My iMac mini locks up (I get the whirling ball). Is there another way to unlock besides turning the computer off at the switch?

My Mac mini locks up (I get the whirling ball). Is there any way to reboot or get out of the lockup with out turning off the computer at the switch?

Nancy, I have the same problem.  To get out hold down command-option-esc to force quit.  My question is why is this happening and what can I do to stop it?  The application affected is Iphoto when I click on edit.
Imac 2.66GB Intel Core 2 Duo.  Just upgraded to 10.6.8, doesn't help.
