My imac suddenly went blue

I was working fine with my 24 inch alum imac (receantly bought it) and suddenly the screen went blue and it restarted all my system and apps, losing all unsaved documents. Since i bought my imac (two months ago) it has happened three times its like the computer restart by itself, i already checked the system preferences buy everything seems to be ok no auto restart or scheduled one its selected....
Hope somebody can help me with this......

Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Razland, since this iMac is so new and you are experiencing some type of hard disk failure, I would take it back, you're under the one year warranty.
Your computer should not restart itself EVER. Have you tried using your system restore disk to verify the hard disk for errors? If you have problems with a disk or volume, use Disk Utility to test and repair it.
To repair your startup disk:
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Open Disk Utility
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk. Once you have finished repairing the disk, from the Menu Bar, click Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x in the window and click Restart.

  • My iMac suddenly went from 9 GB free to 100 GB free space. Can't find what is missing?

10.6.8, late 2009 imac, parallels, Win XP, 1TB hd. Can't find anything missing. Have compared with Time Machine backups, have clicked on various files to verify they are still available.  Haven't verified every file, but all spot checks show files still there. A few months ago HD started running almost constantly for 1-5 mins when Finder is open (ran Activity Monitor) and imac slows way down, almost unusable till hd access stops. Now suddenly the free space has gone from 9 GB to 100 GB. I've run with 8-20 GB free space for 2 years. Disk util shows no prob. Where did extra 90GB come from? Where can I find out what might be missing?

Bob, this has taken awhile, but I've done all you suggested.
I did do 2 Apple software updates just before the 9 gb of free space turned to 100 gb. I remember there was a Safari update plus I finally did the iTunes update that had been sitting in the update list for months. Neither required a reboot, which surprised me, but I did a reboot anyway. My entire Music folder on my hd was about 32 gb after the update and looking at the Time Machine backups was about the same before the update. Is it possible there were huge hidden files, caches, etc associated with it that may have gotten deleted with the reboot?
I looked at the sizes on all my Time Machine backups over the past year up through the ones I did immediately after the free space change and one I did 5 days after the change. This is where I was totally SHOCKED. All of them show my Mac HD about the same size as it is now - 899 gb! Even tho Finder showed only 8 to 20 gb free during the past year, Time Machine's backups were 880 to 899 gb in size, basically 100 gb less than what Finder showed. And they're the same size now. So I'm thinking you were right in your original thought that some huge swap, temp, etc files suddenly got deleted???
I checked actual folder and file sizes and contents currently and in the Time Machine backups before and after the 100gb change. Also in backups several months ago. All are similar or reasonable. So I don't think any of my data is missing. Whew!
I wondered if something (not data) in Parallels using Windows XP was deleted. Over the past month there have been many hangs or sudden closing of a few Windows programs. I know these create dumps of data, and looking in Windows I only found a couple dumps, but they were very small in size. Don't know if this could have totalled 100 gb tho. I close Parallels or reboot Win XP frequently, always after probs in it. I close it also before doing TIme Machine backups. I did just do a TIme Machine backup with it still open, but there was no difference in the size of the backup file. Is it possible temp, dump, etc files were held by WinXP over the past 2 yrs, then suddenly deleted? The timing of this with WinXp no longer being supported did pass thru my mind also. I have Norton antivirus in the Windows side of my mac, so no virus warnings, tho I did think of that too.
I also spent time looking (not touching) the tmp, log, etc files you showed me how to get to. Very interesting. I am actually surprised my computer is still working after looking at all the error msgs in the logs.
Thank you for all your help and suggestions, Bob. I'm confident my data is still ok. So now with all this extra space I can update Parallels and then update to Mavericks. Does that sound reasonable to you?

  • My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago.`

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago. What else can I try before just trying to initialize and

Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

  • My iMac screen went pixilated then went black

    Hey!
So earlier tonight my 27" iMac (2009) went pixilated (green, yellow, blue, white small pixels) then the screen went black, but the computer was still running. I shut it down and turned it back on and I didn't have a problem until recently. After clicking play on a video on Facebook, the pixels returned and the screen went black again. I then proceeded to shut the computer down, but when I turned it back on, this is what I saw (refer to picture, sorry it's upsidedown)
The lines eventually disappeared along with the Apple logo, but the screen remained white for at least five minutes. I restarted my mac again, but the lines returned and the screen stayed white. That was around ten minutes ago and the screen is still white. What's wrong here?
Also, I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion about two months or so ago from Snow Leopard (either 10.8 or 10.8.1) if that's important at all.

Exact same thing has just happened to me! I believe I clicked on a facebook video as well; same pinkish strips and same white screen. My life and business is in this computer!

  • IMac 27" i7 "blue screen" problem

    Hello,
My iMac "crashed" a few weeks ago and I experienced something resembling windows "blue screen". The screen went black/grey/blue. Rebooting the iMac did not help and after the normal start up procedure (Apple logo) etc. the mac stopped at a grey coloured screen. I called support and together we tried every possible way of restarting the system without success. It seamed to be a hardware problem like a defective HDD drive or maybe worse. I received a list over Apple service partner and delivered my iMac for a thorough inspection. After approx. one week the service partner called me and asked me "what s wrong with your iMac?" Apparently the iMac started without problems and the diagnostic tests did not find any hardware failures. I was pretty surprised that they didn't find any hardware failure. Happy that the iMac seamed to be ok I went home and plugged in the machine. It started without problems. Connecting the wireless key board I discovered that most of the F functions did not correspond to the symbols on the key board anymore. All functions like brightness, mission control, dashboard etc. had changed places. While trying to reset to the F functions to the normal set of keys while simultaneously updating iTunes and the latest security update in the background the iMac screen went black and grey... It started once after the crash and I checked the list of incompatible updates in the appstore before it crashed again...  Now the machine did not start properly and I got the same grey screen after rebooting the computer. I am relay disappointed.
Anyone out there experiencing the same problem? Anyone who can explain what's wrong?
I will have to call the Apple service partner again tomorrow.
My iMac is approx. 3,5 years old. i7 processor running OSX mountain lion with a 2TB HDD.
    Best regards

Thanks for helping me out rkaufmann87
The iMac works at the moment and I have even installed the new OS X. I called the Apple service partner and they will look into the problem again. Now that they know what to look for I guess they will find the problem and fix it. Hopefully I will only need to change the HDD.
Back to the keyboard. What has happened to the F keys? I need to push the fn key in order to e.g. change the volume on the internal speakers or change brightness! What has happened to the default keyboard setup?
    Best regards

  • IMac suddenly keeps restarting with no warning!?

So last week my 27" iMac suddenly starts rebooting with no warning. Very frustrating. Have zapped PRAM and reset SMU... still happening. Can't track it to anything repeatable when it happens... any program, any time. Happens randomly... some days 3-4 times, some days 1. Have 4 GB of DDR2 SDRAM installed, but running full CS suite daily... perhaps bad RAM. Can it go bad? It's been fine for well over a year since new and it's been my experience that if RAM is bad, it's bad right away.
Should mention that I'm a daily Mac user for 20+ yrs (designer) and feel fairly comfortable diagnosing and solving any issues, but this one has me stumped.

I'm not sure about the original poster's "graphite" iMac, but if your "2nd gen" iMac refers to a "tray-loader" (CD goes in on a tray not a slot), you probably have the same problem I had... Later slot-loader iMacs many have similar problems, but I don't have first hand experience with them.
The most likely cause of the problem is a bad analog video board, specifically the part on it called the "flyback transformer." Do and Google search on "analog video flyback imac" and you should see some useful results.
When my iMac's board went bad, it stated to shut off for no reason. Eventually, it would not even start up. Actually, one other symptom is a "sparking" noise and momentary "jerking" of the screen image. For me, this started happening a few months before the shut off problem started. Unfortunately, replacing the part is somewhat difficult (requires almost full disassembly), and since you would likely be replacing the bad part with a used part from eBay, the replacement is likely to fail too. This is a very common "first failure" for these old iMacs. I think the iMac is designed to shut off or not turn on as a safety feature when the video board is bad. However, if you disconnect the internal video cable (you may have seen it when you upgraded memory), it may start up.
I turned my broken iMac into a "headless" machine by pulling out and reassembling the essential "non-CRT-related" parts on a shelf, connected to and above a very nice 19-inch CRT display (1280x960 at millions of colors). I'm using it now, and it works very well (Mac OS X 10.3.9).

  • My 21.5 iMac suddenly shut off (instantly) and can't restart it.  I fear it's a big problem.

While working on my iMac, it suddenly went off.  No warning at all.  I've tried all the basic stuff and nothing happens.  Holding the power button in and I don't hear the normal sounds.  Thought it might have overheated but after it's cooled down, still nothing.

jsteinmi wrote:  This iMac is only about 8 months old.
It is still under warranty, so a trip to the Apple store is in order. Don't do anything to it! Just take it to the Apple store or the store where you bought it.
I suspect it is a problem with the PSU and it is not user serviceable. Just pack it up and take it back.

  • The calendar on my iPhone 4s suddenly went blank and says NoEvents anywhere. What happened and how do I get the information back?

The calendar on my iPhone 42 suddenly went blank and says No Events. How do I get my data back?

I've been having the same problem every 3-4 months: the calendar app seems to hang up, I either reset the app/phone or wait it out, then presto! all internal calendar entries have been deleted. Unlike others in this thread and elsewhere, I am not using iCloud.
Interesting fact: while following the suggestion to hide all calendars, then show all calendars, I noticed that the internal calendar option is MISSING. It's like it just doesn't identify that there ever WAS an internal calendar. Really? Argh.
Apple Support: are you guys monitoring this? I've seen a few similar postings, so I don't think we're alone...
Granted, I have more than a few entries - years of calendar/appointment history have been imported from my old Palm Treo. Thanks to slow performance and odd calendar app crashes, I am very well aware that the iPhone's calendar isn't nearly up to the task of handling this many entries, and have been working to get the quantity of entries down. I must be up near some threshold, as response time seems to have improved with several deleted entries, though it was just before the crash+data loss.
Fortunately, I try to sync with my Outlook calendar nightly, so I do have a backup. However, this type of data loss and instability re VERY painful for those that actually USE and practically LIVE by their calendars. Here's hoping I can remember today's entry modifications...
One additional complaint: WHY can't I edit a recurring appointment WITHOUT it creating a NEW one? Crazy... For all the things this smartphone does well, it does several things VERY stupidly.

My iMac suddenly no longer connects to wifi network when in KIOSK (username) mode, and only connects when as ADMINISTRATOR mode. Its strange because the iMac has been working fine in KIOSK mode for over a year until 2 days ago.

One of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

  • IMac suddenly can't connect to wireless!

My iMac suddenly refuses to connect to wireless! It worked fine before.
Tried everything including resetting the wireless router.
It always said that my password is invalid... My password is correct!
    Can anybody help me? Thanks!

I'm having the same problem.  I have a time machine that I use for my wireless router.  I connect wirelessly using my Macbook Air.  It has worked fine for months.  Today, about 4 hours ago, my wireless connection stopped working.  When I connect via ethernet directly, it works.  I know it's not my router, because I also tried a spare Airport Express and that doesn't work either.  I'm going to try restoring the time machine to its factory settings and configure it from scratch to see if that works.  I'll post back with the results.

  • My iMac screen is blue?

My iMac screen is blue? What can I do?? Please help!!

You can try repairing it but you will need to do so from either the original Install Disc that came with the computer or the Snow Leopard Retail disc. How you do that is insert the disc in the SuperDrive restart while holding down the Option Key and then select the disc. Choose the language, then click the Utilities Menu - Disk Utility and run Repair Disk. If it finds errors run the utility several time until it comes back error free. Then exit Disk Utility - Exit the Install process and try to restart normally. Obviously if it won't repair the HD has already crashed and needs to be replaced.
If you can get the machine to restart then BACKUP IMMEDIATELY!!!!!! if you didn't already backup. Once it is backed up then you can try to operate the machine. However IMHO your HD has either crashed or is getting ready to and you should be prepared to replace it.
