My imac suddenly shuts down while on line.

My imac suddenly shuts down while on line. It has to be unpluged for a couple of hours before it will restart. Could it be the battery dying? Any other sugestions?

Which iMac..? Go to > How to identify iMac models
1. Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Reset the PRAM and NVRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Then test it for a time and report back.
You also might want to give the Extended Apple Hardware Test a run, as per > Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test to see if it turns up a hardware problem.

  • EMac shuts down while on-line

I'm visiting relatives in Ukraine, and they have an odd problem with their eMac that I've been trying to fix. The eMac will, suddenly, with no warning, shut down while on-line. First, the windows and toolbars all disappear, leaving only the desktop photo. Then, seconds later, that disappears, too, and the computer shuts off.
This seems to happen only while using Gmail or Yahoo mail; earthlink web mail hasn't triggered it. (And I haven't tried any other web mail sites.)
    Any suggestions?
    SO far I have:
    repaired disk permissions
    verified the disk
    run the Apple hardware test
    upgraded to 10.4.10
    installed iLife '08
    installed and tried Firefox
    Thanks.

Good idea, trying the test user! That the test user ran OK helps narrow done the troubleshooting steps, although it still leaves a lot of open questions.
The flashing question mark followed by eventual starting indicates that the startup disk PRAM setting is lost or corrupted. Open System Preferences -> Startup Disk and reset the startup volume to be the hard drive's OS X volume.
The missing hard drive in Disk Utility sounds bad, but if the hard drive were corrupted, it shouldn't be starting up and your test user account shouldn't be running. If you're braver than I am, you can try remotely talking your family through using the Unix file system check utility as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck.
That the test user you created had no problems would seem point to either a conflicting third-party add-on, or a damaged hard drive that's being triggered when Spotlight runs in the background. The latter is unlikely since your test account ran OK. Have your family try Starting Up in Safe Mode. If the Mac is stable in Safe Mode, that leaves the process of determining what third-party add-on is causing the problem (talking someone through that sort of process remotely gives one a whole different perspective on the life of call center tech support staff).
The basic idea is to move items out of the /Library/StartupItems and /Library/PreferencePanes folders and into a holding folder, retarting the computer, and seeing if the Mac is stable or not. After a particular item is identified as a likely culprit, it can either be deleted or, if the particualr function is really needed, the publisher's website checked for updates.
    Good luck!

  • IMacs suddenly shuts down

    Hi,
Since a while my iMac suddenly shuts down and reboots.
It starts with a frame freeze, can't move the mouse cursor. After a few seconds my iMac shuts down.
I have no idea what the problem can be.
This is the report of Console when it shuts down.

    Hey MagicMarcus,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your iMac unexpectedly shutting down or restarting. The following resource provides some great information if this happens, along with potential resolution steps if it is a reoccurring issue:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Support

    Thanks,

  • IMac suddenly shutting down

Below is what my iMac tells me when it suddenly shuts down or freezes. Does this mean anything to anybody. Quite frustrating. I don't want to buy a new machine if there is some fix for this but I also cannot afford to be without my machine while it is in the shop for a look under the hood.
    Any suggestions would most appreciated.

This line in the panic report:

indicates that yours is an Intel imac and much newer than the ones covered in this forum. Any hardware issue you have may not affect the older machines. The labeling of this forum is prety vauge, so it's not your fault. Suggest you repost in the Intel iMAc forums here:

  • IMac G5 Shuts down while running applications

    I installed iLife '06.
Since then my iMac G5 (20") has started shutting down while I'm working.
I'm not sure if the installation is related to the intermittent shut down or if there is another problem.
Someone told me that the fan might be bad. I don't know how to check if the fan is bad. I've heard that some iMac's have noisy fans. I've never heard the fans on my iMac.
I've had my iMac for ten months with no problems.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

There are two common reasons for an iMac G5 to shut-down:
    1) a failing power supply (see the article A. Brody mentioned).
    2) Over-heating.
    I'll tackle the second one.
All the recent Macs have a protection mechanism built-in. If the system gets beyond a given temperature, the computer will turn itself off (without warning) to prevent permanent damage.
So, if you notice that the computer is running warm before it shuts-off, then that could be the cause.
But, it is also very likely to be the power supply.
And, operating with a faulty power supply could lead to tons of other problems or damage.
So, I would personally get it into a shop for inspection and repair very fast.
But, if it is under warranty, you should not have any trouble at all getting it fixed (either standard warranty or AppleCare).
If it's warranty has expired, see if it is within the covered systems listed in the article A. Brody gave you.
If so, request it to be inspected and repaired for free under terms of that extension.
Regardless of which problem it is, get it fixed. Neither problem is one that should be ignored.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac G5 shuts down while importing HDV video in iMovie

So here is the problem, my 20" iMac G5 will be importing video from my Sony HDV camera, and will just shut down. I mean turn off completely. It happened 6 times yesterday to my wife. When I try to turn it back on, sometimes it will work, sometimes, I have to unplug the iMac from the plug and wait 30seconds before it will turn on again. Any one have any experience with this? Is it a power supply issue? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

  • IMac suddenly shuts down

My iMac 27" i7 / 16GB RAM / 256GB SSD is shutting down many times in an hour. All parts are original. I tried to apply all solutions from this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12158210 , no changes, it keeps switching off. Heat is within normal borders, problems happen even if the mac is cold (right after start). I thought it could be a damaged cord, so tried with an other cord - the same effect. What could it be?

I do not have time to read that rather long thread and decide what you have tried to this point. If you will indicate what you have done to try to address the problem, there might be additional suggestions.
From your description, I think you may have a hardware problem.

  • IMac keeps shutting down while in sleep

I have an iMac G-5 without iSight.......not sure if this started happening after the last sucurity update or installing HP printer software, but now when the computer goes into sleep, it waits awhile and then shuts down entirely, forcing me to turn the computer back on. I uninstalled the HP software, and repaired permissions, but this still keeps happening. Any ideas on what caused this and what I can do to fix it?
iMac G-5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   80 gig hardrive which has about 2 gigs left

    Hi,
I am having a similar problem. I have an iMAC (serial in the range W8435xxxxxx - W8522xxxxxx) and in the two weeks, when the computer is put to sleep it turns off. However, I only notice this in the morning after it has been asleep all night. The problem seems to be far more frequent when I put it to sleep as opposed to just letting it time out and go to sleep that way.
I have applied all updates and the only modification to the computer is extra ram (from Other World Computing).
I have seen elsewhere that I can see the computer's reason for shutdown in "system.log". Can anyone tell me how to find that so I can look for the shutdown code there?
    Any ideas?

  • Imac suddenly shut down and will not connect to internet

Hi, my imac running snow leapord was working fine. Then when I came to it a couple hours after using it it was shut down. When I restarted it would not connect safari or google chrome to internet. However, some websites it could access. All the login websites can still be used. My internet connection is good, I have another computer running on same modem and it works fine and internet provider has checked out the connection and it is good.

  • IMac completely shuts down while working in LR4

I have an iMac 27 2.9ghz 12gigs ram with a large file of photos (13000+) My computer shuts  completely down witha sudden "pop" when working in LR4 only. Had iMac checked at genuis desk an they put a new powersupply in....but still does the same thing...Is it the program LR4.2 or my computer?

Sorry, this is clearly a hardware issue...LR 4 does (as Victoria mentions) "stress" the CPU. But f you are hearing a "pop" then something is seriously wrong with your hardware (a "pop" indicates that your power supply is toast) your hardware should NOT be making noises...when it does, you really need to look out!

  • Imac randomly shuts down while idle

I have a new imac 27". Purchased early Sept. about three times in that space I have come to use it finding it shut off. I leave it on sleep all the time.
Could I need a new UPS.? It is about three years old.
The console report shows it is looking for something but I don't think that has any bearing on the problem. Once it is up and running, no problems.
    This is the console message:
"11/6/10 12:49:23 PM ..ButtonManager(164) Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product IDj=8717"

Thanks. I just realized that something else seems to be going on here. I have two printers attached to the computer, an HP 6150 all in one and an Epson R1900. I just noticed that the HP was also off. It is not plugged into the UPS but a different strip. I unplugged it and plugged back in and it came back on. Is it possible that somehow the printer is sending some kind of signal to the computer and shutting it down??? Sounds weird but maybe there is a problem with the printer. Maybe I will unhook the printer from the computer and see if that helps. It is so random and happens so seldom that it will be hard to know.
    Thanks

  • Powerbook suddenly shuts down...

Last night my powerbook suddenly shut down while in use. After I rebooted, there was a message saying the date was set back to an earlier date and keeping that the computer could face unstable condition. So I checked under preferences > date and time but the date seemed correct.
After that I used my cloned external HD to boot into OS and ran DiskWarrior to see if there was any disk errors. While running that I got a Kernal Panic message (the power sign, w/multi-language), so I shut it down and attempted to restart, but then it had problem booting into the desktop.
After restarting, the open-source gray screen came up, asked to type in "mac-boot" to boot or power button to shut down, so I typed in the prompt "mac-boot", and then a little OS folder icon showed up with a question mark flashing.
So I shut down the computer again, took the battery out and did the power-management reset (hold down pwr btn for 7 secs). Then I was able to boot back into desktop.
Has anyone experienced sudden shut-down on your PB? I think this is the second that has happened on this PB.

my 15" powerbook has done the same thing, well at least the first part of your message. The computer shuts down suddenly and then I get the error message about the date and time being set to the wrong date, etc. i thought this had to do with the new battery received from the battery exchange.
Where is this other external battery found. Is it user replaceable?

  • IBook will suddenly shut down and not turn back on

My iBook (apporx. 5 yrs. old) will suddenly shut down while I'm working and not back on. Most of the time after it's been turned off for days it won't turn back on, although it's plugged in and the battery is charged 100%. But on the occations it does power up, everything works properly. Could my battery be completly shot?
    iBook   Mac OS 9.0.x

I too have that problem, but since apple replaced my battery for free, it still does that. I once heard that once your iBook reaches a certain temperature, it will just turn off the screen. usually when it happens to me, I just restart my machine the old way (control-apple-power), but it isn't so good either from what I understand! it is a bad way to work, but until apple fixes the bug, we'll just have to live!
(ps) is there any reason you still run os 9 (cause it is officially discontinued as of 2004)? you should be able to purchase mac OS X (10.2 or 10.3) from ebay or your local mac repair shop (we fix macs in palo alto, ca probably sells it still) I just wanted to inform you of this since you obviously had no idea!
