My iMac screen went pixilated then went black

Hey!
So earlier tonight my 27" iMac (2009) went pixilated (green, yellow, blue, white small pixels) then the screen went black, but the computer was still running. I shut it down and turned it back on and I didn't have a problem until recently. After clicking play on a video on Facebook, the pixels returned and the screen went black again. I then proceeded to shut the computer down, but when I turned it back on, this is what I saw (refer to picture, sorry it's upsidedown)
The lines eventually disappeared along with the Apple logo, but the screen remained white for at least five minutes. I restarted my mac again, but the lines returned and the screen stayed white. That was around ten minutes ago and the screen is still white. What's wrong here?
Also, I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion about two months or so ago from Snow Leopard (either 10.8 or 10.8.1) if that's important at all.

Exact same thing has just happened to me! I believe I clicked on a facebook video as well; same pinkish strips and same white screen. My life and business is in this computer!

  • My ipad will not turn on and is charged, i have also tried a reset and the screen flashes and then goes black.

My ipad will not turn on and is charged.  I have also tried to reset my ipad by holding in the off/on button and the home button at the same time , but it did not work.  The screen flickered a couple times and then went black.  Is there anything else I can try?

    Hi,
Does anything appear on the screen at all, e.g: Apple Logo etc?
You may also find the information here useful: iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

  • Why does my iMac screen keep switching off / going black?

After about one half hour of use my new iMac screen switches off / goes black.
The screen can be switched on by pressing the power button on the back on the machine a few times. It remains lit for about 20 seconds. This can comntinue for about half an hour when it stops switching off or when I give up.
I have conrtacted Apple but they have been unable to solve the problem.
The machine is just not fit for purpose as I cannot use it for work.
It appears from the internet that this is a recurring imac problem.
Please, what am I to do?

Call AppleCare (number is in the manual) and then request to speak to Customer Service. Be patient, organized and articulate and they will transfer you. When you get to speakt to someone then explain your problem and ask for their help. You should have all your receipts, invoices, trouble ticket numbers etc available for reference.
You can also take to an Apple Store in Spain, while this may not be convenient at least then an Apple person can see the machine and work on it.

  • Intel Imac Screen Fuzz, Blinking then Black

I've been running windows xp on an Intel based Imac24 since October. Within a week I began having screen issues. The screen would start blinking and the colors would become fuzzy and pixelate a bit. Then the screen goes to black. After a re-boot it is normal for sometimes up to two weeks. It's seems completely random. I've talked to Applecare several times and because it's happening when running windows XP, they can't seem to help.
I did a hardware test and everything came out OK. I don't know if its a graphics card or hardware issue or whether it has something to do with Bootcamp. Anyone else with similar problems? I have upgraded to OS10.5 and all the Windows drivers are up to date.

"So this means my computer IS actually booting up, it's just the screen is not coming on! Now what?"
    Hi debdesign!
Unfortunately, the black screen is simply a sign that the update didn't go through. An independently failed display at that same time would be quite a spooky coincidence:)
Refer to this Apple Support article: About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs
If it didn't update, then the Restoration CD needs to be tried again, or needs to be redone. I know you don't want to hear that, but if it didn't install, there's no other conclusion.
Think it through for a minute. It's most likely the case that your update didn't do the update. Also, your firmware restoration didn't go through.
Rather than blaming this on the warranty having just expired, it appears rather likely that there is a flaw in either your download or installation procedure. Read all you can, figure out what the weak link is, and correct it.
If you can't figure it out, you'll be paying a repair shop to do so for you.
    Suggestions for you:
The update instructions include: "Quit all other open applications."
Turn off AirPort. AirPort is an application.
"I came to work and made the "Firmware restoration" cd."
You need to make it using a Mac. Best of luck:)

  • Screen flashes and then goes black after CPU load

Yesterday morning I upgraded my MacBook Pro 6,2 (Mid 2010) to OS X Lion. Since then I've been having issues while performing CPU-not-too-intensive tasks. Every once in a while my screen flashes for a split second and then turns completely black. The MBP is unresponsive so I'm forced to shut it down using the power button.
At first i though this was a Lion issue. However, it has happened again just now while I was on Windows through BootCamp. I was checking my e-mail and performing some other mundane tasks for about an hour, and then while trying to copy some files to an external Hard Drive my screen flashed and went black.
    Hardware issue then??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's already happened 4-5 times right when I pressed Cmd+D to bookmark a site on Safari. What the heck? That isn't even a CPU load.

  • IMac screen turns white, then won't restart

    24" iMac running 10.6.8
Just installed MacKeeper software and did a "Fast Cleanup". It says my system is running "excellent". Then, one day later, I am on the internet and the screen goes white. Pulled the plug as that was the only way I could get it to shut down, restarted, screen is now 50% white (frosted) but I can see the type. As I am talking to MacKeeper on the phone, it goes completely white again. Third time try to restart and button won't even turn it on. Fourth time restart (as above)  and have the 50% white screen again. Long enough this time to figure out my Apple ID and password and type in this question.
Do you think this is software related (MacKeeper)? Or is this my first Mac to ever have a real problem.

Didn't get a response here, so I read some other similar posts. I've tried everything: rebooting to safe mode, uninstalling MacKeeper, and running disk utility (which said it could find no problems).
Any other suggestions out there folks?

  • IMac screen briefly freezes, then resumes

    I have a late 2012 iMac running OS X 10.9.
Recently, I've started experience an issue where the screen will briefly freeze for about 5 seconds. It is frozen - no mouse movement, no keyboard interaction, and graphical animations stop playing. However, the computer is still working since music continues to play, and I can SSH in. After a few seconds, everything resumes. Interestingly, if I am clicking while its frozen (such as on icons or menus by accident), those actions have been performed, or if I type, the text appears.
Effectively, the screen has just frozen briefly, but the rest of the system is OK and responding -- its just not being sent back to the screen.
This happens perhaps 2-3 times each day. It is not linked to Time Machine backups.
Does anybody know how to fix this? I have tried restaring to no effect.
    Thanks so much,

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • HT1688 My iphone 5 screen is flickering then going black and becoming unresponsive.

I just bought this phone, it is up to date on software AND it has had a waterproof lifeproof case on it since day one. When the battery is low the screen flickers uncontrollably and fades to black or white, there are a bunch of sideways lines on it. This phone has NOT been dropped or gotten wet.

    Was this phone ever jalbroken?
If restoring as new, without using a backup, didn't help, there is certainly a hardware problem that only replacement can fix.  Your warranty is void unless you return to the USA.  Short of that, finding a local independent iPhone repair center would be your only option

  • I have a 32in 1080p Sony Bravia. and a early 2009 iMac 20in. i bought a mini Dvi to HDMI adaptor. And i have the HDMI cable. but every time i connect my iMac with my Tv my iMac screen turns blue then back to the desktop.

i also click on detect displays and nothing happens.

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Display there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the TV hooked up to the MacBook and both screens working. Do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.

  • G5 gets grey screen with logo then goes black, won't boot from any disk

Won't boot from any disk, already changed VRAM battery, no success. tried hardware disk once and ran a full scan, said error with Video, but now won't boot at all with any disk. Screen is choppy also(have pic). Thinking video graphics card? Not sure. Need help!

Hi bribiel, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It certainly sounds like the Video card from the little info we have, & that can certainly cause it to fail to bootup.

  • 3gs battery went down then went back up by a lot?!?!

So I have a bout a 3 hour usage with on and off ipod and 3g usage. About 5 hours of stand by. Phone was about 18% battery left for a total of about 5-6 hours of it being last charged, and the phone jumped to 25% battery life than to 50% out of nowhere. Has this happened to anyone before? This is pretty weird I think. I'm happy I got more battery but is it a glitch or hardware error? THX.

Similar thing just happened to me, check out my post.

  • IMac Screen intermittently goes black

ust recently my iMac screen has started to go black after a few minutes. Usually this happens after my iMac wakes up and I've started to run an application. I can't seem to get the screen to return to normal without rebooting the machine, which seems to fix the problem. I've already verified and repaired all permissions. I've verified the disc and no problems were fund. I've called Apple support and was told it might be a video card. I've run the hardware tests, both short and extensive, and no problems were found.
I have two questions: any suggestions, and can the geniuses at my local bar replace the video card if that's determined to be the problem, or will my iMac have to be sent somewhere?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Video card issues usually require a swap out of the logicboard because the card is usually soldered/glued to the motherboard. They would likely need to order the logicboard.
Have you checked the RAM to be sure that it is seated properly in the slots?

  • Upgrading Imac after 24 hrs went to quit install then went to black screen

I was reinstalling OS X--after 24 hrs went to quit install then went to black terminal screeen--any ideas and comp will not restart

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there.

  • Screen froze when closing Safari then went black. Am I in trouble?

Have had this iMac since 2004, NEVER had any problems. Went to close window from Safari, screen froze, wouldn't turn off. Had to unplug, when I turned it back on the screen reloaded with the Apple icon then went black. Am I looking at a dead machine?

    1) You should run disk utility from your install dvd.
          a) fix the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    2) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
         is being checked.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    3) Another way to correct filesystem problems is into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key
has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar.
    4) Run hardware diagnostics.  It's good for a sanity check.
