My iMac sometimes doesnt turn on

sometimes I can't turn my iMac on. I press the power button and nothing happens. I try over and over and nothing occurs. Then I can change to a different port on the power strip and itll turn on (???) Why does this happen? This is a brand new computer. I don't want to have issues already.

This shows there is a power issue, it can be anything from a bad circuit where you have it plugged in to a damaged power supply.

  • Delayed Turn on/sometimes doesnt turn on at all

Lately, my computer hasnt been responding to pressing the power button. Either it doesnt power on at all for hours on end, or at times, after I press the power button, it takes like 5 to 10 mins to power. Sometimes when i put it to sleep, it turn off completely, even when fully charged. If I were trying to turn it on, and it didnt turn on and if i were to press the power button twice or three times, when the computer finallyt turns on, after a while it would turn on and off, on and off, various times.

    Hi sunnyDrizzle,
Unfortunately this summary of events sounds like a hardware issue. You should take your computer into an apple store and see what they can do.

  • Imac does not turn off.

    hello,
I have an imac, running on os x lion. u know how, when you click on shutdown, it shows the white screen. sometimes my imac does not turn off and keep showing it. could you please tell me what i can do to solve this problem.
    thanks

The safe boot more or less resets system files.
When it is something in the hardware:
1.do the Pram and the SMC resets:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    2. shutdown the mac and startup while holding the ALT(option) key: choose the Recovery Disk, from the window choose Disk Utility, select the Lion disk, choose "repair disk".
When it is not a hardware problem:
    3. List the applications you installed in the last 6 months, also the ones from the Appstore.
    4. List the plugins (extensions) you have in Safari.

  • IMac does not turn back on from sleep mode

    Hi all,
I've having a problem sometimes that my iMac won't turn back on after I put it into a sleep mode. This does not happen everytime. After  the machine does not turn back on, the only workaround is to unplug the power cable and connect it back. Then I'm able to turn on the iMac. After the machine boots up, and I will get the crash report said that the machine does not turn it off properly.
I tried to reset the SMC before and it did not resolve the problem.
    Any idea?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • IMac won't turn on after power cut

When my iMac is unexpectedly turned off, ether at the wall or during a power cut, it won't then come back on immediately.  Sometimes it will come back on after an hour, sometimes after a couple of days.  Anyone know why this is? There is no logic to it. I've tried all the trouble shooting stuff; the resetting SMC for example. And I've got a surge protector. I've also taken it into an Apple store, a round trip of 3 hours, twice already over the past couple of months.  But after doing some diagnostic tests on it they can find nothing wrong.  Also, when they go to turn it on, it fires up immediately.  I was told that unless they experience the problem themselves they can't do anything.  Which means I'm forever taking it in to them, during this problem, on the off chance it may still be a problem when I get there.  It's very infuriating. Help!!!

Great advice.  And I'll definitely do that - need to get my Mac back on and working before that however.

  • G5 iMac Will Not Turn On - Power Supply Diagnosis?

My A1145 20" iSight PPC G5 iMac will not turn on - it doesn't respond to the power button. It had been shut down for a few days, I turned on the power and it booted up as normal, the desktop appeared and I was about to open the web browser when it suddenly went dead; the screen immediately turned off with no warning or noise. There is no fan or disk noise coming from it when the power lead is plugged in, just a very, very faint electronic hum from inside.
From reading various webpages, it seems possible that the power supply could have failed. Is there a simple way that I can diagnose this before deciding whether to attempt to replace it myself or not? I understand that there should be some diagnostic LEDs which could help identify a problem - I've removed the surround from the iMac and peeled back the black EMI film below the display but I'm not sure for what or where I should be looking (they seem to be easier to find on the 17" models).
Whilst I know a repair might not be cost-effective on such an old machine, I have 220GB of photographs, documents and music on it - none of which is backed-up - so I am very keen to get it working and backed-up as soon as possible.
Could anyone suggest how to diagnose the problem?

    Hi there:
My experience with Macintosh computers has not included the G5 iMac even though I almost got one to replace a failed-under-AppleCare iMac G4 17" 1.25GHz after three/four major failures and no local support.
...So, I think you may be able to pull the hard disk drive out of that computer and see if an external enclosure could allow you access those files IF the drive spins up at all. Sometimes odd things happen, and the G5 iMac had some history of capacitor and other failures that could be a problem. I see there are a few free information guides here that may be helpful: http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_G5
If the battery on the logic board was dead, but the computer kept in running condition by leaving it plugged in, once the computer was left unplugged for a time then the device may fail to start. There is a way to reset the power management chip (different names for same idea as technology moved forward) and that could help in the process of troubleshooting most power related issues in the PPC Macs of later G3/G4/G5 design.
There are troubleshooting items of interest in here http://www.apple.com/support/imac/g5/ ie: what to do when your computer won't turn on...
Sorry to not be of direct help in this matter.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 24" imac won't turn on

I was on the computer browsing the net, all of a sudden it turned off. I tried rebooting but it still won't turn on, only the light stays on. help

Sounds like a power shortage, where you aren't supplying enough power to power the iMac.
Try turning off some things and retry.
Maybe it's a bad power cable connector. If you narrow it down to this, contact an Apple Genius.

  • IMac G5 not turning on

    Hi everyone,
I have a 2 year old iMac G5 (17 inch) and I was gone at a wedding this past weekend. When I got back home, my iMac would not turn on. I tried resetting the surge protector, even plugging it directly into an outlet that I know works. Something is wrong with my beloved Mac and I need some help (I'm typing this from a nasty windoze laptop).
    TIA

Well, I stumbled across a fix for my problem, merely by accident!

  • IMac 7,1 turning internal screen off while watching a movie via output (second display), possible?

iMac 7,1 turning internal screen off while watching a movie via output (second display), is it possible with Lion?

Actually, Plex does the best job by placing a black background to the internal iMac screen it's called Blanking.
However that does not turn off the backlit which is very bright on the iMac 24" also the internal screen will draw more power that way.   As you probably know running bootcamp you can turn off the internal screen while watching a movie on the external.  This isn't a hardware limitation, I hope Lion has this feature.

  • Magic mouse doesnt turn on.

Magic mouse doesnt turn on. The green light doesnt light up, Have changed batteries. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
    Thanks

Is there a possibility the batteries are not really fresh and fully charged?  It may be you purchased batteries that were too old in the store.  Your store may be able to verify they have retained a strong voltage (1.5 volt required for regular alkaline batteries and 1.2 for rechargeable).  Old batteries slowly lose their voltage even when not in use.

  • I replaced my lcd screen after my ipod doesnt turn on

my Lcd screen was damaged so i replaced it with new lcd screen after that my ipod doesnt turn on?

Send it back to the repairer, most likely the connections are not properly re-install, we cant solve hardware problems here.

  • Ipod doesnt turn on?

i connected my i pod to the computer when i was installing the itunes and it started to get hot and the lcd display slowly faded and turned off, and doesnt turn back on. tried to charge it and nothing happened, i also tried to reconnected to the computer and nothing happened.

A common problem which could have resulted in this, is a power spike going through the USB port to the iPod.
When iTunes looks for a connected iPod during installation, it could happen that a power spike occurs.
That is why you are advised not to connect your iPod when installing or updating iTunes. It says so in the manual.
Apple used to have a lot of those problems with previous iPod moddels and thus added that advice in the manual to cover their ***** when it happens again.
    Good luck with your iPod!
