My Imac 's fan goes haywire when screensaver and/ or shutdown  takes place

My 14 month old apple Imac's fan goes crazy when the screensaver and /or shutdown takes place.. otherwise it works beautifully and does not normaly make any noise at all.
Thank you..

Hi Gillal,
If your the fans in your iMac fans are running frequently it may be that your computer is overheating for any number of reasons. This article should help you understand how they work -
Learn about the fans in your Mac
If the iMac seems to be using the fans when it should not be, you may want to reset your iMac's System Management Controller. See this article for the steps to do so -

  • Fan going crazy when booting

When I boot up iMac, the fan goes crazy. After a moment it stops and is quiet again. I unplugged my power and plugged it in again but that does't work. I tried to start AHT by holding D when booting, but that didn't work. I didn't get any discs when I bought my Mac so I can't run AHT using the disc. How can this be fixed?
I also have Windows 7 installed but I don't know if this is relevant. The fan goes mental everytime i boot up. It doesn't matter whether I do that with Windows or OSX.

It's possible you've got a 'hot corner' set up. If you have and move the mouse to a certain corner of the screen it'll do as you describe. Have a look in System Preferences>Mission Control, bottom left of the window click on the 'Hot Corners' button and see if there is anything in there.

  • Fans going insane when doing simple tasks and playing WoW?

Hello. I've been playing WoW, starting a new character last week. Until the other day, I could play fine. But starting the other day, the fans would all of a sudden rev up like I've never heard before. My laptop is very powerful, and far surpasses the recommended requirements.
However, when the fan goes crazy, even if I quit the game, and let it stay at my desktop, the fan is still going insane. And I even set all the graphical settings in WoW to the lowest, but it still makes a very loud noise.
And I've owned many laptops with graphic intensive applications running, and the fans never made this sort of noise. Any ideas what may be happening?

I checked my CPU monitor, and my CPU usage is averaging 1-3% at most. And it's been almost half an hour since I quit the WoW application. I even tried restarting. I'm running on the Windows side right now, and my mac side doesn't have any 3rd party drivers or anything installed on it.
On the windows side, I quit processes related to my gaming keyboard and mouse macro programs, since all I do on Windows 7 (in Boot Camp) is play video games. And for the past week I was able to play Mass Effect, without the fan making this noise, and Mass Effect is 10x more demanding than WoW.

  • My "big Mac" desktop iMac's fan occasionally runs rather loudy and the computer gets kind of hot.  This may last for several hours.  Is that normal and OK?

My "big Mac" desktop's fan occasionally runs rather loudly and the top of the computer gets pretty warm.  This may last for several hours.  Is that normal and OK?

Please check the article below for details on finding activities that are using a high percentage of the CPU. You may need to check when the computer is actually running hot to catch the culprit.
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

  • Internet Traffic Even When Mail And Safari Shutdown?

I have just noticed that my SurplusMeter is detecting slight internet traffic even with Safari and Mail shutdown.
I have, of course, Surplus Meter open, together with ClamXav.
The Bytes Up and Bytes Down fields jump a few hundred every 5 seconds or so and when timed, the meter moved by 0.1MB every 4 minutes.
This would represent about 1.5MB per hour and over 20MB per working day (8am to 11pm) which I would have noticed before as I frequently use less than 10MB per day.
In the past I have come back to my meter after hours and it hasn't moved.
Any ideas what might be causing this slight trickle of activity?

I have just noticed that my SurplusMeter is detecting slight internet traffic even with Safari and Mail shutdown.
I've never used SurplusMeter, but if it's like any of the other bandwidth monitoring tools I've seen it's not watching your internet traffic, it's watching your ethernet traffic.
There is an important difference. Even if the only device on your network is your Mac and your router there will always been some background noise.
Amongst other things, ethernet uses ARP - Address Resolution Protocol - to map IP addresses to physical devices on the network. It does this by sending out an ARP request for any device the machine needs to talk to. For example, if your Mac has the IP address 192.168.1.2 and a default router address of 192.168.1.1 then it will send out an ARP request 'hey! where is 192.168.1.1', to which the router will reply "hey! I'm over here'. That's two packets of data, even if there is no other activity or device on the network.
IIRC, ARP replies are cached for 5 minutes after which the OS sends out another ARP reply to update its ARP table, which ties in exactly with the interval you're seeing.
I'd further guess that 0.1MB is the smallest unit of measurement that SurplusMeter reports, so even the 28-byte ARP request and play packets get reported as 0.1MB
Furthermore, by definition, ARP is limited to the local network and never transmits over your ISP link, so it's not going to count towards any bandwidth usage limits.
So this isn't likely to be anything to worry about. You can confirm this with any of the ethernet sniffers, or even just a simple tcpdump in Terminal.app

  • My fan goes crazy when watching vedio clips?? Why??

Everytime when I watch video clip or movies with RealPlayer, the fan of my Macbook just goes crazy. It sounds like a jet. Is it something wrong with the Macbook or the Realplayer?
Does anybody else have experienced this issue?
    How could it be solved??
    Thanks

    Like this:
    1) Click on the blue apple in the top left of your screen.
    2) About this Mac
    3) Click the "More Info" button
    4) When the System Profiler opens, click on Applications. It is in the left pane near the bottom.
    5) The right should now contain all the names of your applications in alphabetical order. Look for RealPlayer.
    6) Once found, click on it to clearly highlight it.
    7) You should see:
    Version: 10.1.0
    Kind: Universal
If you don't see that, then uninstall RealPlayer and download the correct version from:
    http://www.real.com
Read everything VERY carefully. Look for the Intel version of the player.
I just realized that you might be asking how you know if you have the latest system and firmware updates. If that is the question, then:
    1) Click on the blue apple in the upper left of your screen.
    2) Click "Software Update..."
    3) Download 10.4.7 (if you don't have it already)
    4) Download Intel Firmware update (again, only if you don't have it already)
    5) Reset your machine when prompted by OS X.
That's about I can type right now (my brain is pudding). Post back if this STILL wasn't helpful enough (or at all).

  • My laptop goes haywire when the sound is unmuted

My laptop is going berzerk anytime I unmute the sound on it. When the sound is muted everything works fine, however when I unmute it the laptop will paste zxc\ty,.\ in the nearest free space, the caps lock will turn on, touchpad locks up, the scroll bar on the left will be stuck scrolling down and will nothing will work/stop until I hit the spacebar three times. Then I can once again use the keyboard but the zxc\ty,. keys will not work as well as the enter key on the main keyboard and the num lock on the keypad. When I try to mute it again, the mute button will not work and I will have to mute it using the touch pad by clicking on the speaker icon and selecting mute. Once it is muted again, everything will go back to functioning normally but without sound of course. Any ideas what could be causing this or how to fix it?

  • Video Display on Laptop goes haywire when you go to print a document

    Hello and Help..
I have a brand new HP 14-r001TU Laptop
It is running win 8.1 with all the updates it appears to work fine when browsing the web.
My printer is a HP 2540 with the latest driver installed, test pages print perfectly.
If I browse to a web page then want to print that web page then the issues start. The image on the page is partly displayed in a foreign language or script language, part of the page is usually ok. Graphics appear to largely be displayed ok, mainly the text component is affected.
i dont believe it's a printer issue but i may be wrong? The printer prints the corrupted page that is displayed.
Google Chrome was the browser, removing this program and defaulting to Inet Explorer has not fixed the issue..
Flash player, adobe, microsoft viewers are all installed and updated but still the problem exists.
I have checked to see if the intel graphics driver is up to date and it is..
    HELP!!!!
    Thanks
Problem now sorted. Google Chrome was the issue..

You '''don't''' want Print to File selected.
Is your hardware (physical) printer selected, or a virtual printer like XPS or the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer selected?
If you want it printed to paper you need to have a "real" printer selected.

  • The iMac CPU fan going ape **** after upgrade

Just installed Mountain Lion - result: CPU fan is at 3000 RPM constantly. CPU temperature 50 celcuis, GPU around 70. Nothing serious is running - just Safari iTunes and Mail.
    Any suggesions?

If you're running ESET Cybersecurity you may need to upgrade.  Older versions have been causing a crash in the Launch files which means reportcrash constantly triggers (drains battery and kicks in the fans).
    Here's the fix...
First, check you've got a problem with crashreport (run Activity Monitor and select 'All processes').  If crashreport is at the top of the list with 100+ % CPU time and you have ESET then it's possibly this issue.
Go to Eset website and download the latest version of Cybersecurity and run the dmg file once downloaded.  Click the 'uninstall' button to remove and you should (hopefully, as I did) see the crashreport stop.  You can then reinstall ESET (I have done with the newer version with no problem).
I'm not sure if a straight install over the top (upgrade) will work - easy to uninstall and reinstall in a few mins anyway.
I hope this helps a lot of people out!

  • IMac loud whirling noise when asleep and after shutdown

For the last two or three days I have noticed a loud whirling noise when my iMac goes into sleep mode.  Today it is now doing so after shut down.  The only way to get it to stop is to be logged in and working or unplugging the machine.  I have a 21.5 iMac and its only 6 months old. Any ideas?

Contact Apple's Express Lane since it's under warranty. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located).  BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best warranty policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

  • Since installing Firefox 4, screen goes black when dormant and will not automatically reopen on first try.

Since installing Firefox 4, if I leave the computer (desktop with a Viewsonic VG1930wm monitor), the monitor will go to blackscreen...not the starfield screensaver. If I move the mouse, the screen will only momentarily go back to the last desktop...and then almost immediately black screen again. I typically have to turn the monitor on and off five or six times...and move the mouse each time, before it will stay open to the desktop. Any ideas?

Standard troubleshooting steps in order are as follows:
Power the iPad off and on.
An iPad reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.
Restore your iPad with iTunes from your iPad's backup.
Restore your iPad with iTunes as a new iPad or not from your iPad's backup.
If no change after the last step, your iPad has a hardware problem.

  • When I click on Mozilla icon, it now goes directly to iGoogle and there is no place to enter a website address.

This just started happening. So I can't use Mozilla Firefox and I like to use Firefox. Now I have to go through Internet Explorer. How can I get back to being able to use Firefox and not be taken to iGoogle search? I can't enter a web address from there.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F).

If the menu bar is hidden then press the F10 key or hold down the Alt key to make the menu bar appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible:
*"View > Toolbars" or Firefox > Options
Open the Customize window to set which toolbar items to display:
    *View > Toolbars > Customize
*Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout
*Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
*If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up
