've dodged a bullet.  If iPhoto doesn't open then you'll have to start over with a new library.
Launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and select the option to create a new library.  Then open the recovered folder and drag the Masters folder (if there is one) or the Originals folder into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same events as your old one.

One thing to realize is that the "Webprocess" consuming mass qualities of CPU will come and go depending on the pages you are browsing. It shouldn't do that high CPU constantly only periodically. Some simple pages will take very little, very complex pages with lots of images and flash and ads and other misc stuff can make the CPU usage soar. But that's hard/impossible to predict, so just keep an eye on it and you'll get a feel for pages you might want to avoid and pages that are no big deal to process.
    good luck...

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook air 11.6' (late 2010 model) screen dims after few seconds and does not recover.

    Hi,
I am running win7 under bootcamp on a macbook air 11.6'' late 2010 model (1.4 dual core, 4Gb memory, 64Gb ssd). A few days ago the screen started to dim a few seconds after bootup. Even if I pres any of the keys it does not light up again. However, if I connect to an external display it works fine. I use it for work and often I am mobile so I really need the display to work. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

Found another forum with the same problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1560774, including another youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaGOKuwqsaw. The severity of the problem in this link looks worse than my problem. Mine is less severe than what's in this video, but more severe that what's in the first youtube link I provided.
The posts in that forum claim: 1) the problem began after upgrading to a newer OS, 2) it occurs after waking from sleep, and 3) that closing the lid for 10 seconds is a work-around fix.
Would be great if Apple fixes this. I won't buy another Mac, desktop or laptop, if they don't. Macs are too expensive to only get 2 years from, and in my opinion thay are not that much better than other options. I'm going to post a bug report on Apple's web site.

Yes, that model can be booted into Snow Leopard 10.6.3 or later. Use the discs that came with the computer to install a compatible version of OS X for the model.

You can try doing a SMC reset however I don't think that is the solution.
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-• Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

I'm doubtful it's a missing driver too, but I feel as though it's driver related. The first time XP was installed, after first boot without installing drivers, it was without sound etc, but fundamentally the system worked. Now after first boot, it's very buggy. Thanks for your suggestion Tonny. I ran the tool but it turns out the HDD is fine. Besides, everything runs fine in safe mode.
Does anyone know if (generally speaking) there is any firmware on the graphics card that would get updated via a Windows update? i.e. is it possible that Windows update downloaded a driver for the graphics card that installed new firmware that wasn't all that compatable with XP?
