My iMac was "DOA"

I wanted to share my experience in buying this, my fourth Mac in the last four years (can you say "addicted"?):
I purchased my 17" iMac G5 w/iSight a little over a week ago, and it worked like a champ for the first three days. I LOVED Tiger and its new added capabilities (I think the dashboard is a great idea, personally). Slowly, little problems started to creep up after that third day, though. Primarily, the machine wouldn't sleep properly when told to do so, and then the display began to appear distorted. Finally, the distortion got awful, and the machine shut froze up altogether. I had two sessions with Product Specialists via the online tech support that Apple provides. We did two reinstalls of the OS from the disc, then a THIRD reinstall from scratch (completely erasing my previously stored files). Still, the problem was not solved. I took the machine a nearby Genius Bar, where the Genius there told me, after some time, that my machine had been sold to me "DOA". That's right...Dead On Arrival. I dragged my corpse of an iMac back to the store I'd purchased it from, and to their credit, they replaced it right away. My "perfectly healthy" iMac is a great machine. I'll let you know in another couple of days if that changes. If I were more crass, I'd make a joke about Sudden iMac Death Syndrome, but I'm just not that crass. I learned a couple of things through all this that I'd like to share, though...
1. Keep your packaging and original receipt for 14 days. 14 days is the window for unconditional returns/exchanges, and having the packaging and receipt will smooth the process.
2. There really isn't a 2. I'd promised more than one thing, though, and this makes it look as though I've delivered on my promise. Enjoy.

Welcome to Apple Discussion
Living on the Big Island of Hawaii, I can appreciate the frustration of not having an Apple Store nearby. Sorry to hear your iMac was DOA. I have derived great satisfaction from my machine - purchased this past November. Glad you have enlisted the help of service people who from your description seem thorough.
What follow-up have you done with the Apple Store? The Core-duo is still in the Rev. A. class, which usually sees a higher incidence of problems than subsequent models. Since the machine was DOA, you had the option of returning it to Apple at their expense, as the 14 day return period from date of purchase seemed to still be in effect.
Have you purchased additional RAM with the machine? "More the better" I say.
When I visited the Apple Store in the Chicago area early in March, I had a chance to try out the new iMac Intel. I was quite impressed by its speed when running native (Universal) apps. In another year, the Intel line is going to be quite the rave in computer circles.

  • My iMac was stolen...I have the serial #..can i do anything?

My iMac was stolen a while ago, along w/ the iPod touch that was attached to it charging.  Basically someone broke into my apartment while I was out on a Friday night.  No, I didn't have renters insurance (amatuer hour, I know).
So I recently discovered the serial numbers online for these 2 items while I was looking through the Apple support website for another item I own.  I added them to independant 3rd party stolen property databases online, but there are a lot and I feel its not too centralized.
It seems to be common sense that if one must register the serial number, then its possible that these serial numbers popped up when a new person tried to use the computer/ipod...say, like when they try to use iTunes under their new ID or if they for some reason were dumb enough to re-register these serial numbers to themselves.  Is there any way to find this info out?  All I'd want to know is if someone registered these products.  If I knew that, then I could at least let the police know and have them get the info from Apple (because I doubt they'd give it to any joe-shmo) and let them do their thing.

All you can do is provide the serial number to the police and hope that they get lucky and can recover your property. Apple has no system for tracking stolen property, and will not give you any information about whether or not someone else has re-registered the serial number. This is for privacy reasons; they have no way of verifying that an item was indeed stolen (and not just reported as stolen as a prank or by a disgruntled seller) unless Apple is contacted by an authorized law enforcement agency.
Sorry about the loss. Good luck getting it recovered.
    Regards.

  • The church's iMac was registered by an employee who is no longer here. We need to update the OS to Lion and much of the software. Without his password, do we need to wipe and reinstall the OS? If so, how do I do that?

The church's iMac was registered by an employee that is no longer at the church. We would like to update the OS to Lion as well as some of the software. Since we do not know the password, is there a way to reset it it? Or do we need to wipe and reinstall the OS, register and then update? If so, how hard is it to reboot?

OK, thanks for that. Look on the original OS X install disc and see if that say Leopard 10.5.x or Snow Leopard 10.6.x. You advised in the last post the system is running 10.6.4, which is Snow Leopard. The most up-to-date version of Snow Leopard is 10.6.8, once we get your password changed we can work on getting it up-to-date.
So to change the administrators password  you will do the following:
Insert the Snow Leopard Install Disc into the SuperDrive and restart the computer , when you hear the Startup Tone hold down the Option key.
    Choose the SL Install Disc
    Choose the language
Select the Utilities Menu - Select Password Reset
Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
Select the user name of your original administrator account. (you can change this later!)
Enter the new Password (remember to re-enter in the second box)
Quit the app by hitting the Command - Q keys
Quit the Installer (Command - Q again)
    Restart

  • My iMac was stolen in a robbery - no files via iCloud (long story).  I have a new iMac which is set up and being used - how do I recover old iMac files from what looks like back-up files showing on my Time Capsule (also being used for this new iMac)?

My iMac was stolen - but I think there's a backup on my Time Capsule (which wasn't stolen). I have a new iMac which I've been using normally; I didn't use the 'Restore from...' option at the start because I thought the Time Capsule had nothing on it.  So how do I now recover files from the Time Machine?  I can see various back-ups on the Time Capsule, from various machines - laptops, etc. - but it's not letting me open any of them to see what they contain. Does anyone know how I access this information?

    Use migration assistant.
    See http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
Although this is only up to Mountain Lion it is still relevant to Mavericks.. only expect Mavericks to kick and buck a lot more.

My iMac was stolen. How do I get all my purchased music?

Depending upon what country that you are in (and whether the music is still available in the store) then you might be able to re-download them : re-downloading.

  • HT2452 My iMac was stolen the receipt doesn't have the serial number but I did register the computer when I purchased it how do I get the serial number

My iMac was stolen the receipt doesn't have the serial number but I did register the computer so Aplle must have a record of it. How do I get it.

Go to the Apple website and your support profile. It should list that iMac and the serial number for it. You'll need your Apple ID and password for that Apple ID.

  • My iMac was stolen, how do I recover mail and music from Time Machine on to a new computer?

My iMac was stolen last week and I need access to emails that were only on that machine. It was 21.5", 2010 model (I think), running Maverick. I had Time Machine enabled to an external hard drive. Now I need to go in and locate some emails from those files but am not sure how to find them. Does Time Machine automatically back up everything? Will my iTunes library also be there? I lost a ton of music that I need for my job.  I don't see a folder named Library or Utilities (I know, old school) and am at a bit of a loss. I did try to "Enter Time Machine" but didn't see a lot of files and don't know how to surf through the various backups.
Am now operating on a 2012 MacBook Air (refurbished by Apple) on Maverick.
    Thanks.

How did you transfer the data?

  • 3 kernel messages in a week - all 3 when the iMac was idle

In the last week I had 3 kernel messages:
All after the iMac was idle for a long time. In the first two times it was "sleeping", and in the third time just the display was asleep (I canceled the computer sleep to test it...)
In all three times, the screen was asleep and the iMac didn't respond to the keyboard/mouse. I had to manually shut it down and then restart it. When it came back up, there was a "your computer had a problem" kernel message, with a report to Apple option.
During the week, I was working with the iMac every day for about 10 hours straight, without any problem... in all 3 cases, the problem occured when the iMac was idle for a long time.
I suspect that its related to a waking up of "something", although I put "never" under "computer sleep" and the "put the had disks to sleep when possible" box is unchecked...
I tested the RAM with both Rember and the AHT and all was ok. AHT didn't find any problem.

Any ideas of what might be causing this? Do you thing it's hardware related although it only happens when the iMac is idle and didn't happen during work time (again, 10 hours straight, daily)?
    Thank you!

    Thank you both.

  • 27" iMac was stolen, now returned but has been locked what do I do?

My 27' iMac was stolen, now returned but has been locked what do I do? It was purchased in December of 2011, they nust have set up icloud account to lock it. How do I get around this? Apple should have my serial number of this computer matching my account somewhere right?

What do you mean by 'locked'. Is it the admin password that you don't know or did they set a firmware password?

  • IPhoto does not start to update after my iMac was updated to OS X Yosemite.

iPhoto has been "paused" after my iMac was updated to OS X Yosemite. iPhoto does not start to update when I click "UPDATE" in App Store "Updates". The circle on the left top corner just keep circling. Do you know how to fix this problem? I cannot download my photos to iPhoto without updating it.

    Thank you LarryHN,
I could not follow what you have explained to me as I struggled to find iPhoto 9.6. Anyway, while I was struggling, I managed to update iPhoto somehow. Finally, I can use iPhoto!
Thank you very much for your quick response.

  • Every image on my iMac was imported into iPhoto!

Every image on my iMac was imported into iPhoto, even icons, templates, DVD covers and game images. There are even videos in my iPhotos library. He (who shall remain nameless!) was really only trying to help and clicked the wrong thing - obviously. What a mess! How do I get them back where they belong? (I'm still using iPhoto '09.)

Thanks, John. I read in another post that when you delete an image from iPhoto, it deletes the original from the computer too, not just the library. So, I was understandably nervous.
Understandably, yes. He who shall not be named may have chosen "Import to Library..." and selected a folder or even your entire hard disk's contents. Doing so would result in every readable image file being imported.
If that's what he did, I just did too and verified original files remained untouched after importing then subsequently deleting them from iPhoto. So, I have no explanation for whatever the other post indicated.

  • Imac was stolen, can i get my iphotos to my ios7

My Imac was stolen, and i want to know how to get my photos from my Iphoto Imac App?.. If yes how?..

If your iPhoto library was on your stolen mac, you have to get hold of the thief or the Mac to access it. There is little hope to access the photos on the device. We need to know, what data are left under your control.
Was the iPhoto library on an external drive? Do you have a backup of your stolen mac? And access to a different computer to be able to read those disks?
Did you share any of your photos online? Photo stream, Shared Photo stream, Facebook, Flickr, Dropbox?

Yes. Other things have synced including books, but I don't know how these happened. According to the 'audible' instructions it should happen automatically, but it doesn't.

  • Just downloaded Yosemite to my iMac (was using latest version of Maverick) and all I get is white screen.

I just attempted to download and install Yosemite OS to my iMac (was using Maverick v. 10.9.5)
After the install and restart, the computer freezes at a white screen and will proceed no further with finalizing the installation.

Appears that you have a hosed installation. Boot into recovery mode and reinstall the OS. Once back up and running, check to see which OS was installed. If Mavericks, then try another Yosemite installation. Hopefully, you saved a copy of that installer outside of /Applications; otherwise, you'll have to waste time, electricity, and bandwidth downloading the ill-designed installer app which blows itself away as part of its installation process.
