My iMac will "ONLY" run in "safe boot" mode

Hardly anything works .. No sound .. wont recognize ANY USB pluggin .. iPad .. cd's or DVD's
Has several sets of Green vertical lines ( 8 lines in each set ) on screen backround

What happens when you try to boot normally?
What model Mac do you have. The model type can be found in the System Information.
It sounds like it might be a graphic card issue.  If you're running Lion or later Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both disk and disk permissions.  Then try to reboot normally.

  • After power cut, iMac will only start in safe mode.

When starting up the grey progress bar gets about one third of the way across and eventually switches to a blank grey screen  The cursor is visible.  It never progresses to the normal desk top.
It does start up in safe mode and shows the normal Yosemite desktop.
iMac is mid 2007 running Yosemite.  2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 667 MHz DDR@ SDRAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB graphics.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Imac will only work in safe mode

This follows on from a previos posting where I had to reformat the hard drive because of file conflicts. Since then the pc worked fine for a while then suddenly froze and will only boot now in safe mode again. If we leave it on overnight it sometimes will boot normally the next day and work like this for a couple of days and then goes back to safe mode again. Its really annoying since we cannot print anything when in this mode. Is this normal for Imacs to constantly keep suffering from file conflicts like this? and how do I stop it?
Thanks in advance for any reply
    Anne

Apparently Preferential Treatment is not seeing and/or finding something that is corrupting your system.
This is a long shot & very time consuming but you may wish to try the following (some of which you may have already tried).
Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices/peripherals from your computer.
Step 1: Restart into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key during startup. The comp will run a complete & lengthy file systtem check, then start up w/only the required kerenel extensions & w/o running any Startup items tthat you installed.
If you are running OS 10.4 it will also perform some font finagling.
Try starting up normally again. If you are still stalling, restart in Safe Mode & move on to Step 2...........
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Step 2: Open Library>Startup items folder-the root level Library, not the one in your user name folder.
Look for potentially problematic 3rd party items such as virus scanning software components, etc. Remove 1 or more items to a location outside the Library folder, such as the Desktop, then restart normally & see if your Mac stalls. It it does, try removing all the items in the Startup items folder & restart. If all’s now well, place the items back into the Startup items folder 1 by 1, restarting each time you put one back. If and/or when the stall resurfaces, you just identified the faulty component.
If the above does not work, then it’s time to move on to Step 3.................
Step 3: WARNING-This step can be tedious-removing .plist files from the /Library/Preferences folder.
Remove the entire Preferences folder from the Library folder on your startup drive then place the files back 1 by 1 until you see the problem return. *The Mac will automatically create a new Preferences folder in the Library folder*
Alternatively, you can take half of the items out (all non-Apple .plist file, for example), restart to see if your Mac stalls, then move to a smaller set of items, repeatingn the process until the culprit is found.
Hang in there & good luck!!!!

  • IMac G5 only starts in Safe Boot

iMac G5 ALS, 1 gig ram, OS 10.4.9, fresh formatted drive. Bluetooth v1.6, Airport ex v3.6
Startup gives Apple logo with spinning progress wheel, then solid dark blue screen, then light blue screen with black mouse cursor, then nothing else happens. The only way I can get the imac to startup is to hold down the Shift key on startup to go into Safe Boot, then everything except networking and DVD works, which is what I needed most. I have tried starting up from an external firewire drive with 10.4.7 and I get the same thing. It must be an extension that is accessing bad hardware, but which one? Or maybe my Airport extreme card that is bad, I need help.
    Thanks in advance.

Now I am pleasantly confused, I closed it all up and restarted and I was back where I started with a blue screen and a mouse cursor. Then I thought I would give it one last shot and connect up the firewire drive with a system on it, and when I started with the Option key down to select the firewire drive, it came up as normal on that system. I was able to play a DVD movie, run games, and burn a CD from the external firewire system. I used safari wireless to get out on the internet, wow. So I used the system preferences to set the startup disk as the internal hard disk, and restarted, it came up on the internal system with the USB keyboard and mouse. Then I shut it down, turned on the wireless keyboard and mouse, then restarted. I stuck at the blue screen as before. So I turned it off, turned off the wireless keyboard and mouse, connected the USB keyboard and mouse, and the firewire drive, and it stuck again at the blue screen. I think it is time for a long drink, and let both me and the mac cool off. I will let you know what happens when I turn it back on.

  • Installed itunes 10.5.2 on my laptop and now it only runs in safe mode HELLLLP!!!

I installed itunes 10.5.2 on my laptop and when it rebooted after it said that it could not connect to my ipod because of something to do with "apple mobile device" I tried unsuccessfully to find an answer and whilst trying to find an anwer my laptop froze and crashed and everything said it was not responding that was when it actually opened anything.
I've found the solution to get it to connect to the mobile devices however my laptop will only run in safe mode and i cant fix the problem in safe mode!!
My question is if I uninstall and reinstall itunes will i lose all my playlists? or does anyone have a solution to fix my itunes????????

I'm so frustrated!! None of the solutions work, I've uninstalled itunes, won't let me uninstall bonjour because "i dont have permission" and my laptop will only run in safe mode.

If they don't have a Mac version and you must have it, you'll have to install Windows in Boot Camp or similar app.

  • White Macbook 13" will not boot - Stuck in Safe Boot mode

    In a nutshell --
macbook will not boot.  Originally it was stuck on the gray screen with spinning wheel.  Here is the course of action taken thus far (in order)
    1.  Reset SMC -- removed battery, pushed power button for 5-1 seconds.  Rrestsarted.  Nothing.  Still with the gray screen etc.
    2.  Tried to restart in Safe Boot mode.  --  Macbook will restart and after 25% on the status bar it hangs up.  After a 5 minutes or so it shuts down (I assume form overheating as the fan is running wild.)
    3.  Wheneve I start it now it tires to go in safe mode so I tired to zap the PRAM (opt/command/p/r)  No luck.  Tried twice.  Once after three chimes.  Once after 2 chimes.  Still tries to boot in safe mode.
    4.  Tried Recovery Mode (I am running Mountain Lion).  Can boot into recovery mode.  Ran disk repair and it said all was fine.  Would not allow me to repair permissions but I could verify them.  I ran verify.  No messages came up at all -- thought this was strange.  I also tried to re-install the OS but the first time the only disk available to me was the recovery partition.  The second time I went into Recovery mode I saw the regular Hard Drive partition but it was grayed out and locked.  Considered restarting to an external USB drive but then did not know what I would do then.  Might try this tomorrow.
    5.  Ran Target disk mode with my iMac.  The disk did not mount in the desktop but showed up in disk utility with the HD partition grayed out.  Could verify and repair disk but nothing was allowed regarding permissions -- all options grayed out.
    6.  Restarted with Verbose mode.  Ran for 5 - 10 minutes and shut down.  Last line I saw was "checking extended attributes file"  No error message.  Again, maybe it was an overheating issue as the fans were going wild and it was about the same length of tome running as in safe mode when the macbook shut down.
OK.  The hard drive is a few moths old.  There was nothing strange going on with the hard drive prior to shut down.  The only odd thing happening was the dvd drive was begining to make sounds upon restart (from sleep or full restart).  Like it was checking/reading a disk in the drive.  This was especially odd as the drive has been dead/unusable for a few years.  (When you a dvd or cd in it could not read).  This dvd drive sound happens even now upon each start up.
I do not want a new motherboard.......or laptop.
    Thanks.
    Robert

Thanks for the prompt response.  Thanks for the adivice.  I wish i could get it to go into safe mode.  It stops after 5 minutes of trying.  I am not sure if it is the hard drive as it will boot into Reocvery Mode --  meaning it will let me access the 650 MB parititon Lion has set aside - so that part of the disk is working.
I am headed to the Geniusues soon.

  • IMac will only restart or shutdown from power button.

My iMac will only restart or shutdown from the power button, it also will not logoff users. It starts ok, but only after a hard reboot?? I have repaired permisions and no change. I have a clone I can restore from but any ideas whats up here?
The only things that I know I have altered are deleting files saved during migration from Panther (months ago)and running Unbuntu Live CD.
    iMac G4 15 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 728ram

Are you booting into Ubuntu Linux? Most of us here wouldn't now anything to do with it. If the problem is occurring when booted into Mac OS X, it may be a sign of data corruption in the power management and user settings. Some corruption is easy to repair such as fixing the directory (which I'd only do after a clone). Here's how according to my FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
And I assume the issue is with your iMac G4.

  • My iMac is starting with a safe boot

Why is my iMac starting up with a safe boot?

This might stop it booting in Safe Mode. Open Terminal in Utilities and copy/paste only
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
Hit return and enter your admin pword when requested. You won't see anything entered as you type it in. Then hit return again.
(Note: I've never had this happen, so don't know if this is effective or not. Found it in another thread here for this problem. If it doesn't help, it should at least be harmless. Maybe Linc can say; he's far more Unix literate than I. OK, found where it came from:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3965882?start=0&tstart=0)
So looks like either a PRAM Reset or the Terminal command will work.

  • IMac randomly booting into "safe boot" mode after a clean installation of OS X Lion 10.7 (??)

Is anyone else having problems with their Mac (running a clean installation of OS X Lion 10.7) randomly booting into "safe boot" mode after a restart or shut down?
(Indicators being: seeing the login screen even when "automatic login" is enabled, the proper video drivers not loading - indicated by laggy desktop animations, WiFi not working properly, Menu Bar icons that normally show - not showing, etc.)
**Note: I migrated from a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup, but did not import "Settings". I thought this would be the best way to keep from encountering any issues with 10.6/10.7 incompatibility.

Found this answer from another user. THE EXACT THING HAPPENS TO ME:
Its really annoying Apple hasn't fix it.
    =================
    I think i got it :
The progressbar while booting ( booting in safe-mode ) came from the wireless keybord and is reproduceable.
At evening I shut down my iMac an put off my mouse and keyboard. To startup I put on the iMac and immediatly after I switch on keyboard and mouse. In tihs case the keyboards sends some event wich leads to safe-mode.
Know I wait until I switch on the keyboard. In my opinion this is a bug, i can live this way but i hope it will be fixed.
I will know take a look at it while not switching off the keybord, power consumption should be acceptable

I keep getting a Fatal Exception Error on start up, and I can only run in safe mode on my dv6, can anyone please help?  I don't really want to reset it back to factory defaults as I will have to re-install everything.  I have tried going back via system restore, but it keeps telling me that there are no restore points?  I am running Windows7 64 bit OS

    Hi,
Start the notebook in Safe Mode and let Windows fully load.  Hold down the Windows key and press R.  In to the Run box type msconfig and hit enter.  In the following window, click the Start up tab, remove the tick next to each start up item and then click Apply to make the change.  Restart the notebook and see if it now boots normally.  If it does, re-enable one start up item at a time, click Apply and reboot to check if it still runs ok.  Keep doing this until you encounter the problem and you will know the last program you set to start is causing the issue.

Use the Toshiba recovery disk or the Toshiba HDD recovery option.
If you dont have the Toshiba Recovery disk try the HDD recovery:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
This works only if the recovery image files from Toshiba are still on the HDD:
If you installed the system using another disk as Toshiba recovery disk, this recovery option will not work.
