My iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down my screen

Hi, my iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down the screen and has a large black square in the centre saying "You must restart your computer by pressing the power button and then pressing it again to restart" or words to that effect in English and about 4 or 5 other languages.  I find this happens more frequently when I try to stream movies or tv shows.  It also happened when I was trying to download a couple of tv shows from iTunes.
It also sometimes makes a wierd sound a kind of loud noise like a record stuck in a groove.  This has happend many times since upgrading to Lion.  I hear a lot of people on here talking about their screens going completely black and not responding.  I believe that mine has only gone black a couple of times and I couldn't wake it up from "sleep mode" with the mouse or keyboard.  I don't know if this is also happening to other people, but my bluetooth keyboard keeps disconnecting all the time since the upgrade as well, it's driving me nuts!!  Plus my wifi will show that it is fully operational, however, I can't use the internet when I wake my computer from sleep mode.  I have to click on wifi and turn wifi off then on again before i can use it.
Is Apple going to come out with a fix or are we going to eternally suffer indefinitley.

Hi Eric,
I don't know why it didn't work before, but here is the most recent errol log.  It crashed again about an hour later.  If there is a solution, i would greatly appreciate knowing what it is because I can't enjoy using my computer anymore because of these constant crasahes.
Thanks for your time.

  • IMac keeps feezing and showing a coloured screen

    Hi All
My iMac keeps freezing and I've tried a few standard trouble shooting methods but can't figuire out what's wrong with it.
It keeps freezing and stops responding and then shows a coloured screen. Once it was a bright green screen, another time it was dark black and another time it was light yellow. The first time it happened odd random pixels could be seen on screen that weren't meant to be there. Holding down the power button and restarting is the only way to sort it out.
It normally happens 10 - 15 mins after boot up, generally doing fairly mundane tasks (spotify, safari, mail).
I've tried doing a software update and also veryfying and repaing the disk and I was wondering if there was anything else I could try.
    It's an early 2008 24" iMac running Lion 10.7.2.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, I'm hoping it's not a hardware problems
    Thanks.

    I've have now:
    - Verified Disk Permissions
    - Repaired Disk Permissions
    - Reset PRAM
    - Reset SMC
    - Performed an extended Apple Hardware test which came back with no problems
The issue still persists unless I am in safe mode.
I don't suppose there is anything else I could try before I take it to a shop?

  • IMAC is freezing and shutting down without explanation

My IMAC is  freezing and shutting down without explanation . Any thoughts or suggestions?  Could this mean the motherboard is about to die? I have considered erasing the hard drive and reloading, but I'm unsure if that will help i.e. if I back up my IMAC using time machine, then I am just relaoding the problem when I use time machine to reaload........ Thanks!!!

Any thoughts and thanks for the reply.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer and try -
    <a href=http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 or http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
You can also cross post over in the Intel iMac area regarding your motherboard concerns.  Users who use the same model computer as yourself would know.

  • When I try to access my add-ons, firefox freezes and I have to shut it down

I never used to have any problems but started getting script errors. I have repaired this but now I cannot access my add-ons. Every time I click on it in the Tools menu, Firefox completely freezes and I have to shut it down.

Do you have the Personas Plus 1.6 extension? If you do that one is known to conflict with Google Toolbar and cause the sort of problems that you are having.
Try starting Firefox in [[safe mode]] to see if you can access the add-ons manager. If you can and have Persona Plus, try disabling/uninstalling it whilst in safe mode. If you do not have that add-on, another one may be causing problems, to try to track down which one see [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
Another thing you can try is deleting the files that store details on installed add-ons, if one of them is corrupt it can cause problems. To do that first open your profile folder, for how to do that see the [[profiles]] article.
After you have opened the profile folder, close Firefox and delete extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini and compatibility.ini. When you re-start Firefox those files will be re-created.

  • Firefox freezes and then greys out

After a short period of normal use Firefox freezes and when I try to click onto a new page the picture greys out partially. On the top of my screen it says that Firefox is not responding. My only course of action is close the program down. When I do that a small window opens Saying Firefox is not responding and gives the option of closing the program or waiting for it to respond.
I have tried removing Flash 11.3 and installing 10.3 - no change.
Tried removing and reinstalling Firefox - no change.
Disabling all plugins - no Change.
Tried restoring PC to an earlier point - No change

Note that a "Reset" creates a new profile and tries to import some settings from the old profile leaving the old profile intact, including the cache folder (about:cache) that can take up to 1 GB.

  • IMac was freezing and now wont start?

My iMac was running a little slow the past 2 days, and whenever i tried to type something in safari it would bring up the loading wheel and take forever just to type something. I installed google chrome and it kept happening so it's not safari. Next my mac started freezing and i would have to just turn it off and restart it. Turning it back on it would load sometimes but take awhile, sometimes it wouldnt load so i'd turn it off and try again until it worked.
now when i turn it on the gray/white screen comes up with the apple, but no loading thing comes up under that. after a few minutes the apple gets replaced with a circle with a line through it. After about 5 minutes of not starting, a blinking folder with a question mark starts flashing and it does this until i turn off the computer.
soooo, what is wrong? how do i fix this? is there another way to start the computer?

i put in my snow leopard install disk and then restarted using my internal hard drive and it worked fine for a few hours. Then it crashed again and now it's doing it again and cant find my internal hard drive. I have most my stuff stored on an external hard drive but does this mean i have to buy a new computer? or a new internal hard drive? how much would that be and for them to install it? stupid macs, i thought they were supposed to work better than PC's. Or is your hypothesis wrong since it did start up after you said it was dead.
It does sound like your hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced. Mac hard drives are the same products as they are in PCs and they ALL fail, on average a HD should last 3-5 years however some last months and some last 6-8 years. So there isn't any reason to be angry at Apple. Make sure you are backed up and make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP. A replacement hard drive will probably run in the $200-$300 range including labor.

  • I just installed mac osx snow leopard in my iMac. windows freeze and unfreezes.

Help needed again. I just installed mac os x snow leopard on my imac. sometimes when I open a window it freezes and then suddenly unfreezes until the next time. the tool bar does not identify what program is opened when frozen. It says finder instead
Thanks for everyones help. It has made a huge difference. I hope this is the end of my issues with this new OS.

Have you run Software Update several times to ensure you've picked up all available updates after upgrading to Snow Leopard?

  • IMac G5 Freezing and mouse inoperable

iMac G5 frequently freezes where I am not able to click on anything. The mouse arrow will move around but I get no response when trying to click on anything.
Also, at times the mouse arrow will dissapear when I'm moving it around. Are these two problems connected?
I've already tried moving the mouse usb from the keyboard to the back of monitor. That doesn't help. Also I've noticed when it's frozen, the time and day is not on the top right corner.

    Continuing from the other thread...
Try an SMU reset. if you have the Rev B (ALS) or iSight G5 model see this link:

If you have the original Rev A G5 model see this link:

These are the iMac (early 2006) forum. For better informed responses to your question try posting in the appropriate IMAC G5 Forum here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=881
Although from what you say (freezing up randomly, inability to click mouse), it sounds like a bad memory stick. Did you, by any chance, put additional RAM on your machine? Check the memory in system profiler to make sure they are all ok.
As for the mouse pointer moving around uncontrollably, try a solid colored mousepad, as some mousepads with stripes and intricately colored designs tend to "throw off' or confuse the optical lens of your mouse.

  • I7 iMac Processes Freezing and Computer Locking

    Hi everyone,
I'm using an iMac i7 with 8GB RAM, but it's intermittently pausing and eventually locking up hard.
On a fresh reboot, I get a couple hours work, then the machine starts pausing, eventually locking up. The processes are active for about 15 seconds, then freeze for the same amount of time. In Activity Monitor the active processes (e.g. Finder, Terminal, Safari, Activity Monitor, etc.) appear as "Not responding" during the frozen period (unless Activity Monitor is also frozen, which it often is).
According to iStats and `top`, I've got 6GB of RAM free, and the CPU usage is generally 0-1% (i.e. idle). No processes are using any measurable amount of CPU or RAM.
When I reboot and run the 'D' hardware tests, no problem is discovered.
According to iStats, the computer's temperature seems fine (HD: 52°C, CPU: 46°C, ambient: 23°C, GPU diode: 59°C, GPU heatsink: 58°C, memory controller: 51°C, power supply: 64°C), as do fan speeds (optical drive: 999rpm, hard drive: 1125rpm, CPU: 937rpm).
As a matter of interest, this started happening two days ago after the computer locked up while playing Starcraft 2 and I had to hard-reboot. At the time I was (and still am) running 10.6.4; I'd installed the Snow Leopard Graphics Update on August 31st.
I'd be very much obliged for any thoughts and input, as - unless I'm mistaken about the hardware somehow - the usual suspects aren't appearing (i.e. a rogue process, overheating, broken fan, etc.).
If I were to guess, I'd suspect a problem with the scheduler, but I don't know that much about Darwin to test.
Thank you kindly for any thoughts and suggestions.
    Brian

Hi, when I had that type of issue on my C2D the HD was the cause..
You could have either the Apple Genius's or your local Apple Approved Service Agent take a look & run some tests..Their testing programs are more vigorous than techtool... Have you rebooted holding down the D key, (D=Diagnostics)? it has 2 levels, try them both...L

  • IMac 2006 freezes and crashes more and more.

Seems to be happen at any time. Will not respond to force quit and does it all the time if viewing youtube? Sometimes screen turns black but mostly just freezes.

    Hello,
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
    iStat Menus...
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
    And/or iStat Pro...
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

  • Everytime i open a powerpoint file on my imac it freezes and i cannot close it down or work on it...

WHy does a powerpoint file freeze everytime i open it on my imac...

Please do NOT post your question multiple times in different threads.
One possibility is that the version of Powerpoint installed on your Mac is enough older than the version of Powerpoint on the PC used to create the file  that it cannot read it.
    Hope this helps

  • IMac i7 Freeze and spinning ball of death

    Hiya
My iMac i7 froze me out this morning while I was using a USB memory stick.
The window went all corrupted looking and the spinning ball of death appeared.
How do you restart with a wireless keyboard and mouse, when nothing is clickable. (other than turning the power off) ? :-/

Press and hold the power button until it turns off, then start it again.

  • HT3680 My 3 year old iMac is freezing and I get a message "startup disk almost full for running applications. delete files..." Where do I find the startup disk and what should I delete?

My 3 year old Mac is having trouble and freezes up from time to time lately. I get a message saying "startup disk almost full, delete files ..." something about having enough room for applications to function.  I know my startup disk is the Macintosh HD, but what kind of files do I need to delete and how much space do I need to free up?  In my "about this mac" area, it says I have 4.89gb free out of 319.21  So I am confused why I need to do this.

You're less than 2% free and should always have at least 15% (my SWAG). Best is to get an ext FWHD and move stuff from the startup disk to it and delete it from that. Best things to move are movies, music, and photos, using the apps that manage those things.
