My iMac screen is freaking out...help!

It's doing two different things (not usually at the same time):
- Sometime when I move a window, like in Safari, a chunk of the window will remain behind. Or look as if it is (the chunk doesn't actually do anything). But if I move anything over that chunk, then move it away again, it's gone.
- Sometimes the whole screen (or part of it) will go all wonky in that the text (actually everything) will disappear and there will be only scattered colors left behind. The actual functioning of the Finder is usually not affected - I could have shut the system down if I only got lucky enough to navigate blindly to the appropriate menu item.
Reinstalling the system does not help. (I have an iMac Core 2 Duo which I bought in about September of '06)
What should I do?

Your first priority is to ensure you have complete backups of everything from the internal drive in the iMac just in case your system is dying; it could be just the graphics system or it could be more serious. Once you have your backups, either call Apple for advice, take it to a reseller to have it fixed if it seems a reasonable cost or consider upgrading to a new iMac. Shame you are a few months beyond any AppleCare warranty.

  • Help!  My MacBook screen is freaking out!?

My 2-month old refurbished MacBook's screen is freaking out. A couple of days ago while I was working on it the screen went a bit blue and the whole screen began moving up & down very very fast -- the best description I can think of is that it looks like I need to adjust the hold on a tv screen. It only did that for a few seconds then the screen returned to normal. Yesterday it did the same thing 2-3 times except the screen didn't return to normal until I put it to sleep, closed up the MacBook then re-opened. This morning when I started it up the screen is already like this and won't return to normal at all. I've tried re-starting, zapping the PRAM, but no dice. I have a jpg and a video of it doing this crazy thing if it would help to see it. Any suggestions??
    Thanks in advance.
    Kristy

I'm not sure how to include it in the post here, but I have video & still pics of the screen. Since my original post I've had it into the Apple Store for repair 2 times (I only purchased the MacBook 4 months ago!?). The first time they replaced the display & logic board. The second time they replaced the inverter cable and display again. Each time I had no problem for a week or 10 days, then the trouble started up again. =( Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

  • 21.5 mid-2011 iMac screen keeps glitching out and then eventually goes black.

At the end of August 2011 I purchased a 21.5-inch iMac and just last week (8 or so months later) the screen started to glitch everywhere and then eventually turned black. It has been happening quite regularly and has become quite an issue. Before then it had been running perfectly, and we had had no problems at all. However when the screen goes black (as if it was asleep) you could still hear things playing in the background (such as the noise that the volume key makes when you press it on the keyboard). We have eliminated all possible interference problems (turned off: wifi, phone's, TV, lamps and even the fish pump) and have also had it tested by license technicians for software and hardware issues (which came back clean). So then they replaced the screen thinking that was the only other possibility, and when we brought it back home it started to do it again. I have no idea anymore and I was hoping that someone could tell me what might be going on, otherwise I will get it replaced under extend Apple Care warranty.
Thank you and the main specs are below:
    2.7Ghz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor
    4GB Ram
    1TB hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR5 memory

  • My iphone 4s screen turned freaked out before my eyes, changing all different colours, now it is blue and black along the right side with horizontal lines, and is flickering. I DIDN'T DROP IT.

I was just sitting on the couch scrolling through facebook, I closed out of that and went to open safari, when it spazzed out, for a few mintutes it looked like LSD vision, it was all different colours and flickering the whole time. I turned it off and on again, and plugged it into my computer and now the right side is nearly completely blue, and bleeds to the left side with horizontal lines, and it is still flickering. I just finished paying the **** thing off. I thought I'd get another year out of it. I have taken exemplary care of it and it hasn't left the case since the day I bought it. I haven't dropped it, there was no warning for the screen to start doing this. So my question is, is there an easy fix (I am about to restore and update it, and I already played around with the screen brightness), and if not, am I going to have to pay for the screen to be replaced, because I don't have that kind money.

Probably sounded funnier in your head.

  • My Ipad screen is freaking out...?

    Hi.
So, at completely random times, my Ipad screen is filled with blue static-looking lines. They move and usually outline whatever I'm doing on it. Sometimes during this it freezes, and turns itself off. It's getting really annoying. I've already tried turning it off, charging it, deleting some apps...could you help me?

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. DONT CONNECT YOUR DEVICE TO A COMPUTER WHILE DOING THIS.
if the problem continues perform a backup and restore
Go to settings>icloud>storage and back up>back up
after that preform a restore by going to
    general>reset>erase all content and settings
if the problem persists then go to apple and make an appointment before you go at the genius bar

  • Samsung Reality screen freaking out issue

My reality screen started freaking out a couple of weeks ago and wouldn't let the touchscreen operate properly, it didn't get wet. I had my service switched to another phone but I really want my Reality back. I shut it off, took the battery out and left it out overnight, didn't help. Leaving it off for several days has helped the touch screen but eventually it freaks again. What is the problem? Is it the digitizer, how can I replace just that myself ? (they're not expensive on eBay) how does it come off and get replaced?

    Hi bfizzy,
I feel your pain, is not fun to have a phone that fails to perform as expected. As indicated by glyde23 (thank you!) your phone includes a one year warranty and can be replaced within the warranty period if our technical support team is unable to resolve your phone's issues. Please visit the link below for details on the warranty replacement process.
    Certified Like-New Replacement Process
I would not recommend to replace screen yourself as this would void the manufacturer's warranty (if within 12 months of purchase).

  • Display on iMac freaking out

My wifes iMac (Intel 2.66 GHz/1 G Ram/ 20" display)has recently began to freak out with numerous blank blocks on the screen (up to 12) opening up when switching applications. It doesn't happen when working in an app, only switching between apps. The blocks can not be closed on the screen, they are frozen. You must shut the computer down and reboot to continue working. Sort of like Expose going nuts. Has anyone run into this situation? Any advise?

Unless this happens only when playing a video, you'll probably want to ask this question in either the iMac or Mac OS X forums since it's probably not a QuickTime problem per se.
    Regards.

Did you try resetting PRAM as a first step? Some display settings are stored in PRAM.

  • HELP!!! new iMac. screen shifts side to side and i can't use mouse when this happens.

i bought this imac back in january and have had nothing but problems since then with it. first my OS (lion 10.7.4) crashed or some **** where i got extremely slow and would give me the colored wheel of death so i take it to worst but where i bought it and they say its a corupt hard drive so its sent out. get it back, they say it whats the os system so they re-boot the os on to it. mean while i was having the same problem ive have from the beginning which was the screen would shake side to side when ever i would be doing something and the mouse locks up and i would have to wait for it to stop. this is VERY ANOYING!!! i took it to apple and they ran a series of stress tests on it and they couldnt even get it to produce it once while they had it. so now its STILL doing it!  can anyone please help me. im ready to go to apple and demand a new computer or punch someone in the face...

    I'm speaking from experience.
You're using a wireless Magic Mouse right?  Yeah, thought so.
I first noticed the problem on Lion (10.7.5) but that was also the time my Mighty Mouse or whatever that thing was called crapped out and I upgraded to the Magic Mouse.  I always thought the problem was with the OS.  My system is not supported by Mountain Lion (late 2006 model, the white one) so I did a system reinstall and stil had the issue.  Being stupid, I still attributed it to the OS but had my doubts about the mouse with all the silly swipes here and there and everywhere.  Until today.  I said enough of this garbage and switched off the mouse and plugged in a beat up wired Logitech.  Going on 4 hours now and not one screen shake.
The "iMac screen shake".  Not very well documented.  But **** if that isn't one frustrating mofo.  Seriously, how did I use this thing for many moons with the screen shaking every 3-5 minutes.  ***??   And by the way, to stop the screen from shaking while it's doing it, madly swipe back and forth on the magic mouse shell to take control back.  Man, I'm getting upset just thinking about this problem.  And the waste of $70 for the mouse.
And for what it's worth, I bought an iMac (2010) for my folks and I've noticed the problem on their machine too.  Yep, Magic Mouse.

  • 2009 27" iMac screen artifacts. Make iMac unusable, Please help

27" Late 09 iMac, Was running Mavericks and Mountain Lion, i7, 8gb Ram, ATI RadeonHD 4850 512mb
About 2 weeks ago i had a random issue where my screen was displaying some odd artifacts. I tried resetting everything, unplugging it, etc and finally out of no where it was back to normal.
Yesterday it started happening again but this time, I could not get rid of the artifacts. Let me explain what it is doing.
The screen at random times will have black spots, icons will be black, some are fine. If i open a menu, The menu will be so distorted that you cannot even read it. At times the mouse pointer will disappear and various areas. Its never the entire screen, only various area of the screen, like say the icons on the dock, or drop down menus, sometimes the entire page on the screen is black.
The issue is so bad that it makes my iMac unusable. The only way i am able to do anything is boot into safe mode BUT now after a few days, Its starting to happen in Safe Mode now.
I have done everything possible from doing a clean install of Mavericks, Totally formatting HD and going back to Mountain Lion. Unplugging all USB devices and HDs, PRAM reset, SMC reset. I have tried different resolutions, etc, etc. You name it i have tried it.
It took me almost 2 hours to install Mountain Lion and Mavericks because once the OS is done installing and you have to go thru the setup screens ( choose your country, your wireless, your apple ID, etc ) half of the screens were blacked out or distorted and you couldn't even see what it was asking you to do. I have to use voice over the entire time to select and enter all my information.
Everything on the iMac works perfectly fine, The problem is, You just can't see 75% of what your doing.
Since i am out of warranty, What can i do? I assume Apple will not fix this issue for free and i assume its a hardware issue? From what i have read everywhere my guess is the graphics card is going out.
Can anyone suggest any fixes? or what the best thing is to do? I have no idea what it will cost to fix and then if its even worth putting the money.
Any help or advice would be great, Thanks.

Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode at least 2-3 times back to back, if errors occur then you have a hardware problem. This means it is in need of repair and there is nothng we can do to help on this forum.

  • OMG freaking out please help!!  Installer won't install..Disk Utility gone?

Newer mac user here with very little osx experience. First post on the forums really hoping you can help.
I have a couple issues right now. First of all, lately when I try to install apps nothing happens. More specifically, when I click on the .pkg file nothing happens. The screen kind of flashes (it doesn't really flash, but I don't know how else to describe it) like it wants to do something, but then.....nothing. This has happened recently with both a divx codec I downloaded from divx.com and also with neooffice. I have tried dumping the neooffice download in the trash and redownloading and trying to reinstall and it does the same thing everytime.....nothing.
Second....can someone tell me exactly what is supposed to be in the applications/utility folder? I thought there was a disk utility program in there that would allow me to reset permissions, but I can't find it!! I can't find it using finder either!! I am freaking out a little bit here and any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you for your help in advance!

Sounds like you trashed a few things from your Utilities folder. For details on restoring one or more missing pieces, see my post at:

  • IMac screen went to grey! Help!

Hi there everyone. Hope this can be resolved without painful repairs process, etc...coz I need to finish a project by Friday!
I was working on my new iMac, and then all out of a sudden the screen went grey and there's nothing on it (some people mention icons, but I have nothing, just grey screen). What is it? What can I do???
I have a new iMac (couple months old) running Leopard, and I was using iPhotoiMovieGarage Band at that time, plus a couple of other programms running at the background.... if this is of any help.

Hi, I was doing nothing special - working with the slideshow in iPhoto and iMovie, and having a few other programmes open at the same time, just as I said in the post. Then as I clicked on something to switch windows, it went grey.
It is now back working, but at the time of the post I did try to restart it several times, and it returned to the grey screen - hence the post. I've given up that night, but in the morning I launched it again (unplugged from the socket, plugged in again, and disconnected all the external drives just in case) and it just worked.
