My iMac started doing weird stuff

My mac started doing weird stuff. Not sure how to explain, have video but that option is grayed out for me. It's making repeated dings like input error, there is a gray box that runs thru my applications and other windows. if I click in the top tool bar it opens and then chases thru all the dropdown menus. Weird. Can anyone assist? HELP!

Hello jtoddarmstrong,
It sounds like you might have VoiceOver enabled on your Mac.  You can disable it using these steps:
Turning VoiceOver on and off
You can turn VoiceOver on and off at any time; you don’t have to restart your computer or log in again.
Here are ways to turn VoiceOver on or off:
Press Command-F5. If VoiceOver is on, pressing Command-F5 turns it off.
Use the Universal Access pane of System Preferences.

  • Windows 8 - SC6 started doing weird things, not working correctly

Windows 8 and CS6 - Liquifying tool not working and and actions not working correctly, back ground screen flickers and changes color and does weird things. I have done a complete D&R and it does the same thing. Someone with the same problem suggested a D&R and deactivate, then reinstall and reactivate, could this possibly work? if so, how would you do that? Thanks

Yes, one I can think of. Get the make and model of your video card and head over to the card manufacturer's website.
Check for and install the latest drivers for your card.
Also see if changing the settings of your GPU helps. Uncheck everything (OpenCL Anti-alias 30 bit displays) and start at Basic. then work your way up to Normal and Advanced.

  • Mac Pro doing weird stuff at boot !!!

    Hi
I bought my mac pro just 3 months back.
    now its not booting up...
i started facing this problem maybe 2 months back.
basically i used it for a month with no issues and then suddenly one fine day it decided to not boot up.
i tried everything from all the resets to disconnecting everything except the monitor n keyboard n mouse,
but still nothing. there were 2 red lights on inside. one at the top on the vertical board and one on the lower board.
then after 15 mins of trying it started up.
so i sent it to apple service center as i have apple care.
they checked n said that it was the way my ram was put in (funny part here is that the mac pro itself told me to put the ram in that order when i first put it in)
so i got it back n it started working fine for a few days.
then again like last time it didnt boot up.
same red lights and no boot for sometime n then boot...
then a new thing started up....the fans started running at really high speeds.
they go on n off....speed up slow down....erratically...
but mac boots fine n works fine.
i did a apple hardware test n got a 4sns error....i checked online for it and didnt really find the exact error definition anywhere, but got to know that basically a 4sns error is a sensor error.
so i sent it back to service center.
this time i made them boot it infront of me...and it booted up perfectly...
so i left it with them to test it properly...
they called me 2 days later n said that there's nothing wrong with the machine n that they didnt even get the 4sns error....
they also told me that it must be a wiring issue in my house...earthing stuff..
i got it back again n tried to boot it but exactly the same thing like last time.
no boot at the beg, then boot with fans behaving erratically...
so i decided to buy a new ups and also check the machine at all the other points in my house....same thing again...
now i dont think its possible that every electrical point in my house is wired wrong...
so i spoke to the tech guy at the service center n he told me to take out the extra 4gb ram that i had added 3 months back when i bought the mac.
i did that but same thing...fans speeding up n down...
so i spoke to him again....well now he's sending a tech to my house to see what is really happening...
im depressed....n im seriously dissappointed with apple..
mac pro's are not supposed to do this...
so much of my work is suffering...
    please help n advise...!!!

I saw poeple with undersized UPS have trouble so the VA rating.
Some outlets are still part of a larger circuit, and you don't want a windows A/C or fridge also pulling. And of course home wiring, grounding, etc.
Your UPS if APC, Cyberpower or good name will tell you if there is a ground fault.
Did you ever test wtih just the new RAM in the proper DIMM slots?
Wait for a tech. I'm glad I could get an electrician to wire some outlets. And I much prefer building my own PCs and doing my own servicing.
The SMC RESET method keeps changing, but unplugging everything, all cables, then I would hit power button for 10 seconds. Wait. a minute, then reconnect the power, kb/mouse and video cable and power up. On a PC removing the CMOS battery (PRAM battery) for 15 minutes too.
I worry that travel and carrying that something can loosen up, even RAM DIMMs or battery or something.
"RAM was put in funny" though sounds suspecious. You did it by the booklet (by the book) and according to the RAM Utility guide instructions.
Apple has a service diagnostic and maybe it is the cpu daughter card.
You only need one DIMM to boot. Might go through some trial and error of one DIMM in one of the slots.
Please list what you can - something like:

  • Windows does weird stuff under Boot Camp

I know this sounds like a Boot Camp question, but I'm pretty sure I'm better off here. Allow me to explain:
I use Mac and Windows equally on my MacBook Pro, but on occasion, I will load up Windows through Boot Camp and everything will start going crazy. By that, I mean that when Task Manager is brought up, almost all the background programs are running (even ones which don't normally run). In addition, the System background item is running around 30-50% of the memory. All of these things together causes my system to bog at 100% usage.
I assume this is Windows conflicting with hardware in some way, because this isn't a typical problem with Windows XP (not that I know of anyway). Here are a few additional facts I recently realized which might help to solve this problem:
    1. When this happens, I try to shut off the computer to no avail. Explorer hangs up, then tries to shut down, then says it can't be shut down. After hitting the "End Now" button, the computer hangs on an empty screen (meaning you can see my background, you can see my cursor, but I can't access anything...Task Manager included).
    2. The last time this happened was right after I disconnected my USB ported external hard drive.
    3. I am running NTFS-3g with MACFuse (or whatever it is that allows you to write to the Windows drive on the Mac side) as well as rEFIt (the boot system which allows for triple+ OS booting through Boot Camp)
Usually when this weird phenomenon happens, I have to boot up the Mac side of my computer (which complains that the Windows partition is "still running" and can't mount it) and then boot back into the Windows side (this is a sketchy solution at best).
I'll pose this question on the Boot Camp support board as well in case it's inappropriate here. Please help! This isn't exactly crippling my system (no damage has been done as far as I can tell) but it's really #%@&#@$!% annoying!

I believe NTFS-3g is how the Mac drive recognizes the NTFS format (it's just a more specific name). I could be wrong on this, but I recently formatted my hard drive and had to re-setup Boot Camp. Before I installed MACFuse, I believe it was recognizing my partition as NTFS-3g
At first glance, I would agree with you on the rEFIt and MACFuse prognosis. However, when I resetup Boot Camp, I did not use rEFIt initially and still had the problem. It might be MACFuse, exept MACFuse should only be affecting how the Mac side mounts the Windows partition.
MacDrive doesn't help me here. I don't care about seeing my Mac partition on the Windows side of things.
I have a 60 GB partition, so that makes me almost 99% certain I am not running a FAT32 partition. There may be ways to run a hard drive/partition in FAT32 while exceeding the typical 32 GB standard, but I'm not aware of any.

  • Outline text problems doing weird stuff to letters.

    Motion 2.1.2
what would cause this on random text letters.
it has an outline on it and as soon as I take it off it goes away.
I have tried... repaired permissions, trashed prefs, changed fonts, switched from font Xplorer to font book, cleared font cache, did a little dance and its still not working.
file works fine on our 10.4.11 non intel machine but wont work on either of our 8 core 10.5.5 machines...

tried that and that didnt work either...
we noticed it because the motion files we take into final cut.
we saw the weird box and took it back into motion.
we then tried to recreate our steps without taking it into final cut and still it does the same thing.
I am just not sure what the deal is...

  • My Final Cut runs slow and does weird stuff!, please help!

    Hi there,
I have a Mac Pro 2x2.8ghz with 2gb RAM and Os 10.6.2, Final Cut 7, QT 7.6.3 several FW discs and one 500gb SATA I am using for my FCP project.
Ok here is the problem: every time I start FCP it takes a very long time with the color wheel spinning, maybe 5 minutes or so, then when it finally runs most of the times some keyboard shortcuts are not working: like the space bar (play), which is specialy annoying, or the "a" command. Then if I run a little demanding sequence, like right now for example (several HDV 1080i files, stills, transitions and Live Type movies) it just doesn't run, keeps dropping and skipping all around. It even takes over a minute if I just click the mouse to move to a different location in the sequence.
I know I don't have the biggest available hardware piece of equipment, and I could use a little more ram either, but I am not trying to post produce "Harry Poter 10" here, is just a little video for a client!
Any thoughts?, please help!, I tried everything I can think of... (erase prefs, reinstall FCP, reinstall OSX, etc)
Thanks very much for your time!

Yes, It used to work ok, I think Snow Leopard has something to do, but not sure, anyway it shouldn't, right?

  • Why does my imac start up in safe mode

hi, imac starts up in safe mode. not every time,  only when progress bar appears at startup.
I have had the Logic board replaced under warranty but it still started in safe mode.
sometimes when it has started the wifi symbol is missing and no wifi, other times the sound is not there and the symbol is missing on the top bar.
I then have to restart and it comes up good. sometimes the desktop top bar is not there until I press the mouse and then it appears.
don't know what to do, any Ideas anybody?

How often does this happen? Do you have automatic updating enabled in Software Update? If so, then it's possible those were firmware updates being installed, not startup in safe mode. In a safe mode startup you are initially prompted for your password before proceeding past login.
If a firmware update was happening then the computer will restart on its own. If you interrupt the process then the update isn't installed, so it will try again on the next restart.
Safe mode is initiated by holding down the SHIFT key at restart. It should not occur without user intercession.

When I started up my macbook Pro after a boat trip (just lying in my bag the whole time) it started making weird sounds. Why does it do that and how do I stop it?

The 13" retina MBP has two fans, left and right near the hinge and about 2.5" each from the edges of the case.
My conjecture is that one of the fans may be failing.  An appointment at an Apple store genius bar is the best option.  The evaluation will be FREE and a fan replacement (if that is the problem) should not break the bank account.
You might run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342
This may confirm my suspicion or perhaps find a different problem. Note that an error free result should not be viewed as being definitive.
    Ciao.

  • IMac starts up by itself

my Intel iMac starts up by itself for no apparent reason after it was shut down
using the shut-down command in the Apply drop-down menu. When I come
back some time later I find it is running and I shut it down again - only to find it running again when I return to the room the next time. This does not happen
when I shut it down using the power button on the back.
I have already done a SMC reset and have thrown out some plist preference
lists (as Apple recommended) It has made no difference.
It would be quite simple to always use the power button to shut it down - but
then I find that Elgatos EyeTV will not start the computor when a program is
scheduled for recording. Yes I have checked the Energy Saver to make sure it
is not set for automatic turn-on.
Yes I have also checked EyeTV to make sure that nothing is scheduled for
    recording.
I am just over the 90day free Apple phone support and they now want payment for further help.
    Looking for some good suggestions,
    Walter

iMac (Intel core duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
iMac (Intel core duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Denis and everyone else,
on Saturday I completely de-installed the EyeTV software and pulled all cables out after shutting the iMac down with the Apple pull-down shut-down comand.
It made no difference, the iMac turned itself back on.
On Sunday I followed your suggestion Denis and looked at the Energy Saver.
The "RESTART AUTOMATICALLY AFTER ...." was always unchecked. The
"ALLOW POWER BUTTON TO SLEEP . . . " function was checked and I unchecked it.
From then on the iMac no longer turned itself on (using the shut-down comand) - except when a program was scheduled to be recorded in EyeTV
the computer is still turned on at other times before the scheduled time.
This Monday morning I followed iMac973s suggestion and deleted the Wakein
file also, only to find that EyeTV was no longer able to start the iMac to record
a scheduled program - it missed the start time and I started the computer myself. EyeTV refused to open, it asked for the admin/authorization to install
something - which was the Wakein file . This file is back where it was before
and I believe EyeTV can't operate without it (maybe iMac973 can confirm this)
(Wakein file is an exe file. I always thought that such exe files only exist in Windows Oper/systems.)
    To summarize,
a part solution for me is to have the Energy Saver set as you suggested Denis
and then the iMac won't turn itself on any more. The task of recording TV programs would have to given back to the old video recorder which means that taped programs have to be watched on an old CRT televion set (no fun).
I am more happy today but still confused,
    best regards
    Walter

  • IMac A1311 does not respond to any keyboard or mouse

    Hello,
My iMac A1311 does not respond to any keyboard or mouse.
I can restart it. It starts without a problem, but I can't enter my account password or move the cursor.
I have tried using four different keyboards including the original bluetooth keyboard and mouse, an Apple wired keyboard, a generic wired keyboard and a wireless keyboard. I also tried resetting PRAM as well as NVRAM. I even tried to start it in Target Mode and tried to start it with a start-up disk (The disk remained inside the computer). Unfortunately, it all seems to originate with the same problem. The computer does not recognize the mouse or the keyboard. I believe I could rule out a problem with the USB port since the original keyboard/mouse uses Bluetooth.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance...

Is this a wake from sleep problem, or after only after a restart?
If it is a 'wake from sleep' issue then since some point in OS X 10.6.x, through 10.7 and 10.8, some users (me included) seem to have the occasional problem with the Mac being unresponsive to any commands from the keyboard/mouse/trackpad, and the issue seems to be something to do with Bluetooth not fully waking from sleep.
The 'fix' that works for me 100% of the time is to go to System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.
I keep hoping that an OS software update will come up with a 'proper' fix.

  • I am having problems getting my imac started.

I am having problems getting my imac started. It begins to load, takes along time, then shuts down.
I do not have a disk either to re install the platform.
Any ideas on what I could do or try?
I tried to start it in recovery mode. I pressed the shift key, held it, tapped it.....and I could not get it to register.
The computer carried on trying to load with the loading bar displayed.
Does this suggested, Internal HD failure?

    Thanks for replying Paul.
    I ran check as suggested.
    Seems to be ok.
Still no change with the start up issue.
("Do I have back up to restore from?") Possibably , not sure.
Any other suggestions would be welcome.

  • Imac start-up

i like it when my imac starts up with NO SOUND. it was doing it and now its not. can someone explain this process to me. the volume control is basically for in and out put devices. iam want the computer (imac) to start up with NO sound at all. the controls for volume does nothing for this or somethings wrong. * also i am getting a sweet smell, coming from the vents below?
    Help!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The startup chime volume is set either as a separate parameter set by a utility or if that is not present then it simply takes the main system volume and chimes at that volume.
Did you have a utility like startupsound.prefpane (link) or Psst. I was using startupsound.prefopane but even the Leopard version is been intermittent under Leopard. I wonder if your recent 10.4.11 update has caused a similar issue.
