My iMac will not sleep when not in use.

The screen will go dark, but the disk will not sleep when not being used.  I have restored defaults and set energy settings to do so and still no luck.  Any thoughts?  Was this part of a current update?  It just started to not sleep a few weeks ago.

Thanks for your help regarding my computers sleep disorder.  I wanted you to know that after many hours of searching, I found that I had downloaded a program called Growl with my Belkin router when I installed it.  I removed this Growl program and finally my computer will sleep on it's own.  I wanted to give you this info just in case you come across this problem again.
Thanks again!

  • Macbook Pro 13" will not sleep when I shut the lid

    Hello Community,
This is my first time using the forum. I have a macbook pro 13" 2009 model. Recently I had my MBP connected to an external monitor. I shut the lid while it was connected to the monitor and forgot to turn off my bluetooth mouse. Later that night the mouse was bumped, waking my macbook and setting it to clamshell mode. I put it to sleep again, opened the lid and woke it, but the LCD on the laptop did not turn on. I reset the PRAM and the NVRAM with no luck. I disconnected the monitor, rested the P/NVRAM and it would boot with the laptop screen and once everything was loaded my screen went black and then went to sleep on its own. I tried powering on and off using the P/NVRAM key commands...and nothing. So I opened the bottom case and physically disconnect the battery, reconnected the battery, put the bottom plate back on and powered it up. The screen began working again, now I have a new problem, the MBP WILL NOT sleep when I shut the lid anymore. I even reinstalled the OS and still no luck? If anyone has anything helpful that I could try to get this feature working again it would be much appreciated. If there is some terminal command I could try or some other troubleshooting method. I even put a magnet by the right side of the keyboard to try to trigger the sleep switch.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I resolved my issue in a very unlikely way. In my earlier post I mentioned that I wiped my hard drive and was starting from scratch. Well I reinstalled windows 7 through bootcamp and it fixed my sleep issue. That's right folks...Windows fixed my mac. I think that it was an EFI issue. I think this because windows 7 uses EFI and during installation it must have reset the sleep values to normal. I feel when you reinstall Mac OSX the EFI partition on the drive should get wiped and reinstalled as well. I also feel that apple should have an option within System Prefs for the user to select what the way is that the computer responds when the lid is shut instead of the ritual of trickery and problems that the clamshell mode can cause.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • MacBook Pro will not sleep when charging and display is closed.

    Hi,
My Mac will not sleep when it is charging. When I close my display, it will not sleep.
When I unplug the power cable, it sleeps...
I've tried to reset the SMC, and I think i did, the charger went from green to red etc different colours..
Does anybody know what this might be?
    thanks

    AIGHT GUYS!
This is how to fix it, and i guarantee u its 90% the cause.!
first of all, if you are a lion user (most likely all of you with this problem) go to system preferences, and then to sharing. turn all sharing OFF. especially printers....
open a terminal, and type in :
    pmset -g assertions
This will show u if somehting is preventing ur mac from sleeping. on the left colomn, it should say "PreventSystemSleep" and on the right colomn a number. mine was one, which is probably the same for you guys.
Go to system preferences > Print & Scan > Open Print Queue. Make sure all the printing queues are empty and nothing is in there. You do not need to pause any or anything like that just make sure nothing is in the queue.
Close your macbook lid and look at ur light it should be sleeping. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR U
took me long enough to find out.
dont hesitate to ask me any questions

  • IBook will not sleep when lid closed

    Hi,
I recently had my Hard Drive replaced, the old one died. It was all covered by AppleCare and the repairs done at a Apple Authorised Outlet. After installing everything again I just found out that my iBook will not sleep when the lid is closed. The screen is still on and bright. Any ideas why? Is this dangerous? Any quick fixes?
    Cheers,
    Jack

    Jack,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You need to give the Apple Authorized Repair center a call back and let them know what's going on. I've seen this before here on the forums, and it was attributed to a sleep magnet not being put back in. It's most likely this. Apparently, putting this magnet back in can be easily overlooked.

  • My iPad will not sleep when the cover is closed.  Thus, the battery runs down quickly.

  • X120e does not sleep when lid closed

I found another similar post, however it was resolved by the individual reinstalling the operating system.
My issue is more complicated. I have made sure everything is up to date, all the settings that tell the system to sleep when the lid is closed are turned on. I have even turned those settings off off, just so I could turn them back on to make sure there wasn't something quirky about it.
I have tried restoring the system to factory settings using the recovery partition, as well as discs burned from the program that came with the computer. I have tried clean install from Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 discs.
The unit still does not sleep. I don't ever remembering it being able to. I once closed the display thinking it would sleep (power was plugged in). Woke up the next day, went to work for 8 hours, came back and felt that the system was really hot. Opened the lid and the screen was exactly as I had left it the day before.
When I first got the system in 2012, the screen did not work, so I actually had to send it to Atlanta, GA for repairs. It came back quickly, and it still did not work, so I actually sent it back to Atlanta, GA's repair center a second time in the same week. It came back working and I left it alone. I never tested the sleep/wake because I always just turned the system off when I was done with it, but now I am back in school and this little computer comes in handy, but I don't want to turn off the system manually going from class to class when I need to pack it away in my bag.
Could there be a hardware issue? Something inside not connected? This laptop works perfectly EXCEPT for the fact that it will not sleep when the lid is closed. It is out of warranty but had I known this was an issue while it was still under warranty, I would have inquired. This unit is in pretty fantastic shape, looks brand new too. No damage, never been dropped, and only ever handled by me (never loaned out).
    How can I fix this?

    Thanks for the reply, gat0gelat0.
Yes, those settings were the first things I checked. I also tried changing it to "Do nothing", then changing back to the sleeping option. It still does nothing when I close the lid.
I would like the functionality of it going to sleep when I close the lid for the convenience, like when class ends, I have to rush to my next class, I just want to close the lid, put it in my bag and run to the next class. Keyboard shortcuts like Fn-F4 work, but this laptop should have the functionality I am describing, and I want to figure out why it isn't working and how to fix it.
I suspect there is an issue with whatever is used hardware wise to sleep the machine. Either it's not being triggered, or it's not there, or it's broken. I've tried running a magnet around the bezel of the LCD screen as well as around the palm rest bezel and there is no activity as I've read that many laptops trigger sleep by interaction by a magnet. Still nothing.

  • Configure drives to sleep when not in use

I’ve been running my NMH300 with two Seagate 1.5TB drives for about a week and it seems the drives keep spinning 24/7.   Is there a way to configure the hub to put the drives to sleep when not reading/writing?  The drives are very hot all the time and I’m afraid they will burn out prematurely.

Heat is my problem too. I don't like the mediahub is treating my HD.
In my PCs all HDs are in front of fan/fans while in the MH there is a thermostat.
That's why i will not set it up as Raid 1, putting your eggs in one basket.
My data is more important than the MH.
    My solution.
    1. I tape 3.5"x3.5" PC fan at the back right on top of the interior fan
    using double sided foam.
    2. Seal the gap between the fan and MH with tape.
    3. Cut the fan cord and connect a 12v DC adaptor.
That's it. My HDs are running cool now.
The interior fan does not turn when the exterior fan is on
which is alright, it's a certain back up just in case the exterior fails
then the interior will kick in "when it reaches a certain temperature"
I got 2-1TB WD Black Caviar which generates a lot of heat.
It's all about the data. By the way Linksys does make HD that is why
they don't know how to protect one.

  • MB pro not sleeping when lid closed

Hi, I came to work today, opened my backpack and found my laptop extremely hot in its sleeve. It appears it had not gone to sleep when I closed the lid. It then failed to run properly for about 20 minutes until it cooled down. Now it is ok, except that it will not run in lid-closed mode. I plug in my external display, put it to sleep, and wake it back up with the lid closed in order to use the external display. The display fires up for a few seconds and then turns off again. I've tried this over and over again, the computer simply won't stay on for more than a few seconds. However, when the lid is opened, it will run the external display in mirrored mode just fine. I think something is toast. Coincidentally, I had just downloaded the keyboard update 1.0 a day earlier... Anybody know why my computer is not sleeping when I close the lid and why it won't work in closed-lid mode anymore?

I've had a similar problem since I first got this a year ago. Sometimes when I shut the lid, the display does not go to sleep, and sometimes it restarts automatically when I shut the lid! I've also found it very hot at times when it should have been sleeping. So far, it's only been a minor annoyance.

  • Does not sleep when I close the lid...

Never encountered this before! I have 1 MacBook that works fine, but bought another today that will not sleep when I close the lid. It does sleep when I select it from the menu, but not when I shut it.
    Any ideas?

Mine recently started doing the same thing. Now everytime I want to go out with my computer I have to pack up the charger, even if I only end up using it for 15 minutes, because the battery is wasted by 2.5 hours.

  • How can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

how can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

If the machine is asleep, lid closed, and you plug in to an external monitor and an external USB keyboard, the machine will wake, anbd reconfigure the screen resolution for the external monitor, Once it has made this configuration change, you can open the lid and it will continue to address only the external monitor.  At least that's how my early MacBook Pro unibody 13" works. It seems to run a bit cooler this way. It gets quite toasty with the lid closed while doing anything demanding and you are more likely to hear the fan come on.  I have not seen any temps that would cause alarm, but I do get a high speed (6000 rpm), noisy fan sometimes with the lid closed, .
If you operate in the open-lid, external monitor only mode, if you deactivate the monitor for any reason, when it reactivates it will be running both screens, with all the navigation hassles this entails, so I generally set it not to deactivate the screen when in this mode.
Thus I agree with those who say that some of the cooling air is drawn in around the keyboard, the difference in cooling performance is observable.  If you activate istat pro, get the computer hot running in clamshell mode, and open the lid, you can watch the CPU temp drop by a few degrees C within a couple minutes.  It isn't a huge difference, but enough the lower the fan speeds.

  • IMac will play DVDs but not CDs

My 2009 iMac will play DVDs but not CDs (bought music CDs and burnt CDs). The last time I tried (successfully) was December 2013. Can anyone help?

Start a new topic and don't hijack this one.  You're problem is different from the OPs. When you start the new topic give your system version, iMac year and model and what type of CDs you can't read, i.e. commercial or those you created yourself.  Also if you can read DVDs.

  • Macbook pro not turning on after SMC reset. I have the following problem. Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011does not sleep when closing the screen. smc due loud fan and an X on battery symbol

Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011 dos not sleep when closing the screen cover. Today I Turner my laptop in. However the fan was working loudly and stayed loud. After Start I noticed an X on Battery symbol. Clicking on it, it showed 'no battery.' I found out that a potential solution for this problem was SMC reset. I also noticed that the leds on magsafe was not lightning. Despite this I tried to execute the smc reset as described on apple support site. Switching off, plugin the magsafe connector, pushed the buttons shift + alt+ ctrl + power. Then i pushed the power button, but my mbp is not turning on. I pushed several times on the power button but nothing works. The magsafe is also dark meaning the leds not lightning. Can anyone here help me on this ?

Problem solved by my own. But do not how :) magsafe again working and the laptop tooo

  • My macbook pro will not charge when I am using it.

My macbook pro will not charge when I am using it. My battery will say "charged" then "not charging" and it goes back and fourth. It says "Power Source: Power Adapter". But when I use my pro it will loose the power source then reconnect a second later to it. This problem is getting annoying because I have to stop using my macbook pro to charge it.

    Reset SMC.

If this does not help, contact Apple.

  • MBB Does Not Sleep When Lid Shut

My macbook does not sleep when I shut the lid. This happened recently after I had my fan repaired. I also updated the OS at the same time, so I'm not sure which triggered the problem.
I would have to manually select sleep before shutting the lid; and I would have to press the space bar after I've opened the lid to wake it.
The following thread applies to a MBP. Apparently my problem might be a faulty latch.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5325605&tstart=0
I've reseted my PRAM, but that didn't work. My machine has been in for repairs 4 times (Fan, Logic Board, and the top case has been replaced twice due to cracks).
I'm wondering if I should send it back to the service centre to have it looked at. Apparently, if this is not a hardware problem, it won't be covered under AppleCare, and I would be charge. So just want to make sure...

I tried doing this fix using the guide on http://ifixit.com to dismantle my MacBook and find the battery/lid detector cable which indeed seemed loose at its connector just next to the headphone jack, but when I reassembled the mac still does not detect lid closing and now it doesn't even detect the battery anymore! Yikes! Looks like a trip to the apple store is required anyway.
