My iMac's internet is super slow!!!!

I have several devices that are conected to the internet at any given time. Including an iPhone 5, iPad 2, iMac 21" and several other computers. All my devices are connected to the internet through an Airport extreme. My internet download speeds are consistantly around 20-25 mbps, however when I try to load a web page on my iMac its like its 10 years ago and I am using dial up. And while waiting for my iMac to load the page if I try to load the same page on either my iPad or iPhone it will load instantly. Again all of my devices are connected to the same Airport extreme.
At first I thought that it was Mediacom's crappy service but then I noticed that my other devices are working perfectly.
Please help, this is extremely annoying considering I use this computer for work and I need constant and fast internet for my job.

Can you temporarily turn off Virus Barrier to see if this is slowing your system?
Also in your iMac's Applications folder, locate the Utilities folder, open it and look for and launch Activity Monitor.
Look at the Processes Tab and see if there is anything that is using a high percentage of your iMac's resources.
Also, it may just be you need to install more RAM memory.
if your iMac has a 3.06 Ghz CPU, then it is NOT a 2011 model, but a 2010 model iMac.
OS X especially versions 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion use a lot of CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive resources.
The base 4 GBs that came with your iMac is not an ideal amount of RAM, but just enough to give sufficient operation of your iMac out of box.
OS X, by itself needs between 2-4 GBs of RAM to operate smoothly and efficiently on its own.
Start running extra applications on top of this and there will be more and more slow down of your iMac.
Your iMac can take up to 32 GBs of RAM.
I recomend installing, at least, another 4 GBs of RAM. If you can afford to install more, great then do that!
But you could just start with only an additonal 4 GBs of RAM.
You should see a speed improvement by just doubling the amount of RAM memory.
Here are the RAM specs for your 2010 iMac.
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots
4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
You can purchase reliable Mac RAM online from Mac RAM vendors Crucial memory or OWC ( also known as macsales)
Good Luck!

  • Internet is super slow. Please help.

Ok... So i've owned my new macbook for about 2 months now. Within these 2 months I have been contected to the internet via my ethernet cable with verizons dsl.
The internet was at a good speed, but it always could be better, a little faster. Especially compared to my old HP laptop with Windows XP.
Well, a few days ago i bought a Belkin Wireless router so I can go wireless at home. I easily set this new device up and was online wirelessly. (i've owned a previous belkin wifi router before and had no problems.
Now... when im online wirelessly, the internet is super slow. sites like youtube.com take forever to load. the videos on that site only load to about 1/4th the entire length. other sites just take a while to load, like ebay.com---especially apple.com
so i decided to connect my ethernet cable again to my macbook and try that again. now even with the ethernet cable, my internet is still slow.
this needs to change. as im sure you can relate, when a problem occurs when dealing with your computer, it can drive you bonkers.
i would be calling applecare right now for help but its really late right now.
    ALSO!
Ever since i set up the wifi, ichat has not been working properly. i'll sign on and remain signed on but according to all my friends, on their computers it states i have signed off. i'll even attempt to write to them, send it, but they dont receive it.
one last thing. im not sure if this is due to this whole internet/wireless/router/ethernet thing.... but.... some of my applications take a little while to open. not too long but is noticeable.
    Thank You.

Many DSL and cable modems don't play nice with MacOSX, and DNS service from major ISPs seem to be getting less usable all the time. I recommend http://OpenDNS .com/
Open your System Preferences, Network prefpanel, Doubleclick on the network interface with the green button, probably Built-in Ethernet. In the field where it says "DNS Servers", paste whichever address you want. Click Apply Now.
The  OpenDNS  servers are at 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 and yes, they are fast and reliable.
Set your modem to  OpenDNS  too, on the modem DNS configuration page. You should see a huge increase in internet speed. Sometimes the configuration page is very hard to find, but the OpenDNS website has instructions for all popular modems.

  • Internet is SUPER slow on Macbook after update!

I updated my Macbook to 10.4.10, and for some reason ever since the internet has been slow It takes at least double if not triple the time to load Facebook and Myspace takes about 1 minute.

Here are some pictures of my network activity! Anything I can do? Is there an update I can do to fix this?

...and if Rick's suggestion doesn't provide any improvement to your situation, try downloading the OS 10.4.10 COMBO update for Intel and reapplying it. Reapplying the combo update has been reported to fix numerous crappy performance problems that people have posted in the iChatAV, Mail, Print&Fax, and other forums.
<soapbox flag = .TRUE.> As a general rule, I ALWAYS download the combo update, NEVER the incremental updates through system update, and have NEVER had a problem develop after applying a combo update. <soapbox flag = .FALSE.> (problems typically have only developed for me after I've installed some piece of crapware on my computer, which usually gets fixed after reapplying a COMBO update or by removing the piece of crapware and reapplying the combo update).
Don't forget to verify your boot disk before starting, and repair permissions before starting and after you're done.

  • Yosemite iMac, Mac mini - WIFI super slow!

    Hi there guys
Prior to posting here I did couple of days of search, and I found plenty of posts in regarding to Yosemite and wifi problems.
Some just venting over the issue, some attempt to offer solutions, from removing Pref files to setting up DNS (8.8.8.8) etc...
Unfortunately, without much help on my end.
I recently bought two new iMacs and one Mini. All preloaded with Yosemite and all experience the exact same problem.
They connect but download at 1/10 of my speed, upload at 1/20 of my wifi speed.  I get disconnected very often, or perhaps
the right word would be 'hanged" ? The internet just stop responding for couple of minutes and then comes back.
I do a test of my connection speed using my old ipad, my OnePlus Android and my Samsung Note 4, all run at the exact
speed of my house network. I do this from the exacy place where my computers are. So it is not my Wifi.
Also, I have chromecast streaming HD videos all day long, without any problem. So my internet is great and no issues.
Any tested, working solutions ? Or shall I just return that junk back to the store, stick to my old hardware and return to new
set upon future, better OS? Given this is a few months old problem and very little working solutions.
    cheers
    Seba

FWIW here are my troubleshooting routines with my Intel Mac mini (Applications > Utilities > System Profiler.app: 2,66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Boot ROM Version: MM31.00AD.B00):
    - Backup regularly to an external disk (I use Carbon Copy Cloner)!
    - Check the disk with Disk Utility > First Aid > Verify Disk and Repair Disk Permissions.
    - Reset PMU or SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    a) Wait fifteen seconds.
    b) Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
    - Reset NVRAM/PRAM:
Press the power button to turn on the computer while immediately holding the following keys: Command, Option, P and R. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound four times.
    Then immediately:
    - Boot in Safe Mode:
Boot the computer while holding shift until you get into "Safe" mode.
    Reboot.

  • 27" iMac mid-2011 running SUPER slow

    Hi all,
I got my iMac a couple of weeks before OSX Lion came out and it was working great on Leopard. Then, when I upgraded it slowed immensely and struggled to do very basic things. For example, once I open FCPX my iMac will freeze for about a minute before any progress and this will occur infrequently. Even after I've closed that application completely, it'll be stuck on an insanely slow speed when performing even menial tasks (lagging a few seconds when recovering from the monitor sleep mode when nothing has been opened).
I've checked that I don't have many applications open at the time, the destop is uncluttered and the HDD not full. At the rate it is performing, I would say my more than 5 year old PC would drastically outdo my less than a year old iMac. I'm currently chalking it up to Lion or possibly the RAM but cannot be sure.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

It won't do a thing to your data. However running FCPX on only 4GB RAM that could be  your problem right there. Run a session of FCPX as you normally would and open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilties - Activity Monitor) and check to see how much FREE RAM the computer has. You will find the FREE RAM by clicking the System Memory tab. As a general rule of thumb under normal operation the system should have a minimum for 500MB of FREE RAM, if it has less it's time for a RAM upgrade. The graphic will look similar to:
While you are in Activity Monitor looks in the columns for the %CPU column. If you see a process that is using a large %CPU then you have an issue with that app. Let me know how much FREE RAM you system has please.

  • Internet browsing SUPER slow on MacBook Air

Hi - browsing seems to have slowed to a crawl on my Mac, and I don't think it's the connection (other computers do fine on it). I haven't noticed any noticeable slowing while using other software. Any ideas? Could it be the browser, or some configuration? Would appreciate any ideas - thanks!

How much free disk space do you have on what size hard drive? How much memory do you have?
When your browser slows to a crawl, have you looked at the Activity Monitor (on your hard drive under Applications/utilities? You're looking to see if a program is using a large amount of the CPU.
If you boot via safe mode (hold shift key when booting ... will take longer than normal), do you still see browser problems?

  • Late 2013 iMac 27" bootcamp is super slow

My Bootcamp takes a little over 5 minutes to load into windows 7 and i have no idea why it takes so long to boot.
I have scanned for malware and any other type of virus and nothing is there i cleaned out my temporary files to see if that would help but nothing seems to speed the process up.
Once every thing is loaded up its as fast as the mac side but if i could figure out why i am having this problem it would be so wonderful.

No. The main difference between a Windows and OS X boot is a BIOS emulation layer that is necessary for Bootcamp Windows (but not native Windows on normal PCs). The BIOS emulation layer may affect performance a bit, but not significantly.

    HI
My problem relates to this topic but I have an added aggrivation.
I connect via wi-fi...and have been for 9 months. When I turn on my Mac and open safari...all seems fine for the first 5 or 6 pages pages I navigate to but then it slows to a snails pace and then just stops.
It will then open the network diagnostics page and it ends up with me going through the routine and the messsage saying I am connected to the internet and that maybe I typed the incorrect internet address.
I am having to type this email from work as I cannot even get as far as the mac site on my MAC
(last night I took it to the MAC clinic and in the store it all seemed to function normally) the minute I got home same problem
I was advised to us camino as my preferred browser but when I tried to download it it was downloading at 2kp/s with a download time of 3 hrs....this seems archaic!
Please if anyone can offer some advice
    Thanks
    Gavin

  • Internet / download very slow on windows 8

    Guys,
I have recently installed windows 8 on my macbook. Now I am having a problem, because my internet is super slow. Is someone familiar with this problem? what is the cause and solution? Does this have anything to do with the drivers from bootcamp which are still not available. Thanks

The problem is likely that Apple has not yet released Win 8 drivers.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite. Super slow and ReportCrash constantly running...

I upgraded to Yosemite the other day and my iMac (2011) is running super slow. I've done the whole PRAM reset, the SMC reset, the boot into Safe Mode, the Repair Disk and Permission from Recovery Mode, turned off File Vault and Transparency, etc. and it's still pretty slow. But I did notice in both Activity Monitor and Console that ReportCrash is constantly running. It didn't run in Safe Mode, but even in Safe Mode the computer was equally slow, especially with Safari. I'll paste some of the Console logs below in case someone can tell me what's going on. My other question is: should I do a clean install or just roll back to Mavericks, since the features I wanted (Handoff and SMS Messages) don't even work with Yosemite on my iMac. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

  • Brand new iMac: super slow web browsing

Brand new iMac is super slow while browsing the web.
We have cable internet, and the iMac is connected via ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router. We have a Windows machine connected to the same router.
The Windows machine loads web pages extremely quickly, the iMac takes 20 seconds to a minute to load anything.
Clearly there is a settings problem on the iMac. No idea what.
    It isn't the router.
    It isn't the broadband connection.
    It isn't the DNS server.
    Please help!

I'm not sure if you understood my original post, however, I will re-iterate it here.
I have several machines connected to the same network.
    MacBook Pro
    Windows machine
    iMac.
Only the iMac exhibits any problems.
Clearly, the ISP is not the issue. The iMac is connected via Ethernet to the same router as the PC.
Clearly the Mac is the problem.
Changing DNS server has no effect.

  • IMac super slow

In the last few weeks my iMac has become super slow.  Lots of spinning beach balls.  Reinstalled Mavericks.  Used Disk Utilities to verify and repair permission and verify disk. OnyX to clean up some issues.  Minimized start Login items.  Cleaned up old apps I wasn't using.  Emptied Trash.  Only one item on Dashboard.
Installed Etrecheck and have included the output.  I'm hoping someone can help me out, before I do a clean install.

  • IMac 27" 3.06GHz 240GB SSD / 2TB WD Black Caviar 16GB SUPER SLOW

Hi Apple or other fellow Apple Users,
I have the iMac 27" 3.06GHz and was on Snow Leopard. Was amazingly snappy and fast but I wanted more.
Upgraded RAM to 16GB and soon the 1TB filled up and was slowing me down.
I took out the optical drive and installed a Runcore 240GB 2.5" SSD with a Caddy holding the drive using the optical bay's connection (with an adapter of course)
Replaced the 1TB with a WD 2TB Black Caviar as my Data drive.
Freshly installed OSX Lion on the 240GB SSD and then moved the Users document folders linked to the 2TB drive.  Apps are installed on the 240GB SSD and Trim support is switched "on".  Ran fine (but not super fast like it should) for awhile but now after some usage, it slows down to the point where typing letters takes about 10 seconds to come out, spining wheel appears virtually everywhere, Flash pages loadings are extremely laggy.
I am a photographer and use Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop CS5 and a load of other graphic applications.  They run quite slow after about 1 hr of usage and then to the point where it's unbearable.
Usually speeds back up after reboot, but then super slow again after some usage.
I believe it has something to do with the Fans that after SSD installtions, causes them to run constantly, so the iMac is constantly cool around 36 degrees and hottest at 41 degrees.
Done Repaired permissions, rebooted to safe mode and have plenty of hd space.  Updated everything and OSX 10.7.2
Any ideas how to speed it back up?
    Thanks

How did you manage to get the SSD and the 2TB drive in your new Imac? OWC said you couldn't update those internal parts. I am too looking to get an Imac 27" but I want to add my own SSD and 2TB drive similar to what you did. did you buy the imac with this set up already from apple? do you have to get the SSD/Harddrive combo from apple to have the parts needed for the replacement? thanks in advance.

If this is Internet related, the slow downs can be caused by increased user activity on your ISP's server.
The more people on your ISP's server doing things on the Internet, the slower your connection will be.
Is there certain times of the day when you notice  the Internet is slow?
If so, that's probably the reason.
Also, do you share a connection with anyone else? Either on WiFi or Ethernet?
That will slow your connection, too!
Do you know what your Internet download speeds are?
Not a high enough bandwidth and slow downs will be more evident.
If on a WiFi, is the router you are you using 802.11 B, G, or N speeds?
Might be time from a newer, faster router?

  • MacBook 2010 web browsing super slow!!?? Wireless Internet.

I purchased my MacBook in May, and at first everything worked fine, but lately the web browsing has been super slow with the page taking forever to load or just not loading whatsoever. The connection signal is strong and the internet is working fine as my computer downloads files at a good speed. I have an old PC laptop that the web browsing works fine on from the same connection so the problem must lie with my macbook. any ideas?

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions,
You didn't mention which browser you are using so I assuming it's Safari...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Web pages include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. *These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down.* It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Check for duplicate or corrupted fonts, instructions here. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10389716-263.html?tag=mncol;title
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps there. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Remove any files or apps there.
Quit Safari if it's open for this.
Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file. Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. If Safari speeds up loading web pages, them move the .plist file to the Trash.
