Have you tried a soft-reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear and it should reboot.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -

Probably the GPU or display is damaged. If you can control the iMac, turn it off, and if not, hold the Power button until it turns off. Then, turn it on again. Does the error appear again?
Remember that GPU problems appear and disappear randomly. If the computer is working properly after turning it on, the problem will reappear later. I suggest you to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get it repaired. Depending on the iMac you have and if it's the GPU or display, the repair will be more or less expensive -

Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.

I've tried 2 different screen capture devices, and in both cases, audio stops recording after 20 or 30 seconds, but video is fine. The audio disappears with both programs. Does anyone know what is happening with my audio capture?
Update, I took the webcam home over the weekend and tried on my home network and the outcome was the same video fine - audio delayed, is this a Skype for desktop issue?
