My iMac won't mount or even read my NTFS external hard drive

I have a new model iMac running 10.9.4
I have a 4TB usb 3.0 external Seagate hard drive formatted in NTFS.
I cannot get the iMac to recognize it.
I've tried:
- mounting via disk utility: "the disk could not be mounted. try running first aid on the disk and then retry mounting" I haven't tried first aid because I don't want to erase or change anything on the hard drive. It also said I could try verifying the disc but haven't done that for same reasons. It works perfectly fine on my 2009 iMac.
- Finder preferences - external discs is checked
- I installed an app called NTFS-3G which was recommended along with MacFUSE 2.0 but that didn't seem to do anything
The only place I can see my hard drive is in disk utility, but it is grayed out.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You must remove the "NTFS-3g" software.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Imac will fire up perfectly until i attach an external hard drive

imac will fire up perfectly until i attach an external hard drive including an ipod then it freezes at plain white screen.  I have attempted to hook and unhook different externals (I have four) I have also attempted with ipod (80 gig classic).  I have cleared PRAM (while unhooked from externals)

I have to go to work so I can't really test every drive to be sure but yesterday it would not fire up with any of the externals.  It appears that this may have solved the issue.  I'm mystified at how that could get changed (boot set up preference) I did as you said and it seems to work.  Thank you very much!

  • My iMac cannot read my Verbatim external hard drive since I updated to Yosemite today - what can I do?

I updated to Yosemite today and now have no access to my Verbatin external hard drive. My anti virus software - Kaspersky for Mac has also stopped working. I have identical problems on my Macbook Pro.
Does anyone know of fixes for either problem please?

  • Imac won't start, not sure if it is the hard drive

My computer wont start now. It was taking ages to start up and now it wont at all. It was suggested on this forum that the hard drive was knackered. I pressed squiggle button + R, and then copied the disk to an external hard drive. I then re-started in the same way, and chose the USB external hard drive as the starty up disk. The computer still wont start. I am thinking that if it wont start this way then probably the internal disk is ok.
I was going to try an reinstall the operating system, but I dont appear to have any disks.
Does anyone know what the next logical step  might be?
I can't really take it to a shop to be fixed due to access / logistics.

Your test is not conclusive because if the system was damaged, copying it to another drive would not fix it. It would still be damaged and unbootable.
You can reinstall the OS by booting from the Recovery Drive the Mavericks installer created on your hard driver as part of the initial installation. Boot your computer while holding down Command+R to boot directly into the Recovery drive. You will need a broadband internet connection to download the Mavericks installer.
However, before you reinstall the OS while you booted into the Recovery Drive launch Disk Utility and run Disk Repair to be sure the volume structure of your hard drive is sound. If it is damaged and Disk Utility is unable to effect repairs, you will have to erase the HD. In that case I would not place any reliance on the hard drive or any data on the drive regardless of the S.M.A.R.T. values.

  • Final cut pro X not reading events in external hard drive

I know this has been talked about in one way or another but I still am just not understanding. Any help I can recieve will be much appriciated.  Just purchased Final cut pro x and I have an external hard drive that I have some events on. FCPX will recognize the external hard drive but says there are no events in the external hard drive.  I checked 2 other external hard drives as well and all three FCPX will not read the events that are in the hard drive.
    Thanks
    Brian

Brian, I notice that I have to have whatever drives connected before openeing FCPX; so sometimes when you plug in a USB3 drive or a Thunderbolt drive on the fly, even if though it mounts, it won't be recognized until you re-launch FCPX.
Beyond that, it's important to make certain that you name the two folders in the attached drive exactly: Final Cut Events, and Final Cut Projects, and they should be on the root directory of the connected drive(s).  On all of my systems, if you have multiple drives connected with identical projects, FCPX actually picks one and warns you that there are two different identical projects and tells you which one it opened.
If you take the time to provide Tom with what he's asked, he is extremely helpful and will likely identify the issue.

  • How do I read/open an external hard drive after using time machine?

I have an external Seagate HD that I used to back up files using Time Machine.  How do I now read/open/view the Seagate External Hard Drive to see all that was saved for example documents, photos etc?

    probe_droid wrote:
TimeMachine does an exact copy of the hardrive that you backed-up.
Not exactly, but close. It doesn't duplicate files and folders that haven't changed. It creates hard links to the originals so that it looks as if they are in the current dated folders, but they really aren't. I think this even throws off the Finder, sometimes. That's why digging through the Time Machine backup via the Finder is not a good idea and will likely cause more consternation.
Pondini has a nice FAQ and troublshooting site devoted to Time Machine. It is well worth everyone's time to take a look at what he has compiled. On the troubleshooting page are links to some tools that will allow you to peek into the backup and see what has or hasn't been backed up.

  • NTFS External Hard Drive now read only

    Hello Everyone,
For months I have been connecting a NTFS 1 TB Phantom Labs external hard drive to my mac book, to access my music collection, as well as store additional large files. Today, however, I found my external hard drive to be "read only," rather than read and write. Interestingly, the folder where I keep my music, also includes the lock image as the external hard drive icon.
When I look in Disk Utility, the Phantom Drive is originally listed as read/write. However, the mounting point, named disk2s1 is listed as read only.
Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this situation and return to the read/write status I originally enjoyed?
    Thanks.

I have got the exact same problem!!
have a 320 seagate ext HD formatted as NTFS that I have been using for the last 3-4 months that suddenly became read only.
I'm running macfuse with 3G to read and write to the drive and prior to this have never had an issue.
Have another ext HD formatted as NTFS that reads and writes fine. I have tried disk utility but verify and first aid are greyed out for the seagate drive, One minute I was writing to my drive fine and next time I plugged it in Read only (yes I ejected properly as always)
Any ideas?? I hope it's not a re format and start again..

  • My new iMac will not allow me to daisy chain my external hard drives - what can I do?!

I just purchased the new late 2013 iMac 27" and all is wonderful except it will NOT allow me to daisy chain my external hard drives which is a HUGE problem because I'm a professional photographer & I won't be able to access my images unless I can sort this out.  I know I can purchase a new giant hard drive but i'd prefer not to because I have about 12 TB of data which will be expensive & time consuming to transfer & I'd also prefer not to have that much info tied into one device.  Ultimately I will need to get a Drive with multiple bays but I'd really like a short term solution that works for the drives I currently have.  Any help is GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks!!

Why can't you daisy chain your drives. If it's because the iMac only has a Thunderbolt port and you have Firewire drivers purchase the Thunderport to Firewire adaptor from Apple: Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)

I'm running Windows thanks to BootCamp perfectly, but I have a problem. I can open and read files that I have on an external hard drive (HFS+) but I can't create or modify files in it. It's like I don't have permissions. Please, how can I solve this?

I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive, now my iTunes will not sync with my iphone. It has an error when syncing photos and quits
iPhoto works just fine, iTunes works just fine. This only occurs when syncing. Please help!

Put your iPhoto library on the external hard drive and hold your Option key down when opening iPhoto. Then just select the library on the external drive. You can have multiple libraries too.

  • How to edit (read/write) an external hard drive that is attached to a router

    Hi everyone.
I have Macbook Air (2013) with OSX 10.9 Maverics, and Netgear WNDR4500 router with WD external hard drive attached to it. My problem is that I don’t have writing permissions. When I’m trying to change something in the hard drive, it says “The operation can’t be completed, because you don’t have necessary permission”. Under Get info / Sharing & Permissions, it just says “You have custom access”, and there is no option to change privileges to “Read & Write”.
I would appreciate if anyone could help me with this.
    Thanks!

I don't use TM, but as far as I know, the only way it will work wirelessly is with a Time Capsule. Check the info here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/2.html
which is from one of the subheadings here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I would guess that you'd be able to write to the drive once you have it attached via a cable (FW, USB, etc) to your Mac (not your router).

  • Why won't my mac book pro recognize my external hard drive?

I'm having a battery issue with my computer, and need to bring it to the nearby Apple Store to have the battery looked at and possibly changed. I wanted to back up  my computer in preparation for my visit, but for whatever reason, my Mac Book Pro is not recognizing my trusty LaCie external hard drive, a device I have used with this computer for two years now and performed countless backups with. I am not sure why this is happening. I have already tried restarting the computer multiple times, and unplugging and replugging the hard drive, both to no avail. Are there any ways I can get my computer to recognize my hard drive in order to perform the backup? Thanks.

    Hi all -
I cannot view my flash drive OR my office server, which I should be able to connect to via VPN. VPN was installed on my Macbook Pro at my office on Friday. It worked fine. Now I bring it home, and I connect using VPN, and it shows that I am connected, yet the server hard drive icon does not appear on my desktop (as it usually did) and I can't see how to access the server at work.
I also cannot view flash drives when I plug them in - they just don't show up.
I had Norton installed; I read online I should disable that. I did this, and no luck. I also have already done all the things suggested on this post and have all the boxes checked, and yet, still cannot use a flash drive or access my work server.
I am stuck? Do I have to bring my Macbook pro in for service? I have NOT upgraded to Mavericks.
    Thanks for any help.
I am not that well versed in finding my way around a Mac - so keep any explanations simple, please.

Apple has a handy search function on their web page, so you can go to the upper right searchbox on most pages and type in what you need.  Just typing in "format hard drive" gave me this result.
