My iMac (or iPad, or iPhone or Macbook) won't communicate/find my printer.

The problem started when I changed my router.
The printer (Epson XP-405) says that WiFi connection is working and printer physically works as test page is printing.
I'm not very tech savvy, so detailed answers appreciated.
I have the IP address of the printer, the subnet mask and default gateway addresses (whatever these may mean - these are from the auto set up on the printer). I have removed the printer software and printer from the printer list and re-installed to no avail. I do not have a usb connector (this may be my next option). I have tried setting the printer up in System Preferences using the IP address and all 3 protocols to no avail. When I try to add the error message says 'Unable to connect to 'IP Address' due to an error. Would you still like to create the printer?'
I have ignored the error and created, but it doesn't work.
I have tried using ping command in terminal. These are the results .... I think it's telling me it's not reaching the printer - not sure why IP in brackets is slightly different number:
PING XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (XXX.XXX.X.Y): 56 data bytesRequest timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
Request timeout for icmp_seq 3
ping: sendto: No route to host
Request timeout for icmp_seq 4
ping: sendto: Host is down
Any help and advice would be much appreciated. I'm willing to give things a go but, as I say not very tech savvy

Changing the router changes everything about a network. The easiest solution will be to delete your existing printer from System Preferences > Print & Scan, and add it again. Better yet is to "reset the printing system" as described here: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
After you do that you will need to add the printer again according to the instructions here:
OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer
or, if applicable:
OS X Mountain Lion: Set up an IP printer
You will need to do that with each of your Macs.
Powering down your iOS devices and powering them up again should be sufficient for them to recognize the AirPrint printer, after cycling your router's power also. For AirPrint troubleshooting read "If you're unable to print" in this Apple Support document: About AirPrint - Apple Support

If your network configuration is:
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] AEBS > (wireless) > Macs, then
AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBS) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
Modem/Router Power ReCycling
- Power-off the Cable modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
- Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
- Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
- Power-on the computer(s)
Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBS.
- (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
Setup the AEBS
With the network components powered down, set up the AEBS, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, try these settings:
AirPort tab
- Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- Create a closed network (unchecked)
- Wireless Security: Not enabled
- Channel: Automatic
- Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
Internet tab
- Connect Using: Ethernet
- Configure: Using DHCP
- WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
Network tab
- Distribute IP addresses (checked)
- Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
AirPort tab (optional)
- Create a closed network (checked)
Change Wireless Security
- Wireless Security: WPA Personal
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
- Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
- Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
- Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)
Wireless Options
- Transmitter Power: 10%
Access Control tab (optional)
- + <add the computer(s) that will access this wireless network>

• Transfer iMovie from iMac to iPad or iPhone 4

Hi, i do have iMac, iPhone and iPad. I am using iPhone for about 6 months and iMac and iPad bought in last 3 weeks. My question is related to various applications on iMac like iMovie. Is it possible to transfer / use the iMovie on iMac to iPad or iPhone with out paying additional amount of money? If yes - how?
If no - why? I have paid for imovie while buying iMac so I should be free to use it on all my apple devices.
Thanks

The iMac runs on totally different operating system than the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. You could not use the Mac version of iMove on an iDevice so you would have to purchase the app for the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

• MacBook Air can't find my printer

Let me preface this by first stating that I am not technically savvy. Turning a computer on and off is about it for me. So I just purchased the HP 6835, took it out of the box and have been attempting to set it up. Everything appears to work fine by my Macbook Air can't find the printer. I've been trying to get this to find it for hours, reading almost everything. I then looked at the box it came in and it reads on the box that this Printer Supports OSX v10.9 Mavericks. My Macbook Air is running OSX Yosemite v10.10.3, is this why my Macbook can't locate the printer? If this is not the answer, any ideas would be great. Thanks, David

The printer shows up as its own wireless network in the list of networks
It shouldn't.

• I keep getting an error message when I try to sync my ipad or iphone to my iMac: "The iPad (or iPhone) cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-50)." What is this about? Thanks

I keep getting an error message when I try to sync my iPad or iPhone to my iMac, as follows: The iPad "_________" cannot be synced. An unknonw error occurred (-50). Does anyone know what this is about - thanks.

Error -50 is a very unhelpful generic communications error with a number of possible causes. Something between the drive to which you are downloading and the drive from which it is all coming is not working correctly, which probably leaves several hundred options.

• HT5622 We have 3 PCs, 2 iPads, 1 iPhone, a MacBook (and a partrige in a pear tree), how do set up 1 itunes library?

I have an individual appleID (2 PCs, 1 iPad, 1 iPhone), my son has an individual appleID (1 iPad, 1 MacBook), and my daughter has an individual appleID (1 iPad, 1 PC). I would like for us to have 1 itunes library that we sync to network attached storage device hosting the itunes library. I want each of us to access (sync) what we want from the same library. How do I set up itunes to be our media library?

I recently got a macbook and had to transfer all my files from my pc laptop. I don't remember the exact process, but I googled something along the lines of "transferring music from pc to mac" and found some helpful articles on setting up a network between the two computers. I don't know if this would work for the original poster as s/he probably can't get the two computers together, but I used an ethernet cable and turned off the wireless and somehow dragged the files over. It can definitely be done, it was a little time consuming but worth it!

• Two of my 7 calendars aren't syncing correctly via icloud from iMac to ipad and iphone. i cant find the problem. Help!

Two calendars in my list of seven are not correctly syncing between my iMac and my ipad & iPhone. Also, the two calendars appear in my iCloud list with alert symbols after the (triangle with exclamation mark) whereas others in list show a "broadcasting" symbol. I don't know how to find out what these alerts are.
I have noticed problems in syncing special recurring events....I.e I am able to set up a 'last Friday of each month" on my iMac, but it doesn't appear on my iPad or iPhone. And I note I can't set up a special recurring event on my iPad or iPhone. What can I do to solve this? Is this a known flaw in iCal?
Mary C

I have no idea if this will help as I sync via iTunes under OSX.6.8 - but there may be a clue somewhere here:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4981514
I have to say that, even after doing all that, my problem seems to recur at random with no obvious trigger - and it is even more bizarre because, like you, not all calendars or events are affected. Sometimes, different events within the same calendar are duplicated whereas others aren't!
And just how the iPad seems to pick up events which no longer appear in iCal is beyond me - presumably somewhere in a plist or old cache file but, as I said, no-one has any idea what or where!
No-one has managed to explian why my problem occurs or, indeed, just what is happening, but at least I now know how I can correct it, albeit via tedious series of steps.
I hope that helps?

• IMac to iPad to iPhone

Have a software idea but do not have any idea how to make it work. As I sit I front of my iMac I need to put some information on my iPad. But the only way to put the information on my iPad I have to copy it and then paste it in an email and then copy and paste to my iPad. There should be an app or something that you could transfer information just the same way you transfer app from page to page. Or be able to click send to iPad, or iPhone would be nice. Let me know if it already exist.

If your iPad and iPhone have iOS 7 which requires iTunes 11.1 to sync, then you'll have to upgrade your iMac to Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later. iTunes 11.1 won't run on Mac OS X 10.5.8. Assuming your iMac can run Mac OS X 10.6:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4949
then you can purchase a retail copy of the 10.6 installer from the Apple Store for US $19.95. Once you upgrade your iMac to that version of OS X, you'll be able to install iTunes 11.1.
Regards.

• Notes won't sync from either iPad or iPhone to Macbook Air

So here is my problem. I have a yahoo account that allows my notes to go between my iPad and iPhone no problem, email works great too. BUT my notes won't sync up to my macbook, I've tried creating a new email account but every time I select the "notes" box I get the same error...
IF the stupid error is unknown then is there anyone out there that can tell me the mysteries of this magical unknown error so I can access my notes on my computer..please help. The account is a pop account, does that matter, should it be changed to imap? There are heaps of discussions about this and most of them are rabbit trails.

Which Mac OS and which iOS are you using? Are you having trouble with USB sync or wifi sync or both?

• New ipad and iPhone 4 calendars won't sync tried everything on here still won't do it, help!

Ipad and iPhone will not sync, I have tried all the suggestions on here but nothing seems to work, any other ideas appreciated!

I have the same issues... iPhone and MBP have all the latest updates, etc. iCal synching used to work, but stopped at some point in January. I have tried all suggestions mentioned in these forums, including merging a new account...
I am stunned that Apple can't get this right.
The closest I've gotten to making this work is a dialog box popping up during synching warning of major changes to iCal; I say ok, but nothing is importing.

• HT2495 I have a wirless network. I connect all my computers to it and a printer. I can print wirelessly from all computers. I tried to add the printer to my new Macbook, but can't find the printer on the add printer and scan icon on preferences.

I have a wirless network. I connect all my computers to it and a printer. I can print wirelessly from all computers. I tried to add the printer to my new Macbook, which is connecte to the network, but can't find the printer on the add printer and scan icon on preferences. I downloaded a installation printer utility from the Manufacturer (lexmark), but it didn't work. Any sugestions?
Thanks,
Ivette

You would need to get the IP address of your printer then manually add a network print queue.
To get the IP address, on the control panel of your printer, press on Setup > Network Setup > TCP/IP > View/Set IP address.

• Synch from itunes on iMac to Ipad and iPhone

I've eventually decided to upgrade, my iPad (7.0.4) and iPhone (7.0.4).
I lost loads of data and iTunes backups corrput (so Apple says), so iPad had to rebuilt as if new.
So am woeking through everything to re-establish to as it was before.
I AM LOOSING THE WILL TO LIVE.
iTunes...I had NO music data at all on Pad or Phone.
On my iMac, in iTunes 11.1.4 created 2 playlists and synched them to my Pad and Phone, ONLY 2 playlists. NOTHING ELSE WAS CHECKED, I TRIPLE CHECKED.
Success - got 2 playlists on Pad and Phone.
BUT BUT BUT
Noticed loads of other tracks, 196 of them.
Could not work out where they'd come from, then realised "Ah they're in Purchased folder on iTunes".
BUT I DID NOT ASK FOR THESE 2 B SYNCHED. NO WAY.
So i removed everything in iTunes, in Pruchased folder.
I tried to synch again, choosing nothing, i.e. no songs, in the hope these would be removed.
NO.
So I have a Pad and Phone with 196 purchased songs and I cannot get rid of them.
GOING MAD!!!!! HELP PLEASE. I moved from Windows to avoid this rubbish.....

I had a similar problem (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24525903#24525903)
The solution in my case was to start iPhoto and let it update the library, even thu itunes was set up to sync with Aperture.

• ITunes crashes when trying to sync iPad and iPhone to Macbook Air

I would like to back up iPhone and iPad. Every time I connect either device to my Macbook Air, iTunes crashes and I have to force quit.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

• Sync ipad 2, iphone and macbook pro after downloading Lion

I downloaded Lion and I was hoping that my Ipad 2 and Iphone 4 would sync with my Ical and photo's but it is not doing that. Is there a setting I need to adjust?

Have you also enabled calendar syncing and photo stream from settings > iCloud on the iOS devices and system preferences > iCloud on your Mac. Have you also downloaded and installed the iPhoto update for photo stream.
Is it only calendar syncing and photostream that doesn't work.
