My IMac shuts down when transfering files to a Hard Drive through USB

Hi all,
I have been having trouble with my IMac. It's over 3 years old and I didn't actualized the operative system. Everytime I try to transfer files from the computer to a hard drive or pen drive (through USB), the computer shuts down. Sometimes it restarts, sometimes it gets shut. I wonder what's the issue and if getting a newer operate system (Snow Leopard maybe) will help.
Thanks

  • Mac shuts down when I turn my external hard drive

    Hello,
I installed Yosemite 2 days ago, and something when wrong right away: when I turned off my LaCie external hard drive, my 27 inches iMac immediately shuts down (I tried a couple of times), to restart a few seconds later. A message lets me know if I want to send a notice of the problem to Apple (which I did), and then everything is fine. Except its not, and whenever I turn off that hard drive (that is connected through thunderbolt), same thing happens. It never happened with the previous OS, so I hate myself right now for moving onto Yosemite.
Does anyone when through the same thing, and possibly has a fix ? Thanks.

Hmmm. Did you ever install any external software (i.e. some LaCie installer disk) or something? That's my guess, that you have 3rd party software (which is totally not necessary) which is incompatible with Yosemite and is causing a kernel panic. The solution would be to uninstall the software - it is never necessary to use 3rd party software to use a hard disk, and it can cause system instability and data loss.
If you don't know how find this out, you could download and run a program called 'etrecheck' (just Google it) and post the output here.

  • MDD freezes when transferring files to new Hard Drive.

I am using a G4 MDD Dual Processor Tower with 1 GB DDR SDRAM, Dual 1 GHz and an 80 GB hard Drive on an ATA/100 controller, using a cable select cable (OEM). I just installed an additional PATA Western Digital WES-WD3200JB 320 GB hard drive. Both drives are on the ATA/100 and on Cable Select mode. The 80GB hard drive (which has the system installed on it) was originally installed in the slave position (and still is). I zeroed the drive and did a PRAM reset before I partitioned and formatted the drive.
I have had freeze up troubles when I try to transfer files from the old 80GB Hard Drive to this new 320 GB one. I have tried transferring files from a DVD to this new Hard Drive without a problem. I have tried transferring that same load of files from the new Hard Drive to the old one without a problem. The only time it seems to freeze up is when I try to transfer a large number of files from the old Hard Drive to the new one. The problem doesn’t occur with large files, just with a large number of files. For example, I have transferred a single 917MB file without a problem, but when I try to transfer a folder that has 158 items totaling 38.6 MB, that is when my computer freezes up. However, I have frequently transferred folders containing a few (under 20) files that are under 5 MB without a problem.
I have considered putting the new drive on the ATA-66 controller instead of the ATA-100 (as several Apple forum posts recommend), but I would rather figure out why the freeze up occurs in only this specific set of circumstances.
Any theories on what is causing this freeze up, or suggestions on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ATA doesn't share a bus very nicely, you can always put the WD 320 over to ATA/100 or do that now, but yes, isolate them.
You may have directory problem or bad sectors, so eliminating that would be another step.
Some people even recommend zeroing a new drive right off the bat.
PATA should not have the problems of SATA, but you might want to look into whether this drive has come up in other problems. OWC includes it in one of the FW cases also.
And you could move your OEM to FW case, can't imagine continuing to use the OEM drive at this point (they were slow and had only 2MB cache then, I use mine for an emergency FW backup system).

  • IMac shuts down when using Safari 2.0.4

My iMac shuts down when I visit certain websites such as Pogo or video sites. Took it to the Apple store and of course the problem wouldn't replicate there. They kept it to check out the scripts and logs to see if they could find a problem - without success; although they did suggest my house is haunted. Brought it home and it quit again.
We thought perhaps we were getting interference from other wireless devices and unplugged our cordless phone which worked for a day. The computer always turns back on so its more of an annoyance than a real problem, but I'm baffled.
It also happened once when I was downloading from the iTunes store, but is most prevalent with Safari.
We have wireless internet connected via ethernet to an Airport Express.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi Barry -
Yes I do live near a ghost town (kinda) - Virginia City, NV. And I did tell any unwanted visitors to leave.
Actually, in the last year, they have replaced the Super drive, power supply, inverter and logic board. The only reason I'm not thinking power issues is that it only happens when I'm in Safari or iTunes. I would use Firefox except I've got java issues with that. I can (and do) use the machine for other things all day long without problems. I can use Safari all day long as long as I'm not playing on Pogo or certain video sites. Maybe Pogo is haunted?
It also doesn't happen on my husband's iMac on the other side of the house. Is there something that could cause enough interference to actually make the machine shut down? Oh, the antennae for the satellite TV and internet are on the roof directly above me, if that would have anything to do with it.
    Thanks for your help.

  • IMac Shutting Down when DVD player is in use

So, I know a lot of folks have been mentioning the new iMacs heating up and shutting down. I'm managing my heat issues okay to this point, and I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign every day.
But - the thing keeps shutting down when I try to play a DVD!
Anyone? This one has me stumped.

You are connecting the mini display port on the 2010 iMac to WHAT to try and get TDM to work?

  • Imac shuts down when not in use

I purchased my 21.5" imac July 9, 2011 with Snow Leopard. No problems for 1 month. Then about August 12th or so, my imac started to mysteriously "shut down" when not in use. I'll be working on it, then get up to go pour myself a cup of coffee or something...then I come back to my computer that has now shut off. It is NOT asleep...it is OFF. So I turn it back on and it is fine. This has happened a few times now within a week. Anyone else have this problem?
By the way, I am now running Lyon, as of August 18th. When the imac shut down, I was usually viewing photos or on the web.
    thanks!

First thing I would try is to reset the SMC, it can help with power related problems. Shut down the Mac and unplug everything including the power. Press and hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the computer but be careful not to press the power button as you are plugging it in. Wait a few seconds and turn it on. Hopefully it won't happen again. There is always Apple Support. Don't let the problem persist until your free phone tech support has expired (3 months). I would also recommend using the iMac with an UPS, and at the very least, a high quality surge protector.
If you have MS Word or a similar word processor you could try enabling the autosave feature and set it to 1 minute intervals. Keep a document open and if you come back to the computer and it has shut down, you can look at the last time the document was updated and know what time the comptuer turned itself off. It could be useful in diagnosing the problem.

  • IMac shuts down when a GPU incentive app starts

    Hi guys,
My iMac a 24" EMC 2267 A1225 (Snow Leopard), is shutting down when i open an application that makes use of the graphics card. It started as a random shut down symptom for example when i was starting Adobe Lightroom. Now it shuts down once it boots on the login screen.
I booted into Safe Mode and tried to push the machine to its limits by opening many apps but the machine is not restarting so i am suspecting that this is an issue with the GPU.
I already installed iStat menus and the only thing that worries is me is the Northbridge 70 and NorthBridge Heatsink that goes up to 70-75 Celsious degrees.
I took it already to an authorised reseller in Cyprus and they have told me that this is a logicboard issue, i do not beleive this and a 700 euro replace is not an option for this 3 year old machine.
Please post your ideas on how to debug further in order to be sure before i go for a GPU replacement.

You may be in luck if you can find one over there...

  • IMac shuts down when commanded to print

A friend of mine got a new Samsung color laser and when he tries to print his computer immediately shuts down. I uninstalled/reinstalled the printer software, ran FSCK which fixed some disk directory problems (probably from the unexpected shutdowns) and ran Cocktail, which did the cron scripts and cleared out the caches as well as repairing permissions. It seemed to be working normally, but he just called to tell me that the machine shut down again when he tried to print a document.
Anyone have any ideas about what's going on and what to do about it? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
    PowerMac G5 2.0 DP   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Thanks for all the help.
I went back to his house tonight and we figured it out. I reset the SMU and installed the latest drivers, but the problem persisted. It was a little warm in the room, so we turned on a small fan on his desk next to the iMac. The next time we tried to print, we noticed that the speed of the fan dropped for a moment at the same time the iMac shut down. I then looked to where the equipment was plugged in and found one of those battery backup power strips with the printer plugged in to one of the backed up outlets. I moved it to one of the non-backed up outlets and the problem disappeared. I'm thinking that the printer was pulling too much power from the system and the iMac was shutting down due to low voltage. Just proves you have to check everything.

  • IMac shuts down when i try to log into some user accounts

Installed Lion on my mid 2010 iMac.
Now when I log into one of my accounts it starts to log in, then decides it doesn't want to and restarts the machine.
Guest account works fine, and when I made another account that works fine as well.  Just keeps shutting down when I try to log into my main account.

Thanks for that.  It looks like it is mail causing the problem.  Took mail out of launch at start up and seems to be working ok now.
All I have to do now is make sure I remember to turn off mail before I shut down my computer.

  • Imac shuts down when loading new music or new software

My Imac shuts down (intermittently) when loading music or software. Logic board was replaced I believe because fire wire connection was intermittently not working (1st year).
Hard drive was replaced recently (Dec 2010). Now SuperDrive and Cable (Optical Data, Flexible) was JUST replaced. But when I was on my third CD loading it shut down 3 times.
Has anyone had this problem and know of a solution?
    Works fine otherwise
Apple Store has run software on it and everything seems to pass.
It seems to shut down less when firewire is disconnected (back up hard drive LaCie) but still occasionally shuts down.

I have plugged my computer in three different places over the years and have had the same problem. I have also brought the power cord with computer for work and I am assuming they would have picked that up when they run their tests on the computer.
Could it be the keyboard (never brought in) or WiFi connection (don't think they would plug in anything)? A combination of this with load software/music?
Thing is the computer works perfectly otherwise. It is only does this when loading software or music from a cd/dvd.

  • Why does my computer slow down when I connect an external hard drive

I've been using a 2TB western digital external hard drive with USB connection.  It was working fine, but once it was up to 1.95TB, my macbook pro froze up.  Looking at my activity monitor,  my memory dropped to nil once the hard drive was connected.  The same hard drive works fine on my PC and I have no issues accessing all the files, just not on my mac. Any suggestions?

    Thanks Eustace,
When I disconnect the external hard drive, and look at the activity monitor, the memory climbs back up to about 4 to 6GB free.
    I have software system version: OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)

  • Transferring files from portable hard drives

I currently have an external hard drive formatted for a PC. I recently bought a Mac and an external hard drive that is formatted specifically for a Mac. I want to transfer the files from the PC external hard drive to the one formatted for Mac but when I hook the Mac hard drive to my PC it won't acknowledge it without me reformatting it for a PC. Is there a way for me to get the files from one hard drive to the next without reformatting the hard drives themselves?

I have a similar problem... my external hard drive, PC formated, is one that can be connected and media viewed through your TV. I want to keep all my "pc" files on the hard drive and add MAC (.avi, .mp3, .mp4, etc.) files to the hard drive to free up space on my laptop.
As you said, I can read/copy files from the hard drive to my MAC but cannot copy from my MAC to the hard drive. Will the software you speak of allow me to copy those files? If not, must I burn all from my files to a disc, reformat the hard drive, and then copy back?

  • IMac shuts down when trying to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard

My iMac, purchased in November of '07, came installed with Tiger but also came with a Leopard OS update disk. When trying to upgrade to Leopard last week, every time I rebooted off the disk the computer would run for a minute in the gray screen and then suddenly shut off with no warning message. I checked HD in disk utilities, repaired my permissions and tried again with the same results. I've got 30 gigs of free space and 4 gigs of RAM which should be plenty. I talked to Apple support who walked me through the installation procedure with the same results and ended up shipping me a new install disk which came today. I am getting the same shut down on reboot with their replacement disk. Apple actually sent me two white disks. The first is labeled "For Mac Computers, Mac OSX Install disc 1" The second is labeled "MacBook, Mac OSX Install Disc 2" Since the second disc is label "MacBook" is it possible they sent me the wrong set of discs?
    Thanks

    rk87,
Thanks for replying. I have a 500 gig hard drive which yields a 465gig usable capacity, so, at 30 Gigs available, I don't have 10% of the drive free. This may be an issue, but my more immediate problem is that I can't get the install disk to boot up at all.
I called apple support again see what I could find out about the install disks which wouldn't work. The support guy seemed like he had a lot of knowledge about the system and suggested trying the Tiger install disk (that came with the machine) to see if it would boot up, which it did. After that success, I tried the Leopard update disk in another iMac I have at home and it worked as it should. Since the disk worked fine on the other mac, the guy at tech support speculated that there is some sort of hardware issue causing the install shut down on the computer in question.
His speculation was about the memory installed in the machine which might be the issue. I had bought the computer from an Apple Authorized store here in town who upgraded the RAM to 4GIGs using third-party memory. Even though the memory seems to have functioned properly for the past year, apple support says that there could be some sort of incompatibility with the third party product causing the install disk not to work.
Apple support told me about running a memory diagnostic off of the Tiger install disk by rebooting with the disk in the computer and hold down the "D" key. After I got off the phone I ran the test which turned out to take an hour in its long version. The test indicated no problems, but apple had told me that it might not be totally conclusive. At this point, I'm taking the computer back to the store where I bought it and will let them figure it out.

After updating the files, when I try to move them back to their folders, every time I try to scroll down to select the folder to move them to, the app shuts down.
