  • Brand new iMac running very slow!

I just purchased brand new iMac on January 2nd (the specifications are below).  The computer seems to be running very slow just doing normal everyday tasks. I have barely even used the computer and the only installations I've done where the ones recommended from the app store.  I saw I had an itunes update the other day and went to install, the computer sat there for 5 minutes before it did anything.  After it installed the app store still had the badge icon #1 next to it as if it never installed.  During the installation I was listening to pandora, I tried to turn down the music and it took about 45 seconds before it turned down.  I finally tried to log out of my account and it took over 2 minutes to log out.
I haven't had the opportunity to mess with anymore since yesterday.  I feel a brand new computer like this shouldn't be running this slow.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I will probably be contacting Apple Support after I get off work and maybe even exchanging the computer for a new one.

If you are referring to this icon for the App Store:
the red numeral 1 is to tell you there is an update available. It may even have started to download, and been paused.
As far as your Mac's performance goes the Apple Store is the place to take it. You have paid for a one year warranty, and of course there is the option to return it within 15 days. Good luck.

  • IMac running very slow; how can I fix it?

My iMac is running so slow, I can hardly use it all.  All kinds of spinning balls, etc.  I don't even know where to look to diagnose.  If I restart, it will be faster for awhile.  Both Safari and Firefox are running very slow...or not at all.  I have repaired permissions and hard drive.  I have dumped permissions for Safari and Finder and anything else that seemed involved.  I checked my memory....this is the report I got.  Does the fact that the first one say "disabled" mean anything?  I will appreciate help you can give me.

    Questions and Answers:
How full is your Mac's hard drive? * Capacity: 248.92 GB.   * Available:175.18.  *Used 73.75GB on disk.
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?    *Not many.  I try to remember to quit open apps especially when the computer runs slowly.  I always have open Calendar, Mail, Safari.
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.    *I have an anti virus but I do not let it run.  I turn in on to check files and email now and then.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of so called hard drive "cleaning" apps? *No, I have none.
One thing I notice is that when I turn it off at night, it runs very well the next day until I've been on it for a few hours then it gets really bad.  Last night, it wouldn't work at all so I gave up and turned it off.  This afternoon I turned it back on and it has been working very well ever since.
Thanks for looking at this.  I have never checked my hard drive before so I didn't know how much it had on it, but it doesn't seem like it is too full.

  • 3 year old iMac  running very slow, freezing all the time. Advice?

My three year old iMac - 2.4Ghz processor, 2GB RAM, running Lion - is becoming almost totally useless. For many months it has been very slow, with multiple freezes, and then "force quits" on iPhoto and other applications.
First, I tried to free up some space - i now have about 44GB free. Then I ran disk utility etc, Then I ugraded to Lion.
But still I'm getting the same problems. Any suggestions?

It sounds like your problems are more serious than a 'hardware upgrade' issue. My late 2008 MacBook 2.4GHz with 2GB RAM runs applications (and iPhoto) fine. In addition I have run OS X operating systems with little more than 5GB free hard drive space with no issue (being able to run advanced applications like Photoshop).
My advice- if you have simply upgraded to Lion keeping all your systems settings and files intact then you may want to perform a 'clean install', you'll backup your important data/files in order to transfer them back again into Lion. You could even create a Time Machine Backup and use this to move only your data and applications back into your clean install of OS X Lion.

  • New iMac running very slow

Just bought my wife the new iMac (20" 2.4GHz). Connected her old G4 Mini in firewire mode. Transferred her applications and files. Everything is working but the computer is very slow. Much slower than my version 2 macbook. It surfs so slow and Safari has locked up several times. This is on her regular websites not something new. All her apps on the mini were the PowerPC variety and not universal binaries. Could this be an issue? I had Firefox that was optimized for the G4 processor on the mini. It worked on the iMac but was slow. I just installed the latest universal binary Firefox and it is faster but the hard drive is thrashing constantly. Now it only has 1 GB of RAM (I will upgrade) but still, I am only running 1 app... Was importing from a G4 a bad idea?
    Karl

    I ACTUALLY think so!
I have the same iMac you have and it's SUPER fast! and I also have just 1GB Ram... but I'll tell you what I did...
First, I went online and got *Universal drivers* for my *Scanner, Wacom pen tablet* etc... then I got the Universal versions of *CockTail, SuperDuper, HandBreak, Stuffit, Adium, Firefox*... time consuming I know but if they were AVAILABLE for Intel... it didn't seem to be a good idea to SAVE time... just an afternoon that maybe would have cost me a couple days trying to fix future compatibility issues...
After doing that, I installed ONLY three *PPC Apps*, the ones I really need: *Photoshop CS, Flash and Dreamweaver 8*... actually my website is all in Flash, I only use Dreamweaver as a FTP program to upload my files...
Both Flash and Photoshop will run under ROSETTA... even taking lots of RAM, they still run faster than in my old iMac G5 with 2GB Ram... *duo to the Intel processor*...
At least I know that ALL DRIVERS are the original Intel... the iMac is super fast.. I just moved from ATT&T (disgusting 300 KBPS) to ComCast reaching *5 MBPS* on both the *G4 mini* and the *2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac*...
Such a great experience, the large clear screen... a fast machine and a great connection...
If I were you I'd spend a Sunday *re-installing Leopard* and looking for the *Intel version of some Apps*... you don't have to sit in front of the computer all day... you can load the installation DVD and open a beer and come back after a while and download Leopard updates (and open another beer...) cook and listen to a good music... do little by little one day!
If I have a major problem I always re-install the OS... I can't work on a sluggish machine! Better a day doing it than suffering for a LONNNNNNNNNG time!
    Cheers!

  • I want to load large raw XML file in firefox and parse by DOM. But, for large XML file the firefox very slow some time crashed . Is there any option to increase DOM handling memory in Firefox

Actually i am using an off-line form to load very large XML file and using firefox to load that form. But, its taking more time to load and some time the browser crashed. through DOM parsing this XML file to my form. Is there any option to increase DOM handler size in firefox

Thank you for your suggestion. I have a question,
though. If I use a relational database and try to
access it for EACH and EVERY click the user makes,
wouldn't that take much time to populate the page with
    data?
Isn't XML store more efficient here? Please reply me.You have the choice of reading a small number of records (10 children per element?) from a database, or parsing multiple megabytes. Reading 10 records from a database should take maybe 100 milliseconds (1/10 of a second). I have written a web application that reads several hundred records and returns them with acceptable response time, and I am no expert. To parse an XML file of many megabytes... you have already tried this, so you know how long it takes, right? If you haven't tried it then you should. It's possible to waste a lot of time considering alternatives -- the term is "analysis paralysis". Speculating on how fast something might be doesn't get you very far.

  • 2008 iMac running very slow...why?!

My 2008 iMac started running very slowly yesterday, taking ages to start up and showing the spinning wheel on the desktop for ages making it impossible to do anything. It particularly doesn't like running iTunes or Spotify and got worse when I plugged my iPod in. Another thing I can think of is I downloaded an album from iTunes yesterday and this seemed to coincide with it having a breakdown. Chrome is also running slow and I get frequent unresponsive script messages.
I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and have upgraded to iTunes 10.6.1. I recently installed the Flashback removal software. Anyone got ideas as to why my computer might suddenly be behaving like this? Don't fancy an expensive trip to the Genuis Bar! Thank v v much.

    Hi...
How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Freeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac GuidesFreeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac Guides
Since it's so slow to startup, remove any items in  System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items
If there's enough free disk space and removing any items from the Login Items pane didn't help, the startup disk may need repairing.

  • IMac running very slow

    Good Friday to you all.
I am struggling to figure out why my computer is running so painfully slow.  All applications even safari.  I have a word document open and safari running.  I can hear the system running in the background all the time.  Like it is working on something all the time.
Info from version is Snow leopard 10.6.8
Capacity: 250 GB, Available 72 GB.
That is all I know to look for. I have used clean my MAC to scan for excess files etc. but that is about all I know to look for.
    Any tips would be helpful.
My next idea was to buy a external hard drive to off load some big files, like movies and pictures to give me more space.
But this should have anything to do with how slow safari is running ?
    Thank you,
    Karen

Since this problem started, have you restarted the iMac?
Mac OS X uses hidden files called swap files for its virtual memory scheme. If you are logged in for a long time (like a week or more), those files can get fragmented, making basic operations less efficient. So if things start to feel sluggish or you see odd behavior, the first thing you should do is restart.
This can also happen (or happen more quickly) if you are running low on free space on your startup volume. Once you get below about 15% free, the remaining free space will get more fragmented, and Mac OS X will not be able to operate as efficiently. So if you are running low on free space, get an external drive and copy off some of your data to free up space on your startup volume.
Another thing you should do periodically is run Disk Utility and use the +Repair Disk Permissions+ routine (on +First Aid+ tab) on your startup volume. I do it immediately before running Software Update to install an update.

  • Late 2013 iMac running very slow

EVERYTHING is running slow.  My iphoto screensaver keeps freezing, all apps open super slow (wheel spins and spins) and iCal is not syncing properly with google calendar anymore.  I'm not sure what happened in the past few weeks but it has gotten bad!  My computer is only a couple months old.  I ran etrecheck in hopes someone can tell me what's going on.  I also ran disc utility and it found nothing wrong with my hard drive.  I'm running 10.9.1, 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB memory.
Thanks in advance!!  If all else fails I will head to the nearest Genius Bar.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Yosemite 10.10.3 update has my iMac running very slow

    I'm on a iMac from late 2013
    with a 3.5 ghz intel core i7
    16GB of memory
    3T of available storage
Updated Yosemite 10.10.3 a few days ago, and my problems started.
I get a spinning pinwheel after nearly everything I do, and especially while navigating finder windows
I've done disk verify actions, reset PRAM, and cleaned up a few misbehaving applications ... namely firefox.
I have a very limited iTunes catalog
I don't use iCloud, or iPhoto, and subsequently the new Photos app
    - as I organize and back up this material manually
    - though the apps remain on my computer
Nothing looks out of order in looking at activity monitor
I do some iPhone connective things
    --- like the Messages App
--- but don't thoroughly sync my machines
--- perhaps there is something weird happening there?
Open to other ideas of what I might be able to do before reinstalling my OS in hopes that it works better.

    John,
I am having the same issue that etcetera1 is having.  It started about 2 months ago.
    Here are my specs:
    iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011
    3.1 GHz Intel Core i5
    16GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
1 TB Hard Drive with over half of the space left on it.
If it is the hard disk; what type should i replace it with?
    Thanks,
    ~Mike. :-)

  • LabVIEW running very slow over time

I have been working on a project at work for a device to measure the torque capacity of a damper. For this I have two torque transducers one small one large. And a linear actuator to help measure an angle using the law of cosines. My problem is within the first 30 seconds the program runs great after a minute or so it starts slowing down. Since this is a testing device safety is a top priorty and I would like to keep the delay to a mininum. The digital out in the while loop creates an output that shuts the linear actuator if the torque gets too high. Any ideas would be helpful to speed this up.
    Thanks for your time

Why are you creating a new DAQ task for the digital output within the loop itself on every iteration?  That Create task belongs before the loop.
You have 3 arrays that you are building continuously in shift registers.  As they grow, the computer needs to find ever larger pieces of contiguous memory to store those arrays.  I'm surprised you are having problems after only 30 seconds, but not surprised you are having the problems ultimately.  I bet the reason I listed above is the reason it is happening so fast.
Try using the producer consumer archtitecture to pass the values off to a parallel loop and write the data to file condinuously there.
I see in your instructions you are telling someone to hit the Abort button to stop execution of the code.  That is always a bad idea.  You should design your program as a state machine where you have different states for running and setting up different parameters.  A user should never hit the Abort button  (you will fail to clean up tasks properly.)  And they really should never need to hit the run button either once the application is compiled into an executable.

Some time ago I opened a link in an email from a friend and later found out that his email address had been hijacked.  The site the link took me to seemed innocuous, but ever since it seems that from time to time that my internet connection is very slow, as if there is not enough band width.  Is it possible that my computer is infected with some sort of malware?  How can I determine that?  If it is infected how can the malware be removed?

    Here is the report.

  • Imac is running very slow

I've got a 24" imac with the 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 duo and 4 GBs of ram. In January I did a software update and the imac hasn't run the same since. At first I had problems booting up. I would get a file folder with a question mark in the middle. I thought the hard drive had gone bad so I replaced it with a new ssd. I did a new install with snow leopard and have only installed one other program- google chrome. Everything else on the machine is stock leopard software. I have everything backed up with time machine on an external drive. I assumed all of my problems would go away with the new drive/ reinstall but they haven't. I can boot up now like normal but now the imac runs very slow. If I run one application everything is mostly fine but when I try to run something else the spinning beach ball pops up. This will last anywhere from 10-60 seconds. Example- I run google chrome with one tab open and I try and run itunes the computer will freeze up for a few seconds. Then I will try and kill itunes and it will freeze up again. When I am finally able to exit itunes chrome will run normal.
Any help/ thoughts would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

Usually OWC's RAM is just fine however they will probably acknowledge the issue and if pressed will upgrade you to Samsung RAM. However first let's try 2 things. If they don't resolve your problem remove one of the DIMMs so you have 12GB installed:
    1. Do a SMC reset (instructions below)
    2. In Disk Utility Repair Disk Permissions
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Test to see if the problem has been resolved.
