My iMac, running Lion, freezes.

I just got a brand new, 2011 21.5 inch iMac, installed Lion, and whenever I play a video, usually youtube, my iMac wil sometimes freeze. It froze on me four times already, and when it freezes, the only thing I can do is move the mouse cursor. I can't do anything else but shut down the iMac manually, and turn it back on again. Is there something I can do?

Hi Imploding Whale, I having the exact same problem.  iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011.  Never had an issue with Snow Leopard, problem only showed up after Lion upgrade.  Initially thought it was an issue with some after market RAM.  Installed stock Apple RAM.  Have also tried re-installing Lion, no luck.  Software is completely up to date, including Flash.  The freezing occurs most often when clicking a flash video on YouTube or Facebook, but it doesn't occur with every video, and I think it may have occured once or twice when working with iPhoto or iMovie.

new imac running lion 10.7.2     partitioned HD for duel boot and successfully installed windows xp pro (sp2)....have internet through eithernet cable on the mac side but no internet connection on the windows side....need drivers????   please help

I too am running xp spiii on my mac with lion. However I installed xp while running snow leopard then upgraded to lion and both are running fine. If you have the support disc that came with the imac all the relevant drivers are on there. The only other thing i would suggest is that you get spiii and upgrade to that.
    Hope that helps

  • How do I create a bootable Snow Leopard partition on my iMac running Lion?

    Hi.
I have recently bought an iMac running Lion.  I also have software such as Office 2004 and CS2 which I believe I can run using Rosetta, however I think I need Snow Leopard for this.  If I purchase Snow Leopard from the Online Store, how do I install this 2nd OS within another partition on my iMac (yet to be created) and how do I switch between Snow Leopard and Lion on start up?  Will my Lion software and data remain intact as I don't have any Lion disks should I need to reload this?  Can anyone help with a step-by-step instructions as I'm not incredibly confident with the repartitioning of my nice new iMac?

To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
Boot From The Snow Leopard Installer Disc and Install:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
Install Snow Leopard on the newly created partition.

I have a 5 month old  iMac running Lion and W7 with the latest version of boot camp . It has been operating flawlessly until I went to reboot into Mac tonight. Screen went black, and system is unresponsive. I've tried force quitting and turning power off. Hard drive starts, there's a small amount of drive activity and that's it.

Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?
It sounds like this may have happened...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory, (it can happen spontaneously too)...

  • I have 2T imac running lion Can I re-partition and use one half as a back up disk?

Bought a new mac in November and it is refused to start up yesterday. Spoke with Apple  and they said I should make sure I do regular back ups in case I l ose my hard drive?!?! I did a clean install of the Operating software but was advised to erase and install.
I have taken all my important stuff off and can reinstall my programs once I get to the next stage so what I am wondering is
I have 2T imac running lion Can I re-partition and use one half as a back up disk for use with time machine so that I do not have to buy an external HD?
    Cheers J

You could partition the drive, I read that Time Machine will work on if you HD partition.
BUT, it will do you no good if you HD fails.
Usually, if a HD fails it's the entire drive that is dead not just a partition.
So your time machine back would be on a dead disk, useless!

  • What is the best way to connect a G4 running 9.2.2 or 10 to an new imac running lion?

What is the best way to connect a G4 running 9.2.2 or 10 to an new imac running lion?

It should be possible to network them easily.
Ethernet will be the most straightforward. There is no question that you can plug both Macs into a normal network and they can share files if you turn on File Sharing.
The iMac has a Gigabit Ethernet port, and if the G4 also has Gigabit Ethernet, that will be a very fast connection through a gigabit-capable Ethernet cable or router. Otherwise both can use the slower Ethernet speeds with no problem.
You can also network the two machines via a FireWire 800 or FireWire 400 cable if necessary, and use File Sharing that way too. Finally, you can put one Mac into FireWire Target Disk Mode, which turns it into a hard disk that the other Mac can see, but this is the least flexible since one machine goes out of service, and it's probably no faster than Gigabit Ethernet.

  • My imac running Lion keeps dropping the Internet.

My imac running Lion keeps dropping the Internet. Sometimes just switching the wi-fi off and on corrects this but sometimes there it says no ip address. I have found restarting router sorts the no ip address. Help can I do something to stop this. Thanks simon

Your profile shows you're using SL, but you posted it in the Lion forum. So, assuming you're using Lion, I've seen posts where creating a new Network Location and adding a different named wi-fi connection has help others with this problem.
You can also check your router for firmware updates.
Many posts on this topic. Search forums for other possibilities.

  • Windows XP Connection to iMac running Lion

Is it possible to get a Windows XP PC see an Imac running Lion on the PCs workgroup folder? If yes, how? I have already enabled SMB and AFB and added a few shared folders on the Mac. Thank you.

Nope, not possible. You can however install Parallels or VMWare Fusion on your iMac then install XP and run windows. If you can somehow get the data from  your PC  then you can operate OS X and XP simultaneous.  Boot Camp with the version of OS X installed on your system is only designed to run Windows 7. BTW if you want to continue down the XP/Boot Camp path there is a Boot Camp forum.

That can indicate a too-full hard drive. Highlight your hard drive's icon and then do "Get Info..." from the Finder's "File" menu. That will look something like this:
"Available" needs to be about 20MB or 15 percent of "Capacity," whichever is greater. If the drive is too full, this article will help you regain space:

My iMac (running Lion 10.7.3) is connected wirelessly to a Laserjet 2550.  This has operated fine for a long time, but now the printer cannot be found when Time Machine back ups are taking place - Bonjour does not show any devices being available when Time Machine is running.  Does anyone know the cause & remedy please?

Your points match mine pretty well, though here are some thoughts:
    1. I thought about this theory myself this morning (iTunes possibly causing more issues), but I haven't been able to verify it.
    2. When I set up a new user it seemed better for a while, but the issue croppped back up. Yesterday I fully wiped the machine and reinstalled from scratch. I did not reimport my user from TimeMachine, but the problem has come back. My thinking was that I might have some really old software or prefs hanging around causing the issue. No dice.
    3. This is my current theory of the issue, so my next step will be to pull the RAM from Crucial and see how the system behves. IF that doesn't eliminate the problem, I'll pull the factory installed RAM and replace it with the 3rd party RAM. The odd thing is how many people seem to have similar issues - I know two personally, and have seen several posts on forums. I think the most common point for this happening was the 10.7.2 update, which would point to software as the culprit.
    4. That matches my experience.
My hope is that this will be repaired in the forthcoming 10.7.3 release (current production version is 10.7.2), but otuside of what I noted above, I'm at a loss.

just purchased Imac running Lion - doc. and cwk. extensions will not open. whats the fix?

Pages 4.3 is the most recent, but no matter. If Pages cannot open it, there are many other programs that may be able to. Some of them are free.
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
NeoOffice ($10 but older version is free if you can find it)
    OpenOffice (completely free)
Try TextEdit also. It is included in OS X.
If you are trying to open the document by double-clicking it, don't, since the Finder may be looking for a program that is no longer installed. Use Pages' File > Open... menu. The same recommendation applies to using any of the above alternatives - use their File > Open menu.
The least attractive alternative is to purchase Microsoft Word, but I have been completely Microsoft-free since updating to Lion.

  • 24" iMac running Lion often freezes

    Hello.
    I have a 24" iMac (Early 2009)
    2.66 GHz IC2D
    4 GB DDR3
    640 GB HD 7200rpm
    Nvidia GeForce 9400M
    OS X Lion 10.7.2
My iMac very often freezes and the whole screen becoms gray and it says : You need to restart your Computer.Hold down the Power Button.
    I don't get it.
I checked Disk Utilty and it says my Volume is fine.
    What should I do?
    This Really bothers me

This is not a freeze it is a system panic (crash). If you bought AppleCare your system would still be covered and you could call Apple for help. Or if you are near an Apple Store the Genius Bar can help analyze the panic. Analyzing panics is not easy. It could be a hardware problem triggered by Lion, it could be incompatible software, or it could be a bug in Lion itself.
