My iMac monitor just goes black

I have a 2009 27inch iMac with an external Samsung monitor.
Out of the blue, the iMAC MONITOR just goes black. Like it went to sleep or something.
This has happened 4 times in the last 2 weeks. (luckily I can restart the computer because the external Samsung still works.
I restart the computer and the monitor works fine again.
Help.
Thanks.

Hi.
Screen goes totally black.
The good news is, I read around and was advised to turn off the computer and unplug it, and plug it back in and start up. That seems to have fixed it. So far, so good.
Thanks.

Apple consider this product vintage so they won't perform any hardware service on it. You may have to look towards 3rd parties.

I'm working on a project and the program monitor keeps going black in Premiere Pro CC while I am working on the timeline. I've got like 28 GB of memory alocated to the program and just updated the latest driver for my video card. No clue why this keeps happening, but the only way I can get around it is to restart. When I go to close down the program freezes and I have to shut it down in the system preferences.
Under a crazy deadline if you can help? Thanks

here's my story. I'm also having this problem with video appearing in the Program monitor. The only thing I did differently is that yesterday when I was editing, I pulled the Program monitor out of the main Premiere interface and dragged it over to my second desktop monitor. that worked just dandy.
when I opened Premiere today, and opened an entierly different project, there was no video in the output window (and it was locked back into the main interface). I also can't select clips on the TL. The software locks up, and I have to restart.
I am able to create a new project and render the countdown leader. I was also able to import the project that wasn't displaying correctly, and have it work just like normal. So I think I'm back in business for now.
I'm deeply concerned though. I'm doing a webinar about Premiere very soon (with rehearsals tomorrow!). A failure like this looks bad for everybody. Also, I don't relish having to re-import all of my old projects in this way to get the basics working again. Any idea what went wrong? Right now I feel like I'd better never drag the program window to a second monitor to enjoy a larger program monitor while editing.

My laptop is still on; it just has a black screen that I can't get rid of without shutting down the computer by holding the power button.

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

    Eric Ross,
    Hi,
I did as You indicated and found on the top left hot corner was set to "put display to sleep" and the lower left hot corner was set to " disable screen saver", Both Right side upper and lower hot corners were not set (they had a -)
So, I adjusted the two "set" hot corners to - to match the other two. No incidents since of any display going black on a intermittent basis or at all, Thank You Very Much for Your Reply and Insight! Will post as "Correct Answer"

  • 20"iMac Display Suddenly Goes Black

While I am using my iMac, occasionally suddenly goes black. If I hit a key (usually the space bar), it comes back as if I had put it to sleep.
What is happening? What should be done? What can I do?
Thanks for your help and information.

What a way to be helpful! I went through your posts and searched "display" and I did not find this mysterious answer you talk about.
I'm having the same issues on my Intel Core 2 Duo 20" iMac. if ANYONE could post a solution, I'd appreciate it.
The computer is still working correctly. It is not on sleep mode. I've press the power button and it goes to sleep, but then when I wake it up it repeats the black screen a couple of times until it finally settles on letting me work.
What is the point of user support forum if there are no moderators around to help people out? :/

Have a 3 yr old iMac the screen goes black when using it it will come back on when you move the mouse  thanks for your help Dave

It's possible you've got a 'hot corner' set up. If you have and move the mouse to a certain corner of the screen it'll do as you describe. Have a look in System Preferences>Mission Control, bottom left of the window click on the 'Hot Corners' button and see if there is anything in there.

  • Imac screen keeps  going black sound present

Imac screen goes black can still hear sounds volume on but blank black screen
can anybody tell me why this happens?

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • HP LP2065 Monitor suddenly goes black for a second occasionally

    Hi all,
I have an HP LP2065 LCD monitor that I use with my 2 desktops  that dual boot with Windows 7 and Vista . Lately the monitor will suddenly go black for less than a second. This happens randomly and not all the time, and only a few times each day. I have made sure that the driver is up to date on both computers. I have tried to troubleshoot the issue, but, nothing out of the ordinary is found.
What would cause the monitor to suddenly go black?
Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello TinkRbelle,
I understand your monitor is going blank for a second or two at random intervals. As you have two operating systems getting the same issue I think we can rule out software. I would start by unplugging the power from the wall and from the monitor and holding the power button down on the monitor for 30 seconds or so. Plug it back in and see if the issue persists. If it does replace the power cord/adatper.

  • When selecting the camera on 3gs the screen just goes black i can still take a photo using the top volume button but not with the screen please help

    hello there
when selecting the camera on my 3gs the screen goes black and has no responce i can take a picture with the top volume button but cannot see it until i open photos
    please can anyone help
    thankyou andy

Try closing the Camera app completely and see if it works properly when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Camera app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Camera app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work also do a reset (unless this is what you mean by powering off and restarting) : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Screen just goes black

My wife uses the original iPad and she'll be reading an article, or looking at a website ... when all of a sudden ... the screen goes black!  Then, after a moment, the screen goes back to the home screen.  She tells me it doesn't happen when she is playing "Words With Friends".  What could be causing this, and how do we fix it?  She's got the latest version on iOS 5 installed.

What you are describing sounds to me like Safari is crashing on the iPad.
Try these steps and see if they help.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit Safari and restart the iPad.In order to quit or close apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • S2021A monitor just going red, green , blue on startup and not working

my monitor used to work fine one day it just turns red, blue, green ,white, black flashing continuous colors on start up and doesnt end up to anything, can anyone tell what the problem is ????

    Hello @saswotsharma,
I understand that your Compaq s2021a Monitor is cycled through various colors and is not doing anything else. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Change the cables connecting the monitor to the PC
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. • IMac G5 screen goes black and fan gets loud...?

    This has never happened before...
Randomly tonight while on my iMac the screen shut off. The computer was still running, but my screen was completely black like it was off, and the fan got really loud. I turned it off then back on each time it happened (3 times), and it would turn back on like nothings wrong but then after probably 30min. of using it... it would happen again.
Any idea what it could be? This had never happened before, and I couldn't find a whole lot on google.

"my problem might have to do with overheat and/or I might need to "vacuum" part of my mac. No idea how to do this and I'd like instructions on how."
Since the iSight cannot be taken apart unless you take it to an AASP, the only thing you can do is use a vacuum hose specifically one w/a brush on the end so as not to scuff up the plastic. Just run the hose over all the computer vents.
Make sure your computer is OFF when doing the above.
Also, when troubleshooting, disconnect all devices from your computer except for the keyboard & mouse.
Move the computer to a less dusty place and/or move it where the computer can get plenty of ventilation.
You mentioned that you read rockstar's post. Therefore, please advise all the troubleshooting suggestions that you have already tried. This will eliminate all the +"been there, done that"+ scenarios. Thank you.
