My iMac Mac OS X v 10.7.4 won't recognize time capsule

I just bought a time capsule, my iMac can see it when I reset the settings on iMac and I can get through most of the stages to configuring it, but then at the end an unexpected error pops up and boots the time capsule set up out.
Once it gets booted out, my mac can't find it, unless i reset the time capsule again and the whole process starts over.
I made sure that my airport was up to date, it is. Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

I checked the pondini fixes and ended up doing the following - in case this could help someone else with an iMac, OSX Lion, and Time Capsule... http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
First, I downloaded and used Airport Utility 5.6 instead of 6.1 - BTW, I had to attempt download and installation THREE times before the program actually installed.  Be persistant.
Pondini #5: It's possible some names (of all things!) may be a problem.    See item C9.  I had to re-name my Mac, Time Capsule, network, etc... to remove all apostrophes and spaces.
Pondini #7:  If you have WD SmartWare installed on Lion, it's not compatible, per RoaringApps, and there are reports it can cause this problem as well.   Use Western Digital's uninstaller, or delete the app from /Applications and the files com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist and com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist from /Library/LaunchDaemons.   There may also be a file in Library/Application Support.
I then had to shut down computer, unplug Time Capsule, unplug modem; plug everything in again, then reboot computer; then had to go to Apple- System Preferences- Network- and reselect my Time Capsule to connect to WiFi again.
Then opened Time Machine preferences again and attempted back up - it worked!

  • If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

  • My Mac is out of space. Can I use the time capsule to files?

My Mac is out of space. Can we remove files from the MAc and store them on the time capsule?

Only if you are happy if they all get lost.. The TC is a backup device.. ie the target for backups,, it is not a NAS.. it has no way to back itself up automatically.. there is a manual full backup.
Plug an external drive into the Mac and use that.. or buy a real NAS.

  • HT1178 i can't connect the time capsule with my mac using the aiport utility. i want to use the time capsule to make backup for my mac book pro. the time capsule is giving a flashed amber light. please advice me

the time capsule is giving flashed amber light and i cant connect it to my mac book pro. i want to use it with the time machine to make backup for my mac. please advice me.

To do the setup, plug it in via ethernet.. do not try to setup over wireless.. Once it is setup you can plug the TC into the network and use wireless.
Most likely you will use the TC in bridge to an existing modem router.. but we cannot help as you have no details of the network setup.
I do recommend in the setup of the TC you use SMB type names.. that means, short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. as later Mac OS do have issues with long names, spaces and that apple shocker, the apostrophe.

  • There are multiple MAC's in my house and I am considering buying Time Capsule to use as a file sharing device. Is anyone doing this? Pros/Cons?

I have multiple MAC's in my house. I would like to create a file server environmet. I am considering using Time Capsule. Is anyone doing this? Pros/Cons?

The Linksys should be about as fast as the Time Capsule. So you might as well connect the Time Capsule to the Linksys, disable sharing and wireless.
Solution two is to use the TC as the router, wireless and network drive. This would save the power the Linksys needs. What is the Linksys connected to? a separate modem?

  • HT1338 HELP! iMac won't recognize time machine backup!

My hard drive failed in my iMac 2.8 Intel Core i5. Luckily, I had a time machine backup on a usb hard drive. Also luckily, there was a free replacement available for my iMac because the Seagate hard drive in my iMac was prone to failure. I brought it to the Apple Store for a replacement, which took about a week. When I got home to restore my system from the backup, it won't see the time machine backup. It sees the drive but no backup is selectable. I know it is there because I updated my System software to the latest Mountain Lion and you can see the files on the backup drive, with dates for the backups and everything. It won't allow me to restore in Migration assistant or Recovery Mode or anything.
    HELP!!

Most likely, some files were inadvertently excluded from your backups, and as a result you won't be able to restore your data in Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.
Starting from a fresh installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Follow the instructions on this page to associate your existing backups with the new installation.
You should now be able to enter Time Machine and restore your user data from a snapshot.* I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
    Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of your computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar

  • I have been given a second hand mac pro that does not have a wifi card in it. my router is down stairs so can not connect the mac pro direct into the router can i use my time capsule which uses wifi to my router to connect to the internet?

    I ha

If you have a non-Apple "main" router, then "join" would have been the only way it could connect.
Unfortunately, the Time Capsule does not provide any routing functions in this type of setup, so the Ethernet ports are not enabled in this setting.
If you have an Apple "main" router, it may be possible to enable the Ethernet ports in another type of setting. Then you could connect the old Mac to one of the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule for Internet access.

All Mac Pro's ever made have shipped with gigabit ethernet.  The last non-gigabit tower desktop Apple made was the very first generation PowerMac G4's back in 1999.
Similarly, all Time Capsules have been gigabit ethernet as well - never been one that was not.

  • Mac Pro files to new iMac via my Time Capsule

I've read a lot of post, but still am scared... In a nutshell I got my new iMac quad core. I have my intel Mac Pro and Macbook Pro both hooked up to my time capsule for internet and back-up. What are the safest/best steps for transfering my files from the Mac Pro to the iMac? Is it through using my Mac Pro, or using the Time Capsule? Also, once that is done do I just go into the time machine settings and delete the mac pro? Thanks.

It's probably easiest to use the migration assistant or manually transfer them between the two machines.

  • IMac Time Capsule OK, Macbook Air Time Capsule Very Slow, both 10.9.5

I am struggling for more than a week trying to find an answer, but failed, hope someone can help me out
It seems after I upgraded to 10.9.5, a message on my Macbook appeared that I believe advised me to do a new full back-up on my Time Capsule. I did, it was slow, few MB after 1 hour or so, so I cancelled it. Whatever I tried, it remains a problem, I am now backing up 180GB to a 2TB Time Capsule, and it is at 53GB after 10 hours, now running at about 1GB/3 hours. My iMac, also on 10.9.5, connected to the very same Time Capsule on the same network runs smoothly, backing up 850GB in 8 hours or so.
What I have done so far, that did not help:
    - Reformatted my Time Capsule completely,
    - Run Disk Utility on Macbook, Repair Disk permission, Repair Disk.
    - After Repair Disk Permissions it completes OK, but when I immediately run it again if finds the same problems, which it says have been corrected, see screenshot
    - Disconnected my iMac from the network, sticked the very same network cable in my MacBook, ran Time Machine again, no difference
    My set up:
    1x Macbook Air, mid 2002, 250GB of which 70GB free space, 10.9.5, no anti-virus, clean-up apps etc
    1x iMac, beginning 2009, 1TB of which 150GB free space, 10.9.5, no anti-virus, clean-up apps etc
1x Time Capsule 2TB, running latest firmware 7.6.4
All networked to the same network, no wireless connections
Prior to 10.9.5 I did not have this problem. I am pretty much lost. Anybody?

USB to ethernet has never been great.. although why it is worse with 10.9.5 is typical quality of apple upgrades these days.
7GB/hr sure aint fast.. it will go fairly slowly over the small files but should speed up on the larger ones.
I would take another step.. since you have come this far..
Check your wireless link speed. Depending on the age of the TC (yours in gen4) and the air.. you link speed should show 450mbps in the wifi on the mac.
    Check it now..
Transmit rate should show 450.. you might need to setup close to the TC to get it.
But I achieve that by setting different names for the two bands.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
By default my mac will choose 2.4ghz .. because it is based on the best signal not the best speed. On 2.4ghz it can achieve 217Mbps max. Usually it will drop to 130. So by using a different name I can force the connection to the highest speed.
As you can probably tell.. IMHO using auto for everything is a great way to get things to work.. but how well they work is optimised by a committee.
Setting all the factors myself I set what I want and produce a racehorse instead of a camel.
(It is a typical joke.. camel is a horse designed by a committee!!).

  • Migration Assistant won't recognize my Time Capsule's sparse-bundle so I can migrate to my new iMac

    Background.......
iMac (intel core duo) hard drive crashed while backing up to time capsule. Had Snow Leopard OS 10.6 (100% up-to-date)
    2.   Purchased new iMac with Lion. 100% updated.
    3. Want to migrate from Time Capsule to new iMac
    Problem.......
    4.  Migration Assistant does not see (recognize) my sparsebundle, message says it's "possible that it is in use."  But it's not of course.
    5.  If I mount the Time Capsule from the Finder, I can see the sparsebundle I want to migrate. So, it present but the Migration Assistant doesn't see it!
    6. Time Capsule recognizes the sparsebundle of my other Mac (#2) that backs up to the same Time Capsule
    Question.......
What do I have to do to get Migration Assistant to recognize my sparsebundle so I can migrate to my new iMac?
    Thanks

I finally solved the problem by disconnecting the Time Capsule ethernet cable from the internet.  Then the sparsebundle suddenly appeared.

  • Wireless between Mac Mini and Time Capsule occasionally goes out.

Is there a known issue with certain models of Mac mini's with wireless issues?
I have a Core 2 Duo Mac Mini (with OS X 10.6.6) with a Time Capsule (7.5.2) used as a wireless router. I also have an iMac, a MacBook, a Windows XP machine and 3 iPhones that connect to the Time Capsule. However, my issues only exists with the Mac Mini which sits about 10 feet away from the Time Capsule and is closer than any other computer.
In short, it appears that my Mac Mini intermittently does not connect to the internet. The wireless signal in the menu bar is fully black the whole time. I've tried connecting to a the regular wireless signal and the 5GHz signal. There is no pattern to the intermittence that I notice. I have a constant ping running on google.com as I'm typing this, and will ping successfully 70%-80% of the time and timeout the rest of the time, all while the wireless indicator in the menu bar is full. This issue has come and gone for about a year now. There will be weeks and sometimes months that the issue doesn't appear, and then sometimes it seems to happen several times a day. Sometimes a reboot seems to resolve the issue, sometimes not. It seems that when I'm not doing anything on the internet, the pings continue to respond successfully, but once I start to "surf" is when the connection will start to drop out again. For instance, if I start watching a YouTube video or stream an audio file, the signal drops out again for a while. Sometimes it will reconnect on its own, sometimes i have to turn the Wireless off and then back on to get it to reconnect. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Any ideas?

  • Hi I am trying to connect a new mac to an existing time capsule but Airport Utility is just not picking it up. What am I missing?

I have tried to connect the new mac to an existing time capsule both directly through ethernet and through wifi. Both times I get Internet connection OK but Airport Utility is stuck searching for the base station. I have two existing macs which are connected fine and have both been backing up quite happily. The first two macs are the same user (me) and the new one is for a different user in the house. All the macs are running Mavericks.
I have tried rebooting the time capsule and the new mac - didn't help.
Any information as to what I can try would be most welcome.
    Many thanks

    Hi All
I have solved my problem! It was the old chestnut the firewall issue. We have McAfee firewalls on our machines and the wifi network was set up as a public rather than a home network. I changed it to Home or Work and het presto the time capsule appeared. I didn't have this problem with the other machines at all.
    I hope this helps someone!!
