My imac recently started freezing

Ok so today my iMac froze on me while I was playing Minecraft and I couldn't control anything what so ever so I did a hard shutdown no big deal computers crash once in a blue moon right?  Just 30min. Later it happened again.  And then again. My computer is clean and usually pretty quick.  I play Minecraft and run my server often enough to know something is wrong because I don't usually have problems with this.  The problem started today so it had to be something I did.
I have got this information:
I installed an update from the Mac AppStore I think it said something about camera RAW and a java update (Minecraft is java based)
I also installed a Minecraft update
Finally a Minecraft server update
I think I might know what the problem is, it might be the java but I don't know at all.  I have checked activity monitor to see how much memory out of 4g I am using.  I usually have 200-700 mb free when I have Minecraft, Minecraft Server, and FaceTime running.  Have not been on computer long enough to notice if it freezes on other things besides minecraft I just spent most time doing that today.
If anybody has any ideas or fixes I would appreciate your input.

sorry  i found one from october 26th it was just farther down the list.

Why would my iMac (less than one year old) suddenly start freezing?  This is the 3rd time in a week.  Thanks for any help.

  • I have a Macbook Pro Early 2011, with 10.7.5 that recently started freezing.

I have run disk verification and repair.  I have tried resetting the SMS with that- hold down cmd, opt, shift and power at start up trick.  I have deleted tons of files that were a waste of space.  The problem started after trying to run time machine to reaccess my internet history. I deleted the history and then realized that I wanted it again and I used time machine to recover it. That was around the time it started freezing up.  Also, another culprit could be my email... I accedentally set my email account to active on my school profile and recieved tons of emails at once. I tried deleting them, but many of them gave me an error message and wouldn't let me delete.  Then my computer started freezing up... I don't know what was the culprit, but maybe these clues help?
Also, I am wondering if I upgrade to the free Maverick OS if this has a chance at fixing the problem.  ?
Please help! It's been several days now and I am trying to get my school work done.  If all else fails I will take it to the Apple Store.

    Try resetting the  SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

  • Firefox has recently started freezing and unfreezing, how do I fix this?

As noted above Firefox seems to be having trouble with freezing, I have reinstalled Firefox, Java, and Adobe Flash, all without any success. I am not having such trouble with IE running on the same computer, and going to the same sites. This has happened several times while I type this little bit of text. The text that I input finally shows up, but some mouse clicks don't get through, and I have to make them again.
Edit: I also have cleared the cache, recent history, and deleted all cookies trying to fix this issue.
New edit 12/22/2011: I have now uninstalled 8.0.1, and installed 9.0.1, with the same bad results. I really want Firefox working for me again.

    Thank you for your reply.
The problem self corrected about a month after I posted that, and I forgot that I had made the post.
It may interest you to know that I only have addons of the plugin type. There are eleven of them, and six of those have had updates with the sort of timing that leaves me not knowing if any of them had an update around the start of the problem, or around the end of it. their most recent updates were at least 1 month after the problem ended, and I have no record of any updates before that time. Two of those six are Java plugins, two are shockwave plugins, even though I don't know exactly when they were updated, I do know that they were updated at lease once during the time I had the issue, and those updates didn't fix it. Leaving only a Google update, and Pando web plugin for suspects.
In my OP I likely should have mentioned that in the past I had had short periods with this problem as well, and it always had self corrected in just a few days. The problem wasn't as severe in the earlier cases ether. Next time it happens I will try your method and see if I can end the problem on the spot. The down side to that is that if it's not the Google or Pando plugins, it would have to be one of the ones that most everyone depends on for much of their enjoyment on the web.
Is there anything else you can think of that could be suspect? BTW, I maybe should mention that I don't allow any extra tool bars to install on my browser, It's part of how I like my web experience.

  • EMac (booting from Minimax) recently started freezing.

    Hi all,
I realise this has been covered in some respects elsewhere but I hoped now that I have exhausted all the suggestions from there none of you would mind considering my particular story.
I have an eMac G4 1GB RAM and run Tiger 10.4.8 from a Firewire Minimax hard drive. As you know the eMac came with Panther and I was advised to install Tiger on an external drive by an Mac user of long standing just in case the G$ didnt like it somehow I could always return to Panther. I understood the logic and unitl recently its been perfectly fine.
About 4 weeks ago the eMac started to freeze (beach ball) when I brought it out of sleep mode from over night. The first thing I usually do is open up Mail (if it not already open) and get my emails and it is then Ive been getting the beach ball.
Coincidence I dont know but it was around this same time that I switched back to Mail.app from Thunderbird.
Ive started the eMac up in Panther and all seems fine but I havent done exhaustive tests on whether its the eMac or the iomega Minimax . Ive looked to the best of my ability as to any software problem but everything seems fine and all my permissions etc have been done and also ran Macjanitor just to make sure all the night/weekly/monthly runs were up to date.
Sorry for such a long post but Im starting to worry Im going to have to layout £125 or more for a new external HD.
If anyone has any suggestions from the most basic to advanced it would greatly help.
    thanks so much
    Lee

The easiest, but laborious, way is to create the new admin account, log into it, and ensure that the problem's are gone. If so, then delete the original account, selecting the option to save the user's data (that creates a disk image of the account and stores it into a /Users/Deleted Users folder. Create another admin user account, using the same username/password combo as the deleted one, log into it, mount the saved data disk image, and drag & drop items from it to the newly created account. AFAIK, the only problems come when copying the plists (preference files). That's the laborious part. Copy the new account's /username/Library/Preferences folder to the desktop, repace a few items from the old /username/Library/Preferences into the new one, log out and back in, until you resolve which were causing the problem.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, it recently started freezing upon startup. It would get to a blue screen and just sit there. I've tried booting in safemode to run disk repair and still doesnt help. If I do manage to get past the blue screen, it still freezes

My mac keeps freezing upon startup. It will get to the blue screen and promptly freeze. If I manage to get past the blue screen, and open up youtube on google chrome, it will freeze before it loads youtube. I've tried safeboot and disk repair, nothing seems to work. I even tried to factory reset it but it wont connect to my internet when I reboot with power + option.. any ideas?

This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.

  • TS1702 My pages app, for the iPad, recently started freezing. It's the only thing this is happening to.

Any suggestions? I've already deleted and downloaded it again. I've also restarted my iPad.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, my query is not so much about the sale of the company and the dream. I agree with you on that point. Good for them. My frustration is that this old app has now caused a glitch in my Apple App Store icon. I have a red badge with one update and it is referring to the old app that has been sold that needs to be updated. When I try to update the app it says no longer available for purchase. So I have since deleted that app in hopes that it would resolve the red badge issue. It has not. Somehow, that old app and the new app with the same name but by a different company has caused the glitch. I have reset all settings on my iPad, I have rebooted, I have deleted the app and still the red badge with the one update for the old app is there. Hmmm. . . I guess I need to take this into the Genius bar or wait for ios 7 in hopes that it will fix the glitch. Thanks again for your help.

  • My iMac recently started making random beeping noises. They are all different pitches and lengths. Nothing like a notification. Also does it with the sound muted. I've deleted Skype (several people recommended that) and restarted & shutdown. Please help!

This has been going on for a few months and seems to be getting worse. At times it will be frequent, other times only a few random beeps an hour. Seems to be worse when something is loading or "thinking". I have a video of the beeping sounds I will upload when I get home as it won't let me do it here at work. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, it is driving me crazy! I'm also worried it will crash on me.

    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • Late 2009 iMac running Yosemite freezing and won't wake up when Elgato Eye TV starts to record?

As above really, not much more to add.
My husbands late 2009 iMac recently upgraded to Yosemite (latest update installed yesterday) freezes while in sleep mode and has to be 'force shutdown' by holding power button down and then restarted to get it going again.  Recording is stopped.
The Elgato Eye TV is a dual tuner with latest update.
Sometimes it wakes the computer up and begins recording, sometimes not.
No key taps or mouse jiggles get it to wake nor a quick press of the power button, I can hear the computer running and have to hold the power button down until all is quiet then fire it back up.
Other times it just doesn't wake the computer at all and start recording.  I am all out of things to try, I think he had this problem before but not as badly when the iMac was running Snow Leopard.

    Hi Boaz,
I´m facing exactly the same with my Mini which is remotely controlled by a MacBook via Screensharing. Everything works fine unless the Mini goes to sleep. After that I´m not able to wake it up by the MacBook and Wake on LAN (Wol). Even the share is not listed in Finder´s sidebar anymore. It simply doesn´t show up in the share sections anymore. When I log on to my router I can see, that MacMini is not active and I can send WoL package from the router. That brings the Mini back alive, although it still doesn´t show up in the Finder sidebar. When I connect to the Mini via Finder "Connect to share" and type in: vnc://ip-MacMini I can use screensharing again.......
Also I faced the problem with indexed network phantoms....means my Mini was listed in network shares with several different indices e.g. MacMini(2) and (4) and so on..... I wasn´t able to connect and curiously these phantoms show up even when my Mini was shut off! Looks like bonjour or something else is not working properly....
I fixed phantoms by reseting my router (AVM firtzbox), which worked out perfect since yesterday and no indexed phantom is showing up anymore.....
Haven´t fixed the screensharing or waking up thing yet....
I was also taking part in beta testing program and reported these problems to Apple. In Mavericks everything worked really perfect!

  • IMac (Late 2009) starting freezing when in full screen

Just yesterday (and today) my iMac starting freezing when watching videos (online) in full screen. It happened on YouTube, and other websites with Flash video.
The video would stop playing (i could still hear audio - atleast for a second or two) and it would go all pixally.
Here's what it did when attempting to play Diablo 3:
On the YouTube videos, I would get blue squares.
Then when I'd restart, It would do this:
    Then do this:
It would do that a few times, until I left the computer off for like 10 minutes, then it comes back ok.
It's not my hard drive (I don't think) even though I'm eligible for the Seagate 1TB Replacement Program - I haven't done it yet. Apple Store wanted to keep my computer for 5 days to replace it and I didn't want to leave it for that long...
Anyway, I don't think it's that because I used SuperDuper to create a bootable backup on my Seagate 500GB USB2 external HD and set that as my startup disk - and it happened on that one too.
I don't know what to do now, please help. I'm not ready to buy a whole new computer right now. :-(
    Thanks,
    Dave

The graphic card of your Mac is damaged. This happened to me with my Late 2009 21'5-inch iMac, too. I recommend you to make a backup as soon as possible (soon your Mac will be unusable), and take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller.
At first, the repair time for the iMac 1 TB replacement program was about 6 days, but now it has decreased a lot, so I recommend to get the hard drive and the graphic card repaired at the same time and you will save time. As you are going to have the hard drive replaced, make a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper; this will make the restore easier

IF your system is running extremely slow with no applications running other than Finder then I'd suspect a failing HD or you have a runaway process somewhere. Open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and look to see if you have any applications taking a large %CPU, if you do that is your problem. To test the HD run Apple Hardware Test, please read:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
to learn how to run AHT on your machine, also run it in EXTENDED MODE so it does the most complete test. If no errors are found after the first pass run it another 2-3 times to be thorough.

  • I am having issues with my iphone 4s. Recently it started freezing on me then it crashes.

Recently my phone started freezing, then it will occasionally crash. I am unable to connect it to my wifi and it will drop calls. I was wondering if I restore it will I oose all my phone numbers I have stored or do they get backed up to itunes?

No.  They are not stored in itunes.
Your contacts should be on your computer.  The iphone just alows you to take what is on your computer with you.
They are in whatever program you have selected to sync them with.

Could be over-heating. Try cleaning out the air vents.
