My iMac will not play certain DVDs after upgrading to OS X Mavericks

I bought my iMac about 2 years ago, it worked fine, no problems until a few months ago, i upgraded to OS X Mavericks because it came up on app store updates and it was free so i upgraded. Ever since then it is very picky about which DVDs it plays, some it accepts straight away with no hassle, others it tries to read for a while until eventually ejecting. I have looked in other discussions but there isn't a solution that i've read that works. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I have just had the same problem with my iMac and after upgrading to Mavericks my iMac would not wake without pressing the power off button and re-booting.
Anyway, I have since done a complete new install on my iMac and have gone 5 days without an issue with the iMac not waking.  It was a bit of a pain to do but my own view so far is that the problem is linked to the upgrading of the OS instead of a clean install.
My iMac now flies with a new OS installed instead of an upgrade.

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

  • DVD Movies will not play in SuperDrive after upgrading to Lion?

I just discovered that I cannot play any DVD movies using the Super Drive.  It spins up and down a couple of time and then ejects the DVD.  I tried several DVD's I have.

Well, that about does it. I inserted a music CD into my MBP, finished listening to it and now the CD is stuck in my machine. I can hear and feel it try to eject but something is stopping it so it ***** it back in. I cant figure out how to get it out. I have had nothing but trouble wit this machine. I am beginning to think I made a very expensive mistake buying this thing. I'm from Louisiana, perhaps this Mac has a better capacity to soak up oil in the Gulf than to actually WORK as a computer.
All this has happened in about 6 hours. Buyers remorse has fully set in.

  • DVD drive will not recognize blank DVDs after upgrade to Lion.

It finds burned DVD/CDs but not blank ones. Disk utility partially sees blank dvd, gives option to eject it, but will not allow eject it. Finder does not see it at all. have to restart to have it eject. Tried different DVD's (Manufactures and -R / +R, etc). Have followed recommendations on resets and have even reloaded the OS.  This problem started immediately after upgrade from snow lepoard to lion.

Repairing permissions yes. But in my head, if everything is working fine for it, just won't read Blank media, could it be a software thing?
I'll give it a shot in a few hours

  • Itunes on W8 will not play any files after upgrade to 11.0.4.4

After following the prompt and updating Itunes on Windows 8 to version 11.0.4.4 on 6 June, Itunes no longer plays any audio or video files from my library. Pick a file and Itunes shows that it is playing (Pause button only) however nothing happens. The file simply does not play.  Windows Media Player will not open any files. VLC will play flash video files but with no sound.  Video played in IE10 seems to play ok including sound.   Anyone have any suggestions.  I can uninstall but figure I'll get teh same version when I re-install.   Everything worked fine prior to installing this upgrade.

Resolved by running W8 System Restore to a point prior to the last Itunes update. Now back on the previous version of Itunes. Windows Media Player working correctly with all file types. Itunes working correctly also.  I'm quite happy not to re-apply any updates from Apple for a while.

  • I live in the UK but visit the US regularly. The price of a new MacBook Pro is much less in the US, and is where I plan to buy one. However, I have read that a US machine will not play UK DVD's. Is this true and if so is it possible to change the codes?

I live in the UK but visit the US regularly. I plan to buy a MacBookPro in the US but have read that it will not play UK DVD's. Is this so? If so, is it possible to change the codes?

All modern & new Macs can play both PAL and NTSC DVDs.  I do it all the time and it works perfectly.
The DVD drive is set to its first region code when you first play a DVD in it.  So when you buy a Mac, whatever type of DVD you play first will determine the initial region code that is set.   If it's a PAL/Region 2 DVD it will set the DVD drive to region 2.
The only thing you have to watch out for is if you have a collection of DVDs that have different region codes.  In those cases you may be faced with changing the region code in the DVD drive in order to play one or more of the DVDs; and as others have noted there is a limit to the number of times you can change the region code (most modern DVD drives allow up to 5 changes; the 5th change becomes the permanent change).  This is due to industry licensing practices.
If you have DVDs that are Region 0 or All Regions you don't have to worry about region codes.

  • DVD-R discs will not play on DVD Player

The DVD-R discs I made will not play on DVD Player Version 4.0.
I transferred VHS to DVD-R using an RCA VHS/DVD Recorder. The discs played well in 3 different DVD players but will not play on my i-book.
    Please help?
    New At This
    i-book G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

In a nutshell the problem is the fact that the Software used by the RCA recorder is for PC.
When recording DVD's the software that is available varys greatly.
Some of the top of the line software gives options to burn PC only, MAC only, and PC or MAC combined.
It was also brought to your attention to use VLC Player on your Mac the firmware that is used with this player will sometimes allow for playing DVD's that were burned on these VHS to DVD Burners.
Here are a few tips that affect reading and writing DVD. This link is only a small amount of what can and does affect, I suggest you do a Google search to learn all you can.

  • Imac will not turn back on after being unplugged. Is there something I can do?

imac will not turn back on after being unplugged. Is there something I can do?

    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

If your on 10.6.8 like you should be for security/stability updates, somewhere along the line a later Bootcamp version was issued and only supports Win 7.

  • A duplicate DVD made on my iMac will not play on it although the original DVD will play on it and on my TV.  Answers?

I made a duplicate of a DVD on my iMac but it will not play on it.  The original DVD plays on my iMac.  The duplicate will play on my DVD player with my TV.  The original DVD is not a copyrighted commercial DVD.

That doesn't create a DVD. It makes a copy of the files on the DVD. All you did was put data files on the disk. A disk must be formatted correctly for a DVD player to recognize it as a DVD.
Use Disk Utility to make an image of the DVD, then burn the image to Disk.
    File menu, New>Disk Image from <DVD name>
Set the image format to DVD/CD Master.
Once the image is finished, select it in the Disk Utility Sidebar and click the Burn button.

  • IMac will not play DVD Movies

I have a first generation iMac G5 (OS 10.4.11) with a "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825" drive which plays CD and software DVDs fine, but it will not play DVD Moives, burned or commercial. When inserted, they spin for a minute then I get an error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." But it should be.
I have tried updating firmware, but the update said I did not need it. Also tried deleting the "com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist" as suggested in an earlier post. Nothing has worked.
I had this problem years ago and have updated the system since but DVDs still will not play. Does anyone know how to fix this or download a new DVD driver?

I do have the exact same problem, but even worse: my superdrive won't even read a software DVD. I would like to upgrade to Leopard (I bought the upgrade DVD) and I can't read it. Is there a way either to make the superdrive work again by myself or use another computer's drive for this purpose (upgrade to Leopard)?
    Thank you for your support.

  • Disc burned with iDVD will not play in DVD player only on MAC

I used iMovie to create a movie and then shared it with iDVD. I successfully burned the DVD through iDVD but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays fine on the iMac. It is in UDF format. After reading through posts, I saved the file as a disk image and then burned through Disk Utility. This plays fine but I would really rather burn the disc directly from iDVD. Any ideas why the DVD player says "This type of disc cannot be played"?

Media quality affects the burn errors on a disc. Computer players tend to have better error correction (to preserve digital data) - set-top DVD players tend to have poorer error correction since the are designed to play commercial, stamped DVDs with low error rates.
