My iMac's DVD drive launches discs across the room when I eject them.

Hi.
I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem, and also, if anyone might have a solution for it.
As of recently, [I don't know the exact date that the problem began, but it's been awhile], whenever I eject a DVD from my iMac's DVD drive [by either ejecting it in Finder, or by pressing the keyboard's Eject button], instead of just coming out halfway like it used to, the drive now launches the DVD across the room.
I'm starting to get annoyed by this problem, especially when I burn something and am not around to catch the disc when it comes flying out, and later find it lying on the floor in the corner of my room.
So does anybody know if there is anything that I can do about this?.
I did that online-chat thing on Apple's website, and the guy told me that I have to bring it in to a service centre, and then disconnected.
I'd like to avoid doing that if possible.
Also, I don't even know of any [or if there even ARE any] that are in Montreal, Quebec, [which is where I live].
Oh, and I bought an AppleCare Protection Plan with the iMac when I bought it last January [2005].
Soooo... Does that do anything for me?.
Thanks so much!.
-Steven.

20" 1.8gHz iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   The DVD drive is a Matshita UJ-825 DVD-R drive.

Hi Steven,
I had the same thing happening with mine. When I was on with Apple Care, they asked me if I would be willing to send them my computer in exchange for a new one (refurbished). It turned out they new about the problem & are trying to figure it out with computers that are actually experiencing the issue. This was just a couple of weeks ago, so you might call & check about it. They cover all shipping costs.
Good luck

  • IPod hard drive audible from across the room

I just received my first iPod, a 30GB Gen5, this evening and installed the proper software, connected up, and waited for a while. The flashing "Circle Slash" DO NOT DISCONNECT appeared and stayed like that for about an hour. I thought it was charging and/or syncing my iTunes library. When I returned after an hour, I waited a bit longer, and noticed that the battery icon indicated a full charge, but the DO NOT DISCONNECT message was still there with the flashing icon. Finally I unplugged the iPod, and heard grinding, clicks, and every now and then an abrupt "thunk". If I held the iPod in the palm of my hand, the "thunk" felt about like it sounded.
After a bit of this grinding routine, the menus came up and I could navigate around OK, but none of my iTunes library was there, and in fact the iPod was never detected by iTunes. Upon further disconnects/reconnects, every now and then my G5 DP 1.8's Finder would indicate I had connected a volume not readable by OSX. Grind...grind...grind...THUNK!
I tried to restore the iPod using the iPod updater, and the updater is currently in a frozen state until I force quit it.
I think that on the basis of the noises it's making, can I safely assume that this iPod has an unhealthy hard drive and should be returned? I've asked a Mac friend of mine (my boss actually) if any of his numerous iPods ever make noises like that, and he indicated no.
    Any suggestions are appreciated...thanks.

This is not normal. It is better to have it checked. Take it to the Apple Store.
    Best.

  • How to install Win7 if iMac's DVD drive is dead?

I recently replaced the hard drive in my 2006 iMac and am starting fresh with Snow Leopard.  The problem is at some point the DVD drive stopped reading DVDs and will only read CDs...(???)  So when I go through the Boot Camp Assistant it can't read from the internal DVD drive.  I've tried the Windows disc in an external USB DVD drive and also in the DVD drive of my new MacBook Pro in Target Disk Mode.
The problem is Boot Camp Assistant never recognizes the disc.  I can attempt to boot from the Windows disc from inside the MBP by holding option at startup, but it goes nowhere.
So how can I get Boot Camp working with a:
burned DVD of a Windows 7 download (valid license)
2006 iMac Core Duo with broken DVD drive
external IDE DVD drive connected with USB to IDE bridge
2011 MacBook Pro and a Firewire cable.
    Help?

Why not get the drive repaired, things will be much easier.

I am using Aimersoft DVD ripping software (legal version) to make mp4 files out of DVDs. It works fine on the IMac internal DVD drive. But when I try and use an external DVD drive using FW800/400 conversion cable, Aimersoft program keeps crashing.

Tiger is serious improvement over 10.1 (although you may need some more RAM) I'm not sure whether it will cure the DVD player issue? If you still have space (9Gb) on your 40Gb drive you could use Mac the Ripper, and then open the VIDEO_TS file in DVD Player.

  • How do I share my iMac's DVD drive to a Windows 7 Laptop?

I know the other way around is easy - lots of how to on how to access your PC's drive from a MBA ... But my PC Laptop's drive is broken I need to use my iMac's DVD Drive ... Is this possible? I also have Win XP installed on Bootcamp if saring only works between Windows...
    Thanks in Advance

System Preferences->Sharing, check DVD or CD Sharing to on.
Also, make note of the iMac's IP address in case Windows
doesn't automatically see it and you need to connect
    manually.

  • CD/DVD Drive is Dead - Unable to feed, Unable to Eject

I believe the symptoms started when I was trying to feed a Costco photo CD or DVD into the iMac, and it would just keep ejecting it out.
When I try to insert something now, there's no noise, no grabbing of the disc, and no inserting. It's like hitting a wall once it's inserted about half way.
I am pretty sure there's nothing in the iMac CD/DVD drive right now... but either way, when I hold the Eject button on start up, or when I hold the left click on startup, nothing happens.
It the motor or the drive dead? How do I diagnose the problem?
    Appreciate the help!

    1) No. Since it won't work in OS 9, either, it is most likely a hardware issue. Apple says to use a straightened paperclip to open the drive manually. I'm not sure that "something sharp" wouldn't damage the drive mechanism, since a straightened paperclip is not sharp.
    2) It's probably going to take a new (or used) drive. You can find one at PowerBook Tech. They also have instructions for replacing it, but it's not an easy thing to do. (You could also maybe find one on eBay.)
Another set of instructions for replacing the optical drive can be found at iFixit. iFixit also has the drive available for purchase, but it's more expensive there.
If you don't want the Combo drive, a CD-ROM or DVD drive can probably be had for less money. eBay may have some really good buys from people parting out their iBooks. Look for somebody with a good feedback profile.
    Good luck.

my cd/dvd drive does nor reconize the inseration of a disk

    Hello lloyd,
    Welcome to Sony Community.
Are you referring to Sony CD/DVD Player or Optical drive for Vaio Computer?
You can locate the model # here.
Verify the disc that you are trying to play is supported by the CD/DVD player.
Try playing a couple of different commercially-produced discs.
If no discs will play, remove any discs from the player and leave the CD player powered on with the door opened (if possible) for approximately one hour to resolve the possibility of moisture condensation inside the player.

  • DVD ejects across the room!

My imac 20inch g5 ejects DVDs and CDs across the room. It seems ok if you only use 1 but when its warm it sends them flying out. Is there an adjustment or something to stop this?

Steve, Welcome to the discussion area!
This area is for discussing iMac G4s.
Since you have an iMac G5, you will probably want to visit the iMac > iMac G5 > Using DVDs and CDs with your iMac G5 discussion area.

  • Satellite P300-19P: CD/DVD drive tries to read the disk then ejects

    Hi,
    I hope someone can help,
    I have a *Satellite P300-19P*.
I have had this notebook 3 months and this is the latest frustrating problem; every now and again when I insert a DVD or CD and close the drawer the drive tries to read the disk and then ejects the disk, even if I take the disk out and shut the drive the drawer still ejects,
If I shut the system down and reboot the problem still exists.
I have checked the drivers which are up to date and the OS is Windows Vista home premium 32bit.
This is the fourth time this has happened and the problem seems to correct it's self and reappears as and when!!
Has anyone had this problem or can anyone help as this is driving me mad.

    Hi!
I think thats a problem with the CD/DVD drive.
In your case I would go to an ASP (authorized service provider). They should check your notebook and change the drive if it is necessary.
Here you can search for an ASP:

Check the manufacturer website if the device is supported on Yosemite.
If not, you can get a SuperDrive from Apple which can run on any OS X version.

I have a iMac, Yosemite 10.10 and my toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it!. I have the preferences checked to show icons and have looked in the utilities folder..nothing. I have also changed ports. ??

    A few things to try:
1-Repair permissions and restart your computer.
    2-Zap the PRAM
3-Use Software Update/App Store to update your OS to OS 10.10.3.  Also, update everything SU/AS has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • How can I stop the ripple across the screen when scrolling down since I upgraded my Mac to Firefox 4 ?

Since I upgraded to Firefox 4 I am getting a horizontal ripple across the data when scrolling down, which is very disruptive and uncomfortable. How can this be corrected. I am using an IMac with Mac OS X 10.6.7 ?

Same problem on Imac with updated software. Had problem in earlier versions and changed key : <key>CGDisableCoalescedUpdates</key>
<true/> to false and that resolved the problem. It helps somewhat with Firefox 4, but not enough. Is this just a Mac problem or are PCs having the same problem? This may be enough for me to switch browsers or go back to 3.6.
