My iMac literally will not turn on (brand new)

My brand new 27 inch iMac is not even a few weeks old. I've had in about 2 weeks I'd say. I had everything set up on it, it was completely up to date, plus I installed all new software on it, each only allowing 1 install (Final Cut, iwork, etc.)
It started turning itself off every now and then and I figured it was my family doing it thinking I wasn't using it because I always kept it on and let it go into sleep.
It was on earlier today. I hit the mouse to wake it up and realized it wasn't on so I tried to turn it on. Nothing. Held the button in. Nothing. Checked the cord several times, checked the wall outlet, tried different outlets, removed all accessories, I tried everything I could that I found in troubleshooters. Absolutely nothing.
Needless to say I'm incredibly angry. This is a brand new computer and it will no longer TURN ON. I only spent the last two weeks personalizing it with programs, apps, information, everything and now it won't turn on! Ya, I could put the hard drive in a different computer but thats not the point. This is not a problem I should be having and I find it outrageous that its happening. What's going on here and how do I fix it?

I'm having a very similar issue - not yet two week old iMac 27 shut off tonight and will not turn back on. I tried all the stuff found in the trouble shooting section (reset SMC, PRAM). Once, the fan powered up on high, but nothing else came on. Now I cannot get it to respond at all. I've checked the plugs, tried the power cord from my still working older iMac 20, but absolutely nothing. It shut off once as I was plugging in a powered 7 port USB hub, but I thought I may have bumped the power cord somehow and it shut down.
I restarted the computer, but couldn't find the items that were on the USB hub, a printer and external DVD drive, so tried the hub in a different USB port on the back of my Mac. As I plugged in the hub, the computer shut down, and I haven't been able to start it again. I had already used this hub on my iMac 27 - we moved the computer into another room and were putting everything back together.
Any ideas?

Try resetting the PRAM and the SMU
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    4. Release the power button.
    5. Attach the computers power cable.
    6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Can you see the iMac in Target Disk Mode?
Have you tried booting holding the Option key down? Can you boot from your install disc?

  • EXTREME PROBLEM: iMac G5 will not turn on

Yesterday night my second iMac G5 (3 or 4 years old) froze while I was using Google Maps. The screen was completely frozen, I could not move the mouse or anything. After a while the fans suddenly began going very fast and were louder than I had ever heard before. I waited a while and then shut down the computer using the power button and restarted. The light came on as usual, but there was no "on" chime and the screen remained dark. I could hear the fans going very quietly, but nothing else happened, so I again shut down, this time removing and reconnecting the power cable before restarting. Same result, nothing. Each time I shut down I did hear an odd click noise, which sounded like a heavy clock tick, and it scared me because it's similar to the sound a heard the last time I had a problem with this computer. It was 2 or 3 years ago, and for an unknown reason the computer would shut itself down and eventually did not turn on. I ended up losing the entire hard drive. The sound was not exactly the same -- last time it happened, there was a steady ticking accompanied by a series of beeps, but I thought I would mention it.
Unfortunately I have nothing backed up and I'm not crazy about losing another hard drive. I continued trying to shut down and restart last night. One of the other times I tried to restart, I was able to get the computer on, only after having left the cable out for over five hours. However, after signing in, the computer froze again, this time on the login screen, just after it had accepted my password. I had to shut it down again after that, and it hasn't turned on since. I left the cable out for seven hours overnight, but this morning I had the same result, the computer would not turn on. I'm very worried because of this computer's history that this could be a hard drive killer. I would very much appreciate any assistance before having to take it in to our Apple Store. The odd thing is that prior to the crash, I had not installed any new software or done anything out-of-the-ordinary, though I do think that the hard drive was getting a little full. The computer was in great shape though as far as I knew. Thank you for any help!!!

To start from the install disc, hold down the c key while booting. If that works, use Disk Utility:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If you can, then reboot from your internal drive and repair permissions.
I am also suspicious of the RAM, so would advise removing one stick at a time, and then alternating them to see if one of them is bad.
Also, find out how much free space you have on your hard drive, less that 10-15% will cause problems.

  • Dozens of drivers will not load on brand new HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO Notebook PC. Win 7 Ultimate N

I recenty paid for a brand new  HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO Notebook PC.It had entirely too much bloatware and I have doe fresh install's hundreds of times. The installs went fine but only 4 drivers from the driver page for this product on Win 7 will install. I am without the Wifi, Ethernet, Sound, Display, Smart Card Reader, and about 10 more that I am not sure what they are. I googled the PCI ID's of some and found what should be the driver as in the Wifi is the Broadcom driver from the support page for this product but after the install nothing happens. Then you get the pop up that says there was the program may not have installed correctly. If I point the device directly at the directory for any of these it says driver not found. I have never had such a time installing drivers for a supported OS. It came with Win 7 on it. I am just trying to perform a clean install. I will gladly provide the device ID's for anyone at HP that can give me a driver that will work. The ones on the appropriate page do not. I know I am missing the IDT sound driver, The realtek ethernet driver, I believe the ATI HD Video driver, and the Broadcom Wireless driver for starters but once again all version new and legacy on the drivers page DO NOT install.  Help. I am this close to calling HP and returning this thing. I only received it today and would have no qualms about sending it back.

Hi: This is a peer to peer forum.  No one on this forum is authorized to respond on behalf of HP to any posts made here. I looked at the support and driver page for the 14t-1000, and that model is 5 years old according to the release dates of drivers listed there. Ar you sure that is the model number? Can you please post the product number for the PC?  The product number can be found on the same sticker as the serial number. You can also post the top line of each hardware ID's for each device needing drivers. I'll see what I can find. The driver directly from Realtek should install the card reader (PCI Device).  You want the first driver on the list. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=15&PFid=25&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

  • Mavericks will not install on brand new Hard Drive

Trying to install Mavericks to a brand new internal 2TB Samsung SATA 3.0 HD on a 3-yr old 12 Core Mac Pro system that was running Mnt Lion just fine. After multiple failures upgrading the Mnt Lion disk to Mavericks. Decided to just use a brand spankin' new hard drive and do a clean install of Mavericks. Now during the install to the NEW DRIVE, getting error message "Mavericks cannot be installed." Then I reboot and try to force the continuation of the install, doing this repeatedly, and I sometimes get a error log instead of a just an error message. Error log says: Thread 34 Crashed:: Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.high-priority.  Then the 1st line listed under that is: 0 libsystem_platform.dylib  0x000000010fa5a06a _platform_memmove$VARIANT$Nehalem + 138. If anybody knows what any of that means?
    Thanks.

Without the full listing of the trace I can't be sure, however it would look more like a bonafide logic board or memory error rather than the HD that's causing  the problem. The low level drivers on Mavericks have obviously changed (otherwise it wouldn't be a different OS version) and possibly they're exposing a lack of performance in your memory. The actual Mavericks install may not be the problem, but rather being corrupted during installation. In the line you quoted, Nehalem is the Intel name for your CPU, the memmove operation failed (move blocks of memory contents from point A to point B) and they shared library containing this was in the system library....sort of critical stuff.
    You could try the following:
Re-seat the RAM and try again.
Try an old OS installation and see if it succeeds (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, etc)
Try an install to an external enclosure
If re-seating the RAM does the trick, then you're set.
If it doesn't, then install an older OS to see if they work OK. If older OSes work OK using the internal drive and you have after market memory in the system, it would imply to me that the memory probably isn't quite up to snuff and Mavericks is exposing it. If it's original memory then it should be OK.
If the older OSes now don't install correctly and it's giving similar problems try doing the install in an external enclosure. The point here being to try to move your data path off the internal SATA cable. If these install OK, try it with Mavericks. If any of these work it could be the SATA cable or I/O controllers on the logic board (SATA cable most likely).  A good reference for these sorts of problems is:
Bad Hard Drive Signs and Symptoms
Possibly a last option, which I would think (or hope) would be rare, would be that the binary for Mavericks install got corrupt during download. You could also try some of the resets they have in the linked document above. They might work and it doesn't take any effort.
    Good Luck

  • 24" iMac Screen will not turn on. HD runs though?

Has anyone else experienced this issue?
I'm running the latest OSX(leopard) and also have Windows XP (dual boot) installed.
Well seems like the iMac could not stand the stress of my gaming. I was playing HL2 and it just shut down. I had to get the applecare guys to come over and swap out the power supply. The slipped in a beefier one. It had more heat sinks and prongs sticking out of it(way better than the old one). Well, they fixed it and didn't need to swap out the Logic board since it turned on by just replacing the power supply.
Basically I'm using the computer, I'm not gaming or anything and out of no where the screen goes black. Power is good, HD is running, I can even hear my music still playing... Basically, It's as if someone pushed the power button on my LCD.
It came back on after a few bangs and then recently it went out again. Banging won't bring it back and I really don't want to break it. I don't want to have to call the applecare guys on this one hopefully someone out there knows an easy fix. Or maybe just like the power supply I should have switched the Logic board. Maybe it was different and updated as well.
    Thanks for all the help.

I am have experienced the same issue for the first time since I've installed the latest OSX(leopard) and ran the latest upgrade.
Basically I can use the computer remotely.
I have not call the applecare people yet.
Hopefully someone out there knows an easy fixl.

  • IPhone 5 will not connect to brand new MBA/iTunes. Error message is "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. Could not connect to the device."

    Hi!
I've had my iPhone 5 for just over a year now, and I haven't really had any problems since iOS7 was installed. I had a PC, with no connectivity problems between any of my Apple devices. Then FINALLY, I purchased my very first Macbook Air 13". I set it all up, updated all the apps, and made sure it was good to go. My iPhone was really low on battery one day, and I just happened to have my USB for it handy and thought I would just plug it into my computer to charge it. I figured I worry about syncing it later as I hadn't really had time to set it all up with iTunes on the new computer.
MY PHONE WENT CRAZY. It just started vibrating all over the table. Looking at the battery icon, it was flipping between charging and not charging, and occasionally the "do you trust this device" window would pop up on the screen, but it was still going crazy. iTunes opened up and these alerts saying "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. Could not connect to the device." and "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. This device is no longer connected." All it was doing at this point was using up even more battery. But then the iPhoto app opened by itself on my shiny new Macbook and the vibrating stopped. It was charging and syncing! But not having iPhotos before on a computer weirded me out i hadn't decided exactly what I wanted to do with it, I closed the app. The phone went nuts again. ***. On a different day, I was trying to sync it again, and it worked. But only long enough to back it up on the macbook. W.T.F.
Plugging into any PC is no problem at all. The phone just connects and starts charging.
I've tried just about everything. All of my software is up to date, both on the mac and iphone. The USB cord is fine. I've reset the macbook with it plugged in and not plugged in. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled iTunes with the phone plugged in and not plugged in. I've reset all the contents and settings on my iPhone, as well as did a hard reset with it plugged in and not plugged in. My iPad has no problem connecting and it also has iOS7. It's just so weird though, that it starts connecting/disconnecting interchangeably as soon as I plug it into the computer, even when all my apps are closed. All this is leading me to believe that it must be some sort of issue between the devices' communication to each other. But I'm not sure if it's an iPhone, MacBook, or iTunes issue!
    HHHHEEEEELLLLLLPPPPP!!!!!

I had this same problem with my new MBP 15", but only with the USB port on the left side. The USB port on the right side worked fine. Perhaps the ports on the left don't have enough signal energy for the iPhone.
Anyway, try using a different USB port, and if that doesn't work, perhaps you could try a powered USB hub.

  • 27" imac will not turn disply on after waking up from sleeping

I have 27" imac with 2nd monitor attached.  when in sleep mode the 2nd monitor will wake up but the imac itself will not turn the screen on. (what is funny is that i can log in but the only monitor i can actually see is my 2nd one.) i must play with the power button several times to either get the imac to reboot or to wake up.  any fix out there?

I have had this same problem with my mid 27inch mac 2011.  I recently yesterday took it to the genuis bar so they could try to give me a solution.  I showed the technicians many threads with my same problem and they acted as if I was crazy and the issue was absurd/ non valid.  This problem only started happening when I upgraded to lion.  I suppose to get the coputer back in a couple of days.  The onl god thing I had going was all the kernal panics that were listed because of the machine having to be restarted everytime.  I will provide any informatio they give me.

My wireless keyboard will not turn on despite new batteries.  It is about 8 years old. The contacts seem to be good.  What could be the problem?

    Hi elljohnson,
It is important when replacing discharged batteries in the Apple Wireless Keyboard to make sure the new batteries are oriented correctly. See this article for directions -

I suspect that the ones that say they will work with Windows 8 on the box.  If it does not say that, check the maunfacturer's website.  They eventually will have to give Windows 8 support for the new cards or loose out to the competitors cards.

  • HT4628 I did the security update on 4-2-13 and now my airport card will not turn on. OS 10.6.8 Intel imac 4,1 core duo. My macbook pro did not have this issue and wifi here is working on that. Is there a setting that was changed? Thank you!

Airport card will not turn on after security update yesterday. worked normally (for the download of the update) until then. Wifi here works fine with my Macbook Pro right now so the issue is with the card / computer / software not the provider. Did the update change something?

  • IMac Will Not Turn On (Even When Cool and SMC Reset)

    Hi all.
I have recently had a VERY ANNOYING problem with my iMac. It will not turn on. No matter what. I have reset the SMC (unplug, wait whatever, plug back in etc.) and have cooled it down with time and a battery fan held up to the case, but it still will not turn on.
I am really getting sick of this iMac and feel like sending it back, but I know that there is some sort of easy fix out there somewhere. I do not want to take it to the Apple Store again (2 times in the 5 days Ive had it already).
I read somewhere else that the older iMacs have stuffed up logic boards, which causes the computer's 'max operating temperature' to be much lower than usual, causing unnecessary 'overheating'. Is there some way to disable auto-shutdowns because of temperature, or raise the maximum allowed?
Please help, I just need to upgrade my Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 (from 10.6.3) to fix some software problems!
    Thank you so much!
    -Michael
    Oh yes, iMac stats:
    1.5GB of RAM
2.0GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    Early 2006 20" White iMac
Anything else you need to know about it, just ask!

Ok, the Snow Leopard disc did not have the AHT thingy on it, but the Tiger one did. Currently running extended test. Had to reset the SMC to get the thing to turn on. I will do the test twice, then reset the PRAM and give you the results.
I have come to a conclusion about one thing: Old iMacs are very fussy and take a lot of work to keep them going, but are very satisfying to use.
