My imac won't automatically go to sleep

can anyone help me with this? i have my mac set to automatically sleep after 20 minutes and the display to sleep after 5. But the iMac never sleeps unless I do it myself. I have Chrome and iTunes running. Would that matter?

Has this ever happened before? Did you check the box to put hard disks to sleep when possible? Obviously if the computer is playing music or videos it won't go to sleep, I assume it is at idle just with the applications open? Maybe check Activity Monitor in the utilities folder and see if there is something going on you're not aware of.

iMac won't automatically connect to Wi-Fi.  I can connect manually using "Network Diagnostics".  After I select my router the connection is made.  How can I make it automatic again?  I only have a medium/low expertise.  Software is Mac OS X v10.7.5.
The problem all started when I let Nintendo do a computer share in order to connect to a Wii U.  The tech was into so many things I couldn't keep track of them.  I have tried everything I know to fix it but to no avail.  I even let Nintendo try twice to correct this...no luck.

Hello, how do you fetit to connect?

    Hi 02SilverSport,
Try using the power button to wake the iMac.

  • G5 Won't automatically go to sleep after installing Leopard

I have my power savings prefs set to about 5 mins to put my G5 to sleep.
I checked to see if this was working on Tiger immediately before upgrading to Leopard.
Now that I've upgraded to leopard my G5 won't automatically go to sleep. I can force it to sleep from the menu bar.
I have tried switching time machine off, and that doesn't have any effect.
Has anyone got any ideas that would help me to get my power saving sleep setting to work again?
The reason that I need it on my G5 is that where I have it positioned does no have wonderful ventilation and it tends to get a bit hot if I leave it on all day.
Hence the power save/sleep is a feature that I really use a lot!
    Thanks for any help,
    Steve

Another thing to check is whether you have DVD Player open. This will prevent your Mac from going to sleep.
If this is not the case, the next step would be to reset your NVRAM. You can find instructions on how to do this by reading this article:

My new iphone 5s won't automatically go into sleep mode

Try doing a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears, ignore the red slider if that appears.
There is not a control for sleep timing so see if the reboot helps.

  • My iMac won't automatically connect to wifi after waking from sleep mode

After dowloading the newest software update and performing a firmware update for my Airport router, my Imac won't connect to Wifi automatically after waking from sleep mode

Please re-download and install the 10.7.3 update. You can locate it at 10.7.3 (Client Combo). Follow the on-screen instructions. Then test it out, if you still have the same problem please restart, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option Key and then choose the Recovery Partition. Then open Disk Utilities and Repair Disk Permissions 2x. Then exit DU, restart normally and re-test.

  • My imac won't wake up from sleep

My iMac is about 6 months old and if it goes to sleep it won't wake up.
The screen is dark, I press on the space bar, click the mouse but nothing happens. (at least on the old iMacs there was a light to see whether it was on or not).
Then I have to hold the start button in for 15 seconds, let go, and then hold it in briefly and it restarts.
I'm running Lion. I have the screen saver set to 5 minutes and the energy saver 1) computer sleep and 2) display sleep both for 10 minutes

I'm having this same issue. Try this advice

  • My iMac won't wake up after sleep or screen saver.

For the last couple of days my late 2011 iMac (21 inch) has had this issue. If I press the power button, a dark screen will appear with the white cursor (*** apple?) and after a few seconds go back to sleep mode. The fans are running and the only way to turn it back on again is to force it by pressing the power button for 10 seconds or unplugging it.
I have tried reseting the SMC and PRAM, tried to repair the disk, deleted the Cashes and Cookies folders as shown on this post. I have updated the software from Mac OS X (10.7.2) to Mac OS X (10.7.5), showing no satisfying results.
My computer has never had an issue as serious as this one, as I can no longer just leave it there in standby without having to worry about an unsaved file or anything of the sort. What can I do?! Please help!

  • My iMac won't wake up from sleep, and often refuses to boot

    Hey guys,
I recently became the proud owner of a 27" iMac.  However, when I first received it, it refused to start.  I had to plug it in, unplug it, plug it back in, hold the power button, unplug it, etc. for about 10 minutes before it finally started up the first time.  Since then, it has four times now gone into sleep mode and not come out, refusing to reboot until I perform the above dance.  I tested the power cable and power strip; both work fine.  Has anyone else encountered this behavior?

I have two iMacs that are doing this though I only need to unplug the power cable for 30 seconds, plug it back in and then press the power button for a couple seconds. One iMac is late 2009 and the other late 2013 purchased in 2014. I can't pin down the precise date that it started but it was sometime in the last 4-5 weeks.
The solution is to set computer sleep to never.

  • IMac won't wake up from sleep

When my iMac goes to sleep, pressing any key on the keyboard, or moving the mouse will not wake it up. I've tried resetting the SMC (System Management Controller), as suggested in one the Tech Support articles but to no avail. I have to shut it down by holding the Power Button, the turn it back on again, every time it goes to sleep. Any suggestions?
    iMac 20'' Intel '06   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Ok, while you check the software check the firmware version you have, this doc will help
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303880
If the firmware is updated, perform a permissions verify this doc will explain how http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=152369
Then if you notice no change you can reset the Pram by holding down the command option P and R keys while doing a re start the mac will fire up and you will hear a chime ,keep the keys pressed down until you have heard 3 chimes then release, the mac will then boot up ( be aware that this will reset your preferences to the default ones)
Let me know how you get on
    kindest,becca

  • IMac won't come out of sleep mode

I have a mid 2010 27' iMac.  I recently installed OS-X Mavericks.  The update installed without issue and the computer, generally, works well.  The computer will, not however, wake from sleep mode.
When the computer wakes, I enter a password at the login screen and the system hangs indefinitely.
    Rebooting is required.
The computer can awake from being idle and the screen switching off with no issue, but after a few hours of idle time, it just wont let anyone log in.
This has only occurred since Mavericks was installed.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be appreciated.

I think that this was being caused by my Time Capsule drive.  Time Machine had failed mid backup at tome point and new backups were failing.  I erased the Time Capsule using the Airport utility as Time Machine could only see a small proportion of the capacity of the drive.  Backups now run and the iMac wakes up immediately.

  • Imac won't wake from deep sleep

This just started a week ago- in the morning after my Imac has been asleep for a few hours, I will try to wake it by pressing the keyboard or mouse and nothing happens- powerswitch is unresponsive, I eventually have to unplug and replug to start it up. During the day it will sleep and awake normally, it just seems to happen after long periods of time. The only thing I can think of is recently there i installed an Itunes update, could this screw things up? I have a (pre intel) IMAC running OSX 10.3.9 -1.6ghz and 512MBSo far I did the following:
    1. ran hardware diagnostic test from CD (passed)
    2. Zapped pram (command-option, p and r during start-up)
    3. File system check (fsck -yf)
    4. Trashed powermanagement.plist preferences
    5. Deleted system cache and repaired disk permissions
    6. Reset open firmware ( reset-nvram, reset-all)
This morning I tried to wake up the imac and the same response, nothing. Sleep light pulsating, but when I touch the keys, there is no response, the imac seems to do into a deep sleep. I had to unplug and replug again. Is there anything else I can try?
This all seemed to start when I installed the latest security update and newest Itunes, could this be a connection? If so, is there anyway to uninstall these?
    Imac G5 (pre-intel)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.6ghz/ 512MB

Henry, there are reports of problems occurring with updates, I don't think you can un-install the Security update, and as far as reverting to an earlier version of iTunes, well, you could try and extract an earlier version from your receipts folder, but I would hesitate to mess with iTunes, you might lose your entire library.
What I would recommend is an Archive and install, or perhaps an upgrade to Tiger.
Let me know what you do,
    Miriam

  • My MacBook laptop won't automatically go to sleep when I close the lid.

I recently got my mid-2009 edition MacBook repaired for a broken screen. Previous to the screen problem, everything worked fine. But ever since I got it back it will not automatically sleep when I close the lid. I don't want to accidentally waste the battery when I'm in a hurry and close my laptop without manually put it to sleep. Is there any way to fix this problem?

The first thing I would try is an SMC reset...

  • Pwer Mac G5 won't automatically go to sleep

I have had my Power mac G5 for over a year now. I am running OSx Tiger. 2 days ago I returned from a long vacation, switched on my mac and it prompted me to do an OSX security patch upgrade which I went ahead and did.
In the past I have had the power preferences setting set to put the Mac and monitor to sleep after 10 mins of inactivity. It has always worked perfectly!
Now after my return from vacation the automatic sleep doesn't kick in!
If I manually put it to sleep from the system drop down, then it goes to sleep.
Has anyone got any advice to get the automatic sleep feature working again?
    Many thanks for any help,
    Steve.
